Randy Orton suffered legitimate concussion; status for WWE’s Capitol Punishment in question
Apparently, it wasn’t just a story line on Raw Monday night when it was announced that world heavyweight champion Randy Orton was not cleared to wrestle due to suffering a concussion.
Orton, who worked a triple threat match Sunday in Madrid, Spain, said on Twitter Tuesday that he did not wrestle Monday because he “was knocked out in Spain. U can’t wrestle, or should I say, perform, the day after a concussion.”
Citing WWE sources, pwinsider.com reported that the company’s doctors will determine on Sunday whether Orton is healthy enough to go through with his scheduled match against Christian at the Capitol Punishment pay-per-view at Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. Orton also is scheduled to work house shows Friday and Saturday.

Comments
WWE assumes this risk by running so many house shows. A world title match on a pay-per-view is now in jeopardy due to an injury suffered at an event which WWE wouldn't have even acknowledged on television. An excessive number of house shows isn't good for the performers' health, and apparently, it isn't always good for booking plans, either.

Hopefully he will be in good shape on Sunday. Perhaps this will let WWE know that the schedule is a little too tough..

I feel very bad for orton,we all love him and lets hope he gets well soon and there is nothing too serious.I really hope that there is nothing serious, coz ever since the chris benoit incident.........I have really started fearing the term conccussion.I know i am talking rubbish but really i do hope that no one bids adieu his life like benoit did.
people seem to just forget all his in ring achievements and judge him by the acts he committed in an unstable state of mind.
it really feels bad ........................
RIP benoit!!

I find it absolutely ridiculous that people are complaining about WWE's schedule. Concussions can happen even if they worked 1 day a week. The talent needs to work to gain experience and improve their skills. They only work 4 days a week anyways. The schedule is better than it's ever been, and I fear that if they curtailed it anymore, the talent depth would be even worse. WWE's doing the right thing by keeping him off house shows for the time being to let him recover.
The fact that anyone as looking at this situation as anything other than an accident is absurd.

WWE first and foremost needs to consider Randy's health and if he is not healthy enough to wrestle then don't let him do it, like WWE did with Stone Cold's neck injury. What they could do if Randy can't go is vacate the title, book Christian to win it, and actually give Christian a decent reign as World Heavyweight Champion. They could also use this to turn Sheamus face, as I agree with Kevin that he would go over much better as an anti-hero face.

And now we all jump on WWE.
Come on and take it easy, S*** HAPPENS. Was it ECW's fault Sabu got his neck broken? No. Is it WWE's fault Edge's career ended not to long ago? No.
When ever you do physical work, be it performing in theater, or playing a sport (which WWE mixes together for it's product), there is a chance for injury. Orton probably chosen not to go to Madrid, but would that prevent a concussion? No. He could very well of received one on a tv show or a ppv.
-And to Rishi, thank you for showing smarts towards the Benoit incident. It was tragic, but let's face it. His brain was slowly becoming mush and that isn't good. It just tragic that his Wife and Kid happened to be around, but it very well of could of been someone else. What if he snapped during the PPV that he was part of that weekend? He was due to fight Punk for the ECW Championship, and could of hurt Punk, one of the crew, or a fan.

@rishi-
The medical examiner in the Benoit case said that the cause of his mood swings and ultimately his meltdown was chronic traumatic encephelopathy. CTE is caused by repeated minor trauma to the front part of the head, distinct from occasional major trauma typical of a concussion. CTE is associated with damage to the brain's frontal lobe, which is responsible for mood modulation- essentially self-control.
I don't mean to say that concussions are a good thing, or even to diminish their seriousness at all. But Benoit's situation was different, almost like the difference between arthritis and a broken bone.

To me this is something the WWE can use in thier story line. Strip Orton of the title, give it to Christian on the PPV and have him defend against someone and have him hurt him bad. Then begin building a match at the next PPV of Christan vs Orton.

@ rishi, Puck, and Andrew
Tony Dungy has an adopted son with "congenital insensitivity to pain," essentially the inability to feel pain.
I can't help but wonder if Chris Benoit may have suffered from something like that -- other wrestlers, as well, say Mick Foley.
Regardless, Benoit's is a cautionary tale, and as such should he shouted, not whispered. Vince's "banishment" of him now seems a knee-jerk reaction made in embarrassment following RAW that fateful night 4 years ago. But Vince is nothing if not stubborn, huh?

