« What the WrestleMania XXVII card may look like | Main | WWE Raw: This Rumble match has royal winner »

Is Sting coming to WWE on 2-21-11?

Ever since WWE aired a brief, cryptic video on Raw Monday night, the Internet has been buzzing about what it means, and the popular belief is that it signals the debut of Sting in WWE.

The video, which aired twice during the program, showed a dark figure in a long, black coat walking toward a creepy-looking house during a rainstorm, while sinister music played. At the end, a graphic that said “2-21-11” came on the screen. That date is the night after the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view.

My first thought when I saw the video was that it was a tease for The Undertaker’s return – and it may indeed be exactly that. In fact, local advertising for Raw on Feb. 21 in Fresno, Calif., promoted "the return of The Undertaker."

However, the case for the video being a prelude to Sting coming to WWE is a compelling one.

WWE needs a headline-grabbing attraction for WrestleMania XXVII, and with any big-name celebrity in-ring involvement seemingly unlikely at this point, Sting making his first-ever appearance in a WWE ring – perhaps in a dream match against The Undertaker – fits the bill.

The fact that the event takes place at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta – the home base for WCW, where Sting was a major superstar for more than a decade – makes the scenario even more plausible.

On top of that, Sting was not at Monday’s TNA Impact taping and apparently is not part of the “They” story line.

If Sting truly is bound for WrestleMania, it seems logical that WWE also would induct him into the Hall of Fame the night before.

One thing is for sure: Monday’s video definitely has fans talking. However, if the payoff ends up being the return of The Undertaker and not the debut of Sting, I have a feeling that a lot of those fans are going to view it as a letdown.

If Sting shows up on RAW in three weeks I will mark out like a little girl at an N'Sync concert!!!

And I agree, honestly I think anyone other than Sting would be a let down at this point. I can't remember anything WWE has done get this many people talking in a long time.

The WWE event held on 02/21/11 is announcing the show that night marks the return of the Undertaker. It's doubtful the arena would advertise the Undertaker's return otherwise.

So the video is hinting to the Undertaker's return.

http://savemartcenter.com/

Apparently it is a one year deal reported in the New York Post or Dauly News 02/01/11.. There is no way the WWE would run such a close to Sting WCW gimmick like this and it not be him. The plan is to have Sting vs Taker at Mania is my understanding.

Seeing that trenchcoat in the video is a good clue. If it is Sting, will he have the Black and White face paint or the Red and Black face paint? Will the Wolfpack be regrouped or will Sting be the new leader of the Straight Edge Society?

Crazy stuff there. Hell would freeze if Sting steps in WWE. Then again, Bret Hart DID came back last year...

Maybe they'll both be there! =O

Sting never came to mind as I saw both vignettes, instead going with the Undertaker's return. It would be an amazing event if Sting set foot inside a WWE ring, though I kinda doubt that it's going to happen.

I don't see the advertisements for Taker making it any less likely to be Sting.

I actually see it as a brilliant red herring. Most everyone will anticipate it to be Taker. When Taker comes out on that Monday, the commentators will sell it also. Everyone will be disappointed over another lame WWE buildup with no payoff... then BAM, Sting comes out and confronts Taker. Setting up the WM match.

It really makes all the sense in the world to put the two of these together as well. Other than HBK, Taker uniquely exemplifies what it means to be WWF/WWE. And there really is no better "anti WWE" than Sting.

It almost makes TOOOOO much sense....

This report says Sting has signed with WWE

http://www.examiner.com/www-in-national/it-s-official-wcw-and-tna-superstar-sting-signs-with-wwe

it will be the undertaker and it will be a letdown.

well, my only thought why it isn't Sting is because I'm pretty sure he is still under contract with TNA. He at the very least is still on the TNA roster on their website and they usually remove someone almost immediately when they leave the company. But i would 100% mark out if Sting did make the jump, I've been a huge fan of his since i began watching wrestling when i was 7.

RESPONSE FROM KE: It is my understanding that Sting's TNA contract expired and he has not signed a new one.

I will mark out like I have not in a long time if Sting shows up in WWE.

Interesting stuff!

Vince, please let it be Sting.

The NY DailyNews report is a fake. There is no reported named King Jordan. Only the Slammer

The only thing that is for sure with the Stinger is that nothing is for sure.

I know the brand split means about nothing these days, but Taker being a Smackdown superstar would lead me to think it is not him they're promoting on Raw.

