Impact Wrestling: Mr. Anderson becomes Immortal – finally
It’s hard to believe that just a little over a month ago, I thought Mr. Anderson was one of the most compelling and entertaining characters in wrestling.
Anderson was a legitimate tweener with no friends. An admitted “a**hole” who wasn’t above doing whatever it took to win, he also was an anti-hero who battled against a corrupt regime, and because of that, he had the support of the fans.
Then for some reason he began dressing up like old-school, blonde-haired Sting and suddenly became a heel. He also became a lot less interesting of a character.
After weeks of being courted by Immortal, Anderson finally joined the heel faction on Thursday night’s episode of Impact Wrestling. Of course, even thought it was obvious that Anderson was going to become a member of Immortal, TNA tried to make it suspenseful by pulling a swerve that made no sense.
In a handicap match that pitted Bully Ray, Scott Steiner, Gunner and Abyss against Kurt Angle (Sting was supposed to be Angle’s partner, but he was laid out by Hulk Hogan backstage prior to the match), Anderson joined the match in progress and acted as if he was going to help Angle.
After getting the hot tag, Anderson punched each member of Immortal and put Ray in position for the Mic Check. Then he let Ray go and instead hit the Mic Check on Angle, who was pinned by Ray. To add to the “drama” of what Anderson was going to do next, the four Immortal members surrounded him while he assumed a position as if he might have to defend himself. Then he jumped into Abyss’ arms and celebarted. Surprise!
Why Anderson punched his new allies before joining them is something that makes sense only in the mind of Vince Russo. And for those keeping track, during Anderson’s 18 months in TNA, he has gone from heel, to babyface, to tweener and back to heel.
Other thoughts on Thursday’s show:
To further tease that he might reject Immortal’s demand that he join them, Anderson said before the handicap match that he doesn’t react well to ultimatums, just ask “a certain former employer.” Really, Ken? Weren’t you fired by that “former employer?” And shouldn’t you be over it by now? ...
Once again, the best match on the show was the X Division contest between three guys not on the roster. High-flyer Jack Evans put on a “dynamite” performance (old-school fans will get that obscure reference) as he defeated Tony Nese and Jesse Sorensen in a three-way to earn the fourth and final spot in the match at Sunday’s Destination X pay-per-view in which the winner receives a TNA contract. Evans versus Low-Ki versus Austin Aries versus Zema Ion just might steal the show. ...
The four-way between Rob Van Dam, A.J. Styles, Christopher Daniels and Jerry Lynn – which was won by RVD – wasn’t bad, but I was expecting a lot more. ...
Sting had me laughing out loud as he did his Joker gimmick while Hogan was assaulting him backstage. After getting punched in the mouth a few times and maniacally laughing about it, a woozy Sting suddenly realized that he was about to get clobbered with a bat. “Oh, crap,” he said matter-of-factly just before Hogan hit him with the bat. ...
The video package for the Styles-Daniels match at Destination X, which focused on their real-life friendship, was good. ...
I have no idea what Brian Kendrick was talking about in his mumbo-jumbo promo with Abyss, but his delivery was good. Having Abyss again destroy Kendrick – who is challenging for Abyss’ X Division title Sunday – sure is an odd way to try to get people excited about their match. ...
Ray did a nice job on the mic during the opening segment when Immortal issued the ultimatum to Anderson. ...
The Crimson-Bobby Roode match was OK. There is very little drama in Crimson’s matches right now because of the winning streak gimmick. ...
Velvet Sky beating ODB and Jackie in a handicap match was preposterous. ODB and Jackie had said that they would leave TNA if they lost, but I hope they don’t keep their word. Well, I at least hope that ODB is sticking around. ...
“The Pope” D’Angelo Dinero giving up an opportunity to score a pinfall victory and gain seven points in the Bound for Glory Series during a tag match that pitted him and Devon against Matt Morgan and James Storm didn’t make sense to me. I get it that Dinero is playing mind games with Devon, but it still strains credibility that Dinero wouldn’t take the points – especially when he has yet to get on the board.

Wow the x division it heating up! These guys are what made me want to watch TNA in the first place. It's great to see them get some air time. Speaking of air time. Jack Evans is phanominal! I can't wait to see him and low ki go at it this Sunday. Just wish they would have brought back jay lethal, son jay dutt, and Peaty Williams those guys put on some of the best x division matches i have ever seen. I wish TNA would wise up drop hulk, bichoff and ruso and bring in someone like hay man who is more willing to do a show with the younger guys and x division being the center of it.

