WWE Raw: Finally, The Rock has come back ... to host WrestleMania XXVII
WrestleMania XXVII just got a whole lot more electrifying.
It was not all that surprising when Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was revealed on Raw Monday night as the guest host for WrestleMania XXVII, but even though a lot of fans expected it, the moment he walked on stage was incredibly dramatic nonetheless.
The Rock, making his first appearance in a WWE ring since 2004, looked as if he had never left. “The Great One” slipped into character with the greatest of ease, as he rattled off all of his trade mark catch phrases and displayed his distinct mannerisms.

Rock, with his head completely shaved and sporting a heavily muscled physique, not only proved that he can still captivate an audience like very few – if any – ever have in the history of the business, but he also showed that when someone of his magnitude shows up, standard restrictions no longer apply.
He laid the smack down on WWE’s PG rating by cursing numerous times (he was bleeped only on the first instance), and he didn’t conclude his promo until 20 minutes after the hour – a good 12-15 minutes later than Raw usually signs off.
Rock certainly had some interesting things to say. He noted that he was not hosting WrestleMania for the money or because he had a movie to promote, he was doing it because of the fans. Then he delivered the line that stopped everyone in their tracks: “I give you my word that I am never, ever going away.”
There’s no way Rock is returning fulltime to WWE, so my guess is that he meant that he will come back for occasional appearances and not seem so distant from the company. As far as donning the tights, Rock has made it clear on numerous occasions that he has wrestled his final match, and I do believe that is the case, although I suppose anything is possible.
People are already speculating that Rock is going to wrestle John Cena at WrestleMania because he took some verbal jobs at Cena Monday night. I think it’s far more likely that Cena will face Miz for the WWE title, with Rock as the special referee. Miz was the only other wrestler Rock mentioned by name during his promo.
Rock, Cena and Miz all in the ring together on the grand stage sure sounds like a WrestleMania moment to me.
Other thoughts on Monday’s show:
This was a strong episode overall that featured some good matches, the best of which was an outstanding non-title match between WWE champion The Miz and Daniel Bryan. ...
It was a nice swerve when a woman got out of the limousine that supposedly had the mystery WrestleMania guest host inside. I wonder if we will ever find out who that was. ...
The heat on Michael Cole when he interrupted The Rock’s promo was Vickie Guerrero-like. ...
The “2-21-11” video left no doubt that it has to do with The Undertaker’s return, as “The Dead Man” was seen inside the creepy house. However, it appeared as if there was another dark figure standing outside the house, so I suppose there is still some reason to hold out hope that Sting is involved. ...
The plot thickened in regard to the world heavyweight title controversy. Edge showed up with the belt, but Guerrero came out to announce that Dolph Ziggler would be officially crowned as the new champion on Smackdown Friday night. She also said that she has proof that Edge was the person behind the attack on Smackdown general manager Teddy Long. ...
Miz’s neckbreaker off the apron that sent Bryan headfirst to the floor was a potentially dangerous spot, but it looked great. ...
I like how WWE handled the passing of Jerry Lawler’s mother. Cole, out of character, gave viewers the news early in the show and said that’s why Lawler was not there. Miz referenced the death in his promo, but I don’t think the way he did it crossed the line. He offered his condolences, but then immediately said that he didn’t want Lawler to use it as an excuse when he loses at the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view Sunday. ...
The Cena-CM Punk match was entertaining. It was nice to see Punk get the pinfall victory (even if it was by dubious means). ...
The Randy Orton-Sheamus match was decent. Sheamus got in his share of offense before losing. The post-match brawl, which involved all of the participants in the Raw Elimination Chamber match and ended with Orton and Cena standing tall in the ring, was good. ...
John Morrison showed really good intensity and aggressiveness during the tag team match in which he and R-Truth defeated Michael McGillicutty and David Otunga. ...
When Alex Riley was doing commentary on the Miz-Bryan match, I had to laugh when he said, “Can I sports entertain and commentate?” God forbid he would have said “wrestle” instead of “sports entertain.” ...
Josh Matthews legitimately seemed surprised/ticked off when Riley and Cole bumped him in the face while they were shaking hands. ...
Michael Tarver is still hanging around backstage (he was visible when Miz and Riley were making their way to the ring). ...
I liked the finish to the WWE Divas title match between champion Eve Torres and Natalya, as Torres countered Natalya’s cradle attempt by shifting her weight and scoring the pin. It wasn’t spectacular, but it looked realistic. ...
I laughed out loud when Hornswoggle came from under the ring to join The Great Khali Kiss Cam segment and Cole said, “Ugh, just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse.” ...
I also thought it was funny when Maryse went to kiss Ted DiBiase Jr. during the segment, but at the last second she put her hand in front of her face, turned around and planted one on astonished Yoshi Tatsu. William Regal giving Zack Ryder a peck on the cheek, and Ziggler looking a little grossed out when Guerrero grabbed him and kissed him was amusing as well. ...
Hornswoggle – who despite his diminutive size is actually an adult – hitting on the 13-year-old actress from Triple H’s new movie, “The Chaperone,” was creepy. Where’s Chris Hansen when you need him?

