5 best places to see 4th of July fireworks

Listen, I know we're all worried about gas prices and tomatoes and the economy, but let's not forget the true meaning of July 4th: fireworks! Well, I'm sure there's something else meaningful there, but that's not my gig.

Since I often have family visit for the holiday, I've made it a point to take them to a spectacular show -- something they can't see at home. So here are my top 5 picks for the best places to see awesome fireworks. Most of these places should be within reach on a tank of gas or less.

1. Federal Hill, Baltimore. The rocket's red glare over the Inner Harbor just makes your heart swell standing on this historic mound overlooking the city. The first time, I got all teary-eyed, but then I noticed there were a lot of other crying drunks hanging around, some eyeing up my blanket. in fact, I realized, there were way too many people. The crowd was huge. So get there early to stake your spot.

2. National Mall, Washington.  I sometimes catch the quirky PBS concert beforehand, which offers a delightful view from the steps of the U.S. Capitol. Otherwise, anywhere along the mall works as long as you're not camped out behind one of the folklife festival tents.

3. Deep Creek Lake, Garrett County. A star-spangled display above mountains of majesty. The event is called "Fire on the Mountain," with fireworks launched from the top of Wisp Resort. Best place to view the show is from a boat near McHenry Cove.

4. Independence Hall, Philadelphia. There's something magical about being in the place where it all began. But I must say, I liked it better before there were so many sponsors. Now there's the Southwest Airlines July 4th Parade and the Sunoco Sweet Sounds of Liberty Concert & Fireworks. I'm sorry but there's nothing sweet about oil companies, lately. The feeling is more crude, actually. Did I mention the cake made of 10,000 Tastykakes? Ah, sweet liberty.

5. Ocean City. The water is what makes this one of the best. Take your pick: Fireworks over the ocean or fireworks over the bay. Either way, it's a special summertime treat. Fun starts earlier in the day with games and food at the Jamboree in the Park (bayside). Later, downtown on the ocean heats up with a concert from the U.S. Navy Band.

OREGON RIDGE is awesome! Fireworks AND the BSO! Hard to beat.

Everyone knows the best actual display of fireworks is in Catonsville. While the other places you mention have exciting other attractions, for the best actual show of fireworks, it's got to be Catonsville.

My desk mate, a Catonsville resident, agrees with you. - MDZ

Any local list that does not include Catonsville High, is flawed... :)

Oh, oh. The Catonsville crowd is in da house. Sorry, folks, but I was thinking less "staycation" and more "daycation." But maybe we need a list of top local places for fireworks. I'll think on that. - MDZ

anybody know how big the crowd is at the inner harbor for the fireworks? where can u park? how about the pier 5 garage, or is it too crowded? can u see the fireworks from camden yards?

hi Michelle, somehow first time I have seen your column before, great job! :)

Thanks, Shannon! It's a pretty new gig so I'm still working it out. Hope you visit again. - MDZ

Oregon Ridge had the best fireworks I've ever seen last night!

When I was in the Navy in San Diego, a local station played music and all of the displays around town were synchronized. They had a reporter at each site and had everyone cheer to each other over the radio. It was pretty amazing celebrating the same show across an entire metro area.

I agree by far the best fireworks are CATONSVILLE FIREWORKS!!

Awsome display, can`t believe they weren`t mentioned!

The fireworks in Catonsville make the Inner Harbor's look like child's play.
