Impact Wrestling: Lots of TV time for the Knockouts
If seeing the TNA Knockouts on your TV screen is your idea of a good time, then you probably enjoyed Thursday night’s episode of Impact Wrestling.
The Knockouts were all over the show. Tara and Miss Tessmacher won the Knockouts tag team title from Sarita and Rosita, and the four women (plus Madison Rayne) also engaged in a backstage brawl. In addition, Mickie James, Angelina Love and Winter all got some time on the microphone, and a scheduled Knockouts title match between champion James and Velvet Sky never got underway thanks to a wild brawl involving James, Sky, Love, Winter, ODB, Jackie and the returning Traci Brooks.
While there were no Awesome Kong versus Gail Kim classic matches on the show, it was a nice change of pace to see the women get so much screen time. I have always liked the fact that TNA comes up with angles and programs for the women on its roster, unlike WWE, which would rather just throw 14 Divas out there with no story line and have a seven-on-seven match that lasts less than a minute.
The women’s tag team title match was a bit disjointed, but it wasn’t bad. As for the seven-woman brawl, it was fun at first, but it went on a bit too long. I was definitely glad to see that ODB’s back (I was also glad to see ODB’s front).
I thought for sure that Brooks – who appeared out of nowhere to join in on the melee – was going to turn on the babyfaces and align herself with ODB and Jackie, but we didn’t get the usual Vince Russo swerve this time (so the swerve was that there was no swerve).
Other thoughts on Thursday’s show:
The four-way ladder match – which was part of the Bound for Glory Series and was worth 10 points to the winner – that saw Matt Morgan defeat A.J. Styles, Gunner and Samoa Joe was good while it lasted. It’s too bad they were only given five minutes. ...
The Rob Van Dam-Scott Steiner match (which RVD won) was an interesting clash of styles and turned out to be pretty entertaining. These two guys have been around forever, but I don’t recall them being in the ring together all that often. ...
The main event, which saw Sting and Kurt Angle defeat Mr. Anderson and Bully Ray was just too short (it went about four minutes). By the way, Anderson – who just joined Immortal – already isn’t getting along with Ray. Russo shows make my head hurt. ...
Did I really hear Anderson refer to Angle as Sting’s “butt buddy?” I’m sure GLAAD would be upset it if had any idea that TNA existed. ...
James Storm cut such a tremendous promo when he and Bobby Roode confronted Mexican America that it almost makes me want to see a match between the two teams. ...
Love and, to a lesser extent, Winter also did a nice job on the mic. ...
The story line explanation for Sarita wearing a protective mask is that she suffered a broken jaw and cracked orbital bone during a parking lot brawl last week that pitted her and Rosita against Tara and Miss Tessmacher. In reality, Sarita is suffering from facial paralysis. ...
The TNA X Division title match between champion Brian Kendrick and Alex Shelley was good. I was a little disappointed with the screwjob finish (Austin Aries attacked Shelley behind the backs of Kendrick and the referee, which allowed Kendrick to score the victory), but it did establish Aries as a key figure in the X Division. ...
Mickie James looked a bit heelish walking around backstage wearing her shades. ...
Who would have ever guessed that Kelly Kelly (WWE Divas champ) and Miss Tessmacher (co-holder of the TNA Knockouts tag title) would both be wearing gold at the same time? ...
Eric Young segments equal fast-forward.

Comments
I bet that barely anyone gets your Kelly/Brooke reference.
Just thought I'd point out, on Vince Russo's Twitter page, he says "Don't ask me how I still have a job" But he removed it recently :(
That Velvet Sky/Mickie James segment was AWFUL until Angelina and Winter came out.
And it's Bully Ray, not "Bull Ray."
RESPONSE FROM KE: Extreme Expose! BTW, thanks for the head's up on the typo.

ODB kevin? Seriously?!
RESPONSE FROM KE: She's like a car wreck. I try to look away, but I can't.

This was a great show. Lots of wrestling, and the matches were all real good. I thought Steiner/RVD was outstanding. Steiner can still deliver a top match, but on a limited basis. Storm was great on the mic. I do see BM dropping the belts though.
I have always said the Knockouts need more time. They are extremely talented and have unique characters. Heck, they could probably have their own show. Winter and Miss T are definitely the weakest.
BFG series is a great idea. With the point system, you can job and not have it affect your crowd reaction.