I don't get the Sting/Joker thing at all. I will admit the commentary is funny, but I can't make sense of it. He snapped, but he is acting like the Joker?? What would Sting do if he snapped. That is what I like to see. Every thing else Kevin wrote I agree with. Velvet Sky winning... Far feteched, but she looked good doing it.

The main thing that stuck to me from this weeks impact was the horrible Velvet Sky sh*t. It was great that she got a push, but please... her winning two on one matches needs to stop now! Velvet Sky couldn't beat ODB in a real fight on her best day, much less ODB and Jackie at the same time.
I knew this was gonna happen, and this reaked since they announced it last week. I was hoping ODB would win because I didn't think she was gonna leave but I had a feeling Velvet Sky was gonna win yet another Handicap match. I don't get why they're making ODB out to be the total bad guy here, since she's fighting against the idea of womens wrestling being dominated by barbie dolls. Velvet Sky saying she was always the runt growing up(somehow, I really doubt that), and that she's tired of getting picked on. This story just sucks. I doubt ODB is really gonna leave, she didn't sound like it after the match, I really hope not.
Overall, it was kinda like last weeks show but less interesting. I still liked the Bound for Glory series, except the tag matches. Crimson's undefeated storyline needs to get interesting fast or they should just drop it.
Not much interesting happening right now on Impact. The best thing for me is to see where this Hogan vs Sting stuff is going.

The X division match was UNBELIEVABLE!....and these guys didnot even botched once.Man these guys are so amazingly talented and thy are not in Tna or WWE.Forget WWE they employ people who cant even wrestle like santino etc and they hype Sin "Botch" Cara when Jack Evans has more talent in his little finger than the whole of Sin Cara.
@kevin
I am sure you are impressed by Jack Evans.Like he said he looks like a video game fighting Character. Why doesn't WWE pick up such great talent instead of The talentless wrestlers which are majority of WWE.

I think this is the best sentence I have read in a long time: "Then he jumped into Abyss’ arms and celebarted."
You forgot to mention that Jack Evans had the crappiest ring attire ever - from his Nike sneakers to those god-awful trunks with his name applied as if his senile grandmother thought it was attractive after she sewed those weird white rectangles on. Hopefully he can pony up for some new garb for the PPV. Someone should politely pull him aside and remind him wrestling is a visual medium...

These columns are no fun when I agree 100% with everything you have to say, Kevin. But in this case, I don't really get how anyone can disagree. I honestly wonder if TNA would even still be around if people didn't hate WWE so much.
Maybe it was just me, but have you ever seen such a obviously fake bat shot as the last one Hogan delivered to Sting?
That said, I still think that Destination X is shaping up to be one hell of an event. All WWE has going for it is the Punk vs Cena match, and I won't be surprised if they screw that up by the end of this week's Raw.
It seems obvious that TNA is run under the goal of being the 21st century's WCW. I just wish they could be the good WCW. There's no point in running your company through the treads left by post-Fingerpoke of Doom WCW. We know where that leads. Does TNA not remember?

On Thursday I kept having to ask myself 'Who are the babyfaces and who are the heels?' throughout the show. Even the audience didn't seem to know, cheering Robert Roode against Crimson (I can't blame them).
Why should people care about Kendrick winning the X-Division Title when he's acting like a heel towards another heel in Abyss? At least Kendrick was entertaining on the mic, if not intelligible.
And i'd be surprised if even Anderson knows what he is himself, seeing how he's flip-flopped between Face, Heel and Tweener so much.
And as for Velvet Sky beating both ODB and Jackie and 'The Pope' not taking the points for himself: Nonsense! I hope Vince Russo can make sense of all of this 'cause it's hurts my head trying to. . .

Somehow Anderson joining Immortal was predictable and stupid but the way Cena reacted about CM Punk being suspended wasnt. Typical again. WWE is for kids and lamebrains like Eck.

No mention of Evans's 630 splash? One of the sickest moves I've seen in a long time. Anyone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think anyone's done that in TNA or WWE since Jerelle Clark (sp) used it years ago in TNA. They even called him Mr. 630. I know Evans competed in the X-Cup before, but I'm not sure if it was before or after Clark competed in the X-Division. Also, why no mention of Ultimate X or Douglas Williams's open challenge? I'd love to see a big return of maybe Petey Williams, Sonjay Dutt, or Jay Lethal

"Dynamite" Jack Evans. The "Unpredictable" Johnny Rodz. "Pistol" Pete Sanchez. Manuel Soto...god, I miss the good ol' days!

