Irritating beach habits

Last Friday, I asked for your help. I wanted to know what are the most annoying and irritating things people do on the beach.

Here are the ones that came up, with a few of my own added in:

Dave started it off: People who lose their kids. Obnoxious meatheads who take up an entire section of beach for an unnecessarily loud game of bocce ball. People who crash their kites into unsuspecting beach-goers. Boom boxes playing techno music.

That's a little harsh on the losing kids part, Dave. Stuff happens and kids wander off, but parents should be more vigilant. The only thing worse about bocce ball than obnoxious meatheads is when the obnoxious meatheads can't hit near the target and the balls go flying into umbrellas and blankets. Techno music.... enough said.

Holly added: Loud swearing

Agreed. There's no reason to show off and act like a big man or woman by throwing around four-lettered words. Grow up.

Moll had a good one: People setting up camp on the beach right next to you (see Assateague Island) when there is plenty of open space.

This one happens all the time to me. In May and September, when the beach is often deserted, a nice quiet day can be ruined when some obnoxious meatheads show up with their techno music and play bocce ball right next to me. Ocean City is a big place. Move a few yards away, please.

ja agreed with Moll, and added this: Oh and when kids throw sand. If you're a parent, be a parent.

Throwing sand is absolutely unacceptable. It's even worse on windy days when kids throw sand and it blows into the next group of unsuspecting beachgoers.

PPA added: Smokers!!! The wind always blows it my way.

Like I wrote in my post on Friday, I hate it when people who smoke leave their cigarrette and cigar butts in the sand. Smoking is your choice, but the rest of us would prefer not to smell it and get your trash stuck to our feet and bags. The trashcans really aren't that far away.

Sara B had two: 1- People who look like they are going to live on the beach. 2- Parents who let their kids run through the "blanket area" dragging their crap (a boogie board or what have you) and spraying sand and water everywhere.

The all-out tents are hilarious, especially on windy days. The best part is when the group tries to put it up or take it down and can't figure out how all the parts go together or come apart. And of course, non-parenting parents are the worst!

Greg Pacienza added two more: Music on the beach. I want to hear the ocean! Drunks.

It's funny how the two go together. The drunks with their hidden alcohol always seem to have the loudest music.

JTK saved the best for last: Wearing bathing suits. I mean, I'm no prize in a suit, but at least I can keep it all in the suit.

Too many people simply don't belong in their outfits. With all the ordinances enacted by the Ocean City Council, I don't know how they haven't banned speedos. People who could plug a hole in the Ravens' offensive line shouldn't wear child-sized suits. It's disturbing. There are horror movies that cause less psychological damage than watching some of these people stroll along the beach. Like JTK said: keep it all in the suit.

Most of these come down to two things: disrespect and lack of discipline. When you come to the beach, realize that you aren't the only one there. Respect your neighbors and they'll respect you. Pick up your trash, don't be loud and obnoxious, and keep an eye on your kids.

Nice summary, Peter. And I agree with the hilarity of beach tents and watching the people fumble around trying to set them up. What's also funny about that is the poor kids, maybe 5 or 6 years old, struggle to haul the rest of the family's beach accessories across the dunes and down to the beach. If you have to load up your kids to carry all of your stuff, then you might want to consider paring down. Anyway, I will be heading down the beach this weekend. Maybe I will have something to add to this discussion next week!

My pet peeve are folks who feed the pesty seagulls. Too bad the poop doesn't make it back to the source.

I agree with Troy. I hate when people feed the seagulls. They are flying rats and they are dirty and I somehow always end up being the one covered in poop. Please, people, do not feed them.

Parents who carry small infants into the ocean, make me so nervous that I have to leave the beach.

My biggest pet peeve at the beach is when people shake sand off a towel or blanket that has been laying on the sand without regard for where that sand is going.

Just at the beach today and some immature young teen, thinking he's pretty funny was throwing sandballs at the seagulls!...at one point putting food down for them to lure them and make targets of them!!!!
He was not thrilled with me when I spoke to a life guard about he and his group leaving their garbage laying about and throwing sand at the gulls!
Sure gulls can be a nuisance ...but it's the "jerk" specimans of humans whom make them such by such immature and irresponsible behaviours treatment of these creatures!
