Impact: TNA finally gets around to hyping Victory Road

I think it’s official: TNA considers its pay-per-views a lost cause. At least that’s the way it seemed watching Thursday night’s episode of Impact.

Despite it being the go-home show for Sunday’s Victory Road pay-per-view, TNA didn’t bother to reveal the lineup for the card until the final half hour of Impact.

So instead of seeming like a show that’s such a big deal that you have to pay to see it, Victory Road feels like it’s just a bunch of matches thrown together at the last minute. Even if this isn’t one of TNA’s “A” pay-per-views, it still doesn’t make any sense to treat it as such an afterthought.

It’s a shame TNA didn’t do a better job of building it up, because the lineup – headlined by a match between TNA world champion Sting and Jeff Hardy – looks pretty good on paper. If you missed Thursday’s show, however, you may not even know that there is a TNA pay-per-view on Sunday.

Other thoughts on Thursday’s show:

The program opened with new world champion Sting cutting a promo in the ring. He was interrupted by Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff, who came out to their nWo remix entrance music. Welcome to WCW Nitro 1997! ...

The opening segment was effective as far as establishing that Hardy, Mr. Anderson and Rob Van Dam are all after Sting’s title. ...

With his promo style, Anderson sometimes walks a fine line between entertaining and annoying. In first segment, he was the latter. ...

I’ve always believed that having clearly established babyfaces and heels is best for business, but there’s nothing wrong with occasionally having a tweener. In TNA, that guy is Anderson, and he is perfectly suited for the role. He made it clear that he doesn’t like anyone by attacking Sting during a backstage interview. ...

The main event – which saw Sting and RVD defeat the odd couple team of Hardy and Anderson – had a lot of star power, but the match wasn’t anything special, as it only went about five minutes. ...

The three-way street fight (which was really a handicap match) that saw Ric Flair defeat A.J. Styles and Matt Hardy, was fine for what it was, but I really could have done without Flair bleeding all over everybody – again. I wonder if the once-great “Nature Boy” has any idea how much of a sad joke he has become. ...

The parking lot brawl that saw Devon brutalize Bully Ray had a realistic feel to it. I liked how Ray got his heat back after Devon left the scene by beating up the security guard who had come to his aid. ...

I chuckled when Tommy Dreamer talked Devon out of attacking Ray with a sledgehammer by saying, “You’ll go to jail.” Really? How come Crimson didn’t go to jail for stabbing Abyss in the back with the board of nails? And how come Abyss didn’t go to jail when he carved up RVD with the same weapon? ...

The D’Angelo Dinero-Samoa Joe match (won by Dinero) was OK, but there just seems to be something missing with this feud. ...

Roxxi returned to answer TNA Knockouts champion Madison Rayne’s open challenge, but she was pinned rather quickly. Didn’t Roxxi lose a match to Rayne last year that caused her to have to leave TNA? Why was she allowed back? ...

I fast-forwarded through the six-woman tag match – well, most of it, anyway – that involved some chick (not Snooki or Jwoww) from “Jersey Shore.” As I was fast-forwarding, I noticed Velvet Sky showing off her assets while making the winning pin. Needless to say, I immediately hit re-wind. Sky’s post-match celebration (she slapped her own backside) also was a sight to behold. ...

The tag team match that saw Ink Inc. defeat Generation Me was fun. Ink Inc. apparently are still babyfaces. ...

It’s way too early for there to be dissension among the Bucks, who weren’t on the same page against Ink Inc. Hopefully, it won’t last beyond Sunday’s Ultimate X match, which has TNA X Division champion Kazarian defending the title against both Bucks and Robbie E.

your comments are aload of crap. why are you hating on TNA! no one cares what you got too say... period! get a real jmobs sucker!

RESPONSE FROM KE: Obviously you care what I have to say since you read it and took the time to comment.

Here in the UK, we now get all TNA Pay-Per Views for free on TV. Other countries must have this too. Surely this is a sign that they don't care about them anymore. About half of the WWE Pay-Per views are charged for and the other half are 'free' but still on satellite TV.
TNA is slowly dying, and they've only got themselves to blame....

So Kev, I'm just curious, if you end up making a bunch of bad decisions in the next 15 years, and you end up not where you wanted to be, past your prime in an industry that should pass you by, would you like being called a sad joke?

I'm not saying one way or another, as I tend to agree it's sad that Flair has to keep working to pay the bills, as he's clearly unable to manage his funds or his life or make good decisions. Sad? Yes. Joke? Not a very funny one.