From everything that we have been learning about concussions over the past few years from football and hockey I think it would be best if WWE did not have Orton wrestle on Sunday.
He would be putting himself at a higher risk for some serious health problems down the road for one match that few would remember down the road.
Stripping Orton of the title and giving it to Christian would be a good way to build their program and, if WWE plays it right, put way more heat on Christian.
That said, the WWE will probably have Orton wrestle (er, entertain) and win.

boomerang,puck and andrew...
I agree with all of you,the benoit incident was even though not the wwe's fault, they could have avoided it by taking some precautionary methods.where was the talent wellness programm then??I believe they check the superstars for any physical ailments then how could all the conccussions go unnoticed?
anyways, all said and done,WWE shouldn't have treated benoit like they did.Come on give the dead man some credit for all that he did in the ring. Wake up Vince!! we all love benoit.....
Posted by: rishi | June 17, 2011 2:43 AM
they dont give him credit for what he did and talk about him because he murdered his wife and kids that is why and there is no excuse for that
i hope to never hear benoit's name again he is scum and should burn forever
and dont say "we" all love benoit his wrestling career is null and void for his heinous act he is scum

@ Everybody? Anybody?
There's no excuse for Benoit's crime (or sin, if you prefer), and I don't think anyone's suggesting we erect a statue, or even put out a greatest hits album, I mean DVD.
But nothing happens in a vacuum, and this was a man who achieved, in spite of some limitations (size, charisma) that have proven to be insurmountable for many, remarkable success and status.
Now, despite "Benoit" being on the WWE verboten list (along with belt, wrestling, and whatever else), hasn't a lot of the violence been sanitized out of Vince's very ring since Chris lost his mind completely? In that way, they certainly seem to heve acknowledged what happened -- the loosening up of the ring work these last few months notwithstanding.
With all the attention so rightfully being paid to head injuries in all "sports" these days, it seems not only silly but counter-productive to pretend there never was a Chris Benoit.
Just sayin'.

Josh - shut it.
yes, he did kill his son and his wife, but we will NEVER know the TRUTH of what happened. Yes it is horrible, but one does not make him Satan. people put way to much focus on the end instead of his life. We was good person, a great worker, good to the fans, and LOVED HIS FAMILY!!! When your brain is mushed and scrambled like his was, you don't always have much control. We don't know what set him off. But we do know that in the end he hung himself.
I will not condemn the man until I get a time machine and go back in time and watch it happen before my very eyes.
Until then, I wish for all 3 of them to Rest In Peace.

How did this become about Chris Benoit?
Posted by: Julian | June 18, 2011 3:44 AM
Murdering your own family trumps any and all other accomplishments you did in your life. WWE didn't tarnish Benoit's legacy, Benoit did.
Posted by: loco | June 18, 2011 11:32 AM
Here here, Puck, well said. RIP Benoit

I hope Benoit is burning in a lake of fire. He's a piece of garbage. To everyone saying not to judge him on the end of his life, tell me how many other people with CTE have killed their families? Many people have or have had CTE, and they haven't killed anyone, except maybe themselves. It makes me sick when people talk about celebrating his career. When you do what he did, no part of your life should be celebrated.

If Benoit had survived - I don't think that he would have been judged guilty. He was brain damaged at that time - and the kind of brain damage he had makes changes people's character completely. They start seeing and hearing things and fall into a kind of paranoia. He died, so we will never know a 100% what happend. But due to what was discovered after his death, that his brain was definitely damaged, we can be quite sure that he was no longer responsable of his acts. So: no celebration for Benoit, but at least mentioning and showing his fights, in the vintage collections for example. A quieter way of saying: before the damage and the drama, he was an outstanding wrestler and a good friend. The WWE is partly responsable: with more care for their wrestlers (it's better these days, not at that time) maybe the tragedy could have been prevented.

We remember all Presidents, we remember Hitler, we remember Christopher Columbus, we remember a lot of things, we remember a lot of murders and the people how committed them. Human history is drenched in sin, and will continue to be. We can't pic and choose them. A man got away with killing someone by blaming the twinkies he had been eating.
If you want Benoit to burn, then burn Columbus. Burn all leaders in history. Burn every soldier. Burn everyone who has taken a life. And then slowly you start to see how pointless it is.
When someone snaps, they all snap differently. Sometimes they just go straight to killing themselves, sometimes they take a couple people with them, sometimes they just make a mess and mope in a corner.