If it isn't Sting and someone at WWE didn't foresee the rumors and potential backlash that promo would generate, they better add some code to the date next time and finish Jericho's new contract quick so he could return with a trench coat, baseball bad and ridicule the easily duped WWE Universe.

When i saw the first video i thought it was for some movie then when they showed it later on then i knew it was wwe's and like many i to thought it was a return for taker and it still might be considering the arena is advertiseing him that night on there web site but also the media did say sting has signed with wwe and yes he did.as of last night if you went to his his wikapedia page there was a spot where it was talking about his walk out on tna impact and right after that it said stin has sign on raw i think they sliped that one in too early as now it is gone give it after 2/21/11 it will be back so i think yes taker will return on that day but the video was not for him wait for a few more to show more clues cause this will lead to a undertaker vs sting match at maina so mark that day down as 2/21/11 will be nothing like 10/10/10 despointing

that would definitely be a cool dream to see the vignette actually bein revealed to be BOTH Sting and The Undertaker. of course that would be just a dream, but still nice to see. just picture it:

they play the current vignette goin around now as it is. then a new one comes on w/ another shrowded trench-coat figure walking up to that dark, desolent cabin and right wen he gets to the door, the door opens up and we see the first figure standing there and then the second figures walks into the building.

then on the 3rd and final one, we see inside the two figures standing side by side w/ the camera slowly zooming back to reveal both The Undertaker and Sting, standing side by side, Undertaker on the left, Sting on the right as they both lift their heads up to reveal themselves as Undertaker does his eye-roll and Sting just stares into the camera as thunder and lightning shatters in the air.

that would be sweet.

Although I have never been a big fan of Sting's, the thought of him in a WWE ring is so surreal that I would have to see it.

Let's remember that if it is not Sting, the disappointment that fans feel is more fan-induced, rather than WWE not producing something compelling. Unfortunately, even if it is Sting, I have the feeling that it will be anti-climatic, much as wanting to see Bret Hart in a WWE ring turned out to be... it was a great 10 minutes, but then, after the novelty and speculation ended, it fell rather flat.

Let's see...Booker T, Kevin Nash, and now Sting. Knowing how Vince has The Nexus and The Corre. I guess The Main Event Mafia is next...or NwO?

I'm almost certain the music playing in the background was a version of stings wcw entrance theme is it?

Sting/Undetaker would be a dream match, but with only a 6 week build up? Yeah it could be done, but I have another scenario.

Undertaker takes on Wade Barrett at Wrestlemania. The Corre interferes and just when it looks like Undertaker will finally lose, Sting comes in and saves the day. A friendship develops between Sting and Undertaker. Then, around Summerslam, Sting turns on the Undertaker heading into Undertaker's time off at the end of the year.

Royal Rumble 2012, Undertaker returns and we go into Wrestlemania 2012 with Sting vs. Undertaker as your main event. That would give us a year long payoff, with the Undertaker's final match being against Sting, and going 20-0.

Oh my God please let it be the Stinger'!! That would be soooooo Awesome! Come on Vince make it happen & really put the wwe in the Untouchables list set in Stone!!

I'm a huge Sting fan and would love to see this happen, but I too immediately thought it was foreshadowing the return of the Undertaker. I thought it made sense to bring him back to TV after the last pay-per-view before Wrestlemania because everyone knows he's going to defend The Streak and they need time for him to build a program with someone.

As for a Sting versus Undertaker match, it's not that I wouldn't love to see it, but do you really think that after all these years of never joining the WWE, that Sting would suddenly agree to do so AND agree to lose to the Undertaker in what could be his first match? Sting's not Kevin Nash, who's willing to do anything for a paycheck (like a one night run-in as Diesel at the Royal Rumble). So as much as everyone would like to see Sting in the WWE, I just don't see it happening.

It probably is Sting, but would Sting sign and then agree to LOSE to the Undertaker the night after being inducted into the Hall of Fame? "Really?"

RESPONSE FROM KE: Sure, why not? It's a work. Wins and losses aren't real. The WrestleMania payday is, though.

If it is only the return of Taker, I'd be mad. Believe me, I love Taker and he has always been the #1 Sports Entertainer in my book, yes better than Hogan, Rock, anyone.

But if he's returning for the millionth time (I understand he's older and deserves the time off) it wouldn't be so great.

