WWE Smackdown: Kelly Kelly gets fired up, then fired
When it was announced on Raw Monday that Edge and Kelly Kelly would face Dolph Ziggler and Lay-Cool in a handicap tag team match on Smackdown Friday with Edge’s world heavyweight title on the line, my first thought was that it was a pretty silly idea.
However, after watching the show, I have to admit that I found the match and the post-match angle to be quite entertaining.
For one thing, it was nice to have some Divas (especially Kelly Kelly) in the main event mix for a change. I’m also enjoying seeing the upstart Ziggler in a fresh world title program with veteran superstar Edge. And Vickie Guerrero, of course, was fun to watch, as always.
The match told a good story, as the heels isolated Kelly Kelly. Lay-Cool got several near falls on her, which provided some drama, because had Kelly Kelly been pinned, Edge would have lost the title to Ziggler.
In the end, the babyfaces overcame the odds – which were stacked even further against them when Guerrero ruled before the match that Edge was prohibited from using The Spear – and foiled the heels’ plan. After Michelle McCool inadvertently kicked Layla in the face, Kelly Kelly hit The Spear on Layla and pinned her for the victory.
After the match, an incensed Guerrero fired Kelly Kelly, who burst into tears as she left the ring, and Ziggler hit the Zig Zag on Edge. For next week’s show, Guerrero booked a world title match between Edge and Ziggler with her as the special referee.
I’m interested to see what happens next with Kelly Kelly – who has definitely showed a wider range of emotions recently – and how Drew McIntyre may be fit into the picture.
Other thoughts on Friday’s show:
Booker T. made his debut as a Smackdown color commentator, and he had a rough first night on the job. He sounded unsure of himself and didn’t really add anything to the broadcast. I started missing Matt Striker pretty early in the show. Booker and Michael Cole tried to do the bickering announcers shtick, but Cole easily won their war of words. In fact, I think Cole took pity on Booker and held back a bit. In Booker’s defense, doing commentary certainly isn’t easy, so perhaps he’ll get better with experience. I’m just thankful he used his normal voice rather than doing the Black Snow character he had created in TNA. ...
It’s funny, because after Booker and Kevin Nash returned at last Sunday’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view, I thought that if they stuck around WWE, Booker would be the one to remain active in the ring, while Nash would work for the company in a non-wrestling capacity, perhaps as a color commentator. It looks as if those roles may be reversed. On a side note, Booker said that he would be one of the trainers on the upcoming "Tough Enough" series. ...
The participants are set for the Elimination Chamber match at the pay-per-view of the same name, which takes place Feb. 20. It will be Edge defending the world heavyweight title against Ziggler, McIntyre, Rey Mysterio, Wade Barrett and Kane. In qualifying matches, McIntyre beat Kofi Kingston, Mysterio beat Jack Swagger, Barrett (with help from The Corre) beat The Big Show, and Kane beat Chavo Guerrero. Ziggler was inserted into the match by Vickie Guerrero without having to wrestle in a qualifier. ...
It appears that Alberto Del Rio is going to feud with Kingston to kill time before his WrestleMania XXVII showdown with Edge. Del Rio’s distraction caused Kingston to lose to McIntyre, and he also attacked Kingston with a piñata stick and put him in the Cross Armbreaker later in the show. I suppose there is a possibility that the Edge-Del Rio match at WrestleMania becomes a triple threat, with Kingston added to the mix. ...
Del Rio beating up Hornswoggle was an effective way to get heat on Del Rio. Of course, I went against the grain and cheered wildly in my living room when Del Rio brutalized the little fellow. By the way, why has WWE never followed up on the apparent attraction between Del Rio and Rosa Mendes, who was in the ring with Hornswoggle during this segment? Perhaps Del Rio doesn’t find Rosa as attractive now that she’s a brunette instead of a blonde. Can’t say I blame him. ...
The McIntyre-Kingston bout was the best match on the show. To me, McIntyre is looking more and more as if he will live up to his “Chosen One” moniker. ...
The Mysterio-Swagger match was good. I have no problem with Mysterio winning, and I realize that there are only so many spots in the Chamber match, but I really wish Swagger would start getting pushed again. Personally, I’d rather see him in the Chamber match than Kane. ...
Chavo Guerrero was in an Elimination Chamber qualifying match? Really? ...
What in the world did Ezekiel Jackson say on the mic to Big Show after he body-slammed him following the Big Show-Barrett match? ...
Ziggler did a decent job on the mic during the opening segment with him, Vickie Guerrero and Kelly Kelly. ...
With McCool accidentally hitting Layla again, it seems as if we’re moving closer to a Lay-Cool split. Why do I get the feeling that when that occurs, McCool is going to be booked like Shawn Michaels, and Layla is going to be Marty Jannetty? ...
It appeared that Kelly Kelly hit her head hard when McCool swung her into the barricade. ...
By the way, Kelly Kelly looked ridiculously hot on this show. Just sayin’.

