WWE Smackdown: Mark Henry continues his path of destruction
It’s becoming clearer with every passing week that WWE is really going all the way with its push of Mark Henry as a remorseless monster heel after years of stop-and-start pushes of “The World’s Strongest Man.”
Henry, coming off an appearance at the Money in the Bank pay-per-view in which he scored a clean win over The Big Show and then “injured” him in a vicious post-match attack, chose Kane as his next victim.
Moments after Kane lost a grueling street fight to Randy Orton in the main event of Friday night’s episode of Smackdown, Henry came to the ring and “Pillman-ized” Kane’s ankle, just as he had done to The Big Show.
As of late, Henry has gone from a guy I really didn’t feel strongly about one way or the other, to someone I look forward to seeing on the show. With his facial expressions and no-nonsense promos, Henry has really taken his game to another level.
What I liked about the angle on Friday’s show is that prior to Henry’s attack on Kane, WWE had re-established Kane as a monster in his own right by having him cut a creepy promo and then taking Orton to the limit. So when Henry decimated Kane, it meant more than if it had happened a few months ago when Kane was marching around the ring doing trombone celebrations with Santino Marella.
Other thoughts on Friday’s show:
I couldn’t believe it when Orton and Kane came out for their match with about 30 minutes still left in the show. I thought there was no way that a match involving Kane that was going more than 20 minutes could be entertaining, but I was pleasantly surprised. Orton and Kane had a really good match. …
Orton was very lucky that he wasn’t seriously injured when his leg went through a hole in the announce table and the table tipped over. …
When Kane – accompanied by scary music and lighting – was talking about becoming more of a monster and less of a human in his promo, I groaned because I thought he was turning heel for the hundredth time. Fortunately, that didn’t happen. …
The opening segment with Orton and new world heavyweight champion Christian was good. I especially liked when Christian told Orton that “nobody likes a whiner.” I also thought it was a nice touch when Orton, in trying to manage his anger, started counting to himself before walking away. Of course, he snapped anyway and began wailing away on Christian. …
The Christian-Ezekiel Jackson match wasn’t bad. It was a good win for Christian, who needed a solid, clean victory after winning the world title from Orton in such a flukish manner at MITB last Sunday. …
I was a little surprised that the past history between Christian and Jackson wasn’t brought up. In the very last ECW title match, Jackson won the championship from Christian. …
The Sheamus-Wade Barrett match (which ended in a double countout) was a compelling heel versus heel encounter. The crowd was behind Sheamus to some extent. As I have said before, I think Sheamus is going to end up being an effective babyface in the very near future. …
Daniel Bryan did a decent job on the mic during his in-ring interview with Michael Cole. The big news is that Bryan said that he is going to cash in his MITB contract next April at WrestleMania XXVIII. I have my doubts about that. A lot can happen between now and then. …
The Bryan-Heath Slater match wasn’t bad, but I thought Slater got in too much offense for a guy at his level going against a guy walking around with a MITB briefcase. Booker T. hit the nail on the head when he said that Slater has a long way to go when it comes to charisma.

kev which one do u like better raw or smackdown storylines
i think raw has the best storyline but raw has only one storyline so far and smackdown has a bunch of good ones and they use their superstar properly
i chose smackdown

It was ridiculous though, to have Daniel Bryan say he's the first man to name the time and place of his shot. RVD took his shot at ECW One Night Stand, and Mr. Kennedy said he was going to cash in at WM24 before Edge won the briefcase from him.

This is purely speculation but i'm seeing Bryan cashing it on a defenseless babyface after a hard fought match in an unexpected heel turn at some point. The reason being is i don't see him as part of the Smackdown main event at mania, not that he does'nt deserve it as a preformer but we allready pretty much know John Cena will have the the WWE title again going into the Mania for his match against The Rock, and where would this leave the Royal Rumble winner? I guess they could do triple threat i just don't see it.

Another site made some comments about Mark Henry I'd like to echo here.
If you're gonna push a monster, really push him all the way - just like they're doing now with Henry. Don't make him a monster for a while like they did before with his last big heel push, and then turn all soft when they turn Face - keep them as a monster throughout.
I too find his appearances way more interesting and entertaining now - and hope they keep it going for as long as possible as it really suits him. And he should pick up a belt of some description along the way - he's bigger and badder than Ezekial Jackson....