DISCLAIMER: I'm aware that this is Pro Wrestling and consequently, as with Looney Tunes and the Three Stooges, some questions should emain unasked. Nonetheless I'll take the plunge, as Ed Norton used to say in the sewer.
Is the Spike TV, Wrestling Matters company, in this Bound for Glory Numbers Game of theirs, trying to create the illusion of a fair competition where all the guys have an equal opportunity to earn points -- same number of matches or something? Are they tracking (maybe even posting) win-loss records in addition to the total points they broadcast (no Lee Marshall for this?) on Impact?
Just askin'; if I shouldn't, mea culpa and "fwicassee" away if you choose.

What the hell! The match I was most looking foward to since last week was Mickie James vs Velvet Sky. I really wanted to see that match but maybe they're gonna hype it up a bit more which is a good idea. Giving Velvet Sky her first title reign would be a good idea, I think.
Wow, I thought Sarita looked really creepy, like the female version of Kane. Finding out she has "facial paralysis", that makes it even more creepy. I hope she gets cured. I mean if I had that, not sure I would even be thinking about wrestling, maybe it's not as serious as it sounds, don't know much about that.
I never really thought ODB was gonna be gone, I mean she just signed with TNA again not that long ago, but I guess you never know.
James Storm cut one hell of a promo, and as much as you like to rip them, Mexican America had something to do with it. They do bring something to the table especially Anarquia, still think that guy has talent, would like to see him get a singles push. For a second when he said just look at what those "NO GOOD GABACHAS DID", meaning those "no good white girls". I though he was gonna mention the US womens world cup loss to Japan. That would of been perfect for an Anti American faction. Not sure if the crowd would of cared about that though.
Despite a few good moments, basically the James storm and Velvet sky parts, I thought overall it was a blad show.

Now that was a funny line...

I agree with Adrien. ODB is just not someone I want to look at. For me, she has go away heat and I am tired of seeing her on this angle, or at all.

Kevin, let me ask you a question that relies on aesthetic preference. Based on your work, I think you understand the subtle nature of really great pro wrestling angles. Do you think TNA would be better off without Russo? You can't deny that he's a visionary and a vision for what he thinks pro wrestling should be. Most real wrestling fans would argue that his vision is flawed, and I agree, but do you think it's possible to have a middle-ground between WWE's completely predictable booking (which makes swerves - like CM Punk leaving the company - feel more realistic, because they're done less often) and TNA's Russo-style "swerve-for-the-sake-of-a-swerve" booking (which discards traditional pro wrestling storytelling)?
Both of these booking styles have their benefits... arguably, WWE's moreso than TNA's... but do you think there's any way to combine the two?
I remember a Monday Night Raw a long time ago where Road Dogg Jesse James faced off against The Rock in a WWF Title match. The match wasn't even the main event - it ended the first hour of the show. Logically, that makes no f****** sense. But, like it or not, it was a highly-rated episode and was considered a success.
I hate TNA. I can rarely watch more than 20 minutes of Impact. Hell, most Mondays, I can only stomach 20 or 30 minutes of RAW too.
This CM Punk angle has piqued my interest in WWE - it's the first match since HHH vs Taker and the first angle since the Nexus invasion that has commanded my attention - but I can already envision 20 ways WWE will drop the ball. At least TNA, with Russo at the helm, doesn't even pretend to know where the ball is.
Not to try to come off as trollish, but do you think Russo's only marketing his product to mentally-retarded rednecks who can't follow an ongoing storyline? Do you think he's a smart guy who's setting building blocks down for the next generation? Or, finally, do you think he's halfway there? Much like WWE was halfway there until this CM Punk angle.
The Punk angle may not be killing the Nielson ratings, but it's setting the little John Cena fans up for an attitude-era shakeup. This shakeup will cement an entire generation of lifelong wrestling fans, just like Hogan, Austin, and Flair. Punk may or may not be the figurehead, but the wheels are turning nonetheless.
Will this be Russo's window of opportunity, or will he f*** it up?
RESPONSE FROM KE: Nothing against Russo personally, but it amazes me that with his track record, anybody with a wrestling company would put him in charge of creative.