I hope to the Wrestling Gods that the reports are true and Sting has signed. I think it would be bigger than Bret hugging HBK (which was pretty forced, imo.)

After watching the video at least a dozen times, I want to say its sting. I really do, YET I have a feeling its the Undertaker. And sad as it may sound, I see another Undertaker vs Kane match at Wrestlemania. I would rather see a match between Nexus and the Corre than see Undertaker vs Wade Barrett.

For months everyone has been speculating HHH's return. When will it be?

What is the likeliness that Vince puts Booker T in the WWE hall of fame?

I read your blog all the time but don't read spoilers. Please keep this kind of stuff hidden unless you click the story much like you did with the surprise Rumble entrants. Keep up the good work!

Oh and I realize this is a rumor and NOT a fact like the Rumble entrants so it is possibly not a spoiler. But you know what I mean :)

I hope he comes out as the bad-ass surfer Sting and not that lame Crow rip-off.

(Ok, that idea is even worse than Dusty Rhodes donning yellow polka dots.)

This vignette looks eerily similar to the one for Sting's return at Starrcade 97:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=my9QDwj8Qgs

I checked it out on the NY Daily news page, and they have no listing what so ever for King Jordan. However, there is an "elkingjordan" with a youtube channel/page that has seemed to interview several wrastlin' stars - as my grandpa would put it - in the NY area. Maybe its a hoax, maybe its not. Either way, it would be nice if someone could track down the source and get a confirmation that he really reported it.

Also, does it seem strange that in an interview just weeks ago Jericho was talking like he had no interest in returning to the WWE anytime soon, and now he's teasing the 90% completed contract? If by some miracle Jericho, Taker, AND Sting hit the small screen on 2-21-11, the wife and I are going to have to have a long conversation about reallocating some of the entertainment budget towards WM.

WWE are saying it's Taker but the surprise is it's Sting. Why would Taker return on RAW when he's on SD? also why the mystery? why not show all of Taker instead of just the coat? we all are expecting him to return before WM anyway like every other year, so a teaser like this doesn't make sense. It has to be Stinger.

Nothing would surprise me with Vince McMahon.

Why would Sting sign with the WWE for the purposes of jobbing to Taker at WMXVII? If that's the case then it must be for a aircraft carrier full of money.

Sting came to my mind almost immediately, since I've thought for a while that bringing in Booker and nash was partly meant just as an 'fu' moment to TNA. Sting would be awesome to see in a wrestlemania, but like others, I'd rather see a 2012 Sting/UT match than just a few weeks from now.

Maybe that was the undertaker's abode in Death valley that Sting was walking into in the ad?

If not, it should be!

Sting versus Undertaker at Wrestlemania would = walk off grand slam for WWE.

I don't get the love for Sting. If it is him, and it's him vs Taker at WM, that match will mean next to nothing for me. First of all, those two won't be able to put on a good ppv match, let alone a good WM match at this point in their careers. Second, it's not believable that anyone will beat Taker at WM, after HBK couldn't 2 years straight. Especially not a career WCW/TNA guy going to the WWE for the first time. Yawn.

i just read an interview where jericho said his new wwe deal is 90% done. i think its gonna be him vs sting this year. then they can properly build sting vs taker next year when taker is at a 100% health wise

Are you sure that wasn't just a teaser before the featured trailer for "The Chaperone" that they advertised all evening?

When I first saw the promo I thought it was setting up a Taker return.

But it's possible it could turn out be Sting (or someone else entirely) because, come to think of it, Taker returning on Raw instead of on ppv or Smackdown doesn't make as much sense.

@ Jay: I don't think these two have to go out and have a great PPV match, just the fact that they'll be in the same ring together is enough. Remember Rock/Hogan from WM 18? The crowd made that match a whole lot better than what it was.

It would bf great if it is Sting but I didn't think his trenchcoat was as long as the one in the video.

Well, Taker's last match in WCW WAS against Sting...if it isn't Sting I say we riot.

Okay, when we start analyzing lengths of trench coats, it's time for me to go to bed.

The return of Mike Adamle

No doubt that Stink v UT would be the big draw Rasslemania needs, but... why? They're both so far past their prime. At least last year, Michaels was still one of the top performers in the business, and Taker was capable of hanging with him. I don't think either Sting or UT can carry a match without a great opponent. I just can't imagine the actual performance being worthy of the hype it would get. But the buildup could be entertaining.

