WWE Smackdown: The Corre shows up; Teddy Long struck down
Friday night’s Smackdown opened with Wade Barrett announcing that the new group consisting of him, Ezekiel Jackson, Justin Gabriel and Heath Slater, will be known as The Corre. Barrett also assured Smackdown general manager Teddy Long that they respect him and want to work with him, not against him.
In the very next segment, an unconscious Long was shown lying on the floor backstage. The obvious conclusion is that The Corre was responsible for the attack on Long, but there is another possible scenario.
Dolph Ziggler and Vickie Guerrero were in the room when Long was found on the floor, and Guerrero was uncharacteristically concerned about Long before she placed herself in charge after he was taken off in an ambulance.
Then again, if it was Ziggler and Guerrero who were behind the attack, that would be kind of obvious, too. Perhaps Guerrero and Ziggler conspired with The Corre to take out Long.
It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out. And no disrespect to Long, but if he’s going to be kept off TV for a while and that means Guerrero is going to play the authority figure role on Smackdown, that’s addition by subtraction.
Other thoughts on Friday’s show:
There were six matches on the program (if you consider the Jack Swagger-Kofi Kingston amateur challenge a match) and I didn’t think any of them were particularly good or bad. All were serviceable. ...
It’s kind of hard to get excited about an Edge-Gabriel main event. When it was announced that a member of The Corre was going to face Edge, I was hoping for Barrett, but I also would have been happy with Jackson. At least it wasn’t Slater. ...
It was no surprise that The Corre interfered in the main event, but I was shocked that just one clothesline from Jackson was enough to beat Edge. ...
Ziggler’s commentary during the Edge-Gabriel match was better than the last time he sat in at the announce table, but Ziggler didn’t exactly knock it out of the park. He needs to loosen up and just be a complete cocky jerk. ...
The verbal exchange between world heavyweight champion Edge and WWE champion The Miz was a good tease for their match on Raw Monday night. ...
Barrett said that he was not the leader of The Corre and that all four members were equals. He then gave the other three a chance to speak, and it immediately struck me that Jackson has a ways to go on his mic skills. Until he gets better, I’d keep his talking to a minimum, because the more he speaks the less menacing he becomes. ...
I liked the booking of the match and post-match angle with Drew McIntyre and Trent Barreta. After suffering a fluke loss to Barreta last week, McIntyre scored a convincing win this time. McIntyre offered to shake hands after the match, but Barreta – obviously remembering McIntyre’s attack on him last week – punched McIntyre in the face. Kelly Kelly then came out and was angry at McIntyre, who pleaded his case to no avail. I’m starting to wonder if the end game here is for Kelly Kelly to fall for McIntyre and turn heel. That could be good if WWE chooses to go that route. ...
The amateur challenge between Swagger and Kingston was a means to keep the issue going between these two without them having them wrestle another traditional match, but the angle didn’t do much for me. I’m just glad WWE didn’t book Swagger -- whose entire gimmick is based on being a collegiate all-American wrestler – to lose. ...
The Rey Mysterio-Cody Rhodes contest was probably the best match on the show. Rhodes suffered a “broken nose” during the match, which should make for some entertaining segments going forward as the “Dashing One” deals with his facial features being compromised. ...
I like Alberto Del Rio and R-Truth, but I really don’t need to see them wrestle each other anymore at this point. ...
Beth Phoenix’s win over Layla means that she has now defeated both members of Lay-Cool in consecutive weeks. I wonder what Michelle McCool and Layla will do to avenge those losses to “The Glamazon?” Perhaps they’ll bring in an equalizer in the form of Awesome Kong. ...
Was that Michael Tarver backstage during the Long segments?

Comments
Yes that was Tarver. I was wondering why he was there

What was up with Cole mocking Striker for knowing the names of moves? I guess if WWE really needs feuding commentators I can live with it, but should they really be yelling at each other for being too good at their jobs?

I know who it was. It was kristal and bobby lashley. A couple years ago Kristal and Teddy were gonna get married, but Teddy had a heart attack. She and bobby probably took him out to show him they weren't interested. But while they are delivering a promo, Bobby lashley has a heart attack. Than Teddy and Kristal will get back together only for Kristal to cheat on him with.... Mae Young?
Wait, Vince Russo works for TNA.

Don't you think it's kind of a silly thing for them to spell it "corre"?

yes that was Tarver, do u think he too wil join the Corre???
My vote is yes, because he wasnt there for no reason...

"Was that Michael Tarver backstage during the Long segments?"
Yes it was, and he was saying "I didn't do anything"...betcha he's the newest member of Corre.
And why Corre with two Rs? That is just stupid

I really don't see the point of "The Corre" with Barrett pretty much saying he realized his mistakes with Nexus, if he realized it needed to be about THE GROUP and not just him, why did he need to have his 1 night power struggle over Nexus with CM Punk? Also why wouldn't HE take Nexus and CM Punk just turn his faction into a new group since WWE spent months getting Nexus over centered around Barrett?

Finally someone goes on the record to pay out Heath Slater. I think he sucks and it annoys me that he has a contract while talented workers like Shelton Benjamin get their marching orders. Does the WWE think he will become a poster boy for gingas?
You're dead right about Zeke. He's a big monster with a weedy voice. It's a bit embarrasing. He needs to shout into the mic or something.
What's up with the extra r in Corre? Do you think it was a typo that they ran with?

