WWE Raw: The Miz has a plan to make John Cena quit
When it was announced on last week’s Raw that John Cena’s WWE title defense against The Miz at the Over the Limit pay-per-view on Sunday would be an I Quit match, my first thought was that it was going to be a tough sell to convince people that Miz has any chance of winning.
On Raw Monday night, WWE tried hard to make the impossible seem possible, although I suppose the buy rate will be the ultimate judge of whether or not the effort was successful.
The Miz cut a promo at the end of the show in which he guaranteed victory, claiming that he had come up with a way of winning the match that no one had ever thought of.
His delivery was great and Cena sold concern with his facial expression. The Miz went on to grab a pipe from under the ring, and he and Alex Riley attacked Cena.
Up to that point, WWE had done everything right to make Miz seem like a legitimate threat to beat Cena for the title on Sunday, including airing a video package earlier in the program that showed Miz destroying Cena.
But instead of the show going off the air with Miz and Riley standing over the fallen WWE champion, Cena overcame the two (plus a pipe)-on-one attack and got the better of the physical exchange. Can’t say I understand the thinking on that one.
Other thoughts on Monday’s show:
There are some who believe that WWE will recreate the famous finish for the I Quit match between The Rock and Mankind from the 1999 Royal Rumble (Rock got the win when a recording of Mankind saying “I quit” was played over the sound system) on Sunday, but if that happens, it would not fit Miz’s description of being something that had never been done before. ...
It was an interesting night for Jack Swagger. During the contract signing for Sunday’s Jerry Lawler-Michael Cole match, Cole made a remark that offended Swagger, and Swagger walked out on him and told him that he was on his own at Over the Limit. It seemed like another tease for a Swagger babyface turn, but then at the end of the show, Swagger was hand-picked by The Miz to face Cena in a No Holds Barred Match. Swagger attacked Cena from behind on the entrance ramp prior to the match and dominated the contest before ultimately tapping out to the STF. I’m not sure where WWE is going with Swagger, but it seems like a good sign for him that he not only worked a main event with Cena, but he was given a lot of offense against the champ. ...
It was a good night for CM Punk and The Nexus. Punk defeated U.S. champion Kofi Kingston in a non-title match, and Michael McGillicutty and David Otunga upset WWE tag team champions The Big Show and Kane (thanks to interference by Punk) in another non-title bout. In an odd twist, instead of Punk and the team of McGillicutty and Otunga getting championship matches for the U.S. and tag titles, respectively, it was announced that Punk and Mason Ryan will challenge Kane and The Big Show for the tag belts at Over the Limit. ...
The contract signing segment with Cole and Lawler was well done. It was great how Cole -- who made Sunday's bout with Lawler a Kiss My Foot match -- went from cocky and obnoxious to apologetic as soon as Swagger left him. ...
Rey Mysterio and Alberto Del Rio work well together so it’s no surprise that they had a good match (Mysterio won by disqualification when Ricardo Rodriguez got involved). R-Truth got significant heat for his post-match beat-down of Mysterio. ...
The Kharma-Kelly Kelly stuff is compelling. Once again, Kelly Kelly was spared when Kharma came out to attack someone (Nikki Bella was the victim this week). Kharma cornered Kelly Kelly and glared menacingly at her, but all Kharma did was flick her in the forehead. ...
The way Kelly Kelly used her legs to roll up WWE Divas champion Brie Bella for the winning pinfall in the non-title match was pretty awkward and it looked like she was going in slow motion. It wasn’t believable that Bella could be pinned that easily. ...
Riley was very good on them mic in the opening segment with Cena, but Cena’s comeback – which included references to Hello Kitty and The Jonas Brothers – was lame. ...
Zack Ryder had a cameo with Cena for the second week in a row. This time, Ryder handed Cena one of his T-shirts as Cena was making his way to the ring for the main event. It looks as if the grassroots campaign to get Ryder some TV time is paying off.

Comments
I can't help but to wonder if the random appearances with Zack Ryder is to maybe set up an appearance at OTL. Think about it: Alex Riley will most likely get involved in the match because he's The Miz's butt-kisser, so it will probably be like a 2-on-1 handicap match, they almost make Cena quit, then Ryder comes in and attacks them both, Cena recovers and makes The Miz tap out to the STF. That would certainly be a cool twist, and I'm kinda curious what all the Cena haters/Ryder fans would think. I'm a huge Cena fan and it would be a crying shame for him to lose to the Miz because he's a lot more talented than him.

How is the "grassroot campaign" paying off only by Ryder giving Cena a T-shirt?
RESPONSE FROM KE: At least he's on Raw. That's a start.

Much like Undertaker v Triple H, just because it's happened before doesn't mean it's happened before.

I am one of the ones who thought, and still think, Miz is going to use a recording of Cena. Especially since the last two words Cena said was "I Quit". But you have a point where Miz did say it's something that was never done.
I'm enjoying Kharma destroying the diva's each week, but I'm now ready for her to have some actual matches.