Would someone who never reached his level (say some mid-level guy) but made as many bad decisions and ended up having to stick around to pay the bills also be a sad joke? Or is it because he was so great and now he's out there and people have to look away?

Again, I'm just curious about your POV...

RESPONSE FROM KE: As a longtime Flair fan, it breaks my heart to see what he's doing now. The fact that he's wrestling again at 62 (and he looks even older) because of his bad decisions is sad enough, but the constant bleeding is both sad and pathetic. He's gone from one of the greatest of all time to basically being a carnival geek.

Coming in 2013 from WWE Home Entertainment : The Rise and Fall of TNA

Kev, now that the NFL is going into lockout mode, do you think that we will see more of Bart Scott on TNA? His name was mentioned an awful lot by Angle and Anderson.

RESPONSE FROM KE: It wouldn't surprise me.

During the jersey shore tag match they announced that next week the woman's tag titles will be defended against sarita and rosita. Thoughts?

RESPONSE FROM KE: Don't really having a thought on that.

I was flipping channels and caught "Finding Hulk Hogan" on Biography Channel. It made me want to barf. The whole show made Hogan look like St. Peter and his dung doesn't stink. There were constant references of how his ex-wife screwed him over and took him for "everything I got Brudda". Yet there were scenes shot at his nifty little mansion and him tooling around in his cherry restored 1973 Dodge Charger. The show never mentioned the word steroids and completely glossed over his nitwit kid's accident. What a freaking hypocrite. Boo hoo Hulk, you belong in TNA, where, as you said on the show, "I'm making good money". With all the stroke he has backstage at TNA, I seriously doubt they will last 2 more years at most. History shall repeat itself (see WCW). If only Styles would come to his senses and jump ship to Vince, his career could be.......amazing. Plus it would push that numbnuts Cena out of the picture.

No one in wrestling is allowed to have a memory past the previous ppv except cm punk...

I dont think TNA realizes how many fans simply tune out because they dont want to see seriously over-the-hill wrestlers perform on a regular basis. While Flair still has more vitality in him than most his age, he still has the body of a 60 year old. His whole persona is depressing as he comes across as desperate to stay in the biz. A whole generation of fans are growing up with this legacy instead of the man who could go 60 min with the best and was the keystone of the Four Horsemen.

"...a sad joke he has become. ..." Indeed.

One positive for the street fight- All 3 men actually wore street clothes. I hate when WWE hypes a "street fight" and the wrestl..err... Superstars come out in ring attire. I loved the old NWA/WCW street fights when guys would come out wearing jeans and cowboy boots.

"As I was fast-forwarding, I noticed Velvet Sky showing off her assets while making the winning pin. Needless to say, I immediately hit re-wind. Sky’s post-match celebration (she slapped her own backside) also was a sight to behold. ..."

I've said it before.....you have problems...LOL!!

TNA really does suck.

Is it me or does it seem that the Dudley boys(I refuse to call them team 3d) have beenin so many wars in their careers that hits don't even register on them. Dvon hitting Bubba looked like a sledgehammer hitting a mountain.I don't think either of them fell anything anymore. What the hell happened to the women's division?Tna has gone from a revolutionary(too much?) womens cage match to...Jersey Shore? As far as what was missing from the Pope/Joe match, it was interest. The story is stupid and no one cares about it.These two guys don't need a story like this. Just put em in the ring and let the sparks fly.Flair needs to start saving his money because one day the joke that he has become is going to stop being funny to the 3 ppl that find it funny(russo, hogan, and biscoff).Sad.In lighter news...Velvet Sky...yesyesyesYES! I'd slap the undertaker, kane, and the big show for that woman(and Layla)

Wait, when did they ever have a "rise"? The way I see it they've been free falling through a bottomless chasm ever since they started.

"If only Styles would come to his senses and jump ship to Vince, his career could be.......amazing. Plus it would push that numbnuts Cena out of the picture.

You have to be kidding. As great as Styles his (and he is very very great), the moment he steps into the WWE he'll have to start from scratch. Push Cena out of the picture? He'll have to get past the "job to Sheamus for 6 months straight" phase first.

Hey Kev!!
I have been reading your site for a while and I find you to be very informed on the subject of professional wrestling. I like how you are objective and emphasize both the positives and the negatives of both WWE and TNA.

I started watching wrestling in 2006 and Ric Flair was a honorable baby face. When I watched his retirement match, I knew it was a memorable moment and one for the makings.