@danielsullivan
I guess Jack Evans was not competing in some beauty contest or taking part in a fashion parade!.You are looking past his in ring ability against his attire. But like TNA says "WRESTLING MATTERS"

Bobby Roode should never job to Crimson. Hopefully they give him the heroes push by having him win out with the bad shoulder so he can get a title shot.
I too hope ODB stays. She is awesome. Anderson on the other hand...

It's officially really bad. I am a strong supporter of the idea of competition to increase overall wrestling quality, and I have supported TNA to that end, but it's just ridiculous at this point.
Despite what some people may think about him, Anderson can be a solid cornerstone of a competitive wrestling company---and now they've ruined his character and momentum.
Kendrick has shown promise, moreso than he ever has before---and he gets constantly squashed.
The X-Division, made up of players not even in TNA, and the majority of which will not continue past their one appearance, provide the best wrestling---but with the exception of the best among them at Destination X, are not likely to get a push or storyline attention.
Bobby Roode, a guy who has worked hard and is a main event talent has been used to put over a guy with rough potential who needs a lot of polish and experience before getting a big push like this.
The most compelling storyline, (relatively), concerns two old guys who should be concentrating on helping to put over new talent, and involves a direct rip-off of a movie character partially created by a guy who died while playing the role and perhaps deserves a bit more respect as playing the character so well might have been part of what contributed to his death.
Where's Matt Morgan now, after Hogan's accolades? Where did the tag division go? Why is Vince Russo allowed to continue to work in a business in which he has consistently proven he has no real understanding thereof?
Most importantly, why should we care anymore? I respect all of the performers and their hard work--but the creative side of this company is driving it into the ground. We've all said that an awful lot, but you could hear the thump and see the dust with this show.
Nobody wins in wrestling anymore. The fans are fed swill, the lack of valid competition continues to really allow WWE to sludge along at number one with little dynamism or shine, (with the exception of Punk--but give that a couple of months--let's see if it really sustains)--and worse, the workers and perfomers are not being given a chance to grow and refine their talent and to have a variety of high-quality places where risks are taken to give them a chance and where competition makes their work and talent valued.
Are we seeing the death-knell of wrestling? If it continues thusly, where will everything be in ten years? Will it be like other established things in this culture that have disappeared in the last decade or so? Why do people have such trouble beleiving that it's happening even while they're watching it happen? Even Rome didn't stand forever. In fact, nothing ever has. Should we accept this? Is it possible to learn from mistakes and to change? How the f**k do I know?

I think he meant Burger King. They once told him that if he didn't work on Sunday, then not to come back on Monday, and well, you just ask them how well that went!

Mr. Anderson joining Immortal don't care boring and stale but the X. division has been real fun to watch seeing new faces and old has been interesting also love the Bound For Glory series Crimson has all the tools to a big player and i like the new push of Velvet Sky
Posted by: ryan | July 10, 2011 4:19 PM
I thought that the Velvet Sky match was reasonably plausible. Jackie did take a chair shot to the head "accidently" from ODB, to do the job. Had that not happened then I would agree that Velvet "winning" would be far fetched. I also chuckled at the "oh crap" line and was pleasantly surprised that Sting didn't magically recover to make the save. The AJ et al match looked like slo-motion compared to the X Division qualifier.

I'm really enjoying the new Sting gimmick. It's just fun.
Posted by: Travis | July 10, 2011 9:25 PM
I'm not 100% on this, but to me it seemed like the Hogan-Sting segment had a punch sound effect added to Hogan's punches, which was distracting.
It made me think that maybe Hogan and Sting faked the whole thing and Hogan could turn on Immortal.
Although, I'm probably giving them too much credit, I'm sure Hogan just wanted his punches to sound tougher.
RESPONSE FROM KE: I'm 100 percent positive that a sound effect was added. I thought it worked, though.

So Bischoff's defense of a hack product is that Spike is happy with the ratings and the IWC just doesn't get it.
The 10% doesn't just mean the IWC anymore. It stands for the audience drop from 6/30 to 7/7 because of crap writing like this.
Let's just get Kevin Sullivan back and reboot the Dungeon of Doom to get Impact back on track. They can revive the "they" storyline and have Eric Young looking for The Master again. Get him back helmet and all, The Yeti, and even toss Shark Boy in this reboot. From there Meng can come back as The Shark and feud with Shark Boy for stealing his spot, or be his dad. You never know. This stuff just writes itself.
Then Meng can join Immortal after a vicious triple heel turn and refer to himself as King Haku and align with Hogan against the DoD since Hogan injuring Harley Race made him King in the first place. Kevin Sullivan could even stay to join the Angle/Jarrett storyline once the DoD fizzles out. Jarrett is down for using death for his TV gain.
Best of all, you could get these guys for scale.