He's baaaaaack!!
Outstanding entrance by the Rock, and kudos to McMahon for bringing him back. Anyone other than Rock as host would have been a huge letdown. And I'm glad you noticed his size, too- I couldn't believe how much larger he was than in years past. His arms looked like Hogan's circa 1984!
Fabulous promo, and loved the fact that he's calling out Cena. Johnny C, my dear, the bar has been raised, and likely to a level that you cannot reach.

The crowd pop that the Rock got last night, still gives me chills today. I've literally watched his entrance video a hundred times.
Of course I'm dreaming here, but wouldn't it be something to see John Cena vs. The Rock? Just imagine the promos these guys would have. It would be fabulous.
My question is, how long can we expect him to be "back" and will we see him again before wrestlemania? Any chance that with Stone Cold maybe making an appearance before Tough Enough starts that we could see the Rattlesnake and the Great One meet in the squared circle again?
Ahh, so many questions I have after that. But what an amazing night for the WWE and the WWE Universe.

When the Rock was putting the Smackdown on Cena, I thought this was going to lead to a heel turn for Cena. I knew he wouldn't come out and interupt Rock but, I still think that, somehow, at Wrestlemania, Cena will turn on Rock and become a heel. I know that turning the company's biggest face is a big gamble but, it worked for Hogan.
BTW, how long before they change the name to "sportsentertainmentmania."

Why did they end the show with The Rock? If they opened Raw with Rock, wouldn't that have kept more viewers in the sense that they would be waiting for Cena to respond or just that they would be excited about wrestling again?
Posted by: Sean | February 15, 2011 6:47 PM
Hey Kev, not sure if you'd heard or seen anything about this, but there is some speculation that it was indeed not Undertaker in the promo. If you watch it over again and pause it when it shows the close up of his chest and face, it really doesn't look like his chin or facial hair at all. Actually looks more like HBK or Triple H.
Seems possible right? HHH vs Taker at WM with HBK as ref? DX playing mind games with the Undertaker? Think its possible?
Posted by: Cody Fryman | February 15, 2011 6:51 PM
I agree with PWInsider, Rock will lay the smack down on Cole and will put Cena over. I also don't think it's a coincidence that FF5 is coming out the same time as his Wrestlemania appearance despite his claims otherwise. I also thought his promo was a little disappointing but that's just me.
Posted by: eric | February 15, 2011 7:06 PM
It was great to see the Rock back and told Cole to shut his mouth was priceless it like he was about to cry i wonder if mystery women was miss HHH or a famous actress

What looked to be an underwhelming card for Wrestlemania, is now shaping up to be possibly one of the best ever. Once I saw The Rock was the guest host, I bought my tickets, and I'm GOIN' TO WRESTLEMANIA!!!! And I can't wait to see The Rock lay the smack down on alllllll their candy a*****!!!!!

The ending of the divas title match looked botched to me. It didn't look smooth at all.
RESPONSE FROM KE: It didn't look smooth. Perhaps that wasn't by design, but to me, the fact that it looked like a struggle made it look more like a real athletic competition.

