WWE Raw: This Rumble match has royal winner

It’s starting to look as if this might be the year that Jerry “The King” Lawler finally gets his WrestleMania moment.

The 61-year-old WWE Hall of Famer outlasted the biggest stars on the Raw roster to win a seven-man Royal Rumble match on Raw Monday night and earn a title shot against WWE champion The Miz at the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view on Feb. 20.

I certainly don’t expect Lawler to beat Miz for the title, but I do think this angle will lead to Lawler’s first match at WrestleMania. Participating in a match at WWE’s biggest annual event is something that Lawler has said publicly -- including in an interview with me last year-- that he’s always wanted to do.

If Lawler does get booked for WrestleMania XXVII on April 3, my guess is that he would either face Alex Riley and Michael Cole in a handicap match or Riley in a singles match with the stipulation that Lawler gets five minutes with Cole if he wins.

As soon as it was announced on Raw that Lawler was one of the seven participants in the Rumble match that would determine the No. 1 contender, it was obvious the way it was being built up throughout the show that Lawler was going to win.

But even though the outcome was predictable, the match – which also had John Cena, Randy Orton, CM Punk, John Morrison, Sheamus and R-Truth in it – was very entertaining. In fact, I enjoyed it more than the 40-man Rumble match at Sunday’s pay-per-view, which shows that sometimes less really is more.

In addition to the match determining who will challenge Miz at the Elimination Chamber, the other part of the stipulation was that the six wrestlers who did not win would go on to face each other in an Elimination Chamber match at the pay-per-view, with the winner getting a shot at the WWE title at WrestleMania against either Miz or Lawler.

The final three in Monday’s match were Lawler, Cena and Sheamus. Cena was eliminated when Sheamus threw Lawler into him while Cena was standing on the ring apron. Sheamus then went for the Brogue Kick on Lawler, but Lawler moved out of the way, Cena pulled down the top rope and Sheamus went over, giving Lawler the victory.

Other thoughts on Monday’s show:

Morrison had some cool spots during the Rumble match and came off looking like a major star. It’s looking more and more as if 2011 is going to be Morrison’s breakout year. ...

Cena hoisting both Morrison and R-Truth up on his shoulders at the same time was impressive. ...

Orton was the last guy to enter the match, and as soon as he came out, Punk jumped out of the ring and hid underneath it. That was funny. ...

Also funny – although for a different reason – was the botched spot in which Morrison and R-Truth were simultaneously trying to do the skin-the-cat move. Morrison did it, but time seemed to stand still as R-Truth struggled to pull himself up and back into the ring. He never did make it, as he just kind of flopped through the ropes into the ring. R-Truth, by the way, spent a good portion of the match going after fellow babyfaces Cena and Morrison. ...

The second champion vs. champion match between world heavyweight champion Edge and WWE champion The Miz was much like their first meeting on last week’s show: It was OK, but nothing special. The stipulation was that there had to be a winner this time, and Edge got the pin after Miz was distracted by Cena. ...

Acting Smackdown general manager Vickie Guerrero announced that Edge will defend the world heavyweight title against Dolph Ziggler on Smackdown Friday night in a manner that has never been done before. Later in the show, it was revealed that the match will pit Edge and Kelly Kelly against Ziggler and Lay-Cool in a handicap match, and if Edge and Kelly Kelly lose, Ziggler wins the title. So in other words, if Layla pins Kelly Kelly, Edge loses the belt. Is Vince Russo secretly booking for WWE? ...

I liked the opening segment, which began with Alberto Del Rio celebrating his Royal Rumble win by having a mariachi band playing in the ring. Del Rio announced that he would face Edge for the world heavyweight title (if Edge is still champion after the Elimination Chamber) at WrestleMania. The segment ended with Del Rio shattering a guitar over Edge’s arm and then applying the Cross Armbreaker. This initial confrontation already has me looking forward to the match between Edge and Del Rio. ...

Ricardo Rodriguez’s facial expressions during Del Rio’s promo were tremendous. Rodriguez definitely adds a lot to Del Rio’s act. ...