Smackdown is becoming boring as hell by the day...
Plus orton seriously can't speak a few lines on the mic.Don't know when the hell will Deadman return to this dead show to make it alive
@Kevin.
My question is related to Raw
Don't you think it's not just a mere coincidence that Triple H is now incharge when CM Punk is going the Stone Colde way in bringing back the Attitude era. Then, we had Vince Mcman as the ultimate villian but now its clear that vince has become too old and cannot take any offence or appear on raw every week. Therefore i guess Triple H is being groomed to be the "Vince Mcman" of this era

What are your thoughts as to why they are "taking out" Big Show and kane?
I could see it if they really were injured and are just working it into the story-line, but I have not read anywhere that that is the reason.
Henry is going to run out of wrestlers to go up against.
Posted by: killermeatballs | July 24, 2011 6:51 PM
I have a feeling that Daniel Bryan is going to lose his MITB briefcase like Mr. Kennedy did to Edge a few years back. Then look out for a heel turn.
As for Mark Henry, I thought he had a pretty good run as a monster heel in 2006 when he injured Batista and then went up against The Undertaker at WM XXII before he got injured later that year. Since the WWE hands out its title like it is an Employee of the Month award and if they want to go all the way with Henry then they should put the belt on him. Lord knows he has paid his dues.

What will happen with the SmackDown roster with Kane on the shelf SD really does not have roster that jumps out like Raw does does will someone turn face to take on Henry maybe a Shamus or Wade Barret or will SD get a superstar from Raw with Sin Cara gone and Kane you may see couple guys on the move .

Henry's push is a testament to how a chance in brands can help a guy. I always find it fascinating to see how different writers favor different wrestlers. Henry was a midcard nobody on Raw, now he's positioned as a top heel on Smackdown. (It's like him an Ziggler have completely switched roles in the company.)
Say what you will about the nearly non-existent brand separation, but at least it allows for interesting twists and gives different wrestlers opportunities to rise and fall.

"I thought there was no way that a match involving Kane that was going more than 20 minutes could be entertaining, but I was pleasantly surprised."
I guess you must have missed the falls count anywhere match between Kane and Edge last year? Or was that less than 20 minutes?
RESPONSE FROM KE: That was a Last Man Standing Match and it did go more than 20 minutes. And, yes, it was entertaining, as well. Good call.

Lighten up on Heath Slater, Kevin. I thought that his match was the best on the show. Sure, his approach-the-ring promos aren't smooth, but they suit him in some hard-to-describe way.

Mark Henry's push is going really nice !!!
I'd like to see them bring in a WWE Legend or a Hall of Fame'er , a old time tough guy who we haven't seen in a while or maybe someone Vince has had some BEEF with back in the day - so it's unexpected and it's a good surprise that will get some pop.
Then just have Mark Henry squash him.
Scott Hall or Sid Vicious are personal favorites of mine.
Hall can still cut a promo then throw his toothpick. Take a bump.
And have himself a payday.
Same with Sid.
With Bryan Danielson - I'd really like to see his image get toughened up a little.
Sheamus running over him is still fresh in my mind. Which means a Hell in the Cell match with some spilled blood is in order.
Kane would be a good opponent. But with his "injury", he's out.
Jinder Mahal would also be nice - but I think it would be too soon for Mahal to take a loss in a match like that.
After looking at the Smackdown Roster - the only name that really popped out at me was William Regal.
Where is William Regal ???
RESPONSE FROM KE: Still doing color commentary for NXT I believe.

This is why I hated the draft this year they send some of the great smackdown talent to RAW and they are not being used properly, and they can be big on smackdown I mean look at Drew Mcyintre who sees him anymore? 'The Chosen One' would be a big help on Smackdown creating new and fresh fueds for eg. Randy Orton and also Kev what on your thoughts on Kane feeling less like a 'monster' each week, when he returns from 'injury' to you expect masked kane to return?

Hey, Eck!
When is your blog slated to get the overhaul the rest of the Sun blogs are getting?
RESPONSE FROM KE: Very soon. I've been trying to put it off for various reasons, one being that I hate change!
Posted by: JTK | July 25, 2011 8:45 AM
Kev, you've gone from thinking Sheamus was totally unappealing to thinking he's going to be an effective babyface. What made you come around on him?
Personally, I think he got pushed to the moon far too quickly, but otherwise I enjoy his work both in the ring and on the mic.
RESPONSE FROM KE: You hit the nail on the head. I did not buy him at the level he was pushed at when they put the WWE title on him and had him main eventing PPVS against Cena and Orton. But he has grown on me to some extent, and I think his character is much more appealing as a babyface.

@Go Fish, good point re Henry/Ziggler. RAW is a death sentence for the undercard, with Ziggler and MacIntyre being prime examples.
I feel certain if Zack Ryder was on Smackdown he'd have been on TV by now (beyond that one inexplicable Nexus non-run-in a few weeks ago). For instance, there's no reason a nonentity like Slater should be in Money in the Bank while Ryder is not...

I think its possibility that The Miz and Alex Riley could end up on SD your thoughts Kev .