I was really entertained by Smackdown this week. Other online reports have Booker being a trainer for Tough Enough. I was happy to see him back.
RESPONSE FROM KE: Yes, I should have mentioned that. In fact, I'll add a note now.

I think the Ezekiel Jackson quote was something from the Book of Ezekiel:
"The end has come, it has awakened against you”
I'm pretty sure he did the same sort of thing back during his ECW run, so that would make the most sense.

Easy - Drew McIntyre, as the Chosen One, will talk to Mr. McMahon to bring her job back. If it ain't that, the writers are simply dumb.
THEN pwnsider comes and refutes me saying that Kelly Kelly has been released. MAN. (Not true, but you know how the industry is nowadays. :/ )

Where's Matt Striker?
And is Sting coming on 2/21/11?
Posted by: eee | February 5, 2011 10:11 PM
I kinda of thought (hoping?) the paint would wear off of Kelly Kelly's ringwear. In words of Ron Simmons "DAMN"

I haven't followed wrestling as close the last few years but I was surprised when I watched the opening of Smackdown. Gone was the lame airhead who tried to make us believe she'd actually strip on ECW. This Kelly Kelly had some fire and jumped a lot of rungs in my book during that segment.
The unfortunate thing was that fire went kaput as soon as she was fired. I get that being fired is devastating but after that fire I expected her to kick Vicki's a** then breakdown and leave. Granted that would ruin Vickie's announcement but it would have been a lot better in my eye.

What's Matt Striker going to do now that Booker T is the new third announcer on SmackDown? Might he go to Raw and do color commentary while Jerry Lawler prepares for his WWE Championship match at Elmination Chamber?

i think vickie guerrero made a huge mistake in firing kelly kelly

Future boxing champ lil mean man mulholland 'zack' wants kelly kelly back on and for kelly kelly to wait for him when he's older,...haha...7yrs till then.

