CM Punk causes controversy with gay slur (with video)
A week after cutting a worked shoot promo on Raw that had the wrestling world buzzing and resulted in a story line suspension, CM Punk’s mouth is once again the source of controversy – and this time it isn’t an angle.
While jawing with a fan at ringside during a WWE live event Monday in Adelaide, Australia, Punk called the fan a “homo.” The incident was caught on video, and TMZ picked up on it.
WWE, which works with GLAAD (The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) on its well-publicized anti-bullying campaign, issued the following statement in response to Punk’s usage of the gay slur:
"WWE does not condone this type of language or bias and we reinforce that with our talent who are independent contractors."
Punk later apologized for the remark on Twitter. He wrote:
“I'm glad TMZ posted that video because everybody needs to be held accountable for their [B.S.], me included. What I said was [B.S.]. I'm embarrassed. I own up to being a total douche in this situation and I offer a sincere apology to anybody I hurt with careless words.”

It's always funny how whenever there is any bad publicity, you can bet the WWE will play the "independent contractor" card.

CM Punk is fast becoming my favorite wrestler. He made a thoughtless remark, but he manned up and gave a sincere and extraordinary "apology." Instead of the standard "I'm sorry to anybody I offended...," he came right out and said he was in the wrong and he was sorry.
CM Punk!

Hopefully this doesn't turn into a thing.

I love this video. CM Punk looks like the real deal. Not that I ever doubted it, but right now he's riding on a crest of a wave.
Posted by: Anonymous | July 5, 2011 3:03 PM
Punk should know better. Maybe he thought he could let his guard down since he was in Austrailia, but camera phones and the internet are everywhere. John Cena used a gay slur in a promo, and then Michael Cole recently used a gay slur also. WWE's realationship with GLAAD must be on real shaky ground right now.
I don't see this as that big of a deal, but Punk had a lot of momemtum going, and this makes him seem like a bit of a hypocrite considering it seems like he was about to criticize McMahon for being a bully in his promo.
Posted by: Maurice B. | July 5, 2011 3:20 PM
I'm glad this was handled in the same swift and respectful fashion that it would've been had Punk issued a racial or religious slur.
Posted by: Stefan | July 5, 2011 3:21 PM
Eh. People get wrapped up in the moment, especially with a wrestler as intense as Punk. God knows I've called people things I wouldn't want broadcast all over the internet. He seems genuinely sorry, and I'm hoping this blows over.
I'm surprised the WWE didn't try to stop the video, since it blows a hole in their kayfabe suspension.
RESPOSNE FROM KE: Actually, WWE issued a statement after the "suspension" that said that Punk and WWE had agreed that he would fulfill his live event obligations.

Cool mustache Punk is sporting. I liked the part where he called him "Crocodile Dundee" and told him he has a vagina.

For my part, I'm happily not burdened by any white, liberal, hetero guilt, but for the life of me, I cannot figure out the sports stars & celebrities who do not understand that this type of language is no longer allowed in the public discourse. I don't use it because my mother taught me to treat people as I would like to be treated & I still live in the real world. Do they simply not understand or pay attention or is it such a huge part of their private lives & private discourse that they can't help but spew it in public when the right button gets pushed???

Take one word out of Punk's "fan interaction" and this is a non-news story. We live in such a P.C. atmosphere that a "heel" wrestler makes news for calling a fan ( who was taunting him btw) a "homo".
Posted by: August | July 5, 2011 3:56 PM
To all the John Cena haters out there he got CM Punk reinstated and the match between Cena and Punk is back on and he almost made wwe championship vacated when gave to Vince and if looses Cena will be fired .
Posted by: ryan | July 5, 2011 4:04 PM
It was an unfortunate incident, and I'm happy CM Punk apologized so quickly. The apology seems sincere too, which is more than can be said for most celebrities caught saying similar things.