Hey Kev this is kind off base from the currant article but do you ever watch AWA on ESPN Classic that takes back to when the stars you see today start out guys like HBK , Jeff Jarrett , Ric Flair and Scott Hall also managers like Diamond Dallas Page and Paul E. Dangerously do you watch the program .
RESPONSE FROM KE: I watched all those shows back in the day, but I've seen very few of the reruns.

I hope the Miz does destroy Cena at Over the Limit, alas given the predictability of WWE as of late I would say it is highly unlikely (but a girl can still hope…). It would be interesting to see Miz become the fan favorite and turn Cena heel, but I am not yet convinced it would be as fun…I was amazed that Cole could be more annoying!! I even prefer trash-talking Cole to ass-kissing Cole, though if Lawler had something to say besides “shut up” that might help. I think the Mysterio-Del Rio conflict makes sense of why RAW would draft away a talent like Sin Cara right away. I love Kharma, but I wish they would let her do more than just slammadiva every week, it is getting dry. P.S. Kevin, your blog is amazing!

It would be great if TNA got their crap together finally, because Raw has been an absolute bore since Mania.
I rolled my eyes when Cena turned the tables after getting attacked with the pipe. Still not nearly as bad as the time he wrestled 6 days after a "ruptured spleen" a few years back. Just for reference, most athletes in less physical REAL sports would miss at least a full season of games recovering from a ruptured spleen.
The Kharma stuff is the most interesting storyline in the Diva realm since Trish was feuding with Lita, but you just know since she made her name in the Indie scene & TNA she'll probably win the title, then lose to Kelly Kelly and become the female Khali from then out.

Come on WWE, push Zack Ryder! Woo woo woo, you know it!
Posted by: Andy | May 17, 2011 9:05 PM
Makes me feel like Miz is going to get a family member of Cena involved or something. Have Riley hold them hostage, forcing Cena to say I quit.
Posted by: Sam | May 17, 2011 9:17 PM
Rey Mysterio - Del Rio was the best piece of t.v i've seen in a long time, even though the feud has been done on Smackdown it just felt bigger on Raw. The way Del Rio turned the croud (half cheering for him) too all boo's on a dime made it the most entertaining segment of the night. And Yeah Zack Ryder! Sheesh just put him on t.v already!
Posted by: 46degreesouth | May 17, 2011 9:27 PM
How could Miz make Cena say "I quit"? It could be done quite easily by threatening to do harm to some innocent person or someone Cena cares about. Just take a hostage and get the win. Added bonus: massive heel heat for The Miz.

Zack Ryder has a lot of support from guys like Cena and Punk. It's great to see him making something of himself.
Don't know if you noticed but the guys he was with when he gave Cena the shirt were watching Z! True Long Island Story.
Also what's your take on the apparent reunion of Hawkins and Ryder?
Posted by: Leon | May 17, 2011 10:11 PM
If karma hurts kelly kelly im gonna cry. But miz and cena will be a great match. The best part is this match is gonna be like undertaker and triple h only 3x longer cause neither will say i quit. And wwe knows that. So the match is like impossiblw to script because of the length. So this match basically isnt scripted!

Superman Cena bores the tears out of me.
Takes two pipe huts and gets up-
to quote Mean Gene give me a break.

a note worthy development for ZACK RYDER
it happened on the last WWE Superstars
Hawkins came out to help Ryder defeat vlademir koslof. and then they celebreated the win up the ramp together. it looked like the start of reforming that tag team.
but i dont know...
what does the WWE plan to do with "the ball with zack ryder on it"

A few have already mentioned it here, but I think that The Miz will somehow restrain Cena (handcuffs methinks) and then threaten to hurt someone if Cena doesn't say 'I Quit' (maybe a kid in a Cena shirt?) . The heat this will generate for The Miz would be astronomical.
Posted by: loco | May 18, 2011 12:23 AM
Argh. This is so boring. The only fresh thing on Raw is R-Truth's new heel character. Lowest rating for Raw since January. Placing the belt back on Cena was such a poor decision.

Why don't the miz face john cena

Whatever happened to Husky Harris?
RESPONSE FROM KE: He's back in FCW (developmental).

I think there´s an easy way to make someone win an i quit match against cena: make his opponent threat someone from the audience, someone from cena´s family.
has that ever been done before??
Posted by: yauza | May 18, 2011 9:38 AM
Maybe Kharma should detroy Gail Kim...

Kevin -
Regarding the old ESPN AWA telecasts, do you have any idea who owns the rights to those re-broadcasts? I thought Vince purchased the AWA catalog of footage or does ESPN hold the rights since they originally aired the show? Thanks.
RESPONSE FROM KE: That's a great question. Unfortunately, I don't know the answer.