Speaking of facial expressions, how great were Orton’s in the moments before he punted Husky Harris in the head? ...

The WWE tag team title match that saw Santino Marella and Vladimir Kozlov defeat Harris and Michael McGillicutty was entertaining. ...

Things continue to go poorly for Ted DiBiase Jr. After taunting Lawler, DiBiase pulled Maryse in front of him so that Lawler couldn’t hit him. That angered Maryse, who slapped DiBiase, and then Lawler nailed him with a punch to the face that looked as if it legitimately connected. ...

Natalya certainly was in a good mood for someone who lost the WWE Divas title the night before and was now teaming with the new champion, Eve Torres. The tag match match – which saw Lay-Cool defeat Natalya and Eve – was entertaining while it lasted. Layla’s Facelift finisher on Eve looked awesome. ...

Well, so much for my story line idea that had the Bella twins recruiting Tyson Kidd to go after Daniel Bryan, thus starting a program between the two talented workers. Bryan finished off Kidd in less than two minutes in a match that was really just a means to have the Bellas and Gail Kim go at it in another catfight. ...

I’m sure a lot of people probably hated the segment in which Mark Henry and The Great Khali competed against The Usos in a dance contest, but, honestly, I’d rather see Khali dance than wrestle.

Agreed about Orton's facials. He has the best ones going today.

The opening segments of RAW keep showing the Ultimate Warrior. Any chance he will get inducted this year into the WWE Hall of Fame?

MY FAVORITE PART WAS THE DANCE CONTEST! I LIKE STUFF THAT'S FUNNY!

One of the tip offs to Lawler winning was that the six nonwinners would wrestle in the Elimination Chamber. Quite frankly I couldn't see The King going through that type of brutual match. I would have Cena win the Chamber and King win the belt. Turn Cena heel that way.

Having Lawler win that match was pretty unbelieveable in my oppinion. No way he could of held on to the ropes with Shemus and others trying to toss him over. It looked like the others had to hesitate or pause to let him get his kicks or punches in (much like a TNA diva's match very choppy).

The rest of RAW was pretty solid though. Orton looked good as did the Miz.

I enjoyed Michael Cole's commentary for the time, and it came during the Khali dance-off.

"Hey big man- You don't have to go for the pin-fall there. This is a dance-off, not a match."

The Sting "report" from the NY Daily News is a not real. If you notice, nobody reporting this has provided a link. The NY Daily News does not have a reporter called King Jordan, they have one called the Slammer who has not reported the Sting signing. He may well have signed but the alleged report from King Jordan is not the support needed to confirm.

I laughed when Khali went for the pin on one of the Usos. Michael Cole was funny when he pointed out that Khali didn't need to go for a pin because it wasn't a match.

Great RAW. Most importantly, I found it very entertaining! Some highlights for me:

1. Orton's punt and expressions I also liked when he stood up in the crowd. He seems much more defying towards Nexus than Cena was.

2. Del Rio's celebration especially his mention on Bieber's music made me LOL'd.

3. Morrison's actions in the ring!

4. Cena's uplifting the rope to deliberately making Sheamus lose.

5. Usual actions

I didn't found the outcome as predictable cause' I did thought that Morrisson could also have a chance to compete against the Miz.

For Lawler, congrats on winning and about his Wrestlemania match, I think it will be against Cole and the GM (perhaps)

I guess Del Rio is the WWE's Jeff Jarrett. He is the "Chosen One" who will use a guitar to his advantage. Maybe Vince Russo really is booking WWE, too.

"Morrison had some cool spots during the Rumble match and came off looking like a major star. It’s looking more and more as if 2011 is going to be Morrison’s breakout year. ..."

That's why I don't understand why the WWE didn't give him his titles shot at the Rumble. Because the Rumble is the main event, it's an easy way to give a guy the boost of being in a title bout on a PPV without having to worry about buy rates. Sunday did wonders for Ziggler, and now I expect him to be the favorite in the MITB match and win a world title this year.