I might get slated for this, but I totally agree with Cole about Daniel Bryan. I get that he has paid his dues in the indies, and that he undoubtedly has an abundance of in-ring talent, but he is so BORING. "Ride of the Valkyries" is the perfect entrance music for him, as it is equally as bland as he is. He is being pushed as a "Submission Specialist" but I've only ever seen him use two submission moves. This guy seriously needs to add a solid finishing move to his repertoire. He desperately wants to be Chris Benoit or Kurt Angle, but the difference is they had a decent finisher to accompany their solid submission moves (Piledriver & Angle Slam). If I see another opponent tap out to the LeBell Lock, I think I might throw up. Bryan has zero charisma, and it irks me to watch him pushed down our throats when I have zero believability in him performing on a main event stage. If you wanted to push a mid-carder, surely Rhodes or Barrett would have been better choices? Bryan needs some serious re-packaging, and as someone who plans to attend WM XVII, I seriously hope he is not in the main event in Miami.

The way you feel and felt about Sheamus
reminds me of how you felt of The Miz back in 07 and liking him now
but your right they were "eh" at first

The change sucks! Resist! All the Sun's blogs that use the new format are so user-unfriendly and from my perspective have lost the vibrant commentary. And now I am going to have to register to keep pace on Ring Posts!
RESPONSE FROM KE: As CM Punk said, "I'm just a spoke on the wheel."
Posted by: JTK | July 25, 2011 2:38 PM
Kevin,
I don't quite see why Sheamus would make a good face, so I'd really like to know why you think that. If he were a face, I think he'd just end up as a pale Chris Masters: big, strong, able to put together a solid match, but ultimately boring. It seems like he draws lukewarm heat as it is, so I don't see much changing if he were a "monster face."
RESPONSE FROM KE: I just don't find him all that entertaining as a badass heel. As a face, he could show more personality, and I think he's actually a pretty likeable guy.

Announce Table- 2, Randy Orton- 0.
No Divas' match? Boo.
Posted by: Draven13 | July 25, 2011 5:37 PM
I think that Sheamus would be real good as a "tweener" much like a Triple H back in the day. The fans could be cheering him at one moment, say a beat down on Christian and then bam he gives the big boot in the face to Orton.
Sheamus is in my "fav 5"
1. CM Punk
2. Daniel Bryan
3. Christian
4. Sheamus
5. The Miz

Question:
I know that the term "Pillman-ized" the leg is aboviously refering to Brian Pillman but every since Mark Henry did it to Kane on Friday I've been racking my brain trying to think of who the first guy was that Pillman did it to and what company he was in at the time. Was it Austin? If so was Hollywood Blondes, WCW era Pillman-Austin? Or was is Attitude era, home invasion, WWF Pillman-Austin? Or am I way off and it wasn't Austin at all? Please help!
RESPONSE FROM KE: Austin did it to Pillman in the Attitude Era.
Posted by: Andre the Midget | July 25, 2011 7:13 PM
Ahhhhh!!! That's why I couldn't remember. Pillman had it done to him, he didn't do it to somebody else!! Thanx Eck!! I'm usally pretty spot on with wrestling trivia so you could see how that was killing me.
Posted by: Andre the Midget | July 25, 2011 8:11 PM
As much as I too like how Mark Henry is developing, I also really enjoy how Christian is being booked. I think WWE is finally trying to go all the way with their characters instead of just nudging slightly from the status quo. So for now, Christian winning the title the way he did and how he acted on this show makes perfect sense for his character.
For me, Heath Slater has X-Pac heat. I just think that his one man rock band gimmick isn't working, especially with his look and his drawl. Which is a shame, since I think he has enough talent on the mic and in the ring (it's good, but not spectacular), to be a solid fixture as a mid-card heel, especially since it feels like it'll be easy to hate him, with the right character.
I wonder if a Wade Barrett-Sheamus feud is brewing. And I also wonder if we're seeing the beginning of a Sheamus face turn. I, for one, would prefer if Sheamus stays a firm tweener, and feuds with both faces and heels, sort of what he does now. He'll be less interesting if he does a full turn, whether it's a heel or a face.
Daniel Bryan, I think, can be quite entertaining, when he doesn't have to stop to remember his lines. He can talk well enough, probably on the Rey Mysterio level, which his wrestling will more than make up for. I think Bryan would be better off if he shows a bit more intensity rather than being the smiling goofball that he is now.

I hope to GOD that the WWE will soon bring back the attitude era. Also People like the MIz should be baby Faces not heels.
your Thought Mr Kevin...Thank you
RESPONSE FROM KE: I don't see the Attitude Era coming back as far as being over the top with the sexuality and cursing, but I do think that WWE can bring back the unpredictability of the era along with being slightly edgier.

CM Punk is back looks like he no longer with Nexus has new theme music new shirt Cena looked more heelish and Punk looked babyface .