"Who Cares?" -- Really?
As a big fan of Punk, I am surprised and really disappointed in his homophobic comments. Perhaps Punk is a great performer and a lousy human being. Perhaps I have just given him too much credit. I also can't help but wonder if his comments were racially directed, would the outcry be worse? Yes, he offered the obligatory apology (per an over-zealous publicity department, no doubt.)I work with young people every day. When they see or hear people they look up to speak like this, they think it is acceptable. Sad. Given the recent homophobic slurs by WWE talent in the past, it makes this incident even more shocking.
A sad indictment on how acceptable and pervasive homophobia is in our society.
You lost a fan here, Punk....

"You lost a fan here, Punk.... "
Uhh, really?
The guy gave a sincere apology and indicated that he is embarrassed and truly feels remorse for a poor choice in words. His job is to get a rise out of people and make them hate him, and he does so by tiptoeing the lines of what is acceptable. He crossed that line, said he is glad he was called out on it, and has indicated that he regrets his actions (which, by the way, caused no physical harm to anyone). Seems to me like he's a standup guy who could have - and wants to - do a better job picking his vocabulary.

Eck ... Did your traffic go up with just a mention of Punk? :)
RESPONSE FROM KE: Yep!
Posted by: JTK | July 5, 2011 4:55 PM
Give ie a rest.
CM Punk is a heel. He is doing his job getting the fans worked up.
If it is such a big deal to call someone a "homo" why isnt it a big deal to call someone "fat" or a "loser?" It makes no sense that saying one thing is bad and by saying it makes Punk a "bad guy" when you have Miz, Jericho, Anderson and every other heel that has been on TV in the past few years calling someone in the crowd fat or a loser. If it is about hurt feelings then these words should be banned as well.
Its wrestling people. Its fake. It is a big show to entertain fans.If you are having trouble telling the differance you have problems. If you have problems talking to your kids about right and wrong then that is also your problem.
And in the end, this is the problem with the new PG WWE. Its a show. It is ment to make you feel shock and awe when you watch it and except for CM Punk recently those days are gone.
Yes it is wrong to call names but it is "Sports Entertainment." Grow up people. Sit and enjoy the show and quit complaining over little things.
Posted by: mike | July 5, 2011 6:05 PM
@Holden - Why do you automatically categorize Punk as homophobic? For using a word once in public? Do you assume that this automatically makes him hate or fear gays, which would be the definition of homophobic? You seem to make a jump to a conclusion quite quickly. Seems to make you just as much a judgmental and hate filled person as you make Punk out to be based on a single word.
Posted by: Scott | July 5, 2011 6:11 PM
well, punk is a heel... he has a heel speech, and confront with fans as a heel should do...
I think that as long as he remains in his character he can say whatever he wants to get heat...
I truly think for example that the nazi thing JBL did in a house show in germany was a brilliant heel move as it was a big heel character move...
I understand that it could offend some persons, but he is supposed to be the bad guy...
In a movie do you expect a bad guy to be politically correct and say that he loves everybody and don't kill anyone?
please keep in mind that it's only entertainement...
ps : excuse my english, i'm french do not pratice my english very often
Posted by: Johan | July 5, 2011 6:28 PM
Even if Punk knows it's wrong, sometimes old habits are hard to kill. This has been engrained in our culture for decades - it's not going to be as easy as turning off the switch.
Posted by: Travis | July 5, 2011 6:29 PM
Well Holden, he would be sad (I guess lol) but he'd keep it moving, just like you, in a heartbeat, given that you seemed to have never really been a fan of his in the first place. It's funny when folks say that "you lost a fan all my respect is gone, hell did you REALLY ever have it for in what is in the end of the day a complete total STRANGER? Hmmm, now yes like the other guy said public figures and people need to realize that some stuff they can't say at ALL anymore and hopefully Punk realizes that, and not just chalk it up to the other guy or girl goading him itno it (he was though) or thinking that he should let his guard down just cause he might be leaving anyway. Also it has nothing to do with being PC for all you "let's say whatever you want to say " folks, but still don't claim nothing about losing anything when most of us are fickle about that and put too much emphasis on complete strangers anyhow(exception of world/local leaders, medical/police and religious leaders etc).

