TNA Impact: Robert Roode shines on the stick

When you talk about the most underrated guys in the business, there are several names that come to mind, but perhaps the one at the top of that list is Robert Roode.

I continue to find it astounding that Roode has never been given a major singles push. Not only is he talented worker, but he’s also money on the mic. The latter was evident on Thursday night’s episode of TNA Impact.

After Jeff Jarrett called out Fortune and verbally assaulted them, Roode ripped the microphone away from him and cut an intense promo, saying how the members of Fortune built TNA and they were tired of being overlooked while seeing the “washed-up has-beens who came and left” being treated like “saviors.”

TNA overdoes the “worked shoot” promos, but this one was definitely a home run. Roode also did a nice job during a backstage segment with Kurt Angle.

I think Beer Money is a fantastic tag team, but it will be a real shame if Roode never gets an opportunity to fulfill his potential as a singles star.

Other thoughts on Thursday’s show:

The match in which Angle and A.J. Styles defeated Jarrett and Jeff Hardy was entertaining and certainly had a heavy dose of star power. To build anticipation for the Jarrett-Angle match at Sunday’s Against All Odds pay-per-view, Jarrett played chicken heel and avoided any physical contact with Angle at all costs. After the match, Jarrett sneak-attacked Angle and laid him out with a low blow and The Stroke. ...

The stipulation for the Jarrett-Angle match is that if Angle wins, he gets custody of the two kids he fathered with Karen, and if Jarrett wins, Angle has to walk Karen down the aisle and give her away when the Jarretts renew their wedding vows. I know some people are hammering TNA for involving two small kids in this story line and also for how nonsensical it is for custody of the children to be determined by the results of a wrestling match, but it’s not like WWE hasn’t done the same thing (custody of Rey Mysterio’s son was on the line in Mysterio’s match with Eddie Guerrero back in 2005). ...

Karen Jarrett did a nice job on the mic during the Jarrett-Angle contract signing, and I also thought her reaction to Jeff putting custody of the kids on the line (she wasn’t at all pleased) was realistic, even if the stipulation isn’t. ...

TNA is doing a good job of building intrigue as to which side Ric Flair is going to be on in the Fortune-Immortal feud. Personally, I’d like to see Flair go babyface and stick with Fortune. ...

The returning Hernandez is a good addition to Immortal. His interference caused Matt Morgan to lose to TNA world champion Mr. Anderson in a title bout. Hernandez’s actions made sense since Morgan turned on him when they were tag team partners and put him out with an injury. However, another feud with Hernandez seems like a significant step back for Morgan, who has been in the main event on the past three pay-per-views. ...

I was scratching my head as to why TNA would have Bully Ray get put through a table by Devon three days before the pay-per-view, as fans got to see Ray gets his comeuppance for free rather than having to pay to see it. Later in the show, however, it was announced that the street fight at Against All Odds between the two former Team 3D members would now be a handicap match pitting Ray against Devon and his two teenage sons. That’s when my Vince Russo swerve alert went off: I’m predicting that Devon’s sons turn on him and cost him the match. Even if that doesn’t happen, who wants to see Devon’s kids wrestle anyway? A one-on-one street fight sounds more appealing. ,,,

Why is Suicide back? Has anyone ever really cared about this character? For those who don’t know, it’s Christopher Daniels once again playing the role. He’s still under contract to Ring of Honor (ROH), but a deal reportedly was worked out that permits him to wrestle under a mask in TNA. If TNA wants to bring Daniels back as a masked wrestler, why not have him do the entertaining Curry Man gimmick? More importantly, why did TNA ever release Daniels in the first place? ...

Robbie E. won the three-way match over Brian Kendrick and Suicide, so that means the triple threat match at the pay-per-view to determine the No. 1 contender for Kazarian’s X Division title will be between Robbie E., Max Buck and Jeremy Buck. All three are heels, so it might be a challenge to get the crowd to care about who wins that one. ...

What was the point of having an eight-woman tag match when half of the participants never even tagged in? ...

Rosita – the “cousin” of Sarita – looked good in her debut. She won the eight-woman tag match for her team (Rosita, Sarita, Madison Rayne and Tara defeated Mickie James, Angelina Love, Velvet Sky and Winter) when she pinned Sky after hitting a moonsault.

Are you sure Flair is even coming back. After the whole Dublin thing, I wouldn't be surprised if he never shows up in TNA again.

RESPONSE FROM KE: He's coming back. He apologized to the crew the next day and finished out the tour.

Roode is money, and should be main eventing. He would be a great champion as a face or heel. I thought this was a decent show overall. I am still not sure what TNA sees in Anderson. I would love to see the belt back on RVD for a while. I agree that if Flair is back he should stay with Fourtune.