Regardless of who it is this simple vingette has caused a Buz I haven't seen in years. That's good for wrestling in general. I will say if it's not Sting it will kill the good will and anticipation towards his teased return. I for one will be pissed. i didn't but the Rumble and for sure won't buy Mania. I mean I watched the vingette from Monday literally 50 times. I haven't done that since the NWO days.

I think that if Sting comes back he'll face Shawn Michaels. Michaels' HOF announcement was made so far ahead of time WWE had to be planting the seeds for him doing something significant at Wrestlemania.

As many have said, it wouldn't make sense for Sting to come to WWE for six weeks, do a job and disappear. As born-again Christians, he and Michaels have made multiple appearances together and would be very comfortable working with each other. Michaels certainly won't tarnish his reputation by coming back to do this match and doing the job does no harm to him either.

The game plan should be to give Sting a run to build toward a match at Wrestlemania in 2012 with the Undertaker. Sting can cement his legacy by a brief run as World Champion (and how cool would that be to see that belt back around Sting's waist) and job out to Undertaker to walk away.

WWE already planted the seeds for Barrett/Undertaker this year and should stick to it. Let Sting/Undertaker do a proper build. WWE will get plenty of publicity from a match with Michaels and lock in THE main event next year.

@Andre I see what you mean, but Sting/Taker isn't nearly on the same level as Rock/Hogan. At least not to me.

I'd love to see taker verses sting at mania but that would mean sting legendary carrier would go down the crapper because he would lose his first mania. They should wait until next year if either one doesn't retire first.

the WWE has had over 20 years to get sting and thay have not been able to, so why would he now. I get that the WWE is in need of good wrestlers for wrestlemania because just about everyone in WWE sucks, but it's not going to be sting. And Booker T and Kevin Nash are not good enough to hurt TNA of help WWE

I don't really understand the point in hypeing
The Undertakers return, or trying to make everyone think he lives in a little house in the woods. Exspecially after that whole Kid Rock Last Ride American Badass stunt.

And if all were going on is a black coat.
I want to personally add Paul E. Dangerously into the mix.

It would be nice to finally see Sting in the WWE. And if that were to happen . . . Forget the Undertaker . . . I want to see Sting vs The Big Show, no out side interference, no run ins, no NWO, no crooked referees, no time limit, no count outs, no dq's, no commercial breaks, no forign objects. . . Just a clean match with a clean winner. . . . . Something WCW could never make happen.

Haha, right on Evan, I hope this means Paul E is returning !!!

Brace yourself folks, for the FOUR-MAN ANNOUNCE TABLE...

I have been reading reports about Sting heading to the WWF/E for 11 years. I'll believe it only when I see him actually on stage or in the ring. And even then, I may not fully believe it.

I haven't watched WWE with any consistency since Ric Flair retired. However, Sting would get me interested in the WWE again. There are some reasons that it is possibly Sting (keep in mind that I did not watch WWE this past week).

1) The WWE product has totally changed to be more family friendly. I'm sure Sting as a born again Christian likes that change.

2) The money - that is funny. Vince paid Mayweather $20M. I can envision a 1 year contract for $1M+ or a one off for $500,000+.

3) What is anyone else offering Sting? Another repeat angle in TNA? Sting would definitely prefer something fresher at his age. He doesn't have to worry about thumb tacks or blading in the WWE.

4) He can be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame which is definitely deserved.

So as a TNA fan, it is regrettable but as a wrestling fan, I am loving it. Wrestling needs this type of excitement. (I wonder how Scott Steiner feels being the one MEM member on the sideline that wasn't invited to WWE).

If Sting is @ Wrestlemania, I will be there, and I live in PA! He was/is the greatest, most respectable wrestler to ever lace-up a pair of boots!

Sting is going to debut on wwe because he hasn't done that

You know what would be really funny about all this, that's if Vinnie threw everyone a curve ball and Vampiro showed up instead.

Unless its wishful thinking or i am seeing things, it seems the promo of 2.20.11 that is airing today on WWE.com is slightly different from the one that aired last Monday, it goes to say its worth looking at again, to me it seems when the numbers go up in smoke, now its a more defined N and G and a larger T in the middle, again, i admit i might be seeing things, can someone else look and let me know if they see the same?

The first person I thought it was going to be was Undertaker, but I also thought Sting. I just don't know if Sting has any ties with TNA still or not. I feel like him and Nash, if Sting isn't returning to the WWE, will be the reason Immortal/ Fortune crumble. Anderson and Angle and everybody are kicking their a**, but numbers man, its hard no matter how bada** you are to beat up like twelve people.

