WWE Smackdown: Wade Barrett has a new posse
Things seemed to have turned out pretty well for Wade Barrett, who less than two weeks ago was overthrown by CM Punk and booted out of The Nexus, the faction that he had originally put together.
On Smackdown Friday night, Barrett formed a new group, and in my opinion, it’s a better one than Punk’s version of Nexus.
During Barrett’s match with The Big Show, former Nexus members Justin Gabriel and Heath Slater (who had refused to take part in Punk’s initiation process this past Monday on Raw) did a run-in to aid Barrett. Then in an even bigger surprise, Ezekiel Jackson – who had been a babyface on Raw and seemed to still be one in his recent Smackdown video packages that were hyping his return – came out and joined in the attack on Big Show.
Yep, I’ll take Jackson, Gabriel and Slater over David Otunga, Michael McGillicutty and Husky Harris. I just wonder who will get custody of Skip Sheffield when he returns from injury.
By the way, it was never explained why Barrett – and now Gabriel and Slater, too – can just jump from Raw to Smackdown on their own, but perhaps an explanation is coming. Smackdown general manager Teddy Long made a remark about “the Wade Barrett situation” after receiving a phone call backstage.
Other thoughts on Friday’s show:
Jackson was put over strong as a monster, as he body-slammed Big Show with ease during the post-match beatdown. On a side note, by my count this is the third time during Jackson’s relatively short tenure in WWE that he has teased a babyface turn only to go right back to being a heel. …
I liked the “Cutting Edge” segment, as Edge, Dolph Ziggler and Vickie Guerrero all were good in their roles. Ziggler and Guerrero got a lot of heat from the crowd after Ziggler hit the Zig Zag on Edge onto the ring steps and then proceeded to make out with Guerrero over the fallen Edge. It’s great to see Ziggler getting an opportunity to work a main event program. …
Here was the best exchange of the “Cutting Edge” segment:
Edge: You could go parasailing with a pair of [Vickie’s] panties!
Guerrero: You can’t do that anymore!
Ziggler: She’s lost weight, Edge.
Good stuff. …
The tag team match in which Rey Mysterio and R-Truth defeated Alberto Del Rio and Cody Rhodes was decent. It looked as if Mysterio slipped off the top rope when he splashed Rhodes for the win, but the camera angle made it hard to tell. …
I don’t agree with the decision to have Drew McIntyre lose to Trent Barreta, although I do understand the logic behind it as it relates to McIntyre’s angle with Kelly Kelly. McIntyre lost on a fluke after dominating the match, and that led to him brutally attacking Barreta backstage. Kelly Kelly just happened to be walking by in the hallway at that point, and McIntyre unsuccessfully tried to convince her that he’s really a decent guy. Like I said, I see why WWE booked McIntyre to lose, but if he is to have any chance of getting over to a significant degree, WWE really needs to limit his losses, and he definitely shouldn’t be getting pinned by a guy as low in the pecking order as Barreta. …
The Kofi Kingston-Jack Swagger match was good. Kingston – who got the victory – was given an opportunity to cut a promo before the match and he did a serviceable job. …
I liked the finish to the Beth Phoenix-Michelle McCool match. McCool rolled through the Glam Slam and got a two-count, but Phoenix then countered with a roll-up for the victory. The best part of the match, however, was Layla’s dress. Amazing. …
JTG, yo killin’ me, son. Just brutal.

Kev, do you think Smackdown is utilising all of its roster?
For me, I didn't need to see another Kingston v Swagger or Ziggler again week after week. Also the constant repeat of Del Rio and Mysterio in a tag team match is too much for me personally.
I liked the addition of R Truth as it was a change of the same old and the mini fued between Baretta and Mcintyre is also good.

Kevin
I agree with you totally.... the dress was smoking !!!!

I only count two Ezekiel Jackson sudden turns:
1) when he turned on Christian to join Regal on ECW
2) New Nexus
RESPONSE FROM KE: I also remember when he was with Regal and Kolzlov and it appeared that Jackson was going to turn babyface but Kozlov turned instead.

