WWE Smackdown: Edge successfully defends the world title ... or does he?

Friday night’s episode of Smackdown ended with the world heavyweight title shrouded in controversy.

Prior to Edge’s title defense against Dolph Ziggler, acting Smackdown general manager and special referee Vickie Guerrero announced that Edge once again was prohibited from using The Spear, and if he did use the move, he would lose the title to Ziggler.

The match built to a spot in which Guerrero actually tried to spear Edge, but she bounced right off him (which was pretty funny), grabbed her ankle in pain and was attended to by a trainer outside the ring.

With Guerrero distracted, Edge hit The Spear on Ziggler, but there was no referee to make the count. Edge then hit another spear, and Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews suddenly ran down to the ring from the back wearing a referee’s shirt. The crowd in Green Bay popped as Matthews made the three count, and he and Edge then celebrated with their respective world championship belts.

But not so fast. Guerrero saw Edge hit the second spear, and she waved off Edge’s victory. Right before the show went off the air, Michael Cole proclaimed that Ziggler was the new world champion.

I’m interested to see how the situation is resolved on this Friday’s Smackdown, but ultimately it doesn’t make much difference. The Elimination Chamber match is on Feb. 20, and the defending champion has no advantage anyway.

Other thoughts on Friday’s show:

I liked the opening segment with Alberto Del Rio and Kofi Kingston. Del Rio’s heel mannerisms and delivery are always good, but I also with impressed with Kingston’s performance on the mic. I wish WWE would let him talk more often. Kingston acting like he was going to nail Del Rio with the kendo stick and then winking at him before doing so was a nice touch. Kingston really laid in the shots with the stick, as evidenced by the welts on Del Rio’s arm and shoulder. ...

It’s pretty obvious now that WWE has no intention of adding Kingston to the world heavyweight title match at WrestleMania XXVII, so I can’t argue with the booking of the Del Rio-Kingston match, which Del Rio won by tapout with the Cross Armbreaker. WWE has to strongly put over Del Rio and his finisher on the road to WrestleMania. ...

The Wade Barrett-Rey Mysterio match was good. It was a big win for Barrett, who needs it more than Mysterio does at this point. ...

Reacting to a move that Barrett hit during the match with Mysterio, Booker T. said it was “shades of Big Bubba Rogers.” “Who?” Cole asked. “The Boss Man,” Booker replied. That was funny. The late Ray Traylor wrestled as Big Bubba Rogers in the NWA and UWF before becoming The Big Boss Man in the WWF. ...

Booker T. seemed a bit more relaxed on commentary this week, but there’s still a lot of room for improvement. Cole once again dominated their verbal sparring match. ...

I like how WWE is putting Ezekiel Jackson over as a powerhouse. After body-slamming The Big Show on previous shows, Big Zeke suplexed him this time. ...

The Drew McIntyre-Chris Masters match was short (about two minutes), but there were a couple things I liked about it. One was the Sky High Powerbomb that Masters hit on McIntyre, and the other was the finishing sequence, as McIntyre reversed a backslide and hit the Future Shock DDT. ...

The Justin Gabriel-Vladimir Kozlov match was wisely kept short (a little more than two minutes), and what they did was fine. Gabriel won with the 450 Splash, which was the right call. ...

The Eve Torres-Layla match was OK, but the crowd seemed disinterested. ...

I miss Kelly Kelly already.

The main event was very entertaining, more so than I had expected. Vickie is really doing a very good job in her role.

I wonder if Vickie is going to give Edge's spot in the Elimination Chamber to someone else..

Del Rio keeps impressing me. He feels like a seasoned world champion already.

I imagine that Vickie is gonna order the title vacated. Maybe the WWE is thinking of putting the belt on Mysterio and have him face Del Rio at Wrestlemania? They do have more history than Edge has with Del Rio.

That suplex by Zeke was pretty nuts!

Del Rio was so awesome the way he said "but you already know that" had me cracking up cuz he laughed as he said it haha. And dang WWE is really building up his finisher into something special! Gotta give them credit there. But he is for real gonna be a star!

i think goin back and forth on who do i dislike on the mic the most: Michael Cole or Vickie Guerrero. Michael Cole is just annoying(which means he's doin his job i guess)and Vickie Guerrero just overacts. at first wen she was becoming one of the main people in WWE TV, she was actually pretty good. but now she CLEARLY overacts. the screaming for the "excuse me" is fine because that's where it fits best, but screaming at other places does not work at all.

then wen she placed Ziggler's foot on the rope and then laughed. ughhh godd that was cringe-inducing for me. just pure overacting and that's never easy to watch. hurry up and get Shaul on TV so Vickie won't have to be the only person in the family to be depended on for money.

I am missing Kelly Kelly too!!! The edge/ziggler programme still interests me a lot, hopefully they don't end it abruptly.

yay! arn't you happy McIntyre mentioned how he is going after Edge for being responsible for Kelly Kelly being fired.
i think 2011 is gold time for 'the chosen one'

WWE really missed the boat by not including Kelly Kelly on the show - a week after she was the show's most compelling character on Smackdown. I hate to say it, but they could have used someone like Vince Russo writing the script.

Do you reckon that Booker T is fixated on the old names for wrestlers for a reason or are they just the names that spring first to his mind?

I've already lost count of the number of times he's referred to Big Show as 'The Giant'. If it's intentional, they're either trying to show up Cole's lack of heritage knowledge, have a 'classics' angle in mind, or they have a WCW video to sell...

I'm not impressed by Booker T on commentary -- he just doesn't add much. There's time for him to improve, but if all he's going to do is say what we can all see anyway then I don't see the point.