If anyone has actually been paying attention they stated that the undertaker is returning march 15th at the sprint center in kansas city missouri

It's the Undertaker for sure! Last night on Raw the commercial was showed twice, different than the original. At the end there is a man singing the lines "No grave can keep my body down." Holy s*** y'all, the Deadman is back.

I really, really, really hope that it is Sting. But, in the last promo just aired yesterday (RAW 2/7/11) the music vocals in the promo were saying "No grave will hold my body down.." So, if it really is the Undertaker that they are hyping, it will be the biggest disapointment in WWE history.

For me personally, it would be a much bigger disappointment if it is anyone else than the Undertaker. The promos have worked perfectly to get me excited (yes, once again) about his return.

I don't particularly care about Sting, and I wager most of the average WWE fans, as opposed to general wrestling fans, might not even know who he is.

No doubt it's The Undertaker after last night's clip, but why's he wearing cowboy boots? I keep hoping maybe it'll be something like, you finally see him enter the house and he's all muddy and such, then a voice behind him says "Welcome home." Undertaker turns around, and there's Sting sitting there with a muddy shovel.I think something like that would be cool,'cos these "Undertaker killed and reborn" stories are getting more frequent and more meaningless.

http://www.savemartcenter.com/index.php?option=com_jcalpro&Itemid=26&extmode=view&extid=431

This clearly shows (highlighted in fact) that The Undertaker is returning on this date. I live in Central California so you can bet that I'll be there and if this is an Undertaker gimmick, you can bet I'll do everything I can to start a, "WE WANT STING" chant. What a major letdown if this isn't the premiere of Sting in the WWE.

I think it's mable in the 2 21 11 videos. I think he's gonna come back an feud with Kevin Nash then at mania Mo can do a run in. This will lead to a mable an mo reunion an they will go after the tag titles.

it HAS to be The Undertaker.. he has a streak at Wrestlemania... so.. he needs to be there to keep the streak alive!

if the undertaker returns that just proves 100% that wwe is fake and nobody will buy tickets and they would go out of buisness

So funny everyone says the video is sting. Looked like taker to me

I think it is undertaker inside the house and sting outside the house

For goodness sakes, its quite clearly a teaser for the return of The Undertaker. Here's my reasons...

1) The long black coat, stormy night
2) Johnny Cash singing about "no grave can hold my body down" (Remember he lost to Kane in a Buried Alive Match)
3) He is clearly seen in a reflection and there's no sign of Sting at all.

Although it was already spoiled by the Fresno arena that Undertaker will indeed return this does not rule out the possibility of the Icon Sting making his way into the wwe ring. Although the most recent promo appears to be the undertaker, it is missing one thing. At the end of the promo, the mysterious man is standing outside in the rain looking in. Pause the video at this point and look into the window. There is still a silhouette standing in the light which if you remember looked alot like the undertaker in the beginning of the video. Could it Possibly be Sting? Could McMahon finally pull this off? There are many fans of the wwe universe talking about the possible sting storylines. This would in fact be a dream come true for many. Keep in mind that it is wrestlemania season and we all know that McMahon does not like to disappoint. We have already been shocked with the electrifying return of The Rock so why stop now ?
The whole 2-21-11 promo may be intended to build up takers return but they dont need to do this so why dissapoint fans. Many feel that this is a teaser for sting but if the wwe somehow pulls it off for wrestlemania this will in fact be one of the most unforgettable moments ever in the history of professional wrestling. The wwe is the best at what they do and this is promoting. While it is possibly just the undertakers return, this doesnt mean that the wwe is not using stings free agency to attract attention and draw a crowd. This is what they do so if we do get sting that would be great but if we dont we can not cease to think that the man in the coat in the promo wasnt meant to be sting. In less than a day we will find out what the wwe has up their sleeve but until then, let your mind wander. Sting? Undertaker?

except that takers reflection is on the inside and theres still someone on the outside and sting in wwe would be epic i dont care if ur jus a wwe fan or not u should know who sting is and was cause he is one of the greats

Since I was about 12 I have been watching him and now I am 30 he still to this day is my number 1 wrestler. Sting deserves to be in the hall of fame no one can deny it. If this is his last year and signs with wwe you best believe I will record all showings of that.
