WWE Smackdown: Christian disses the peeps
After Christian attacked Randy Orton at the end of last week’s Smackdown, the question was whether Christian had actually turned heel or if he was going to be a tweener and gradually morph into a heel.
That question was answered during the opening segment of Smackdown Friday night. Christian, who came out to a mixed reaction, cut a promo in which he blamed his recent misfortune on the fans (aka his peeps) and said that he no longer wants anything to do with them.
After saying that he would never talk to the fans again, Christian drove home the fact that he was a full-blown heel by calling Michael Cole into the ring and saying that Cole was the only person he would talk to. Having Christian associate himself with the hated Cole guaranteed that he’d get booed.
Christian’s promo was solid, although I wouldn’t categorize it as a home run.
Later in the show, Christian got more heat on himself for refusing to meet Orton in the ring face to face after Orton called him out. Christian instead chose to speak with Orton from the parking lot via the big screen. After getting Orton to agree to defend the world heavyweight title against him at the Capitol Punishment pay-per-view on June 19, Christian then got in his car and drove off.
If you’ve been watching wrestling for any length of time, you know what that meant. Of course, Christian came back to the arena to interfere in Orton’s non-title, no-disqualification match against Sheamus in the main event.
Christian once again KO’d Orton with the title belt, which allowed Sheamus to cover Orton for the victory.
With Sheamus getting screwed out of the title by Christian last week and then pinning the champion this week, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was added to the Orton-Christian match at Capitol Punishment to make it a triple threat.
Other thoughts on Friday’s show:
The Orton-Sheamus match went more than 20 minutes and was really good. I still think a babyface turn for Sheamus is going to happen in the near future. I also think that if/when he does turn, he will be more over than he ever was as a heel. ...
Orton’s snap powerslam on Sheamus into the ring steps looked quite painful. ...
I’m not sure why Orton was allowed to accept Christian’s challenge for a title match at Capitol Punishment without getting the OK from Smackdown general manager Teddy Long first. Would it have been that hard to just have Long come out and say that he was making the match official? ...
The tag team match in which Daniel Bryan and Sin Cara defeated Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase Jr. was fine, but not quite as good as I thought it would be. It’s nice to see Bryan – who scored the victory for his team by making DiBiase tap out to the LeBell Lock – winning matches on a consistent basis. ...
Wade Barrett walked out on fellow Corre members Justin Gabriel and Heath Slater again – this time during a six-man tag match against Ezekiel Jackson and The Usos – and it looks as if the dysfunctional heel faction is finally done. ...
By the way, when did The Usos become babyfaces? ...
The Divas match that saw A.J. upset Tamina was OK. It was interesting that after going 0-2 as a tag team with Kaitlyn, A.J. won her first singles match. A.J., by the way, definitely has a Mickie James-like spunkiness about her. Whether she has James’ charisma and in-ring ability remains to be seen. ...
Jinder Mahal was put over strong for the second week in a row, as he squashed Trent Barreta. I like what they’re doing with Mahal so far. ...
Last week, Johnny Curtis cut a promo about spilled milk in which he poured milk over his head. This week, he said he had a chip on his shoulder, and then ate a potato chip that had been sitting on his shoulder. I predict that next week he will have a stuffed toy monkey on his back, and he’ll say that he needs to have a match on Smackdown so he can get the monkey off his back. Either that or he’ll have his foot stuck in a door and he’ll say that he’s trying to get his foot in the door in WWE.

I don't know about turning Sheamus face, he seems more like a heel-like persona to me, just like I think Orton should be a heel instead of a face. I think if I had been Vince I would've kept Christian face and turned Orton heel, since everything about Orton screams heel from his slow calculating viper-isms to his vicious look on his face. Personally I'd like to see Henry or The Great Khali with the WHC, but whatever.

Those Johnny Curtis promos reek of ripping off Zack Ryder's youtube show cuts.

Is it me or did Smackdown this week seem very light on real matches? With the Orton / Shemus match, as good as it was, being 20 minutes, and the strange vault replay of the Edge match, there seemed to be not much else going on.
Shemus is a great, urm, "entertainer" but I don't see how he would work as a face. I also don't see any heels on the Smackdown roster for him to feud with who would make a credible opponent. (Wade Barrett perhaps, but why would Shemus be interested in the IC title?)
I hope April Jeanette's "nerd" character isn't going to grate on me as much as Bryan's does. How about they get together? Mixed tag team action, anyone?
I swear if Booker T tells me what "that right there" or "this right now" is once more I'm going to watch every episode of Smackdown on mute until he's gone.