It was kind of funny watching Madison Rayne basically calling Mickie James old. I wonder when Winter and Velvet will turn on Angelina? It is the natural Russon swerve.

The 'custody of the children' stip was ridiculous when WWE did it and it's even moreso now that TNA have done it.

I'm a huge TNA fan but it's beyond why they'd take such an honest, real-life issue like that of Angle/Jarrett and turn it into a cartoon-y, Micky Mouse angle by using ridiculous stipulations that make no sense to anyone, let alone able to be believed by anyone.

I was also pretty disappointed to see Hernandez' return spoiled by a nothing backstage segment with Bischoff.
I know Hernandez isn't the biggest name on the company but the fans like him so i saw it as a wasted opportunity to surprise the fans, even just a little.

Good to see Christopher Daniels back, although like you Eck, i'd rather see it as Curry Man or better still, the Fallen Angel....

Nice recap as usual, Kevin, and right on target with Roode. He is overdue for a singles main event push.
Am I in the minority when I say that TNA is currently more enjoyable for adults than WWE? Is it any coincidence that has happened as Hogan and his cronies faded from the scene and the X-Division got more airtime?
The return of Daniels is fantastic, the return of Suicide is a huge bore. Bad move. Daniels looked as if he forgot he was wearing a mask. He wasn't selling at all. I also had a hard time buying Robbie E. getting a win over the far more talented duo of Daniels and Kendrick. Brian Kendrick may be more under-rated than Roode. Excellent in-ring skills, good charisma and mic skills, and quite entertaining.
Karen Angle, er, Jarrett, is the best non-wrestling heel to hit the scenes in a long time. I say that even though I thoroughly enjoy Vicki Guerrero's schtick. Karen is the one really making this Angle v Jarrett angle shine.

It was good to see Robert Roode shine on impact, and it's about time. There is some real emotion coming out in those promos. It must be hard for Roode to see people like Mr. Anderson just walk into TNA and become the world champion after he's been there all along and not had the opportunity. I like Beer Money as a tag team, and unlike WWE, TNA atleast keeps their tag teams together for a while. But I can definitely see Roode as a world champion. He has the complete package.

i always thought there was something about Robert Roode. sometimes i would put together who's the TNA version of WWE superstars and, as far as intensity and some moves, Robert Roode is TNA's Triple H. i was really intrigued by his promo, as i always am wen he cuts the intense promo.

idk if WWE ever thought of puttin Karen Angle/Jarrett in any of their storylines, but man they missed out on a good thing. i wonder wat she did before she got involved in TNA because she is a natural. pure natural in its truest form.

Suicide is a great attraction i think! and he does get over w/ the crowd. why they took him off out of nowhere i and most of us will neve know, especially wen they had one of their neve-seen talents portray him wen Daniels was gone. they gave the character great moves and was really exciting to watch.

the crowd was pretty heavily chantin for AJ Styles so that immediately put me in the mindframe that he may be the defacto leader in Fortune so they could possibly do an AJ Styles/Ric Flair program. you never know.

Velvet Sky looked amazing

It appears that Flair and Bischoff have been able to co-exist and in fact work together. Now that Steiner's back, how about him and Flair?

I guess it makes sense that Jarrett and Angle would be working a program together but I hope this gets over soon. I just dont care about Karen Jarrett or Angle or whatever her last name is or whichever wrestler she is with. I like TNA and prefer it but I will be suprised if this doesnt eventually end with Karen somehow helping Angle beat Jarrett. Thats just the way it works around TNA. Just get it over soon so that Angle can get into something more watchable, especially since he is one of my favorites.

I think Robert Roode has HHH star potential. I was actually disappointed that we didn't get to see him wrestle. He needs to be pushed big time this year.
I like Anderson as the champ, but it just doesn't seem right that he has the "Hardy Belt". It looks too goofy on him, and I can't seem to take him seriously.

I think you would get few arguments in your assessment of Roode. And really could Flair just go away.

I thought it was weird when they said that the main event was Roode and Styles vs Jarrett and Hardy. Why put Roode with Styles? Isn't he already in a tag team? So the Angle swerve made sense.

The custody stipulation just made me groan and change the channel for a bit. It's just stupid...

I thought Steiner looked a bit old, hobbling to the ring... Grandpoppa Pump?

I am happy to see suicide back. Not happy to see Hernandez in Immortal. Sad part about Immortal is Matt Hardy is in the group.

I actually kind of liked the Suicide character and I like Christopher Daniels, so it's good to see him back in any capacity.

Still, why would they bother bringing Suicide back, only to have him lose? Mind-boggling.

I also don't think it makes much sense to have Morgan and Anderson (the champ) wresting before the PPV to see who gets to face Jeff Hardy.