I don't understand why Vickie didn't call for the bell as soon as she saw Edge's second spear. I also don't see why Clay Matthews would have any authority (though the crowd sure loved it!).

Hi Kev,
I can see Dolph Ziggler becoming the new champion at the next smackdown, and Edge regaining the belt at Elimination Chamber. It the only way to spice things up, as we all know Edge will be the champ for Wrestlemania. BTW, don't you think the overall card in the Chamber PPV seems too predictable and can hurt the sale?

I thought your readers my enjoy reading a back story about Macho Man Randy Savage. I worked with him when I was VP Marketing for Slim Jim. Randy was a great PR spokesperson and had a big heart. Enjoy the post.

Kevin - Thanks for clarifying what happened at the end of the Edge-Ziggler match. I heard Cole say Ziggler was the new champ, but I thought he was just being petulant. I didn't catch Vickie waving off Edge's win. Other wrestling boards are equally confused. Not exactly the reaction you'd want if you're the show's writers, producers or director.

I hate to say it, but the Corre is just plain boring. There are now two groups delivering post-match beatdowns every week, after 6 months of the original Nexus doing it. It's just gotten tiresome. The only real highlight is Zeke's weekly show of strength.

Anyone else think one of these days Justin Gabriel is going to break a shin doing his 450 splash? Everytime he under rotates I cringe.

I liked the way Smackdown was booked this week. Those that needed to win did and those that lost were not really hurt in the long run. I thought Chris Masters really sold McIntyre's future shock DDT pretty well. I do have the feeling that Kelly Kelly will come back as McIntyre's personal valet/manager. Did anyone else think that Michael Cole was even more over the top than usual. I found him to be very distracting and even turned the sound off for a couple of minutes. A heel announcer is one thing but he needs to understand that the wrestlers are the show, not the announcers.

How about Christian somehow coming out of this with the title? To set up a Christian-Edge-ADR match at Mania?

You think that Matthews could have at least look at Edge pinning Ziggler to make sure the shoulders were down!

Hey Kevin, what exactly happened to Striker? I thought he was a breath of fresh air on commentary.

I think WWE really mishandled the main event finish. What could have been a wonderful feel-good moment to end a great week of publicity for WWE with the Packers bringing the World Heavyweight Championship on stage at the Super Bowl instead felt ruined by a Dusty finish and a heel play-by-play announcer yelling that there's a new champion without any of us being able to confirm what the heck happened. I think it's time to pull back on Michael Cole's reins a little so we don't have any more head-scratching, let-down moments like we did on Friday (and because Cole is just becoming a beating to listen to in general).

Big Bubba Rogers = another dead wrestler the WWE could care less about.

I think Edge will end up retaining the World title after the EC because they want a face vs heel at WrestleMania nobody wants Del Rio vs Ziggler hey Kev the buzz is the Rock to host Mania your thoughts .

Although Striker's style annoys me quite a bit sometimes (eg "many experts say...", or "ALL the pressure on [insert joint here]"), he's still ten times better than Booker. Watching Smackdown this week, Booker actually reminded me of Randy Savage's rambling commentary in the early 90s (before anyone jumps on me, Savage is one of my all-time favourite wrestlers, but NOT commentators).

I had also had the thought that vacating the title for Elimination Chamber is pointless, since it's basically vacated anyway. The only effect would be to add another reign to Edge's already-ludicrous total if he wins.

The Drew/Kelly thing has really lost some steam over the past couple of weeks, if it's still actually going. Whatever happens, I hope Drew gets into an actual feud sometime soon.

Like some people have mentioned, 2 people I have enjoyed in the past are really just having go-away heat for me lately is Cole and Vicki. Vicki is way over the top to where it gets silly. I still think Cole is funny but I'd prefer him as a manager, 2 hours of the constant schtick is a bit much.

Kev, just a sidenote. Don't you think the WWE production team put together tremendous video packages consistently? The HBK package for his Hall of Fame Induction was fantastic, and they always seem to hit the jackpot with their song choice. It really adds to the overall product. Very good stuff.

I really think they're going to lean towards making the likely Edge/Del Rio at Wrestlemania three way with Ziggler involved. There doesn't seem to be enough time for them to wrap up Edge/Ziggler and start a new feud with Del Rio in time for the big event. I'm imagining some kind of double pinfall at the chamber, or someone who's eliminated sticking around to deal the knockout blow, creating controversy.

Now that finish reminded me of the old Worldwide Wrestling shows on Saturday mornings! I'd watch the squash matches, hear the promos, and enjoy the occasional, "Fans, here's what happened at Such-and-Such Event, and now so-an-so's vowed revenge! Let's go to the tape!" But what I remember most was the main event which was "television time remaining", usually ten minutes or so. Right about the time Caudill or Ross or Shiavone or Crockett would yell, "We've gotta go, fans! Tune in next week!" the action was just getting great, if not confusing! But I loved it. And I loved this ending of Smackdown, too. I will be tuned in next Friday as a result!

No comment on the future split of Lay-Cool? It was rather odd how Michelle made it seem like if she won the title it would be HER title, after they were co-champions when Layla had won it...

I hope McCool pops out some Taker-babies soon so she can go away.

having miss piggy guerrero as the acting smackdown manager has brought smackdown to its lamest. Dolph, miss piggy and barrett is the worst mistake ever. Having these three in the WWE is a bad mistake and I don't blame the ones who left for TNA it seems to be better than smackdown. I see that RAW is going back to being the best ever with everyone who is on there and is coming back!!!!