the World Heavyweight Championship match at wrestlemania bein a triple threat would be a very interesting idea, but knowing wat's goin on w/ WWE and wantin to push Alberto Del Rio so hard, i think that it'll most likely remain a singles match to give enough spotlight to Del Rio. i kinda think to even put more push on him, they may have him actually win the Intercontinental championship against Kofi Kingston wen they officially announce that matchup at Elimination Chamber.
I was actually askin myself the same question w/ Alberto Del Rio and Rosa Mendez earlier today, just daydreaming. another example of WWE discontinuing stuff. nobody woulda've payed attention to that if they just showed them makin eyes once, but to do it in two different spots? of course ppl are gonna think that they're gonna get together so to just stop is just stupid, but WWE has its moments. idk maybe they'll realize that and actually put them together. and seriously??? you actually prefer blonde over brunette??? i kinda think that brunette makes the girl even more beautiful than blonde. blonde is so plain and only few can pull it off. lol just raggin on you man, i understand where you're comin from.
W/ the Laycool split-up: yes i have no doubt in my mind that Layla will be put to the side. idk if you've noticed, but for the most part, WWE doesn't really put too much of an emphasis on their black wrestlers. yea you have a few exceptions(like Kofi Kingston), but think about it:
- Mark Henry comes to RAW last year(or 2009. i forget)and beats Randy Orton and pins him 1, 2, 3. crowd purely erupts. got one of the biggest cheers that night. you'd think that would put him over and put him in line for a world title shot right? Nope. weeks after that he's reduced to a no-winning tag team w/ MVP. and speaking of his tag team w/ MVP, they beat the then tag team champions and lose wen the titles are on the line and don't think they got another title shot again after that.
- Cryme Tyme: WAY over w/ the crowd. won a tag team turmoil gauntlet match for number one contendership for the tag team titles, but NEVER got a title shot and then get fired a few weeks later.
- R-Truth: definitely over. wins United States championship one week and then loses it two weeks later. reason? because E3 was comin up and they wanted to bring a champion that was close to a celebrity so they put it back on Miz. if they wanted a champion celebrity, they coulda've either left the title on Miz in the first or even sent John Cena. not sure if he was the champion at that time or not, but since he's the posterboy for WWE and that he's already a crossover celebrity, him just being there would be enough. besides knowin how the media is wen not doing their homework on the current happenings of wrestling, they still probably woulda advertised him as WWE Champion. they did it to Vladimir Kozlov one time wen he was advertised in a news article as the WWE Champion at the time of the published article.
so to guess how Layla will be treated after they split up, do not be surprised if you find yourself askin "wat happened to her?" and then seein her get the Gail Kim treatment.

I agree with you that Kelly looked hot on this show.
And her backstage segment with Edge was really good! I can't believe I'm saying this but Kelly Kelly is the most compelling thing on Smackdown! but that's actually good :/. Well and Alberto Del Rio.. but you already know that.
I gotta give Booker T. some time. First night on the job having Vince in his ear.. gotta give him time. But will Striker be on RAW now? I'm thinking will he replace Lawler while Lawler maybe joins the active roster until after Wrestlemania?

Isn't it time for Vicky Guerrero gets fired or that Edge slaps the hell out of her.

"The participants are set for the Elimination Chamber match at the pay-per-view of the same name, which takes place Feb. 21." It actually takes place Feb. 20. Just thought I'd point that out.
RESPONSE FROM KE: Thanks. Guess I have 2-21-11 on my mind for some reason.

"it seems as if we’re moving closer to a Lay-Cool split. Why do I get the feeling that when that occurs, McCool is going to be booked like Shawn Michaels, and Layla is going to be Marty Jannetty?"
IMHO, McCool is the not only the more attractive of the two, she also is much more easier to like than Layla.

I wonder when the Undertaker will return. It will bring more entertainment to smackdown.

this was a great show
worth watching!
- lay is way better than shell...
- i dont think rosa is good enough (performance wise) to work with alberto. but i hope she improves because i love hearing her yell spanish in-ring.
- i hope Kelly Kelly sticks around after her 'firing' so that McIntyre is put back in the big picture (too many storey lines that go no where can stay bulked up in TNA thanks)
- speaking of unfinished storey lines. is christian a big enough star to be involved in edge's title when he returns against del rio?