But if he has a retirement match in TNA with all this bleeding, and sloppiness, I will not feel anything inside or give a flying crap.

Flair IS a sad joke. I don't think anyone here has any real conception of his financial status, so it's hard to say that he NEEDS the money, but I think it is safe to assume that what Flair himself might call economic straits probably aren't what say, a construction worker from Des Moines, Iowa would call the same. He probably IS a glory hog, which is why he, Hogan, Russo, Bischoff and Sting have gotten over past disputes to work together once again--since they all share this despicable trait.
As a big believer in Anderson's talent, I do have to disagree with the perception that it is Anderson's fault himself that he is sometimes annoying, although some of his recent promos, including the one put in question by Mr. Eck, are. I think, given the context of the sterling promos he delivered all throughout last year that this is more from Russo and creative as they maneuver Anderson into a tweener position with the idiotic proviso that they must somehow in doing this strip away a lot of the actual "a@@holery" that got him over in the first place. The comment that the TNA Diva Belt looked stupid and that Anderson could have drawn a better picture by squatting over paper with a crayon in his a$$ is pretty much the last classic Anderson promo we've heard. It seems that Russo is just making him scream "A@@hole" a lot and to get unreasonably angry at everything, because that isn't typical Anderson, and I may be mistaken, but he looks genuinely frustrated a lot of the time. (From the heel that dressed up as Kurt Angle in a bald cap to hilarious face promos with the "Enigmatic A$$holes", Anderson is obviously capable of a lot more than he's doing lately---this is a recent development, so I think we're safe in assuming Russo's involvement.)
A.J. Styles should feel the same as Anderson. (What the hell is Matt Hardy now, the PPV default opponent for every misused young star that TNA is too stupid to write a compelling program for?)...As should Samoa Joe. It's gotten to the point now that the less critical IWC marks are saying that Joe sucks, while his problem is not his own, but the way he has been booked and treated for quite some time now. That is an example of the real damage that morons like Russo and Hogan do over time. The uncritical fans, although they know on one hand that the action isn't real, seem to somehow believe on the other that everything else is, and if a wrestler looks bad because he is being handled in a negative way creatively, they will after a while start complaining that the wrestler himself is bad. Joe has not changed in his ability either outside or in the ring since he was revered as one of wrestling's new stars a couple of years ago. What has changed are the opportunities afforded him to shine. RVD is the only man left sort of standing, because he was already established in a certain way, although his continued involvement with TNA's management and their bone-headed booking and creative decisions has already started chipping his stock down.
It is a sad fate that awaits Anderson, Styles, Joe, the Guns, (what imbecilic plots will they be involved in after Shelley recuperates, now that Beer Money are faces?), and which has already afflicted poor Matt Morgan, who for one shining month in December proved he had what it took only to be relegated back to nothing.
As far as I'm concerned, the show now is how long TNA takes to really fall apart all the way under the guidance of Russo, Hogan and Bischoff. My bet is going to be November of this year. By November, Spike will drop them. I'll give it 12-1 odds.

When did TNA change the march PPV name to "Victory Road" instead of "Destination X"?

And I agree completely on Flair. I stopped watching Impact due to Flair bleeding all over the place late last year; I would be fine with seeing him wrestle occasionally, but I don't need to see him bleed everywhere.

Honestly, I had no idea Victory Road was this weekend. No hype whatsoever.
Kevin, would you have a good guess how much percentage of TNA's finances comes from PPVs and how much comes from Spike? Or is everything really bankrolled by...is it Panda something? Thanks!

At seeing Hogan, Flair, Bischoff and Sting in the ring at the same time, my wife asked me if "TNA is where wrestlers go to die". I totally cracked up at that, but unfortunately, it's true.

So let me get this straight, Tna doesn't hype their ppv, and you criticize it by not mentioning any of the matches that will be on it even though you admit it's not a bad card? Makes sense, I guess, coming from someone who never watches any of their ppvs and swallows hook line and sinker every Wwe ppv regardless of how predictable they are or how much they let you down (How many times in the past year did you make the prediction that HHH was going to come back? Royal Rumble. Elimination Chamber. How many others?).

Tna has flaws but it also has a good mix of young guys, older veterans and legends that put on entertaining shows for those who like the idea of somewhat adult oriented wrestling that pushes the envelope a bit like the Attitude era but without having to suffer through "Superstars" crammed down your throat.