Im actually starting to appreciate Eric Young comedy act.The man is unscripted off the fly insanity.TNA says eric, there's DLO Brown at 711 buying a slurpie, go, make it happen.A minute later he's telling DLO Brown that he thinks he's Cee Lo green and that he has an alias as "Catfish Jones" and he rolls up Dlo with a school boy for the "win".Top that off he looks like some crazed mountain man. Its gold baby! Especially with the absence of the Jarrets TNA needs its comedy acts like all company's do and that's Eric. Most are missing the comedy that is Bully Ray week in and out("I worked hard on that ab!") and Steiner calling time out(hilarious) I actually watched TNA with a smile for a change. I could just be still high off CM PunkMania and the thought that those nasty ice cream bars may come back makes me giddy but its cool.
Seriously though, so sad to hear about Sarita. Hopefully she can recover.

Longtime WWE fan just now getting in to TNA (the wrestling organization, not, you know, the good stuff.)
Question: Is it my perception or is it reality that the wrestlers in TNA look much more like real people than those in WWE? There are still so many freakishly large guys in WWE (I am sure they are being enhanced by something), but TNA's roster appears much more natural.
If so, I really dig it. I've always thought there's no reason these guys need to be huge - and, in fact, maybe that's why I can tune in to an Impact show and see actual wrestling moves that I haven't seen in WWE in 15 years.
Really enjoying it. Now, if they could just get rid of Tazz...

By the way, Mickie James? Smoking hot. I'll take her over Kelly Kelly any day.

Bully Ray and Mr. Anderson were seriously antagonistic toward each other in the lead-up to Anderson finally joining Immortal. I don't think it's really a stretch to book that antagonism to continue in a toned down way after they've joined the same faction. Personality conflicts like that usually don't completely go away overnight. In fact, if they were suddenly best buddies, that's what might stick out more as being unrealistic writing.

Eric Young is better than the wwe leprechaun by about a million percent. He is clever and is clearly a team player. He reminds me of a young Jericho. Steiner is classic. Bully Ray is a legend. Sting is still solid. TNA has yet to fire on all cylinders. Vince and half his roster have probably unnaturally enhanced physiques, which really youths me off.(probably not punk or christian, but definitely hhh and steph up top). Kev turns a blind eye to some of this. ODB adds something that wwe doesn't have. Ernest Miller is the all time internet heel, but EY is hot on his heels.
RESPONSE FROM KE: Wait a minute. Did you just compare Eric Young to Chris Jericho?

"I’m sure GLAAD would be upset it if had any idea that TNA existed. ..."
Couldn't go one report without taking a shot at TNA could you? Pathetic...
RESPONSE FROM KE: A shot? It's reality, dude. There is a reason TNA can say things that are more offensive than some stuff that WWE gets ripped by GLAAD for, and no one says a word. Why do you think that is?

@Leonard P. Moshe:
Vince Russo can not be called a genius about the attitude era. He had to filter his ideas through Vince McMahon. At WCW, he was a hack. First being like Dr Claw from Inspector Gadget to making himself a charracter. No wonder people ran from WCW. Because no one likes to see him. His swerves are so........horrible. The thing TNA needs to do is get a writer who will push young talent and not just for one week. Stop putting titles on guys who have already had a run (ex. Sting, Hardy, RVD, Angle, ect.) and put it on guys who have not had one yet. Morgan and Roode deserve and have earned that chance to run with it.

Now we just need Layla back, and maybe some WWE-TNA union, and reunite Extreme Expose... aww, who am I kidding?
Posted by: LordStrum | July 25, 2011 12:10 PM
I remember Jericho when he had that public domain entrance music in WCW. He was the lion heart. He was a generic babyface mid carder. I thought he sucked back then . . . as bad as anyone in Nexus. He didn't get good until he 'snapped'. All of a sudden, he was something I looked forward to. Then he became the Chris Jericho we all know and love, still with the same weak moonsault off the 2nd rope.
The Rock wasn't good until he started making facial gestures behind Ron Simmons back one fateful New Years Eve. Blue Chipper Rocky Miavia? . . . sucked.
Yes Eric Young has that kind of potential. Remember how good he was in that suit gimmick? Give him the ball.
RESPONSE FROM KE: I really liked EY as the leader of World Elite, but I personally wouldn't mention him in the same sentence with Jericho and Rock.
Posted by: JoelSzabrow | July 25, 2011 3:35 PM
BTW . . . unnaturally enhanced physiques don't youth me off, they turn me off.
Posted by: Anonymous | July 25, 2011 3:38 PM
Eck, you just mentioned EY in the same sentence as Jericho and The Rock.
RESPONSE FROM KE: Well done.