I thought Ziggler almost acted like a face in this show. Also, it's weird that they don't use Kaitlyn who won nxt in a storyline.
I would be very interested to know your thoughts on Heath Slater: I think he's the worst wrestler in the WWE roster, bad in the ring and no charisma at all.

was just about to say about the tarver backstage issue thing. Isn't the Long story line going down to a similar route of the Bret Hart attack leading to the anonymous GM on raw? is this a sign of Vince replacing his staff with automated versions?

RE: letting Jackson speak...
As soon as the first sentence or two was out of his mouth, I hit "mute"...ditto for Slater. Ugh. There's something oddly compelling yet creepy about Slater. Maybe it's the hair.
Have you heard any rumblings about the meaning behind the name "Corre"?

I liked the new group's name much better before it was revealed that it was written with 2 r's..

I don't know, but an Ezekiel Jackson clothesline leading to Edge's defeat might make sense considering the neck trauma from the week before delivered by Ziggler? Maybe the Smackdown writers DO GET IT! Nah, couldn't be.

What do you have against Slater. I think he is a pretty good wrestler. Raw didn't let them wrestler all that much, only run in and beat us someone. He has carisma and will be a up and coming star.

It was funny that Beth seemed to be battling a wardrobe malfunction during that match more so than Layla.
I think the wardrobe malfunction lost....not sure though.......

yes that was Michael Tarver. don't think there would be any explanation as to why he was there unexpectedly as nobody really seemed to acknowledge him. but good to know he's still around! maybe something will happen. hmm. time will tell.
- really liking seein Kelly Kelly w/ a more mean, serious look. fine girls always look finer wen they're mad and like i said before: she has a special kind of beauty, a rare kind of beauty so w/ her w/ this scowl on her face makes her looks even better.
- man it's strange how much WWE as a whole is shying away from wrestling whereas to now even the commentators hardly have any sort of wrestling knowledge. first on RAW wen CM Punk got Cena in that submission that Christopher Daniels has used alot and they had the audacity to say that was the Anaconda Vice. i swear to god i thought that Jerry Lawler was gonna clean up Michael Cole's mess again and correct him, but he actually went along w/ him!
the commentators look at their screen so they get the same exact viewpoint as the viewers in the audience do so for them to clearly mess that up was beyond stupid.
then go to Smackdown. Matt Striker is sayin the real names of a couple moves durin the Divas match and Josh Matthews and Michael Cole make fun of him because of it, but that's how it is sometimes wen you show your vast knowledge, ppl wanna make fun of you for because they don't know anything about anything themselves. and once again it was a situation where you think that Josh Matthews is gonna go alongside Matt Striker and follow up on him, but he joins in on the ridicule sayin "yea fugiwara-watever". it's like "wow really? so if it's not in WWE, that means it doesnt happen? if it's not in WWE, it doesn't exist?" i was really saddened by those instances and definitely ashamed of Jerry Lawler and Josh Matthews.
oh and wat the hell was up w/ the main paramedic? where in the world does he come off just screaming at ppl when they weren't doin anything? i was like "who the hell is he?" i swear to god he was screamin at ppl like he was in India durin the Great Khali shooting incident.

The WWE has made a whole lot out of Alberto Del Rio mentioning his destiny and the Royal Rumble. On this epsiode of smackdown they made a point of having him interupt Corre and blabbering about his destiny. He has come a long way in a short time but do you think he could actually win? If not do you have a guess on who will win. Kev as always your the man.

My guess is that Tarver was behind the attack on Teddy Long and that he did it as a kind of "initiation" into The Corre. What does The Eck think about that scenario?
Posted by: Andy | January 24, 2011 12:48 AM
What's the significance of calling the group "The Corre"?
Is it just a fancier way of saying "The Core" or is there more to it than that?

There is a certain someone that nobody is talking anymore at Smackdown: Kane. Let's see: he wins the World Heavyweight Championship at Money in the Bank, in July. He remains the champion for five months, beating Rey Mysterio at Summerslam and the Undertaker at three consecutive pay-per-views. He loses his title at TLC in December, then loses his rematch next week on Smackdown... And he is not seen anymore, or heard of, during the two next Smackdowns, like he's Tyler Reks! When you have a former WHC, especially a dominant heel, losing the title, how come he just disappears like no-one cares? From a kayfabe viewpoint, it's absurd. They should at least have said that he is out because of the injuries inflicted by Edge during their Last Man Standing Match...
And this is during the Road to the Rumble, which is one of these shows where Kane is always an important player, especially given that he holds the records for most appearances and most eliminations in one single Rumble... Why not just make him tape a promo from some dark and scary place, promising he would be back for the Rumble and destroy everybody? They still can do it at the last show before the Rumble, but it would be kind of short to build some anticipation... They made a great job of pushing Kane and making him a monster again, then just forgot about him. Most probably when he comes back, he will become again his usual midcard act, tagging with some Drew or some Swagger against some radom babyface association... I'd love to know what you think of his current situation, Kevin!

Do you reckon Wade Barrett intended to Corre's spelling to be a Coronation St reference?(It's just missing an .i) He is from manchester ain't he?
If so, that would open up endless crossover possibilities for creative

Anyone notice one of the Corre mention exactly what happened to Theodore Long?
Posted by: Kevin | January 25, 2011 3:06 PM
To those asking why The Corre is spelt with two Rs, it's likely so the name can be copyrighted.

I can watch Smackdown, but I cannot stand listening to Josh Matthews. He lisps badly, and acts like an arrogant know it all. He telegraphs moves with this fake rising of his voice trick - it's all so old and tired. He should go back to interviews and stay there.

I don't think Kelly Kelly should turn heel, it wouldn't suit her