Isn't it wonderful to have homosexuals policing how we speak to one another?
Posted by: Mothman | July 5, 2011 7:01 PM
Kev- Oh, I hadn't seen that.
Ryan- I love wrestling fans like you.
Holden- perhaps judging a person's entire character by an utterance made under stress isn't the most productive standard. I'm uncertain Punk's apology on Twitter can be called the product of "an over-zealous publicity department" given both the content and the track record of Punk's Twitter account. Is it not possible that the CHARACTER C.M. Punk went a touch overboard and struck out at a fan? Is it necessarily that the man Phillip Brooks is a homophobe? Or because he used a gay slur (?), is he beyond repair?
Posted by: Kyle | July 5, 2011 7:12 PM
Couldn't care less - I was at the show about 5 rows from where it was happening and the fan was giving it to Punk. Politcal correctness has gone crazy. Punk apologised, seemed sincere lets move on and not hang the man.

Btw its funny how that guy is trying 2 act as if he will confront cena.He should remember that Punk is po wrestler and he will twist him like he mentions.
I loved the way punk said. You have a Vagina lol
He should be doing movies. He is the New Marlon Brando
Posted by: Syed Habib Fawaz | July 5, 2011 7:37 PM
Well you made note to what happened Kev, but what are your thoughts on the situation?
I can certainly understand people being mad about the insult, but at the same time it was said in the heat of the moment and Punk just lost control of his tongue, it happens (look at Kobe last year). But I'm glad he offered a sincere apology. Hopefully this is all we hear of this event and it will allow this story line to play out.
RESPONSE FROM KE: I'll probably weigh in on a separate entry.

You aren't needed, Holden. To expect a swift turn around of vernacular used for a long time just because people are becoming more welcoming of the non hetero lifestyle is ridiculous. Blacks are still called the N word despite the progress we've made. Quit crying. He apologized.
Posted by: G | July 5, 2011 8:24 PM
Seriously, why is this an issue. CM Punk apologized. Yet we live in society today that takes offense at just about everything and we have a new victim class every day.
The church gets mocked and defamed all the time by Hollywood yet they are never made to apologize. Still waiting for the day when Hollywood grows a pair and makes movies about the horrors that happen in Islamic countries. You can ridicule Christianity and nothing ever happens. CM Punk calls a guy a "homo" and it's a story. He is a heal, he is supposed to be an A$$hole.
Posted by: Flairfan | July 5, 2011 8:32 PM
To be fair, it's a horrible thing to say, and that's why it's a brilliant way to get heat.
Either way, Punk's apology was brilliant. He knew he did something wrong, owned up to it and apologised for it.
Posted by: Brucey | July 5, 2011 8:46 PM
who is anyone do disagree? Punk's playing a controversial and in your face character, not his interpretation of an upstanding hero.
Did you see how delusional and neurotic
Vince looked on RAW last night? As even Cena was informing him that the MITB was gonna be bigger than Mania, he was was acting as if he had no idea what was going on. McMahon put on a show as if it was Cena who we cared about, saying his career would be on the line, and almost was confused by the crowds reaction, thinking it was actually HIM and CENA who the fans wanted to see. As Cena was clearly trying to sense that fact into him. Now Punk says a few words that are mean to a certain demographic, and now just because that certain demographic is riding a high horse right now in political correctness the WWE's really gonna bury him and not renew his contract? Sounds like Vince is just pissed Punk actually was the man, as the week has progressed out, and RAW was filmed last Tuesday. I wouldn't be suprised if there was a riot next Monday, and I wouldn't be suprised if this ends WWE's wave in being the empire in wrestling for good. As far as i'm concerned this is not just a complete and utter spit in the face to Randy Savage and Roddy Piper, but Arn Anderson and Adrian Ardonis as well. PUKE.