While The Rock's return was everything it was expected to be, there are some real dangers with it. First, in addition to demolishing the face of the company in every way imaginable, he made the entire roster (Raw and SD) seem inconsequential by comparison. It's akin to someone who has been eating spam everyday getting a taste of filet mignon. Last night was akin to seeing Michael Jordan in his NBA prime joining a middle school basketball team. Clearly The Rock won't be back full-time or wrestling, so when he ultimately leaves, viewers will be back to eating spam but craving filet mignon. This particular applies to Cena as the face of the company, as he will be completely outclassed if he's every in a promo with The Rock. I'm not sure the short-term benefit (an actual buzz for WM 27) actually is worth the potential long-term issues.
As far as the show itself, even without Rock's promo, it was a quality show. I hope the company noticed how over Daniel Bryan is when allowed to actually wrestle. Instead of putting him in stupid skits with the Bellas, he should be put on the Chris Benoit (yes I know, he who should not be spoken of) plan and just let him get over by putting on 12-15 minute classics every week. Although Cena's opening promo can only be described as generic, his match with CM Punk was good. JoMo continues to make strides as he builds momentum towards becoming a solid main-eventer.
For as epic as the pop Rock got, the heat on Cole and Vickie Guerrero was just as mindboggling. For all the scorn Cole gets (mostly for not being Jim Ross), he's really come into his own as a smarmy heel announcer. He genuinely cracks me up at least once a week.
All of the Undertaker conspiracy theorists got more fuel with the image of a second person in the video. To me, even if they had Sting, it would make no sense to burn that match at WM when everyone knows that Taker is never losing there. That's probably the biggest match the company could put on short of Rock/Cena (which probably will never happen), if it does happen, there should be actual suspense involved. It would make more sense to have it be someone like a returning Triple H attempting to get revenge on Taker for 'retiring' HBK.

I really hope there were a lot of people (Vince included) who were watchng The Rock from the back. That promo was an absolute clinic. With 4Q losses of 28%, I think the PG Era has to be losing some of it's appeal. I've always thought there is a happy middle ground between Attitude Era and PG. I think Rock showed his PG-13 promo generates a lot more buzz than that bowl of Fruity Pebbles John Cena does. It was also a nice touch to have the announcers silent during the whole thing.
It will be interesting to see how that works out. I still think this is the opportunity to turn Cena heel. You can't just laugh off getting ripped like that, but you can't defend yourself against one of the most over men ever either.
Rock is also my dark horse candidate for Raw GM. It could keep him "around," but he wouldn't have to be there every week. Ratings take a dip, call him up. Things seem OK, cue the email. I think it would be great to have Cole be the one who groans when the email sound goes off and that he'd be under orders to read it as always with the same catch phrases.
Wishful thinking though I'm sure.
Anyway, I liked the episode a lot and next week's payoff for the Undertaker should be an awesome follow up. I'm biased as a Taker mark though. The vignettes before his returns sure have come a long way from the fake graveyards and a fog machine.
It was also nice to see Jericho's book get a plug. If WWE did loosen the reigns a bit more, a returning Jericho could really thrive.
Lastly, Sheamus still looks a lot like the Oregon mascot if they had an Irish background. Seriously, the ring on front of his cape looks like the O on their helmets.

The guy in the house is Triple H. Outside is 'Taker.
EIther way they've done a nice job with the videos.

Kev all I can say is The Rocks segment reminded me of what we are missing in the wwe nowadays I mean he even hinted at it in his jab at John Cena going from Austin 3:16 and The Rock to "you cant see me" When was the last time you saw a segment in the ring with no wrestling and was totally and utterly entertained and I know less talking and more wrestling is a big deal to you Kev so how do we fix it I need that energy of the old WWE don't you??
Posted by: Bj | February 15, 2011 7:59 PM
The first previews of the WWE All-Stars video game showed Rock vs. Cena! It all makes sense now!
Posted by: Matthew | February 15, 2011 8:02 PM
Wow.
That was electrifying.
The Rock has come back...to the WWE.
How unbelievable was the pop he got. Sensational.
Hey Kev, just a thought. Do you think it's possible the Great One infact does wrestle Cena, while Miz takes on John Morrison for the WWE Title? We've all seen how strong Morrison has been booked in the past few months.

