WWE Smackdown: Christian’s frustration continues to mount
Christian appeared to move one step closer to a heel turn during Friday night’s episode of Smackdown.
He interrupted a promo by world heavyweight champion Randy Orton in the opening segment, and after congratulating Orton on his victory at last Sunday’s Over the Limit pay-per-view, Christian said that he knows he can beat Orton and wants one more title shot.
Before Orton could respond, Sheamus and Mark Henry came out separately to throw their hats in the ring for a title shot. Both guys said that Christian already had his chance and doesn’t deserve any more.
Smackdown general manager Teddy Long then announced that there would be a triple threat match between Christian, Sheamus and Henry in the main event to determine who gets a shot at Orton’s title on next week’s show.
In a well-worked and well-booked match, Sheamus emerged victorious, thanks in part to an unintentional assist from Orton that cost Christian the match.
After Christian hit a spear on Sheamus and had him pinned, Orton – who was watching the match at ringside and had just been shoved down by Henry – entered the ring and delivered an RKO to Henry. The referee was distracted for several seconds by Orton’s interference in the match, and by the time he got down to make the count, Sheamus had recovered enough to kick out at two.
After jawing briefly with the ref, Christian turned around and walked right into a Brogue Kick from Sheamus, who covered him for the win.
It will be interesting to see what role Christian plays in next week’s Orton-Sheamus match.
Other thoughts on Friday’s show:
Christian, Sheamus and Henry all did well on the mic both in the opening segment and in backstage interviews. One would expect Christian and Sheamus to be good, but I was surprised at how effective Henry was. I liked his bit about not having to stand in lines when you’re the World’s Strongest Man. ...
I also liked Christian’s humorous promo about overcoming adversity his entire life. ...
Daniel Bryan and Cody Rhodes had a very good match, and Bryan winning was a pleasant surprise. The finishing sequence saw Bryan counter Cross Rhodes with the LeBell Lock. Rhodes tapped out before the hold was even fully applied, which was a great chicken heel move. Rhodes got his heat back after the match by attacking Bryan. ...
The Kane-Great Khali match was bad but at least it was short. After Kane scored the victory, Jinder Mahal came out and yelled at Khali and slapped him in the face again. Ranjin Singh and Mahal started arguing, and Khali then attacked Singh. I’m not a big fan of Khali getting a push at this point, but Mahal is a compelling character. He has a great heel facial expression and shows good intensity. ...
Booker T. remarked that Khali is even slower than The Big Show. He’s absolutely right, but why draw attention to it? Khali was moving so slowly against Kane that Scott Hall’s Discus Punch at a Massachusetts indy show last month looked lightning-like by comparison. ...
It looked as if Sin Cara attempted to do the same finishing move on Chavo Guerrero that he and Guerrero botched last Sunday, and while this one was better, it still wasn’t smooth. I believe Cara was going for his La Mistica finisher. I thought Cara and Guerrero would really click together in the ring but that sure hasn’t been the case. ...
Michael Cole had a great line after Booker said that he spoke to Cara through a translator. “Did they need a translator for you as well?” he asked. ...
Speaking of Booker and Cole, their in-ring segment was pretty pointless. ...
I do have to give Booker props for getting in a One Man Gang and Devastation Inc. reference. ...
The Ezekiel Jackson-Heath Slater match served its purpose, which was to get Jackson over as a powerhouse. After manhandling Slater, Jackson then fought off The Corre’s three-on-one attack. ...
It was nice to see A.J. on Smackdown, as she teamed with fellow NXT Season 3 competitor Kaitlyn in a loss to Alicia Fox and Tamina. Kaitlyn looked pretty tentative in the ring. ...
I was surprised to see Tamina teaming with Fox. When did Tamina turn heel?

I thought the Daniel Bryan - Cody Rhodes match was better than all the matches in Over the Limit, except for the Christian - Randy Orton match.
In contrast, Sin Cara had some nice spots, but the match itself didn't seem that smooth...and most, if not all, of Sin Cara's spots still looks very weak on TV.
And I liked how the championship is a Really Big Deal in Smackdown, with multiple wrestlers going at it for a shot. I think with how the finish went on this week's Smackdown, Christian isn't finished yet in the title hunt. Maybe a triple threat, with Sheamus in Capitol Punishment?

Christian is only good on his non title or contentor matches, but lacks the intensity and the zeal that his friend Edge had, you know the agressiveness the feeling that the title belongs, but taking anything from though he averagely a good wrestler but that is not enough

During the main event I couldn't help thinking, "What's an Irishman doing trying to win a match with Putski's Polish Hammer," and, Begorrah, we get a Brogue Kick. You know, with those tree-trunk legs of his, Sheamus'd give a whole new meaning to "stompin' a mudhole" if he ever really connects.
Booker T. to TNA:
I'll see your Fingerpoke and raise you some World-Class. Wrestling Matters here too, sucka...we just can't say the word.
Tamina was sporting a pretty ugly bruise (or some kind of protrusion) on her ribs -- and she never tagged into the match. Did Vince hire an Irish diva?