Conversely, the Raw championship match did nothing to help Orton (who doesn't need any help) or Miz. It hurt the buildup to the Rumble match, because they couldn't build Orton as a favorite. If you take the match Morrison and Miz had three weeks ago and put it on the PPV, everyone would benefit; Miz gets a big win, and Morrison looks like a star. I'm still not convinced they don't think he (Morrison) has a ceiling.

About that Dance-Off - hey never announced the winners. Was it the Usos or Mark Henry and Khali? How could WWE have left this match unresolved? I'm still worried about it.

In response to wrzesien, there is no chance the Warrior will get inducted this year. As Kevin has stated, WWE always has one big name every year, and this year it is Shawn Michaels. They do this so the tickets sell out.

Macho Man, Warrior or any other big name wrestlers won't go in this year, because names like that can sell out the ceremony all by themselves in future years.

I think it's entirely possible they put the belt on Lawler to give him his moment in the sun.
Then he could either drop the belt back to The Miz the following night on RAW. Another possible scenario would be that five minutes after winning the title Lawler gets stripped of the belt and fired from the WWE for hitting Michael Cole.

Of course, Lawler will be brought back in time for WMXVII and will face either Cole or Alex Riley in the manner you suggest.

I'm not a fan of LayCool but I thought Layla was hillarious in the ring.

I agree, time stood still as R-Truth tried in vain to skin the cat. Sad really. Morrison sucks on the mic but rocks in the ring. Very entertaining. Punk vs. Orton should be a very fun series to watch. I like Triple H but his movie looks dreadful! The King can really sell a punch, but I question the choice of his getting a championship match. I thought Natalya was very gracious about losing the belt. Took too long for the punt to happen. Randy sold it well.

Lawler wins title @ PPV with help from Cena, Cena wins Chamber. Miz regains title on RAW with help from Riley. Lawler vs Riley, Miz vs Cena for WWE Championship @ Mania... Bet on it..

Everyone wins that way. Lawler gets his Championship reign, and match @ Mania...

The dance contest was the most embarrasing thing I have ever seen WWE do. Whoever thought of that in Creative should have been immediately taken behind the arena and put before a firing squad. And then fired. And then fired again. Then dismembered so that such a mess never be shown on TV EVER again. I bet in a shoot fight, the Usos would beat those two big slow turds every time.

I'm not too sure about Lawler not getting the belt. As of late, WWE has been giving veterans who haven't held a lot of gold previously an unexpected run with a title before their careers end. I'm thinking of JBL's run, Kane's recent run, and to some extent, Tommy Dreamer's run with the ECW belt. And Miz has been throwing a lot of jibes at Lawler over him not being a world champ.

I could see Lawler getting the belt due to some form of interference, especially off of Miz, who is probably the only main eventer who is seen as weak enough to fall for that. The only question is how to get the belt back off of Lawler before WM.

RESPONSE FROM KE: None of those guys you mentioned are 61, though.

It's funny to think that someone like Ric Flair thinks he needs to get over by blading every week while a man like Lawler, who is not (or was not) as renowned as Flair hasn't had to do that to get over AND get a title shot on PPV.

http://www.wrestlezone.com/news/article/even-more-on-22111-ny-daily-news-reports-sting-to-wwe-122681 NY Daily News post does exist.

I find it interesting that now that Randy is a face or tweener people are cheering the punt. For once Michael Cole said something decent when he declared it should be outlawed. Honestly, how have they not have a calvacade of wrestlers show up, beat Orton into submission and pay him back for every punt he's committed. There's a way for WWE to show it cares about headshots. If you purposely take someone out, then you're fair game.

Also, I felt the tease leading up to the punt dragged on a bit. Maybe it's just because I don't much care for Orton but they could have done that faster.

I also enjoyed this rumble better than the Royal Rumble itself. I thought the Royal Rumble was pretty disappointing this year. I wish Morrison was given more time in the Royal Rumble. He could have made it more interesting just like he did with the raw rumble. I was hoping that Morrison would win the Royal rumble to set up miz/Morrison at mania. I'm still hoping that it will happen if Morrison can win elimination chamber. Morrison seems to steal the show in every match he is in. I think he needs to be in the title picture to at least make the matches more entertaining. Working with the miz would also make him more comfortable on the mic, I believe. And if that were to happen, a punk, orton, cena triple threat would make for a good match as well.