the rock rocks
Posted by: daniel | February 15, 2011 8:25 PM
The Rock has actually been in a WWE ring since 2004's Mania if I'm not mistaken. He did some stuff with Foley against La Resistance, the 2004 Diva Search, and spots with Eugene. No wrestling though, just entertaining.
Awful job again by Vickie as her laugh was clearly overacting. And the heat on Cole was Vickie like, as in go away and take XPac, Bubba the Love Sponge, and the Nasty Boys with you. Cole was actually good when he was paired with Tazz and JBL as he plays the dork role well.
RESPONSE FROM KE: You are right about those Rock appearances. I stand corrected and have fixed it. Thanks!
Posted by: Eric | February 15, 2011 8:46 PM
That Bryan vs Miz match was really good but honestly I like Cole but I thought he was annoying during the Miz vs Bryan match not a good annoying. It was too much when he called Bryan a boring wrestler especially the timing of it was a pretty exciting sequence of moves Bryan was pulling off.
Ok minor complaint haha RAW was really good this week! And not just cuz of the Rock either it was really good :).
Posted by: cowboysmb3dw28 | February 15, 2011 9:11 PM
Interesting that you noticed the dark figure outside of the house in the final 2-21-2011. That is in the back of my mind. If it were somehow Sting this Mania is going to have some major star power. The Rock was good but it's very short term.

Hey Kev,
I was actually in attendance last night at the Honda Center in Anaheim. Let me tell you, I was sitting right by the ramp and got the opportunity to speak with ref Charles Robinson and some of the camera men too. It was a very nostalgic moment to say the least. When The Rock came out all of the backstage producers and crew workers came out to see the rock's in ring return in person. All the workers and ushers at the Honda Center were visibly bored and "dead" throughout the night until the Great One came out. Suddenly they all turned around and were paying attention LOL. Even the camera man filming The Rock inside the ring was giggling when Rock mocked Cena and his "you can't see me" catchphrase and hand gesture. Rocks' speech was heartfelt. I'm also glad he acknowledged that Cena had talked trash about him in the past for not genuinely loving the company and not returning for a sporadic appearance, etc. It's funny because it was WWE who did not want to renew Rock's contract back in 2005. Well guess what The Rock is Back hahaha! I am aware that you've had experience working backstage in WCW. Just wondering Kev, have you ever crossed paths with Brahma bull ever? if so, how was he like in person?
RESPONSE FROM KE: I've interviewed Rock in person on four occasions (twice while he was in WWE and twice while he was promoting his movies). One of the nicest, most gracious guys I've ever dealt with.

"With 4Q losses of 28%, I think the PG Era has to be losing some of it's appeal."
PPVs were down 23%. However, the company was profitable in the quarter, as they have been every single quarter for years. WWE's profit overall the last few years went like this:
2007: $52 million
2008: $45 million
2009: $50 million
2010: $53 million

That Rock promo @ the end of Raw was one of the most epic segments the WWE has had in many years. In fact, while I don't think PG WWE is going anywhere, I DO think that the Rock's comeback promo singlehandedly proved what Anti-Cena people have been saying for the better part of 7 years. Compare The Rock's promo at the end of the show to John Cena's promo at the top of the same program. Be honest...they're not even in the same orbit. The irony is that Cena and Rock are roughly comparable in the ring. The difference is that The Rock has been able to captivate and connect with fanbases in a way that Cena hasn't...or at least, hasn't consistently. That Cena promo was stale, rambling, unfunny and most of all...LAZY. No effort. No intensity. Cena's character and promos are lazy... and it is perhaps the biggest reason hardcore/IWC fans can't stand him. The Rock not only buried Cena so far down they're still looking for him somewhere in the Earth's core, but he showed EVERYONE what greatness looks and sounds like. It doesn't necessarily have to involve cursing or mature-themed catchphrases. It's about connecting performer with audience. Just because Cena is the "face of the company" doesn't mean he's great. The Rock coming back showed everyone why the PG/Cena Era is missing that one element that made the Austin/Rock/Attitude Era something special: The ability to get an entire fanbase on their feet, electricity flowing through their bodies, wondering if tonight's the night they'll see or hear something they've never experienced before, that one moment they can all be excited and united...The Rock just made people remember what's missing.
Cena's move.