hat in the world did Ezekiel Jackson say on the mic to Big Show after he body-slammed him following the Big Show-Barrett match? ...
It's a bible quote:
"The End has come, it has awakened against you"
(Ezekiel 7:6)
but you are not the only one, who doesn't know his bible...
Posted by: Chris | February 6, 2011 9:14 AM
I think Drew McIntyre goes to Vickie in a week or two and begs to get Kelly Kelly back and Vickie tells him sure, but you have to beat Edge first.
Posted by: Sam | February 6, 2011 9:20 AM
i disagree, Layla will NOT be the Maty Jannetty, 1st off, she is hotter than McCool, and she has improved a million times over in the ring in thel ast few years. Im not saying McCool will be the Jannetty either, but i just dont think either of them will be taking the "Jannetty" route...
Posted by: CJ | February 6, 2011 11:20 AM
Ouch Booker... Cole got you this time. One thing I didn't like that Cole corrected Booker on was when Booker said its not a match you want to get in really... " Cole told him it's the only way to win the championship and get to Wrestlemania (which is true) but I took it as Booker saying that you don't want to be in an Elimination Chamber match because it's brutal on your body and shortens careers as they always say.
Posted by: Chris | February 6, 2011 11:29 AM
So correct me if I am wrong, but is Kelly Kelly the first diva to defend (successfully mind you) the World Heavyweight championship?
Posted by: Anonymous | February 6, 2011 11:52 AM
WWE should make Sting's debut more interesting and have it on 11-11-11. Wait, someone already tried something like that? And it was LAME? Oh, sorry.
Posted by: Cliff | February 6, 2011 3:04 PM
Kelly Kelly just might have become the WWE's number one attraction in one night.
I'd bet the ranch that WWE finds a way to put her on next week's Smackdown. Heck, I'd bet Linda McMahon's political career on it... hmm.
Posted by: Ruzious | February 6, 2011 5:05 PM
I wonder if Kelly Kelly will pull a John Cena and start beating up Lay Cool and Vicki backstage now that she has been "fired" that would be awesome.
Posted by: The Nature Boy | February 6, 2011 6:37 PM
I think Teddy Long will return to Smackdown next week and re-hire Kelly Kelly.
Posted by: Stanley | February 6, 2011 8:08 PM
To Sam....like the way your wheels are turning. makes sense. Also, Josh was kickin on Cole all night.
3 seconds before Kelly's spear, I said, "OMG, shes gonna spear Layla. As epic as "killswitch" at Rumble
ECK ROCKS~~~~~

I think the Michaels/Jannety division doesn't really work here. When they split they'd been known as the rockers as long as I could remember (I was a kid but I don't remember them as singles wrestlers until the split).
Here we had an already established dominant diva in Michelle McCool who'd had numerous title reigns take another diva under her wing. At the time Layla's most notable accomplishment was dancing on ECW with extreme expose.
Of course when they split Michelle will still be up top. She lost nothing from it. In fact she managed to usurp Layla's one title reign.
Layla might manage to flourish on her own but already they have her as the frightened heel that no one takes seriously alone.

i think the decision of "EXCUSE ME"was not good on last friday nt smack down. But i hope in some next few week's my no #1 diva kelly kelly will re-hired by early GM of smackdown.
Posted by: wahid | February 7, 2011 1:30 AM
Sounded a lot like Booker had not been following the product in his absence. It showed when Swagger was in the ring and all Booker kept saying was "look at the size of this guy, he's so much bigger. He'll use his size to his advantage etc". Clearly all he kew about Swagger was what he could see infront of him. You'd think they would have prepared him a little better or tried to help him out in the headsets.
Zeke - That was excruciatingly corny and very "written". It was a shame because the huge slam and his reaction to it were pretty good, then he killed the moment with a timid and non-sensical bible reference. I don't imagine they will get many 'Big Zeke, 7:6" signs at the next show.
Posted by: Big Dave | February 7, 2011 5:45 AM
I'm still waiting on a an "EXCUSE ME" t-shirt...I'm "DAMN" made it on a t-shirt...

Do you really think Layla's drug recreations are that out of control?
Posted by: Mr. Sarcasm | February 7, 2011 10:48 PM
First off, yes Kelly looked awesome. 2nd Drew McIntyre can bring Kelly back because he's the chosen one and Mcmahon is back. The break up of Laycool. Could be great. They are obviously going to fight it out but eventually get back together down the line. One's probably going to rescue the other from a horrible beating from Awesome Kong or something. In the meantime WWE should rehire Brooke Adams(Ms Tessmaucher) and due a reunion of extreme exposay. And maybe get that Xpose playboy shoot that was rumored so long ago. None of that will happen but I can dream right.??

Maybe she can come back in a mask under the name Michelle Michelle?
Btw, whatever happened to Candace? GoDaddy.com looks like they could use her help again.
