Impact Wrestling: X Division match steals the show

The highlight of Thursday’s night’s Impact Wrestling was a match between three guys who aren’t even under contract with the company.

In a three-way match between former TNA X Division stars with a spot on the Destination X pay-per-view a week from Sunday on the line, Low-Ki (formerly known as Kaval in WWE) emerged victorious over Jimmy Yang and Matt Bentley in an exciting, fast-paced and hard-hitting contest.

It was great to see two underrated guys such as Low-Ki and Yang back on TV. They both put on outstanding performances (Bentley was a little out of his league in this one), but Low-Ki was especially impressive. WWE – which released Low-Ki/Kaval last December, just four months after he won NXT Season 2 – definitely missed the boat on him.

Low-Ki now joins Austin Aries and Zema Ion in the four-way match at Destination X, with the winner getting a TNA contract. The final participant will be determined on next week’s show.

Other thoughts on Thursday’s show:

The interaction between Sting and Hulk Hogan in the opening segment was compelling, although the segment probably did go on a bit too long. Sting continues to do a really good job with his new Joker character. ...

I hope this isn’t the case, but it sure seems as if TNA is building to a Sting versus Hogan match. ...

The Sting-Scott Steiner match was serviceable, but the fact that these two are wrestling each other in the main event on a major wrestling company’s prime time television show in 2011 is amazing (and not in a good way). ...

The Mic Check that Mr. Anderson hit on Sting in the post-match was awkward-looking. Speaking of Anderson, I wish TNA would just go ahead and have him join Immortal already. Having him stand alone at this point doesn’t make much sense, because he is clearly a heel and no longer a tweener. ...

I have always respected Eric Bischoff’s talent as a performer, but with that being said, I did not miss him at all this week. He’s definitely been overexposed. ...

Karen Jarrett – who was shown with husband Jeff on location in Mexico – sure did look healthy for someone who tumbled down a flight of stairs four weeks ago and had a severely injured ankle just prior to that. By the way, did I hear correctly that the Jarretts will be back home next week? I thought the stipulation of the parking lot brawl that Jeff lost to Kurt Angle was that he had to move to Mexico. ...

The Gunner-A.J. Styles match was good. Gunner got the win and is now the leader in the Bound for Glory Series. Well, you can’t say TNA isn’t trying to create a new star. ...

I liked the Samoa Joe-Devon match and how the BFGS points system played into Joe’s strategy (which ultimately backfired). I also liked that Devon got the win, as it showed that the results of the matches are not going to be predictable. ...

The bar fight between Joe and Kazarian would have been more effective if we hadn’t seen the exact same scene with Joe and Crimson three weeks ago. ...

It was announced that there will be a four-way X Division match next week between Styles, Rob Van Dam, Christopher Daniels and Jerry Lynn. Now that should be good. ...

The video package with the X Division competitors and Mike Tenay talking up the Ultimate X match and Destination X pay-per-view was well done. ...

What was up with Abyss not being able to find his mask? Speaking of Abyss, it’s hard to take his match with Brian Kendrick at Destination X seriously when Kendrick and Kazarian together were no match for him at Slammiversary. ...

The six-woman elimination tag match that saw Mickie James, Tara and Miss Tessmacher defeat Winter, Angelina Love and Madison Rayne wasn’t bad. I have no idea, though, why Winter and Love were both allowed to stay in the ring against James when tag team rules had applied up to that point. ...

Love is no longer a zombie and now realizes that Winter was drugging her, yet she still chooses to be with Winter. That makes about as much sense Sting suddenly going off the deep end and becoming The Joker. ...

People would pay good money to be on the receiving end of Miss Tessmacher’s “Asstastic” move. ...

Magnus did a nice job on the mic during The British Invasion’s confrontation with Mexican America. Speaking of Mexican America, it’s an act that needs to be scrapped. They have go-away heat. ...

Oh, good, Rob Terry’s back.

I can't wait until the fatal 4 way match, but something tells me it will probably end in a time limit draw or somehow interference.

TNA again proved that with writers who were just a little more competent, they could really turn the heat on WWE. In my opinion, spotlighting the X Division is a really good idea when the competition is determined to push hulking louts.

Did anyone else shake their head when Immortal just let Sting walk away after assaulting Hulk? Why not attack him when it's 6 on 1, especially if he's such a threat? It just didn't make any sense to me.

They're doing a really good job of making Destination X look like a pay-per-view worth spending money on. If Money In The Bank wasn't the following Sunday, I would strongly consider ordering. I really hope they keep the six-sided ring past the pay-per-view, as it's yet another way to distinguish themselves from WWE.

I'm not sure how you can say the match between Devon and Joe wasn't a predictable result. As soon as Joe gave up the pin to go for a submission, I suspected he was going to lose. When he did it the second time, it was a sure loss. It was an entertaining match, though, predictable end aside.

The three-way Knockouts tag was okay. Like you, I'm not sure why it became a handicap match once it was down to only Mickie, Angelina and Winter. This match had a predictable end too, to me. I don't think in this case it really matters, but it's still off-putting.

I agree about Tessmacher's stink face. It makes sense when it's Rikishi. When it's a sexy woman, I don't really get it. It's the same with women who do the Bronco Buster.

So, does everybody just book themselves now?

