WWE Raw: The show’s most interesting angle involves ... Daniel Bryan, the Bellas and Gail Kim?
Monday night’s episode of Raw featured a match between the two world champions – The Miz and Edge – as well as a showdown between CM Punk and Wade Barrett with John Cena as special referee and Royal Rumble implications for The Nexus and Corre.
As it turned out, neither match lived up to the hype, and the only segment on the show that stood out for me had nothing to do with Sunday’s pay-per-view, and it involved – of all people – Daniel Bryan, the Bella twins and Gail Kim.
When it was revealed on last week’s show that the Bellas had a bet going to see which of them would be Bryan’s “first,” I wrote that I hoped for the sake of Bryan’s career that it would ultimately be revealed that he wasn’t really a 30-year-old virgin and was actually playing both of them.
My proposed payoff to the story line was for Bryan to score with both twins, but what WWE came up with might be even better.
The Bellas discovered Bryan making out with Kim in his dressing room and demanded to know what was going on. Bryan said that he and Kim had been seeing each other for six months but they were trying to keep it quiet. Kim then said that Bryan was only hanging out with the Bellas because he felt sorry for them since there were no more guest stars on the show and therefore they had nothing to do. Ouch.
The Bellas responded by calling Kim “an afterthought” – double ouch – and the catfight was on.
I’m interested to see where things go from here, as this could end up being a very entertaining mid-card program. More importantly, it will hopefully give the talented Kim – who truly has been treated as an afterthought in WWE – some meaningful TV time.
My guess is that the Bella twins turn heel and feud with Kim while also aligning themselves with a male heel to exact revenge on Bryan for stringing them along. Tyson Kidd would be a good candidate.
Other thoughts on Monday’s show:
The final Raw before Sunday’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view ended with a massive brawl in the ring, which was predictable and not all that effective in getting people any more excited about the Rumble match. ...
I really didn’t care for the main event match – such as it was – between Punk and Barrett with Cena as referee. The stipulation was that the loser of the match and his entire faction would be out of the Rumble match. With 40 entrants, however, I was pretty certain that there would be a screwjob ending that would allow both groups to remain in the Rumble. My guess was that Punk and Barrett would unite and attack Cena, but it actually ended up with Cena trying to pull a fast one by intentionally disqualifying both guys in an attempt to eliminate y The Nexus and Corre from the Rumble. The anonymous Raw general manager overruled Cena, however, so both groups will participate in Sunday’s match. The biggest problem I had with the angle – aside from the fact that the stipulation wasn’t adhered to, which made the whole thing a waste of time – was that Cena was so annoying when he was messing with Punk and Barrett that I thought the heels would have been completely justified if they had attacked him. ...
The match between WWE champion The Miz and world heavyweight champion Edge was OK, but I was expecting it to be a lot better. I did like the post-match angle, however. After Edge won by disqualification due to interference by Dolph Ziggler – who along with Vickie Guerrero had been sitting in on commentary – Randy Orton came to the ring and cleaned house. The crowd popped as Orton hit RKO’s on Alex Riley and Ziggler, but before Orton could get his hands on Miz, Miz clipped him in the knee with the briefcase and fled the scene. ...
Ziggler tried on commentary but he still didn’t seem comfortable. As for Guerrero, she does a tremendous job with her heel character, but ad-libbing on commentary definitely isn’t her forte either. Overall, I found the interaction between Ziggler, Guerrero, Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler to be distracting. ...
Punk introduced Mason Ryan – referring to him by that name – as the newest member of The Nexus, so Ryan apparently will not be revealed as a relative of Batista. Ryan, a native of Wales, spoke briefly and had a distinct accent. ...
While watching The Miz on this show it struck me just how good of a performer he has become. He’s learned the important lesson of when to be over the top and when to tone it down. For example, when he ran away from Orton, the subtle look of fear and concern on his face was much more effective than if he would have had a cartoonish expression. I also liked how natural Miz came across when trading barbs with Cena in a backstage segment. ...
I wasn’t wild about the bit in which the Raw GM sent out Kidd, Jack Swagger and Drew McIntyre to face Edge in an impromptu over-the-top-rope match. The stipulation was that the guy who eliminated Edge would get the coveted No. 40 spot in the Rumble match. Edge, however, managed to eliminate all three of them in about a minute. I’m OK with Kidd being fodder for Edge, but why make guys with huge upside such as Swagger and McIntyre look like chumps? ...
One guy who definitely did not look like a chump was Alberto Del Rio, who made Mark Henry tap out to the Cross Armbreaker in the tag team match that saw Del Rio and Sheamus beat Henry and John Morrison. ...
Natalya was put over strong in her WWE Divas title defense against Melina. Thanks to Melina’s unreal flexibility, Natalya’s exaggerated Sharpshooter looked awesome. The fact that Melina tapped out in a match that didn’t even last three minutes and took place on TV rather than at the pay-per-view would seem to indicate that she is still in the doghouse. ...
When Natalya delivered a hiptoss to Melina, it looked for a split second as if Melina was going to land right on her head. ...
OK, so Cole made fun of Natalya’s “size,” and Lawler made cracks about Guerrero’s weight, but no one said a word about Husky Harris’ physique? How sexist. ...
Speaking of Cole, he first announced that the match pitting WWE tag team champions Santino Marella and Vladimir Kozlov against Harris and Michael McGillicutty was for the title, but after Harris and McGillicutty won, he corrected himself and said that it was non-title. ...
Michael Tarver was skulking around backstage, just as he was on Smackdown Friday night. I admit that I’m curious as to what this is all about, but it’s hard to get too excited about anything that involves Tarver.

