Mat Madness: We’re down to the Elite Eight

matmadness.jpg

The second round of Mat Madness, our bracket-style pro wrestling tournament determined by online voting, is over.

Thank you to all who participated. Voting for the next round (the Elite Eight) begins tonight at midnight EDT. You can vote up to five times a day.

The biggest surprise of Round 2 was the lopsided result of what I expected to be a close matchup between Chris Jericho and Edge. Jericho soundly defeated his former friend/foe, 66 percent to 34 percent. Next up for Jericho is John Cena.

There were four inter-promotional matchups between WWE and TNA stars in the second round, with WWE winning three of them. Kurt Angle – who beat CM Punk – is the lone TNA wrestler remaining in the tournament.

People have short memory. A couple of years ago, back when Edge was playing a great heel character in his feuds against Cena & Taker, while Jericho was doing his boring, lame rethread of his 90s babyface character, the poll result would have been very different. But then Jericho turned into an exciting heel and now Edge is the one stuck playing a boring babyface character. So the result is really no surprise.

As an aside, Kurt Angle is grossly overrated. He might have won an Olympic gold medal but his professional wrestling matches are not generally much better than CM Punk. It's just that Angle's matches have been viewed more than the latter's. Obviously, most of the voters have never watched any match from ROH, let alone the truly great ones involving Punk. Those matches made Angle's best performances look like an amateur wrestling. Pun intended.

I luv both Edge and Chris Jericho, but I really wanted Edge to win. :)

For the person who said Kurt Angle is overrated and compared him to the level of CM Punk, you obviously weren't watching Angle when he was in the WWE. He would blow CM Punk and the rest of the current WWE roster out of the water!

In my opinion, he's at the same level as Shawn Michaels, he was just never pushed as hard as HBK...

If I were calling Kurt Angle grossly overrated, I'd stay Anonymous too.

Biggest surprise has to be Big Show making the Elite Eight. I chalk that up to a lackluster bracket more then anything, though I do think Jeff Hardy would have done much better a few weeks ago.

Hey Kev,

Tried to vote, but the poll options would not load. Sad news bears.

RESPONSE FROM KE: Voting opens at midnight tonight.

Angle overrated? Absurd. Like Omar stated, Angle in his prime was better than anyone on the WWE roster now. And I'm a Punk mark!!

I predict that Jericho will beat Cena by landslide. If not I riot, lol.

Omar, of course I've seen Angle wrestled in the WWE. Who hasn't? Practically every wrestling fan has seen Angle wrestled in the WWE. But have you seen CM Punk wrestled outside the WWE? I'd bet you haven't. Because if you or Ken Raining did, neither of you wouldn't be surprised that someone could reckon CM Punk is a better professional wrestler than Angle. I'm not saying Angle is a bad wrestler but some people think he's the greatest wrestler ever because of his Olympic background. He's not perfect. All too often, Angle moves rather stiffly inside the ring. His moveset is surprisingly limited for someone with an amateur background - numerous other wrestlers like Regal, Bryan & Punk have a larger moveset. Finally, Angle's ability to tell a story inside the ring through his facial expressions and moves is sorely lacking when compared to the likes of HBK, the Rock or - yes, indeed - CM Punk. Now that both Punk & Angle have wrestled the same opponents, it is even easier to compare their performances. Punk's matches with Rey Mysterio were superior in every regard to Angle's matches with Mysterio. And Punk's matches with Samoa Joe are among the best matches that you will ever see, period. Angle's matches against Samoa Joe were just ordinary by comparison.

Kevin,

A little off-topic, but when considering the selection of Abdullah the Butcher to the WWE Hall of Fame, I was wondering if he will break his career-long kayfabe as a mute lunatic, or will he actually deliver an acceptance speech? Just curious as to what others think

RESPONSE FROM KE: He's done interviews out of character before. I'm sure he will break kayfabe at the HOF.

If Angle were still in WWE, he would win easily.

Based on reality, I think he has an outside chance to win but I will be surprised if Jericho or Undertaker, most likely Undertaker, doesn't win.

Kevin, any chance that Foley inducts Abdullah?

RESPONSE FROK KE: No, Foley still works with TNA.

My prediction is that Undertaker will win the whole thing.

CM Punk is the best in the business right now, second to none. Angle WAS great, one of the all-time greats, but his TNA work is fairly average, and has been said before, it's not just all about the in-ring side.

Punk tells a story better than almost any superstar in the past 10-15 years. His promos are awesome, and he also had a sterling career before WWE with ROH.

Disappointed he is now out of the tournament considering those that remain.

Go, Jericho, go! Go, Jericho, go! Go, Jericho, go!

Anonymous, (haha... anonymous...)

I agree Punk is a great wrestler, probably the best on the WWE roster right now. But think about it this way, a WWE CM Punk is nowhere near the level of a WWE Kurt Angle, or Benoit, or Guerrero...

Now imagine what kind of a wrestler a ROH Kurt Angle could have been in his prime?

I've seen CM Punk matches in ROH, and they're awesome. I'm not trying to take anything away from them, but claiming that Angle is over-rated and lacks in moves & facial expressions is just ridiculous!

Plus, in my opinion, the Kurt vs. Rey matches are sooooooo much better than any CM Punk vs Rey matches...

when does the voting end?

RESPONSE FROM KE: This round ends Sunday night at 11:59 EDT.
