Report: Randy 'Macho Man' Savage dies in car accident

Legendary former WWF and WCW world champion Randy "Macho Man" Savage died from injuries he suffered in a car accident this morning, according to Reuters.
He was 58.
Citing the Florida Highway Patrol, the report said that Savage (real name Randy Poffo) -- one of pro wrestling's biggest stars in the '80s and '90's -- collided head-on with a tree when he veered across a concrete median. He was transported to Largo Medical Center, where he died.
Savage's wife, Lynn, was a passenger in the car and suffered "minor injuries." Police told TMZ that alcohol was not a factor.
I will post my thoughts on Savage later.

R.I.P. Randy. You will be missed... Who knows what the future had in store for Mr. Poffo. Just when it looked like he & Vince were patching things up.... A sad day for WRESTLING fans.

The word Legend or Icon does not do The Macho Man Randy Savage justice. He was and always will be at the top of anyone's greatest list. As far as im concerned he is a real Hall of Famer.Thank you Randy for giving us some of the greatest moments this sport/business has ever and will ever see. RIP Macho Man .. you will always be one of the top stars of all times - wish you could have received your proper due while you are still with us.

I don't follow wrestling anymmore, gave it up years ago, but I was into it during my college years in the early 80's. Who can forget "Macho Man" and his manager, the Lovely Elizabeth? I believe Elizabeth died several years ago.
A big story line was when Savage and Hulk Hogan became a tag team, but you just knew Mach Man would turn on the Hulk, and he did. Great theater.
And Randy Savage had a brother who was also a wrestler. "Leaping" Lanny Poffo was always one of my favorites. He was a good guy, and his schtick was to get on top of the buckles and leap on his opponent. He had some success, but they never let him be a winner, I don't remember him ever winning a bout, but he always put on a good show.
Randy Poffo, BTW, was a former minor baseball player in the Cardinals, then Reds organizations.

Sad day for the wrestling business. RIP, Randy "Macho Man" Savage.

Randy Savage was one of the most colorful personalities in the WWF and I loved how he carried himself in the ring and on his promos. You got a real sense that the "madness" was real.
I was a lot younger in the 80's and 90's when Hulk and Randy were the stars. If I am to be honest, I missed Randy more when he wasn't in wrestling anymore.
Here's one last, "OOooooooo Yeeeeeyahhhhhh!" for you, Macho Man. You will be missed.

Another major part of my childhood gone. RIP Randy 'Mach Man' Savage.

It just goes to show you that you don't need to be at least 6'2" and 275 lbs to have an impact. He established himself during a time when size was everything. This cat will definitely go down as one of the all time greats this industry has ever seen.

He was one of the pioneers when it came to using the microphone to build tension. He also was a colorful ring personality. He was Triple H and the Rock before there was a Triple H and the Rock. His match with Ricky Steamboat at Wrestlemania 3 is still one of the greatest wrestlemania matches in my opinion. He went way too early.

R.I.P Macho Man.
It is a shame that he was not in the WWE Hall of Fame years ago.

Randy,
She was MINE before she was yours!
RIP
Posted by: Ric Flair | May 20, 2011 3:26 PM
Great entertainer! Huge part of WWF.
Everyone can't be Hogan, Road Warriors, Andre or Flair, but when you start that next group with Superstar,Dusty, Bruno, Sting & Steamboat; Randy is in that group.
Ashame that he is going to go into WWE HOF without being able to share it with the fans who enjoyed his talents. I will guess he will be a lock at Wrestlemania in Miami.
As a kid , you couldn't get any better than the Mega Powers...

I can barely speak, just crushed. RIP Mach. Sucks cause I read he & Hogan had just started talking again recently. Weird how it always works out like that, just before someone dies.

Love him or hate him, he was one of the best in the 1980's and 1990's. He definitely was one of my childhood heroes... WrestleMania IV will live on forever (Where he won his first World Title)...
It's unfortunate the WWE hadn't put him in the Hall of Fame up to this point... Sadly, now he will probably go in as a posthumous entry. Hopefully his brother Leaping Lanny Poffo will speak on his behalf at the ceremony and recite some poetry about one of the best ever...
R.I.P. Macho Man

A great legend indeed. I wish he could have been inducted into the Hall of Fame in person. At least we have memories.
Posted by: Chris | May 20, 2011 4:55 PM
Im heartbroken right now. Like most have said its like part of your childhood is gone. I will always have fond memories of the Savage/Warrior match at Summerslam 92, it was a match that always was on at my house. RIP Randy, love you and thanks for the memories

I can't believe this! This is truly tragic. Randy Savage is one of the all-time greats and one of my favorite wrestlers.
R.I.P. Macho Man, you will be missed.

Quite possibly the best all around performer to step through the ropes. Huge piece of my own and millions of others childhoods. Feeling crushed, like a member of my own family is gone. No more hope for new moments, just a lifetime of memories left. Time to pop in the old VHS's and snap into a few Slim Jims. Ooh yeaaah.