Wouldn't it make more sense to have Morgan wrestle Hardy, and then the winner gets a shot at the champ?

It just doesn't seem like they're treating Mr. Anderson like a true champ.

TNA needs to bring back Sonjay Dutt and Petey Williams if they want to improve the X-Division. Not Suicide.

Interesting focus, as Roode is definitely one of the major talents of TNA being severely underused. The comment left by "Blippit" about Anderson not being treated like a true champ is illuminating, especially in light of other comments in which people claim to find him not interesting. With a critical eye, the truth I think is in the middle, that his championship reign is somewhat mediocre exactly because TNA seems reticent to put a big push behind him. As I've mentioned before, his promo time, card placment and attention within the company has been suspiciously choked off since his win. Why a company would treat Angle or Jarrett as if one of them was champion instead of the guy who won the belt in one of the better storylines and PPV matches they've done in years is beyond me.
To beat a dead horse, this also goes, as Mr. Eck mentioned, for Matt Morgan. All of the issues that we all seem to be finding stem from the fact that focus has been squarely been on Angle/Jarrett since Genesis. There has been a half-hearted attempt to pretend that the "young vs. old" storyline is also somehow important, and the talent involved like Roode and Styles and a couple of months before them Anderson and Morgan have seized upon the opportunities given in a way that showcases the true talent of these younger guys, but those opportunities have been sparse and seem to be only casually thrown in when something goes awry with an Old Fart storyline. It's a pathetic shame that TNA doesn't see that the younger guys go over in a much more dynamic way when given a chance, and that they are constantly flubbing chances for really long-term and healthy storylines.
As for the excitement that TNA had building a bit before Genesis and through it, much of it has been sapped away. Mr. Eck did forget to mention, although I'm sure he noticed, that the inexplicable Bully Ray/Devon finish also featured the regrettable inclusion of RVD and Samoa Joe, who both dissappeared in the beginning of the match with no attention, and were both hurt in terms of credibility with being placed in the same match as the ancient Dudley Boyz and their three-cent storyline in the first place.
Joe, RVD, Roode, Daniels-(what the hell IS up with the inane "Suicide" crap?), Anderson, Morgan, MCMG, Hardy-(the one who isn't a fat void of personality), Styles, etc...TNA has enough new and exciting talent to do away with Steiner, Jarrett and even Angle, (as a full-time wrestler-I think Angle would do his own credibility and career good to start to slip into a Flair/manager type role).
My wife put it best during this iMPACT when she said "it feels like there's a really good show hidden away that we're not allowed to watch, and it's frustrating."
We both are fans of good wrestling, but to be honest, I'm about at the end of my rope. I do NOT have faith in TNA pulling anything out of the mess they're creating, and the sad thing is that as some mentioned, they ARE the only company providing any content even moderately entertaining for adults. Personally I think I'm ready to throw in the towel and give up on wrestling. The disgusting thing to me has been that while Bischoff, Russo, et al. have had it pounded home to them that we've had enough of the Same Old Crap, even their storyline supposedly addressing this issue is corrupted by the fact that Jarrett and Angle are the focus of that storyline. I think a long time ago these two got it into their respective heads that while they have to make certain concessions to the fans, that overall, they are smarter than we are. Their failure in that line of thinking has resulted in two fans that I know of deciding to walk away from the whole show.
Maybe I'll check in five years from now, but I'd lay 3-1 odds that five years from now TNA will be gone, and the WWE will be limping along on nothing more than the soon-to-be-vanished fortune of the McMahons. Within ten years, at 2-1, I wouldn't be surprised of wrestling is a thing of the past as far as being televised or even cared about. It will be an oddity for high school gymnasiums and self-destructive kids on Youtube.

I liked the show. There is a problem with Hernandez that will need to be fixed somehow. 1. he was a very good strong man heel 2. he made an easy change to baby face with the aide of Morgan and the injury. Now they have a two guys (Morgan and Hernandez) that the crowd wants to cheer and the storylines just aren't going to allow it. It could hurt both guys' character development. I love the Knockouts Division but 8 at a time was tedious during this episode when two on the same side were fighting each other and most did not even participate. Like I said, just tedious. Have ever noticed that the Hardy Championship Belt looks eerily like the WWE Divas Belt being worn by Eve Torres?

I would quite like to see a kind of rebellion/invasion angle, where the young and original TNA guys "take back" control of TNA. Immortal never seemed very immortal, and could be wiped out...?

I just don't see anyone who could be GM, unless they bring back Dixie...

(I have to admit, I don't know TNA long enough to know if Dixie, or Wrestling long enough to know if that angle's not been done to death in the past...)