Sin Cara was no doubt going for La Mistica, but he ended up under the ropes, so he couldn't have applied the submission part of it. I like that they're making him a big deal, but I'd love to see him work a match with someone he has more comfort with. He is so innovative, but he hasn't had a chance to shine. Just once, I'd love to see him and Del Rio have 10-15 minutes in a WWE ring.

please move Santino to smackdown & into proper singles competition.
anyone please!
cody rhodes' promos are always fast forward material
and am i the only one who misses the fun mid-card programs for the intercontinental and US titles. what's going on there?
(the same can apply for the tag and divas titles)

I had forgotten that Tamina was still on the roster. That's one more diva who, with nine months to strength train and otherwise improve, will hopefully be able to keep up with Big Momma when she returns.
Mark Henry has always struck me as being literate and well-spoken. He is starting to get up there in age though. I hope he gets a title run soon before he has to retire. Anyone who doesn't believe that Mark Henry deserves a title run should talk to the hand.
RESPONSE FROM KE: I've interviewed Henry a few times over the years and he is well-spoken. I've just never seen him cut very compelling promos. Perhaps he just never had good material to work with.

Sin Cara has been pretty disappointing so far. Usually, you hear claims from the smarks that it is because the WWE has made someone wrestle "their style," but they've been giving him plenty of TV time with little to show for it. He's looking more like Chavo v2.0 than Rey Mysterio Jr.

Wait, Sheamus and Orton are facing next week? I thought they were facing at Capitol Punishment

I'm over Christian. And wish the WWE would just move on to the Sheamus - Randy Orton program, cleanly.
The Instant Classic has been No Sold so much that his continued involvement in anything above a Diva's Battle Royal is not believable at this point.
He really is a Creepy Little Bastard.
They should have Alberto Del Rio come out and injure him again or better yet have that Ricardo Rodriguez guy run him over in a back stage segment.

I wonder where wwe will be taking Sin Cara. Possibly the Chavo feud could be leading to Chavo becoming Sin Caras maneger, as it is common knowledge the Cara can barly speak English. It is also reported that Wwe have sighned another Mexican lucha libre star 'Averno' to work with Cara.....
Does anyone else think Booker T looks like one of Milli Vanilli with those glasses?

I was really thrilled to see Kaitlyn- she's so gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was wondering if she was even still on the roster, but she's one of the best looking divas on the roster, along with Beth Phoenix and Kelly Kelly. The Bella twins are also very attractive. Anyways, I thought they should've had Mark Henry win instead of Sheamus, he is the strongest man in the world and he's actually very underrated. Good in-ring performer and pretty good mic skills, if they gave him a real chance he could be the most compelling heel on Smackdown. I'd also like to see The Great Khali in the main event as well, he's one of the better performers on Smackdown.

I appreciate the fact that there may very well be a heel turn for Christian--kudos on your acumen-(you are of course, a wrestling journalist--and a good one)---but in the meantime----the original point of the discussion has been obscured. To wit:
1.) Christian has now been beaten cleanly by Orton.
2.) Christian has not been booked as particularly strong in needing Orton's help at times in the first place.
3.) Strange events like Orton's babyface celebrations may reference the fact that oft times WWE will change certain things on the fly---and I would think that the initial fan outrage over the short title reign may have precipitated some of the action we see now.
4.) At this point, whether Christian turns heel or not---the legitimacy that he had for two short days and that the fans rose up to complain about being stripped from him is even moreso stripped from him at this point. The comment from Evan Benz above illustrates this---although Benz is apparently fine with it.
Anyway, Mr. Eck, this is the last I'll add on it---but being right about his turning heel is not exactly answering the question raised about the quality of the decision to defy the wishes of the fans and go about business as usual--and I think you would have a hard time defending any notion that the move the way it is being played out is going to result in Christian ever attaining the kind of main event status that many folks felt he deserved---and THAT I believe, is originally what all of the hubbub was over. Wasn't it? Wasn't that the original point? Has Christian somehow NOT been de-legitimized against the wishes of a great number of fans? If he hasn't, please explicate.
WWE fans have short memories--so we can't expect anymore than to have an eventual general concensus that they are tired of Christian and "well...he wasn't good enough". As you and more critical observers know--the perception of being good enough or not has to do with booking and writing. Christian as a wrestler certainly has always had the talent if given a chance to run. Certainly, more hardcore wrestling fans have always appreciated that talent as well. That's how the debate started. At several points in the past, you yourself lamented his not being given a strong main event run.
In closing---you have been harsh on TNA---and I agree with you. Unjust things that affect quality for the fans and ridiculous creative decisions should be brought up by a proper wrestling journalist, and you do so very sharply and intelligently. Yet---we don't often see you turn that critical eye on WWE. When you do, it is in a context of just nitpicking a few minor problems from a company that you implicitly reference, whether you mean to or not, as a beneficient juggernaut that just needs to work out the kinks--as opposed to TNA which is doomed because it is a train wreck.
I think you know that WWE's tracks aren't exactly being laid any more solidly. WWE should receive the same treatment as TNA. Both companies are at fault for things that are decreasing wrestling quality overall---and both deserve a quality journalist like yourself to exposit those problems. TNA got their own highly critical "Ring Posts X-Tra" video tearing down the facade that they have put up over the fact that they are not providing very good entertainment. Why is it that we don't hear about what is behind WWE's facade? Are we not supposed to ask about the man behind the curtain? He is there, Mr. Eck, and if people keep pretending he doesn't exist, and that TNA's problems aren't in many ways parallels of WWE's, (and why not--Bischoff does his best to impersonate McMahon)---wrestling is in trouble. I know in my arena of professional writing that many problems are stemming nowadays from people just not talking about the fact that some things are so truly getting f'd up, that the demise of those things is imminent just by the fact that grievous malfunctions and bleeding wounds are being ignored. I don't know---up to you. As always, I respect your writing, you acumen, and your bravery to allow all commenters to say what they want to even if it is soemthing that you don't agree with---(or even the ignorant idiots that insult you--some of those are hard to read--but you show a lot of moxy to put them up anyway). It makes you very unique within the field.