So at Wrestlemania you have...
1)The Rock hosting
2)HBK inducted in the HOF
3)Either HHH vs Taker in a career threatening match with HBK as a referee or possibly Taker vs Sting
4)Miz in a title match with Cena possibly refereed by the Rock
5) Stone Cold probably promoting Tough Enough
COUNT ME IN!

I was in the audience for last night's RAW as well. It was my first RAW taping since the mid-90s and it was well-worth the wait. I honestly didn't expect the Rock to come out as the guest host of Wrestlemania, but once his entrance music came on, I literally jumped for joy. Words cannot describe the audience's reaction. My ears are still ringing from it.
Here's a great shot I took of The People's Champ in the ring last night (taken three rows from ringside): http://twitpic.com/408o7k
Amazing night.

The pop for The Rock was unreal. Only three men in the history of wrestling ever got something like that. You can't bottle it, buy it, or put it on a T-shirt; it's something innate. Unreal.

"The Rock, making his first appearance in a WWE ring since his final match at WrestleMania XX in 2004, looked as if he had never left."
Rock's last appearance in a WWE ring was actually on an episode of RAW that appeared in August of 04', during the now defunct diva search competition segment. I remember this distinctly because I had completely stopped watching wrestling after 2000 and started watching again in 2004, shortly after WrestleMania. Because of that, as far as wrestling goes, 2004 serves as a very memorable year for me.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rgUwgeXEEw&feature=related
Moral of the story: don't give the Rock any segments in which he has to be surrounded by a bunch of divas. He may not show up for another 7 years, and we don't want that. Haha! :D I love the Rock! So glad he's back, talking the talk like no one else can!
Posted by: Tonetare | February 15, 2011 11:22 PM
Thank you USA network for giving the Rock the extra time. Much better than what they would have been showing anyway. Even my girlfriend, who doesn't know wrestling from a hole in the ground, watched it. She asked me "Isn't that the guy who was in the Get Smart movie?" I told here yes it was. She said he was much funnier as a wrestler. The Rock's promo really made me wish the "old" days would come back and get rid of this PG garbage. And take Cena to the trash bin when you leave, thank you.

Magnificent Mark you stole my thunder!! I was thinking exactly the same thing!!!
Also--when A-Ri called Bryan an insomniac's dream, that sounded funny since an insomniac doesn't sleep and since can't have a dream!

The Rock was AMAZING! That's how you cut a promo! The guys of today have NOTHING on the guys from the mid/late 90s & early 2000s

Truly amazing!
Nothing more needs to be said.
Posted by: Are | February 16, 2011 1:34 AM
So Kev,
What do you think the odds are that the Rock's return and involvement with Cena might give WWE the opportunity to pull the heel turn for Cena?
Cena's the #1 guy in WWE for sure, but Rock's way bigger, so the audience would likely side with him if Cena was to start acting heel-ish.
I could picture them having the angle based off how they'll never love Cena as much as the Rock, and it finally making Cena snap.
Thoughts?