i happen to think the whole video was pretty funny
Posted by: dr dude | July 5, 2011 9:43 PM
Although I don't obviously agree with what CM Punk said in the video - I think he goes overboard with the rest of it, too - but he's only really choosing things to say that rile up the heckler. Given the obviously testosterone-addled and intoxicated state of the fan, jabbing at his buffoonish masculinity is what any good heel would do.
Not defending that, but being told you're girly by a pro wrestler surely stings a man's man a lot, and that's why Punk said what he said. I think that gets lost in translation as far as the reporting.
Posted by: Solomon | July 5, 2011 10:08 PM
He did offer a good apology, but I do have to say: People need to relax. Words, slurs, what have you are only as effective as you let them be. Sometimes, BS is just BS.
Posted by: Hunter | July 5, 2011 10:46 PM
There comes a time when you gotta look at the Pro Wrestling Industry as a whole and say maybe it just doesn't have it's spark anymore. Maybe it's no longer willing to get out there and do the work that requires a business to grow.
Like defending it.
You ever notice how Main Stream Media will always report the bad stuff about Pro Wrestling.
Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero and Macho Man dying. Anything about drugs (Jeff Hardy) or steroids ( Kurt Angle).
DUI's ( Rob Van Damm, Sabu, Alex Riley, Shane Helms) and now even trash talk at a show (CM Punk).
They never cover any of the good stuff.
I haven't seen anyone from inside the Pro Wrestling Industry, basically Vince McMahon going on TV and defending his industry.
He put everyone out of business.
Took away their voice.
And now all he's concerned about is HIS WIFE becoming a Senator.
It's time for VINCE to get off his butt and start defending his business.
He should be doing a Media Blitz right now about how the WWE is a market specific entertainment sponsored by private funding and if organizations like GLAAD are going to bash his intellectual property, he would appreciate it if they would actually get involved in the business rather then just showing up when they hear something they don't like.
That way , you either get GLAAD off of your butt, or you force them to become an additional outlet. Then at least if you have to change the position and direction of your business, at least you have the benefit of additional exposures.
Vince has gotten so fat in the wallet.
At this point in his career, all he cares about is his invite every year to The White House Corespondents Dinner.

Come on. kids call each other worse names all the time and mean it. Punk is in characther and selling it nicely. Looks like Rey Mysterio in the badground throwing out t-shirts, so why wouldnt you want Punk outside ring working over some (possibly) drunk fans.
The only loss here is the loss of perception that everything must be peachy-keen with all the i's and t's crossed. Punk didn't cross a line. People who don't care to understand are the ones who crossed the lines.
CM punk being CM punk is no different than lebron james being lebrn jame or Shaq being Shaq. Take it for what its worth, and realize "homo" has goo and bad meanines.
What's up my brother is no different then hey, what's up homie
BBottoline is he PLAYS a PUNK ROLE, so dont get offensive rom him PUNKING someone;s fro-buzz ut. Sheesh
I think all his comments are good for creating contriversitty. Go PUNK!!

REALLY? THIS CAUSES CONTROVERSY? THIS IS A WRESTLER PLAYING A PART....ITS FAKE....AND GUESS WHAT HE'S A BAD GUY. THATS HIS JOB TO MAKE YOU HATE HIM. HES SUCCESSFUL IN DOING THAT HERE AND BECAUSE OF THAT HE CAUSES A STIR BECAUSE OF HIS USE OF THE WORD "HOMO?" REALLY? ITS WHAT GUYS DO. ITS NOT A SLAM(PUN INTENDED) TO ANYONES SEXUAL PREFERENCE, ITS SIMPLY CALLED RIBBING. ITS THE MOST ON-POINT, UNSCRIPTED, IN YOUR FACE WAY TO BE COMICAL. IF YOU HAVE AN ISSUE WITH THIS YOU NEED TO GET OUT MORE OR GET INTRODUCED TO WRESTLING OR THE 21ST CENTURY FOR THAT MATTER.