Macho Man has to be in everyone's top 5 of all time professional wrestlers. I am genuinely sad to hear of his passing. I kept expecting to see him in the spotlight one more time. Mostly likely by getting inducted into the hall of fame, but instead it will be a posthumous honor. (Someone please explain what that word means to the humanoids!)
Anyone that was a fan of WWF wrestling in the 80's got an overdose of Hulk Hogan. The Macho Man was a great face alternative to Hulk Hogan. He will be missed but he left his mark! Oh Yeah!

Oh, no. One of the all-time compelling personalities and a great talent in the ring. The Madness will live on in our hearts.
Vince. Hall of Fame. Special ceremony! Now!!
Posted by: Roger | May 20, 2011 6:33 PM
My brother pays very little attention to wrestling, yet it was he who broke the news to me. That is a good indicator of the impact Randy Savage had on the business.
Posted by: Christopher | May 20, 2011 6:45 PM
The greatest wrestler past, present and future...yesterday, today and tomorrow.
Too hot to handle, too cold to hold..
Macho Madness - more seductive than sex...
A dark day for wrestling fans everywhere.
OOOOOOHHHH YYEEEAAAAHHHH!!
R.I.P MACHO KING!!!

This has ruined my day. :(

What a loss, and what an entertainer! When I was a kid, he was the one I wanted to watch every week. RIP.

I am too gutted by this to be able to think straight. Crushing news. It's hard to imagine a world without the Macho King.
For me, he will always be what wrestling is about and should aspire to... his unforgettable look, voice, mannerisms and his absolutely uncanny athleticism are what "LARGER-THAN-LIFE" is all about.
Macho Madness will never die. RIP Randy Savage... my all-time favorite.
Devastating, devastating. It feels like the end of an era.

From WWE to WCW, Randy made wrestling worth watching. Memorable matches and unforgettable mic skills, a true legend all around. Thanks for everything Macho Man..... You will be missed.

This was truly a sad way to start my day. Was truly looking forward to his HOF speech next year as many believed was going to happen. You will be missed Macho Man, R.I.P

Randy was my all time Fav and while I still watch WWE it hasn't been the same since he left.
I watch WWE TV and support several local outfits and I don't like TNA at all. That said I can't believe the McMahon family seems to still want to show No Respect to Savage. No mention at all on SD for the man who helped make WWF/WWE into the monster it is today. I don't want to hear it's because he died this morning and since the shows taped on Tuesday nothing could be done because I've seen it done and within the last year.
The McMahons have no class! A little tiny mention on WWE.com and that's it. No Class! Never allowing his fans, friends and family to celebrate with him the HOF induction he so richly deserved. No Class!

Thanks for the tribute post to another late great. When I heard, I honestly teared up a little. Bought a t-shirt for myself and my oldest son today. Watching Randy fight was the best bonding time my son and I ever had... *sniff*
If anyone's wondering, here's the t-shirt I got. http://www.zazzle.com/rip_macho_man_randy_savage_tshirt-235140516853801071
My brother told me they have a mug too, but I can't find it. If anyone knows where it is, please let me know. Of all the years I've been watching, Randy Savage has been the one true great for me. Shame he didn't get to see the hall of fame in his lifetime...

Macho Man was a true icon with quite possibly the greatest catch-phrase ever. He was an original. There will never be another. Thanks for the memories, Mach, and I hope that you are in a better place.

Before everyone start criticising there being no mention on Smackdown, remember smackdown was taped edited and distributed on Tuesday/Wednesday (I was actually watching it here in Australia when I heard the news)
If there is nothing done on the PPV or on Raw then say something ...
Next years HoF is starting to look very full already Rock, Edge and now Macho Man..
Rest In Peace Randy and thanks for the memories

I was deeply taken back and sad from the news of the passing of Macho Man, my co-workers were a little shocked id be so upset of the passing of a " wrestler" but Randy Savage, Hulk Hogan, Road Warriors and a limited few others represent some of the only decent chilhood memories i have growing up in an enviroment not fit for discussing here. He was entertaining, and a great in ring performer, bridging the gap between pro wrestling and sports entertainment,
My favorite Savage quote was during the era of Kayfabe, Macho was asked if wrestling was real. or fake. His reply"
Well Brother, when i win, its real, when i lose.. its fake!!"
A one of kind, god bless the Poffo family

I slept all day Friday. Don't ask about Thursday.
No, really. Not that interesting.
So I didn't hear about Randall Mario until about 15 min ago. Maybe the world is ending. And I'm surprised no one has mentioned Savage/Steamboat yet.

"Great entertainer! Huge part of WWF.
Everyone can't be Hogan, Road Warriors, Andre or Flair, but when you start that next group, Randy is in that group. "
Sorry to disagree, but Macho was absolutely in the Hogan/Flair class. Hogan and Flair could both talk and brawl, Hulk had the look , and Flair had mat skills. Randy could talk, wrestle, fight and fly. Arguably the most underrated wrestler in the last 20-30 years.

so sad he died..seems odd that his wife is ok, so maybe the crash wasnt so bad. i wonder if he had been taking steroids in past for quite some time, as look at what he looked liked...in my thoughts, and that could have caused his heart attack. interesting to hear about the toxicology, but they will probably cover it up.