It was a huge moment for me to see The Rock back in WWE, but saddended me when i realised that its 6/7 years since he left...and the people WWE are marketing too probably weren't even born when he was at his most electrifying. Back to TV14 and that pop would have shown on the richter scale
Posted by: Andy | February 16, 2011 3:03 AM
While I totally agree with most of the comments about the great one, but I feel most of you are unfair to Cena's promo ability. The fact that he has to work under PG-13 environment doesn't help. While I am totally admire Rock but I think if Cena disappears for 7 years and if he makes a comeback, he'll also get a huge pop, and I am not dissing Rock. I am really happy for him how he chased his dreams and is a very successful actor today. But I think Cena can cut awesome promos as well, if he is allowed to work in TV-14 environment.
Posted by: Kunal | February 16, 2011 4:14 AM
I literally jumped out of my seat and screamed when The Rock's music hit, as if my soccer team had just scored.
However, after reading all these comments i feel i have to defend Cena a tad. It's not Cena's fault his era is reigning in the same time as the PG. Look at Cena a few weeks back when he got 'fined' for saying 'ass,' that was a terrific, intense and believable promo, if he came out and broke the rules every week like Rock would, then maybe he wouldn't have so many haters. That said, i was so excited when Rock talked down Cena. Haha!
Posted by: Bryan | February 16, 2011 5:51 AM
Kev,
Not sure you noticed but they stopped beeping the Rock only after they had gone past there scheduled 11:05 time slot.
Posted by: Jmac | February 16, 2011 6:57 AM
I was here in PR and I was watching Raw starting at 10:00. When they started announcing the Wrestlemania host I started to shiver in anticipation of who it might be. Then...the lights went out. "Oh man...not next week!" (Because you know how they love to go bait-n-switch lately) Then the whole titantron stage started to light up. "Oh yeah, countdown? Wait a couple of years, Jericho." And after a brief silence...
IF YA SMELL...WHAT THE ROCK...IS COOKIN'
Thank you Rock for not letting me sleep that night. He proved to be the most electrifying man in all of entertainment. I mean, c'mon, my whole body was shuddering and sweating during the entire promo!
Oh, and if this serves as an interesting fact...the only film he's working on right now is Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, with no films scheduled afterwards. Probably what Rock is planning is to finish all filming before Mania so that, if he ever wrestles, he shouldn't be worried about not taking bumps since no movie has been planned ahead.
So a Cena vs. Rock is entirely possible. Never say never...
Posted by: JETZexc | February 16, 2011 8:20 AM
Finally...watching RAW was not a waste of 2 hours! Totlly buying my first Mania in 6 years!
Posted by: Danny | February 16, 2011 8:35 AM
The Rock and Michael Cole back and forth was hilarious. Seems like WWE is getting less PG every week, what with Cena saying ass a few weeks ago, and now The Rock is saying candy ass and 'sonbitch'
Righteous.

Normally I flip the channel during Divas matches, but I watched this one. The commentators (both "heel" Cole and Matthews) ripping on Natalya was ridiculous.
I know you've touched on it before, but it is really dumb.

In NY, they showed a promo for HHH returning for a MSG house show against Sheamus - March 19th. I'm guessing HHH will be on TV before then.
Also, for a brief minute, I thought the Stinger was coming out instead of the rock - due to the eerie noise and titantron.
Posted by: Nicky 2 Sticky | February 16, 2011 9:39 AM
chris,
If WWE was still private, that's great news. A shame it's not. WWE stock is trending near it's 52 week low, which is 2/3 or the 52 week high. $50 Million in revenues does nothing to offset losing $500 Million in stock value in just one year.
It's market cap is $903MM now and it was $1.4B this time last year.
The PG move was supposed to bolster the bottom line, but that bottom line is stone cold in all the wrong ways.

WoW! That was the best moment on Raw in the last 5 years.Ive been watching wrestling for 30 years now and the Rocks pop goes down as one of the biggest Ive ever seen. For 5 years now we have had the Cena/pg era forced down our throat and The Rock said what all of us been thinking anyways.I was starting a save us Rocky and a thankyou Rocky chant in my living room. I also believe The Rock can start a wresling boom just by him making some occasional appearances.Anyways WRESLEMANIA just got alot more interesting!

Great to see The Rock back in the WWE. I must say his return was really overdue and Vince had to resort to him to try and get some prestige back to the WWE and to Wrestlemania in particular especially with HBK gone now...Here's what I see happening @ The Main Event of WM27. John Cena vs The Miz for the WWE title with The people's champ as Special guest referee. Cena will shock the WWE universe by turning heel with the help of a certan Michael Cole...I can see Cena initially getting his frustration out @ The Miz and later on shocking the world by knocking The Rock out with some form of help from Michael Cole who will then step in as the referee trying to help Cena pin but The Miz will kick out and fight on and with the help of The Rock getting up from his KO The Miz will pin Cena and keep the title and turn face in the process and also get his WM moment. This will solidify The Miz as a genuine WWE champion and will give the fans what they've been wanting to see for a long time i.e. The Rock getting back @ Cena. Cena turning heel could only refresh his gimmick and a door will be left open for the feud of 2011 between Raw GM The Rock/WWE champion The Miz vs John Cena/Michael Cole considering the fact The Rock wants to hang around in some form post WM. I can't see Cena winning the main event of a WM hosted by the Rock and I think this is the most they can do about it.The Miz can only grow bigger hanging around The Rock. Your comments are welcome...