Why does everyone want to see the Miz beat John Cena? The Miz isn't even all that talented. His mic skills are OK and he's not a very good wrestler, Cena is much better on the mic and in the ring. The Miz, must see champion????? hahahahaha he's one of the most boring champions ever, all he ever does is talk about his supposed "awesomeness". As for turning him face? Again, horrible idea, about as bad as the idea of turning Cena heel. I'd rather see John Cena feud with Mark Henry, at least Henry is a better wrestler and can generate great heat without being extremely annoying. I swear Miz is more annoying than Michael Cole. Besides, Henry turned heel by turning on Cena during a tag-team match so they should've left him on Raw to feud with Cena for the belt.

The people who have said that the Miz will restrain Cena and threaten to hurt someone close to him for him to say I Quit I think ya'll have it right. Switch a family member or a kid Cena fan with either his wife or a woman acting as his wife.

A couple thoughts on the Miz/Cena match:
1. If you get to pick the opponent and stip, why not just do a No Holds Barred, Loser is Fired Forever, Doesn't Get to Do Run Ins Until They Are "Rehired" match where you get a group to help wail on him and pin him as a group? I mean, aside from that match, Jack Swagger is really sticking it to Cena. Such a stupid concept.
2. All I can think is that Cena's recovery was to throw a wrench in the whole "whoever goes over on TV does the job on PPV" formula. I don't think the voice over would fly and didn't they already do a match where someone quit to save someone else too? It's about as predictable as the other title match where one man has a movie coming out the same week of the PPV and one is Christian.

Threatening someone has been done before too though (Melina/Foley/Flair).

Just watched Monday's Raw followed immediately by last Thursday's Impact. The Kelly/Brie pinfall narrowly edges Anarchia's battle-royal elimination for 'worst spot of the week'. Did you catch 'Chia being put over the top rope by Morgan only to end up sitting on the apron.....and then just jump down to the floor?
Also, it struck me that R-Truth and Mr Anderson seem to be playing very, very similar characters, but one is a full-blown heel and the other a babyface/tweener. What gives?
Posted by: Starbjuk | May 18, 2011 4:38 PM
Raw gave absolutely zero incentive to purchase the pay per view. I figured the beatdown with the pipe would lead to a Cena "injury," and Miz would work on it during the PPV. But nope...
TNA isn't great, but I don't understand anyone who wishes it ill will. Vince's best eras have been when he has faced strong competition (80's, WCW, even ECW). They need somebody to make them step up their game...

I was pleasantly surprised at Alex Riley...he did a pretty decent job on the mic. Like any other sycophants to main event stars, I'm sure he will get buried as soon as his time with the Miz is over, but at least now we know that he has the talent to become a player further down the road, whether it's with WWE or TNA.

"Regarding the old ESPN AWA telecasts, do you have any idea who owns the rights to those re-broadcasts? I thought Vince purchased the AWA catalog of footage or does ESPN hold the rights since they originally aired the show? Thanks."
WWE owns the AWA footage,. but ESPN is allowed to re-air any programs that ever aired on their networks.

Regarding Kharma: My hope is they scrip her to beat all the divas until she gets to Gail Kim. Kim has been doing nothing for awhile now, so no one would expect her to do what others could not. Then, have Kim and Kharma do that thing they did in TNA back in the day when they demonstarted how ladies can wrestle! Knowing Vince, I'd guess Beth Phoenix will get the nod. If Kelly Kelly becomes a female Super Cena, I...well, I just don't have words for that kind of nonsense.
As for Cena saying I Quit, maybe Miz will let Cena beat on him for a really long time, but Miz doesn't give up. He stays silent. The match keeps going and going, and a frustrated Cena finally yells in exasperation, "Say it, Miz! Just say it already! Say 'I...Quit...' Say it!" and voila, Miz tricks Cena into saying "I quit" first. I do not know that this has been done before.

I noticed that some have said that The Miz will force Cena to say "I Quit" by holding a relative hostage.
It's possible although I remember an "I Quit" match between The Rock and Triple H in which Triple H said "I Quit" when members of The Corporation ganged up on Chyna.
Or just maybe, The Miz does legitimately get Cena to say "I quit" and then continues to beat him until Zac Ryder comes out and makes the save.

Is it just me or is the PG WWE so unbelieveable. Two pipe shots and he is ok enough to fight off two guys. Ok. Great. Someone at Titan Towers LOVES Cena. Yet, I remember when the NWO hit Stone Cold with a wrench he was down for good. Hmmmmm.....maybe it was a Nerf Pipe.

Since John Cena promised The Rock that their match at Wrestle Mania would be for the belt, I can't see Cena losing the belt any time soon and if he does, he's going to get it back before Wrestle Mania.
I agree that it was stupid to have Cena come back after a couple of pipe shots to overcome a 2 on 1 handicap. I know Cena is supposed to be tough, and I know he is supposed to never give up and all that...but come on.
As for the Kharma thing, I think that is setting up a a program with Beth Pheonix. Seems to make too much sense for that not to happen. With as indestructible as they are making Kharma appear, it wouldn't be too believable to have her get beaten by the girly girls she is now destroying.