In the space of just a few months, Anderson has gone from one of the top reasons to tune in to a solid excuse to check the other channels to see what else is on. I hope they can turn his character around.

I'm liking Sting's Joker character. I especially like him calling Hogan by his real name. Of course, he still called Abyss Abyss, so I guess it's not perfect. It's a great way to use someone who really shouldn't be in many matches.

RESPONSE FROM KE: I agree that the way the match developed that it was apparent that Devon was going to win. What I meant was that if you hadn't seen the match and heard that Devon pinned Joe, you'd have been surprised by that.

Say what you will about the Kendrick/Abyss match, it had a darn good promo video. Destination X might actually be worth ordering.

Can someone please tell me, what the heck IS the X Division?

This is what Impact Wrestling needs to do, when it comes to the creative aspect of wrestling they need to be the complete opposite of WWE like focusing on the X-division instead of the Hulk Hogan wannabes. As for the business side of wrestling, they need to totally copy everything the WWE does.

Kevin, the general reaction from fans and even a select few commentators such as yourself have been refreshingly positive about TNA in the last few weeks and rightly so, they have been on a roll but not flawless by any stretch of the imagination.

But I tend to read a lot of other commentators on other sites and it seems like there is no pleasing them whatsoever. They're even blasting Sting's new character which I and judging from your comments you too are positive about. Yet some "journalists" are hacking it off. The BFG series is too convoluted for them, the x-division is a spotfest yada yada yada.

My point is should we now accept that some writers are just going to slag off regardless, thus do we just disregard the dirt sheet commentors? Also I'm beginning to sense that there are some who genuinely want to see TNA fail. Do you feel that is the case?

I'm not saying TNA is beyond criticsm, they aren't, I watch all wrestling and enjoy it. Hence why I dedicate a lot of my time reading about it too.

Good job with the blog by the way Kevin, I have to say yours is a very balanced viewpoint. Nor biased in favour nor against.

RESPONSE FROM KE: I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate the fact that you think that I'm fair in my analysis. There are a lot of TNA fans and WWE haters who don't feel the same way as you, and nothing I say can convince them otherwise.

Always good to read your posts Kevin. Unfortunately theres always people who will dislike something just because. Case in point the millions who will put down almost any video game not called Call Of Duty.
I do like TNA and hope they can build but why not try dropping storylines for a while and put out wrestling matches alone.

Some of the questions you had will be answered on next weeks show.

This wasn't horrible. I have to say again that I like Sing's performance--I just don't like him stealing another movie character whole-hog. He's a great performer--so I'd just like to see him do something unique with the same ability.
I'm hoping that the X-Division is given a real push, instead of the inexplicable Abyss squash that preceded this. The perfomers are exciting, and with a dash of good writing and legitimacy and validity given, it's something that WWE doesn't do at all.
Have to agree on Anderson also---but not in the way of joining Immortal. I'd like to see somehow a return to the funny, sharp, partially unhinged a$$hole character that he built throughout last year, and would seem to be the reason that he was a guy to tune into. I think Ken Anderson is certainly capable of playing a good heel---but this current version is bland, unfunny and far too serious. The man himself seems uncomfortable in the role---or maybe that's just me. He just doesn't seem as loose and dynamic as he has proven to be in the past.
I certainly don't want to be seen as not being able to be convinced that Mr. Eck is capable of being fair and unbiased. I think I saw elements of that at one point--but I don't anymore. In fact, I will go on record as saying that I was wrong in certain aspects of my belief, and I think that stems mostly from me being very frustrated with the overall state of wrestling now. I don't want to fall into a category of watching just because something is the only nationally disseminated wrestling available. I want to see quality, and I feel that quality overall has been degrading in both companies, not unlike it has degraded in a lot of others forms of culture. To just watch it and try to enjoy it because one feels there is nothing that can be done feels too much like blind consumerism, and I think that is an extremely negative cultural form that pervades too much of the national landscape at this point.
I think we can all be overly critical at times, but I also think that we shouldn't give up being critical at all when it is necessary to point out what truly is deficient and not up to the expectations of quality that we can see in the potential of a company and that we should expect as an audience---the whole thing is produced for us---and we are the hinge that it swings on. It doesn't make sense in that context to just accept it when it does not meet the highest of expectations--mostly because it is not at all unreasonable to ask it to.
I will say this positive, from my own perspective...TNA is chock-full of potential. Even WWE is chock-full of potential. I'd just like to see that potential actualized---and the business practices and creative decisions of both companies sometimes preclude that.

Is Angelina LOVE a pornstar?....coz she sure as hell looks like one

"Case in point the millions who will put down almost any video game not called Call Of Duty."

Like the battlefield fanboys ripping on COD just for the sake of ripping on CoD, Or claiming that COD fans are ignorant/jerks when it comes to non-cod videogames..... hypocritical much?

GlenWho has a point. Here is an analogy to give you some perspective, Kevin: Call of Duty is like WWE while Battlefield is like TNA. Some vocal fans of the latter are derisive toward fans of the former ("COD fanboy" is analogous to "WWE mark") simply because they have a different entertainment opinion. Whether it's Battlefield over Call of Duty or TNA over WWE, some people seem to have a psychological need to bash the leader in its field and rally around the number two.