I had to watch the return on youtube, but got goosebumps when I saw The Rock come out. They don't make wrestlers who can cut a promo like him anymore.
I'm glad he moved on from wrestling though - he left before people could get too tired of him and is better off for it...
Posted by: Ted | February 16, 2011 11:52 AM
What I am looking really forward to, perhaps even more so than the elimination chamber ppv, is that Rock insulted the Miz and Cena....the next few weeks up to Wrestlemani should have some awesome promos between the 3 of them. Assuming the Rock will be there the next few weeks

Vince McMahon is the smartest business man alive.
Bringing back The Rock did 3 things: 1) Got the mainstream media talking about his product again. 2) Brings back interest from wrestling fans that may have been turned off from the product since the 90s and 3) Introduces probably the biggest name in the business to a new generation of fans, especially people like me who grew up with The Rock and now have kids of my own to enjoy wrestling with.
Add to the talk of Sting potentially coming to the WWE for his final curtian call and McMahon swindling Kevin Nash and Booker T away from TNA, he continues to target an audience that may have left and handicaps his rival.
I get that the WWE has gone family friendly, which is one of the reason I rarely watch the WWE anymore. There are a few charachters I get into, such as Randy Orton, but have no interest in The Miz, for example. It' literally bores me to tears.
TNA is good, but it's like watching a low-rent version of WCW and in no way up to that standard. Still, some of the characters are much more intriguing. And they have The Beautiful People!

My brother invited me to his place (about 1.5 hours away) for Wrestlemania. After the rock finished I got a text that said "Well now you have to come!"

So at Wrestlemania you have...
1)The Rock hosting
2)HBK inducted in the HOF
3)Either HHH vs Taker in a career threatening match with HBK as a referee or possibly Taker vs Sting
4)Miz in a title match with Cena possibly refereed by the Rock
5) Stone Cold probably promoting Tough Enough
COUNT ME IN!
Dont forget, you also have Jerry the King Lawler!

Like others, I think this is a great way to turn Cena heel. I think it's called a curtain moment, when everyone backstage watches a perfomer from behind the curtain. This was certainly a curtain moment.

The Rock is the reason I began watching the WWE in the first place. Rock, Mankind, Stone Cold - they were charismatic and compelling performers. Men like that don't come into wrestling very often - that's why they are so amazing.
To see The Rock back in a WWE ring, totally made my night. I could have watched him for another hour.
Made me realize how bland the show has become and why I often don't watch.
I'll be watching now.

"if WWE was still private, that's great news. A shame it's not. WWE stock is trending near it's 52 week low, which is 2/3 or the 52 week high. $50 Million in revenues does nothing to offset losing $500 Million in stock value in just one year."
The $50 million in 2009 and $53 million in 2010 figures that I posted were WWE's PROFITS those years, not the revenue. Revenue for those two years was $475 million and $477 million.

Did anyone else roll their eyes when Cena said his 'rock solid' guess was Cole. I mean, seriously, was that necessary? Maybe he was trying to ruin the Rock's moment?!?!