You talk about "go away heat" on here a lot. How can you not see that most of the "Superstars" on Wwe have that kind of heat dogging them on almost every show? Half of the Raw or Smackdown rosters are comprised of some of the worst performers in recent memory. Michael Cole? I don't care about him. Dolph Ziggler? Talented but pretty much another throw away wrestler along the lines of John Morrison. Drew McIntyre, Koslov, Ryder, Primo, Khali... And don't even mention the Divas. Most crowds at shows seem to be more interested in hearing the entrance music for Cena, Orton, HHH, or Edge than anything else. Sure, you don't have to have blood and all kinds of profanity, but the Wwe is horrible and yet Vince asks you to pony up $50 for a ppv every month and you do as told. I don't get it.

I will agree with you on one thing, Flair's behavior on air is somewhat troubling. And I'm not talking just about his propensity for bleeding all over the place. His promos and in ring actions are somewhat disturbing and not in a "sick and twisted Kane" kind of way. I realize this might be the price to be paid for letting him operate without a safety net, but he's gone through a pretty severe transformation from his days as an admirer of A.J. Styles to the unhinged promos that he's cut on everything from Jay Lethal to taking all of the women in the audience to "Space Mountain." Being a legend and reprising a role he had in Wwe as part of Evolution is one thing, but to be the creepy, perverted uncle is quite another.

So I decided to watch Impact start to finish for the first time in a few weeks and boy did I regret it. This was another Wrestling lite show littered with ref incompetence illogical story lines , and stupid finishes.

The opening segment with Sting-Hogan-Bischoff-RVD -Anderson was fine. It just felt it felt like a we've seen Impact open with an talking segment a thousand times oh wait we have.

The Pope-Joe Match got little time and had a silly finish. The crowd was not really into either guy. Which is understandable considering how they've been booked. The ref was in the corner fixing the turnbuckle for an hour. The TNA refs always end up looking so dumb and or incompetent.I feel bad for both guys as they are so much better than they've been booked. Russo really has fubar'd their careers.

That six Knockout tag set Women's wrestling back twenty years. What a disaster. Why did Hebner run out of the ring? He looked like such a tool. The Jersey Shore chick sure added a lot. That was money well spent.

I felt bad for Roxxi as she got no reaction coming out and got squashed by Madison.Man this Mickie-Madison feud will never end will it?

Hey we've got an ulimate X Match on Sunday. The X Division still exists? There hasn't been an X Division Match in weeks and they did nothing to build toward a match that once was a signature match for TNA. Robbie E being in the Match sucks. Kazarian wasn't even on the show and Gen Me doesn't exactly look strong going into the match. The Match should be very good though. TNA won't do anything with the X Division though.

Good to see Tommy Dreamer getting TV time again. I so missed him. I read Bully Ray Vs Dreamer is official for Victory Road. You know with all the talent TNA has and they're giving Tommy Dreamer a PPV Match.

I'll tell ya what's missing from the Dinero/Joe feud: Why are they feuding? With all the hype being thrown at the tired Hogan/Immortal/Fortune/RVD/Anderson/My Mom feud they just threw these two together and figured no explanation was necessary beYond Joe stalking Dinero and Dinero mocking Joe with pictures? HUH?!

Thanks for your reply Kev, I appreciate the clarification, and tend to agree it's not a spectacle I want to see.

Luckily, there are a ton of good Flair memories in my mind to be able to neglect some of the things that he's doing now.

Kev, I'm glad you brought up about Mr. Anderson and his tendency to deliver his promos in a very annoying way! I have thought this for a while and is perhaps why I can never seem to get behind him as a consistent main event player.

There's just no reason to watch TNA other than Styles, the Guns, and Beer Money. Even quality performers like Angle, Morgan, Samoa Joe, and others have lost my interest. Same thing with the Divas. As attractive as Madison Rayne is, she's got no charisma (as a brunette, anyway) and is completely unbelievable as a champion. In real life, someone like Roxi would beat her in 10 seconds.

The crowd giving no reaction, not positive, not negative when Bishoff had a "great idea" in booking that, (what did you call it?) "odd couple" tag team was just perfect! Who didn't see that that was his big finish match for the evening before he even started talking? At least they tried to explain the Sting-RVD siding backstage. Sting doing the "Scott Hall sideways point" toward RVD after the match at least tried to put some relevance onto RVD at this point. Other than that the whole match was pointless that dn't move anything forward or push any type of Sunday PPV story.
Just a thought - maybe Sting will take a dive for RVD while Anderson and Hardy are dealing with each other outside of the ring, being too busy with each other to notice.

Have to love Hardy showing up completely out of it and having a 90 second title match.