Yeah... as you said, Eck, Christian's opening "I hate my fans" speech and the sin cara/bryan tag match were both only okay... but should have been superb.
And while I'm agreeing with people, I also can't stand listening to Booker T any longer. Love the guy, but he's unbearable on commentary. and, yes to Bob D re: Ryder ripoff.
AJ is adorable (although her new haircolor is weird) but I feel safe saying no matter how good she gets, she will NEVER approach Mickie James in skill or charisma... and never ever in hotness. Rewatch that original Mickie/Trish feud... wwoooooowwww

With the way Sheamus was booked for the match I wouldn't be surprised to see him penciled in for the title match either. I don't see Christian winning the title at Capitol Punishment unless by some sliver of chance Jericho returns to cost Orton the title. With Sheamus in the match it would definitely allow Christian to continue his feud with Orton for another PPV after Capitol Punishment by having Orton pin Sheamus in the match to retain.
What I'm also interested in seeing is Christian's moveset moving forward in his heel turn. His moveset seems more suited for a face superstar and its what allowed him to put on great matches with Orton.
Also, I am liking the way the Intercontinental title is being handled as of recently. Having Barrett and Jackson feud over the title makes it seem less of the little brother of the WHC and more of a prestigious championship.
Lastly....I was thinking Christian needs a quicker finisher than the Killswitch. It was serviceable against mid card talent but it has way too slow a set up for main event matches and I didnt believe for a second Christian was going to hit it when he ran in during Orton's match.

Hey Kev,
The Usos turned face last week on WWE Superstars in a tag team match against Justin Gabriel and Heath Slater.
Also, JTG has turned heel.
Do you still watch WWE Superstars?
RESPONSE FROM KE: No.

pretty sure johhny cutis is stealing zack ryders material...

when did the Usos turn face; the same time Tamina turned heel. You need a scorecard to keep track of the changing players. same with DiBiase. I guess it's a week to week thing.
RESPONSE FROM KE: Don't forget Rosa Mendes.

Unlike some other commenters above, I very much agree with Kevin that Sheamus would make a good face. Despite the fact that he plays a heel, I think there's a certain organic likeability about him that comes out, and I think he'd actually make a more natural face than heel. Not sure if I'm as confident as Kevin that he's headed in that direction though - I didn't really see the seeds for that this week, other than wanting a match with Christian.
And Khali or Henry with the title would be abysmal, obviously.

The only commentator i really appreciate these days, are Booker T.
I never ever liked Jim Ross or The King.
Booker T got the Wrestlingvoice of the decade. Raspy and thick.
All the other ones, sounds like girls, or atleast very feminine.

Stevi it's not his voice I object to, it's the stupid things he says. If you like how he sounds so much, get him to record your GPS for you...
"Right about now you' gonna wanna turn right here, right there."

Totally agree about Sheamus, if he turns face and just becomes a wrecking machine he could get over big, similar to Taz in his original ECW days perhaps.
I also think he would benefit from tweaking his look a little, I find it hard to take him serious with that preposterous hairdo.

I knew Creative would botch turning Christian heel. Nothing in the last few months has suggested that the fans were he problem. Orton, yes. Teddy long, yes. Management, yes. The fans have been behind him all the way. But it's not about wrestling, so instead of having him turn in a direction that makes sense, we'll blame the fans. Plus, this way he gets boos instead of the fans having minds of their own and cheering him, thus ruining our heel turn. It's writing like that that keeps TNA in business.
I agree that Sheamus could be a good face, but I'm afraid they'll turn him into a walking stereotype for laughs. A main-event level face can be funny, but there's a thin line between funny and joke.

The only thing I don't like about Christian's heel turn is that it's been telegraphed so much that it was totally predictable - was only a matter of WHEN, not if. Story-wise, it would have been more interesting if Sheamus and Orton did a double-turn with Christian's character staying where it is. But then I also realize that at this point, WWE wouldn't want to turn Orton heel. Well, also, I might just be a swerve junkie.
But otherwise, I like the attention Christian is finally getting. Hopefully, he'll stay at the top of the Smackdown card for a while. And besides, Edge proved that even when you can't get much traction as a face, a heel turn will give you the final push to the top.
I can see the logic in Orton being the Champion, but still, with the top talent being so thin on Smackdown, the title could help other people more. As things stand, it doesn't do anything to elevate Orton, but it might be a good idea to have Christian or Sheamus have a moderately long run with it.
And as Carreg said, this week's show seemed to be very short...I wonder if they had to cut a match out.

The fascinating thing with Christian's character is revealing his motivation down the line (when he presumably wins the belt at some point). If he uses the short "five day reign" as a reason to hate on all forms of what the fans like (Orton), it could work well. He knows he can beat Orton, but maybe he "figures out" that he has to take shortcuts to get it done. Look at how Edge did it as he became The Master Manipulator to rip out all those title wins. The comparisons to Edge and going down as an all-time great individually could actually motivate Christian in real life; you could use 'em in a story line and they'd work.
How good is Randy Orton? He is helping make Sheamus look great in the ring, though Sheamus has the goods in the ring. I can believe in Sheamus being a main eventer now, especially as a tough-as-nails good guy. Smackdown has been phenomenal since Orton grabbed the title from Christian; very entertaining in-ring action and really good storytelling revolving around the WHC title.

They need to let Christian run with his heel role like he did in TNA. Unfortunately, I see wwe putting a lot of restraints on the guy as to what he can and cannot say... even though he could probably make the top promos in the company (next to CM Punk)

@G: Considering his body type & complexion, what hair style would you suggest?!?!? I think the DragonBall Z look suits him just fine...

The only problem with turning Sheamus face is that they may be tempted to pair Hornswoggle with him.