Here we go with The Nexus becoming the NWO. Barrett's Nexus vs. Punk's Nexus. Did anyone tell WWE Creative what happened to the NWO when it became too diluted? I guess not.

I might still choose Punk's group over Barrett's group. Punk alone puts them a notch higher on the interest scale.

Either Edge did a great job of selling a fall, or Ziggler messed up and threw him head first right onto those steps. I'd be surprised if he didn't at least have a concussion.

I agree with everything you said, but I was hoping Ziggler would bury Edge just a little... maybe compare his own (ridiculous) torso to Edge's or talk to Edge's face about being over the hill, etc... but that might be hitting too close to home!
As a fan, the Ziggler/Vicky combo really is such a joy in every aspect. Ziggler is so exciting in-ring and has such a great look, and Vicky turns everything she touches thermonuclear. When I'm watching, I really believe in the Ziggler/Vicky relationship... Ziggler seems so natural, they really do come across as a couple. They're probably my favorite part of smackdown (well, del Rio is great too).
I feel like Barretta's role should have been Kaval's... or someone a little more credible...

What are the chances that Wade Barrett's move to SmackDown and formation of a group is actually part of a Nexus expansion, with CM Punk leading the Raw branch and Barrett leading the SmackDown branch?
Posted by: Matthew | January 16, 2011 2:56 PM
Lots of site are calling the Barrett faction another Nexus, which to me raises numerous questions. The first of which- what is the plural of "Nexus"?
I spent two weeks debating that in my head before I finally got the bright idea to look at Dictionary.com. It's "Nexuses", not "Nexi", even if I believe that it should be the other way around. I think calling the two groups the Nexi would sound way legit, but stupid laws of grammer state that I have to add that extra syllable. Boo!
Anyways, good talk. I'll go back to my corner now!

come on guys... Layla NEVER looks bad!!

Hey Kev i hear that Sting is going to be the next inducty into the HOF and that Hulk Hogan and been taking to the WWE do think that is why he has not been on TNA as of late .

I agree with you when U say that Wade barret has a better faction than C.M. Punk. I also think that The Cuttin Edge segment was hilarious, but Michael Cole makes me want to punch him in the mouth.
Layla's dress was HOT!! And call me what you want, but I got a lil peeved when the Layla was jumping up and down snd they switched camera shots.
All in all...a good show.

Hey Kevin. Think we'll see a Smackdown Nexus vs. Raw Nexus at WrestleMania?
RESPONSE FROM KE: I hope not.

The wwe is going to go down the tube really fast if they don't bring some real excitement to their shows. CM Punk and Nexus on Raw. Now you got Wade Barrett and Nexus2 on Smackdown. Please stop the madness. David Otunga need to be his own man. He need to come out of his shell like right now.
Posted by: norma | January 16, 2011 10:07 PM
I kinda guessed Gabriel and Slater would join Barrett but was surprised by Jackson. I doubt the two Nexus groups will ever clash. It would be hard to get Barrett or Punk over as a face so my guess is it will be a swerve to have Nexus take over both shows in an "invasion" story.
However, I see a program with Taker at Wrestlemania is building for Barrett. The hook will be "can Taker defeat Barrett with the Smackdown Nexus at ringside?" That will be the only way to make it seem like Undertaker could possibly lose at WM. I don't see a single heel that would generate the "well, maybe he could end the streak" feeling.
A group threatening to give Barrett an assist at WM would make the possibility of the streak coming to an end seem realistic. This would also be another way to hide the fact that Undertaker will not have another 5 star match this year.

Hey love your blog. I like the new stable with Wade. It looks like it could be very interesting. I notice that you seem to be down on JTG. I think you are overly harsh on his Brooklyn segments.