Good for Punk for manning up and admitting he was wrong. If this was Cena, he would probably just say he was misunderstood or misquoted or taken out of context or whatever again.
Posted by: Anonymous | July 6, 2011 12:07 PM
Everyone seems to be working from the assumption that Punk got carried away and misspoke.
I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Punk did it on purpose, knowingly over-stepped a line of propriety to stir up some more mainstream interest -- probably got OKed by Vince, too, just like the RAW rant.
Punk was going "below the belt (or is it championship? -- sorry!!)" with some serious heelish vigor, you might say.
Posted by: Boomerang41144 | July 6, 2011 1:41 PM
Safe bet this will fit in nicely to his promo on the next RAW (live). I can already hear him saying "WWE vilified (him) overseas and all homo---sapeans get all up in arms, but you notice, no one else had their footage show up online? No one else had their actions up for scrutiny..." (then repeat reasons for leaving).
Posted by: Mr. Sarcasm | July 6, 2011 4:51 PM
Punk only says sorry for 3 reasons, either because he DOES feel sorry, or because he HAS to say sorry, or both.
I happen to recall a video of his infamous "You dumb bitch! I'm not holding a microphone!" back during his indie days.
Welcome to the BIG business Punk. People don't give two sh*ts what you say or do if you work indie unless it looks like someone wants to REALLY kill you. But when you are part of a BIG COMPANY that does shows for all ages and all over the world you REALLY have to watch what you say. In this day and age, everyone has a camera of some kind, and people like TMZ are always the first to make a story about it.
But since you don't want to keep playing ball by someone elses rules, you can go back to small town shows and only get exposure through the internet, namely more youtube videos.
-
Good to man up though.
*waits to get flamed by Punk supporters and WWE haters*
Posted by: Puck | July 7, 2011 2:52 AM
@ Puck
I guess this would fall on the "because he HAS to say sorry" side of the issue, (and I must admit that my only exposure to Punk's work has been in his WWE incarnation -- heck, I still don't know an anaconda vice from a plain old bad habit) my suspicion here is that Punk is still "on script," so to say.
In the video, Punk's not out of control (check out the outburst last week by the Big Show look-alike pitching for the Blue Jays; now he was "shooting"). Even Punk's word choice is not in line with current NBA-style trash talk that's "gone too far." There's a six-letter synonym for "homo" that's alot more common and (I think) a bit more inflamatory ... ditto for the v- word.
It seems damn near ridiculous to be creating a heirarchy of non-PC slurs, but in an odd way it's becoming necessary and a built-in dilemma for a "heel" performer, as Mr. Eck and others have more eloquently observed. (Lance Storm, for one, has addressed this dilemma in some depth in the past.)
Wouldn't it be great if Vince McMahon and CM Punk were working the papparazzi (sp?) -- addressing a fifth wall?
And for the record, I don't like flaming -- I prefer mine fricasseed, I mean fwicasseed.

Do movie actors portraying homophobic characters have to issue apologies through the press after the film is shown?
Or, even more pertinently due to it being a live event, do theatre actors have to apologise for offensive language in the context of their performances?
Obviously this was slightly different in that it was adlibbed rather than scripted, but even so, it's clearly part of the character.
I suppose, at most, you could criticise the outburst for not being PG, but then it wasn't a televised show, and I don't know if the house shows have content restrictions in place.
Newspapers or websites reporting Punk's words as an "offence" in the same way as they would with real sports stars or actors away from the screen or stage, and who would likely look down on wrestling fans for following something that's "not real", are proving to be the biggest marks of all.

- Yellow belly chickensh*t, achieving most of your victories through illigal outside help.
- for your hypocrisy, making big talk about V.McMahon's ass being kissed by everybosy else but yourself - let me puke - All you're bitter about is your place in the line of the Mr. McMahon's ass kissers.
-and last but not least for waisting the time of professinal wreatling fans by having to watch your stupid talk show...
