Mat Madness: The Final Four

matmadness.jpg

It was a weekend of upsets.

Virginia Commonwealth stunned Kansas. Butler knocked off Florida. And Chris Jericho did something he has never done before: defeat John Cena.

Actually, he destroyed John Cena.

In the third round of Mat Madness, our bracket-style pro wrestling tournament determined by online voting, Jericho – the Cinderella story of the tournament – got more than 70 percent of the vote against pro wrestling’s top star.

Jericho now moves on to the Final Four, where he will meet Kurt Angle, who advanced by beating Triple H in the closest third-round matchup (55.4 percent to 44.6 percent).

The other Final Four showdown pits The Undertaker against Randy Orton. “The Deadman” and “The Viper” squashed their third-round opponents – The Big Show and Batista, respectively.

Thank you to all who participated. Voting for the Final Four begins tonight at midnight EDT. You can vote up to five times a day.

Really didn't like the previous round of results, but I really like these results, especially Angle over HHH.

As far as Jericho vs. Angle, I am as big a Jericholic as any, but let's be frank-- Angle is a once-in-a-generation talent. One of the best in the ring, but unbelievable on the mic, too... he was such a successfully hateful super-heel back in WWE it's hard to believe I could ever root for him in anything.

Jericho, even at his heeliest, I usually still felt some affection for. Jericho as a face I often thought was a little smarmy.

I really appreciate Jericho on a number of levels but, like all the others in this competition, he is no Kurt Angle.

What this tells me is that your demographic is clearly not little kids and girls...

Looks like your blog readers actually care about talent, which is a very good thing.

Very interesting...and it has been all along. I just left a vote on both matches, and noticed that at this point anyway, Jericho is pulling well ahead of Angle.
I wonder if this is because Jericho, through heel turns and face turns, has retained more of an overall consistency to his central character.
Angle nowadays is obviously still one of the best actual wrestlers in terms of ring ability, but I think that his bland "Warrior" character is, and has been since he started it, not as entertaining as his classic cartoonish, milk-drinking, goody-two shoes heel, and is so much of a departure from it that it hurts his overall credibility.
Jericho on the other hand has vacillated between the smarmy good guy, the even more smarmy heel, and his Anton Chigurh self-righteous man character, but none of them deviated from an essential "Jericho-ness", and were all somewhat three-dimensional and entertaining and larger than life.
We'll see how the final results pan out, but I'd be willing to theorize that the bald, "realistic", vanilla tough guy that Kurt Angle has played for too long now will be the reason behind what looks like it's going to be a big Jericho win, spiced with a dash of tainted TNA as opposed to the more readily swallowed WWE, which Jericho is still associated with.
Orton and Undertaker is a no-brainer, and a good sign that for all of the "best all time" lists that suspiciously feature modern WWE stars, that none of them have really been a breakout character like the Undertaker was, and still is twenty years later.
At the risk of again taking up too much space, I just need to point out that some of this seems to be an idea on the part of WWE and TNA lately to stay away from "over the top", actual Characters, preferring to push more "realistic" figures. Randy Orton, for all the voices, etc., is still Randy Orton. Undertaker is, well...We can bring that full circle back to Jericho. He has that full-fledged over-the-top Character---Angle gave it up some time ago for a more "realistic" edge, forgetting that it's still wrestling. You have to keep the over-the-top and the showmanship, because that's the nature of the whole staged morality play that wrestling is. (and also why I still see a lot of potential in Mr. Anderson/Kennedy---who did pretty well in the first round against a longtime fan favorite in Kane, despite people complaining he's too annoying and "cartoony"---those are the reasons why he did well-and why he's actually one of the only heirs today to the Jericho/Undertaker/Rock/Nature Bot/etc. tradition. In the end--wrestling is still about Gorgeous George and Roddy Piper---it's an over the top play with over the top physical conflict, and needs at the end of the day over the top characters---not some forced amalgamation of reality TV stars and MMA fighters---that's why Undertaker is still around-he knows pageantry.)

The eyes of the pro wrestling world are all upon you blog now Kevin to see how everyone fares.

Too bad you cannot make even a fraction of the money WWE makes entertaining wrestling fans with Wrestlemania doing this!

This is not Bret, Flair or Shawn country. This is Jericho country.