As for undertaker, I think wade Barrett would be a good opponent because the Barrett led nexus helped bury him alive and also Barrett could use the corre at ringside to make him a legit threat to end the streak. I could also see the HHH and sheamus rematch. I also hope that they do
not do away with money in the bank at
mania. I don't think del rio is ready to main event mania and I don't think it will get buys unless wwe makes it interesting somehow.
Anyway, that's just some if my recent thoughts. Hopefully 2011 will be Morrisons break out year. Hes overdue for a world title.

Does anyone think that the WWE is setting up Lawler to celebrate his retirement from the company? It seems like it is the case. Let him have his time in the sun come Wrestlemania and then he takes off - That's just the impression I'm getting. It seems rather odd to just NOW give him a push after so many legitimate years in the industry as RAW's main commentator.

I'm really impressed with Orton's skills in the ring. He is one the most talented guys on the WWE roster and the way he pulls off the RKO - amazing. The guy is truly amazing.

I hope Wade Barrett and The CORRE bring some entertainment to "Smackdown," the same way Barrett and Co. did on RAW. I honestly thought that Barrett was the breakout star last year, coming off his NXT win. He's not only great on the mic, but he's great in the ring as well. Why they "downgraded" him to Smackdown is beyond me.

"The dance contest was the most embarrasing thing I have ever seen WWE do."

Lucky you, because even though it was embarassing, there've been far more embarassing things - maybe Kevin can do a list about it sometime. The Katie Vick storyline is a strong contender. The Gobbledygooker from the 90 Survivor Series is another, and then you have his (Hector Guerrero) nephew (Chavo Jr.) continuing the tradition recently with Swagger's silly mascot.

E....the link you provided is a scanned image of an alleged article. It has been post on several websites, but is not found on the NY Daily News. I live in NY and get that paper everyday. There is no reporter named King Jordan that reports for this paper. They have one wrestling reporter and he writes under the name "The Slammer". They do not have two. My point wasn't that this image didn't exist, just that it is not from the NY Daily News, which means it is either fake, or mistaken as having come from the NY Daily News. I find it weird that noboday can post the actual link to it's source data though.

Don't take my commentary as proof that Sting hasn't or won't sign, just that the article should be taken with a grain of salt.

Thanks.

Jerry Lawler will be cheated out of the title at Elimination Chamber. Then, he will earn a spot in the Money In The Bank match (defeating Alex Riley?) through which he *could* earn another title match at his own discretion.

Plus, King & Cole can build that match in every segment leading up to WM27 so it will feel a little different than just "another MITB."

In the match, King will have a couple creative spots where it appears as though he will in fact retrieve the briefcase (his forte was always his cagey method of seeking the right opportunity, so that would be very easy for him to do) but all for naught and someone else (Dolph Ziggler?) wins the match.

Thinking I agree with the idea that Orton SHOULD NOT have faced The Miz for the strap at the Rumble. Having him lose the match only to end up in the Rumble anyway was senseless. As we the audience lose a key guy in the Rumble build up.
Although John Morrison was fantastic in the Rumble and in my opinion had the best spots. So putting him against Miz against at the ppv would have wasted those spots in the Rumble.
Guess that leaves us with Lawler as Miz's Rumble opponent. Possibly give Orton his title match at Chamber?
Regardless I loved both the Royal Rumble and Raw Rumble matches. January is my personal favorite month on the wrestling calender.

@Anthony Morgan....dude I just couldn't get my fingers to type the word Goo...Goob....led.....nope, no luck. It might lock up my comp.

For WWE wanting to PG, the bellas choice of attire was poor. considering that wardrobe malfunctions were bound to happen.........and they did.

Hmmm... Doesn't everyone who gets a punt take some time off? Is something happening to Husky Harris? Hope not