To those who are defending Cena...I get it. In fact, I don't hate Cena. I have a lot of respect for John Cena the person, worker and talent. In fact, that's what makes it worse. Because John Cena does have talent. Granted, it's not on the same level of Rock, Austin, HBK, Jericho, etc...but it's there. He originally got over BECAUSE of his mic work. His raps and promos were very good and while the concept of "the white rapping wrestler" wasn't going to last forever, I think the reaction by fans to that Cena incarnation is a huge reason Cena is today the face of the company. I also fully realize that PG places certain restrictions on the talent and their abilities to "improvise."
But I think critics' point about Cena is that...he's not PG. He's G. He is the living embodiment of what would have happened if Rocky Maivia had continued on and been propelled into the main event and been a face of the company for a 6-7 year period. The differnce is that Rocky turned into The Rock...not the other way around. Randy Orton, The Miz, Chris Jericho, Edge, Morrison, and others have similarly worked within the confines of PG. But none of them get the grief that Cena gets...because they mix it up or can get it done in the ring. At any time they may have slipped into a period of stagnation or staleness...but I wouldn't say it lasted long. Randy Orton punts people in the head and keeps them out of action for months for heaven's sake. Edge threw Paul Bearer off a ledge, and HE WAS THE GOOD GUY. Morrison has capitalized on the rise of "parkour" to define his character mostly with in-ring action. People either love or hate The MIz...not a lot of 'meh' because he FORCES you to love or hate him with an intense character and intensely (awesome or annoying depending on where you come out on him) promo style. John Cena hasn't done...or can't do...any of that. Whether he has let Vince, HHH and creative do it TO HIM or if he's complacent or content enough where his life, career and character are to keep it that way doesn't really matter. Cena is predictable and stale and it's been going on for FAR too long. And in wrestling...that's not a good thing to be for any extended length of time. Just ask Rocky Maivia.

chris,
The value of the company has dropped $500 Million in one year. The profits don't matter because the owners don't make money on the PROFITS they make money on the STOCK PRICE when they eventually sell.
A lot of those profits come from runing more events each year and doing more overseas and making more cheap, but profitable movies, and new Legends toys. Ratings still suck though and there comes a point where you can't squeeze more juice out of an old orange.
WWE's stock is in trouble, which was my whole point. If you make $50 million when you're expected to earn $60 million, you failed. It's a cut throat world. Watch CNBC, CEO's get fired for missing expectations all the time, companies face hostile takeovers when they underperform.
Read the reasons in this link on why CEO's get fired and see how many of them apply to Vince. "Ignoring Customers" and "Denying Reality?" Sounds about right. Vince has the cards stacked so he's obviously not getting fired, but it doesn't mean he's doing a good job as CEO.

My concern is this, if WWE is trending down with John Cena, et al, what happens when he and Orton get injured again? What about when Taker and HHH retire? Who's left? No one who started out in this PG Era is doing anything near the level of a Cena let alone The Rock or Stone Cold. In a couple years, who will even know who those guys are? If the target demo is under 13, they were 3 when WCW folded. They wouldn't even know Sting if he debuted on Monday unless they saw TNA.
The PG Era has to end at some point out of necessity. The business will need to change to survive and my point was that you might as well do it now as opposed to wait until it's too late to matter.

I usually dvr Raw and Smackdown, watch them and then delete them. But with the GREAT ONE returning , this episode just might be kept.
If ya SMELLLLLLLLLLLLLLALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALA...what the MIKE is COOKIN!!! ( raises people eye brow )

Looks like I started watching RAW again at the exact right time. This was the second episode I've seen since HBK retired. And what an awesome treat.

James C, you seem to dislike the PG rating and think it's killing WWE That's fine if that's what you want to believe. But it's not affecting business like you think. The financial reports are on the Internet to be seen by anyone and show that WWE's poorest performing years since the end of the 1998-2001 wrestling boom were 2002-2004, not 2005-2007 and not 2008-2010.

People must remember that the WWE/WWF/Etc. IS and ALWAYS HAS BEEN FOR ENTERTAINMENT FOR THE PUBLIC--IF IT WAS REAL,NOT STAGED--MANY OF THE WRESTLERS WOULD END -UP AS DISABLED FOR LIFE,THOUGH SOME DO HAVE PERSONAL GRUDGES THAT DOES THAT-SINCE I FIRST ATTENDED IN 1976 IN KC, MO.-AND REAL BLOOD DID FLOW.--I AM DISABLED IN A WHEELCHAIR SO I CANT ATTEND ANYMORE TO WATCH THIS "ENTERTAINMENT" ,BUT AT TIMES IT DOES GET " BORING "-ESPECIALLY MICHAEL COLE-WHICH SHOULD BE FIRED OR GET HIS -ASS WHIPPED BY JERRY-THE KING- LAWLER-INSTEAD OF BEING A CHICKEN HIDING BEHIND OTHERS--TO SHUT HIS MOUTH !!!