What are the odds we have a Wrestlemania match between the new Nexus and the old Nexus?
Posted by: Sam | January 17, 2011 12:08 AM
The Sting/WWE rumor mill is heating up pretty quickly.
I hope it happens but I might call for a little end-around from everyone screaming for Sting/Undertaker.
Everyone was wondering why there was such an early announcement for Shawn Michael's HOF induction and him showing up on Smackdown. I think it was because he and Sting are very comfortable together personally, they may be setting up a Sting/Michaels match at this year's Wrestlemania IF Sting signs.
Michaels showing up so far out of the HOF inductions gets him back in everyone's head and gives WWE time to build the match if Sting signs shortly.
Michaels could do the job with no harm done while elevating Sting. WWE then builds Sting up for a year setting up the dream match with Undertaker in 2012. I don't think anyone would be too upset with Shawn coming back for a one-shot like this one and it would be pretty easy to create his motivation to return to face Sting for the first time.
I can't see how doing the Sting/UT match right away works in the long haul for anyone unless Sting says won't sign unless it's one and done. A one year run for Sting culminating with that match would be a fitting way for both Sting and Undertaker to walk away well if they chose.
Thoughts?

Hey Kevin. Think we'll see a Smackdown Nexus vs. Raw Nexus at WrestleMania?
RESPONSE FROM KE: I hope not.
Posted by: Rich | January 16, 2011 9:38 PM
Kev, do you hope not in the sense that you think it would be a poor match, or in the sense that you would rather see Punk/Barrett in bigger bouts with different (better) opponents?
RESPONSE FROM KE: Bigger matches, different opponents.

Sting/Undertaker would be very cool but unlikely.... Lesnar/Undertaker would be only slightly less cool but only slightly less unlikely. Sting/Michaels is just not gonna happen.
'Taker vs. Nexus strikes me as very possible given the very good reasoning "mat" laid out...
Posted by: Jules Bentley | January 17, 2011 2:27 PM
I don't see WWE signing Sting. He's a great personality, but in terms of actual wrestling chops, he's been living on his reputation for at least a decade. WWE bringing in some other promotion's fading star is... well... something TNA would do, not WWE.
It'd be especially strange coming off a year in which WWE did its damndest to push new, young athletes. (And its reputed reluctance to sign any indie wrestlers over age 30.)
I could see WWE opening the door for Sting in the HoF -- but only if TNA dies, or loses its TV deal with Spike. Until then, it's hard to imagine WWE doing anything that would acknowledge the existence of TNA. Including a push or HoF induction for Sting.

Sting is the most overrated wrestler in history. I hope he never works for WWE. In fact, I hope he never wrestles on tv again.

Actually, I think it would have come across alot better if Punk would have stole Nexus from Barrett and then changed their name to just drive in a final nail.
But he has never gave us an explanation of why he stole them in the first place????
Posted by: rob the barber | January 17, 2011 9:25 PM
If the Nexus split is "genuine", then I predict Barrett winning the World Heavyweight Championship around SummerSlam, then openly challenging Punk for leadership (since Punk used his titles vs Barrett's none as part of gaining the trust of the rest of Nexus).
That could also set up a Survivor Series match between the two factions, and/or a one-on-one match to determine the overall leader.

This whole Nexus thing makes me miss the old days of War Games. A returning Skip Sheffield could even play the role of Shockmaster eating it on the steps.

This thing you have going on with PUNK is Wrong!!! This having his men abuse each other is Wrong!!! We are as parents trying to teach our children that hurting others is wrong! This is what Gangs do and we have enough of that grime without you encourging it on a family show. Children get ideas from this! Please remove this kind of thing from your shows.
Posted by: Kay | January 19, 2011 11:46 AM
Seriously kay? CM Punk is a heel, aka, a bad guy. If you can't handle your children watching bad guys (and punks character isn't even close to being cheered by the kids) do bad things, then you might want to limit your kids to watching scooby doo and mickey mouse.

@Jay - I'm so glad you posted this. I completely agree with your sentiments about Sting and I was honestly worried that I was the only one who didn't love love love love the guy. I actually thinks awful. He is an instant channel changer for me, always has been and if he is on Wrestlemania I will probably use that match to make a sandwich or a nap or something.