The fat jokes on Vickie are beyond old at this point. She has lost a ton of weight and the King isn't exactly a skinny guy himself.
As for the rest of the show, I don't know. I'm pretty bored of WWE at this point.
I'm also not exciting for 40 men in the Royal Rumble. That's way too many when we all know the list of people who might actually win it is about 7 or 8. It also made the main event stipulation boring too because we knew there was no way the two groups wouldn't be in the RR, WWE isn't going to pay 20 legends to show up and be in it I'm sure.

A pretty bland Raw overall. Any chance Triple H won't be the "surprise" entrant in the Rumble? Perhaps my memory is poor but it seems they try to pull that almost every year.

I enjoyed the Barrett/Punk special referee match. I reminded me of the classic Triple H/British Bulldog match with The Rock as guest referee. ("One...two...IT DOESN'T MATTER if The Rock counts to three!"

I have not been to impress with the past couple of weeks they been to predictable with the heels winning i like when they mix up the story line's heels one week than face next week who working for the WWE Vince Russo .

Tarver knocks out Teddy Long. He then is revealed to be the Raw GM. And now that he's the only GM standing he decides to combine both rosters ending the brand split once and for all.

Personally I loved the Cena /Barret/Punk match.Sometimes I get so tired of John playing the company Superman that I like seeing him be a violent, vengeful guy like he used to be when he was a heel every once in a while.I mean this ridiculous PG movement in the WWE has basically nuetered everyone's promos so at least let him be in the ring .But it was all nill because the GM threw it out anyway. It would have been better if he/she/it banned the "groups" from the rumble but made the individuals fight each other for a spot. B4 I go to far,Cena's comments with the Miz were atrocious. Happy to see Gail Kim coming back into the light.Melina is beyond amazing and apparently indestructable. Ziggler, much like Morrison, need some heavy mic training especially if the WWE is going to continue to push them as hard as they have been. Final thought, Alberto Del Rio is getting pushed to the top waaay to fast. It's an insult to performers like Kofi,Swagger, and Kaval(who is mentioned as a personal protest because he should still be in the company and not going the way of Shelton Benjamin, Elijah "Pope" Burke, and Mr. Anderson,Kennedy or whatever)Sorry I was so long winded.

I remember when the Raw before a PPV (especially one of the Big 4) was always a hot one. My how things have changed.

Just curious, what are you thoughts about Nunzio being used as a WWE ref now? He reffed a dark match between William Regal and Percy Watson and he was used at a house show last month in New York when some refs weren't able to make it because of a blizzard. The ending to the Barrett-Punk match was a joke. Double-DQ because of profane language? How PG does WWE have to get? It just made Cena even more annoying. Michael Cole has now passed Mark Madden and Bobby Heenan as the biggest man-loving commentator in wrestling history. Heenan's commentating made up for his man-love for Ric Flair and Madden at least had on-air respect for the wrestlers he hated. Cole bashes anyone who's facing the Miz especially Daniel Bryan any chance he can get. Speaking of Bryan, what was Michael Tarver doing outside of his lockerroom? Was it just a coincidence or was there any significance to it?

Agreed. Ending Raw with the ring filling up in a huge brawl is so tired and overdone.
Posted by: Jake | January 25, 2011 10:02 PM
I thought it was weird that Ryan spoke Welsh, then just translated it himself backstage. And give WWE credit: when did anyone think they''d say "i'm really interested to see what they're doing with Tarver"?!
Posted by: Paul in Allentown | January 25, 2011 10:42 PM
A really lackluster Raw overall and a very weak lead in to one of the major ppv's.
I'm also getting tired of all the fat jokes. Natalya is not fat. Vickie is not fat. Aren't the divas supposed to be role models for the girls watching? I get that LayCool are heels, but it goes too far. It's a replay of the nonsense that Mickie James was put through last year.
Posted by: loco | January 25, 2011 11:15 PM
I think the whole virgin thing with DB was a shot at the Bellas for thinking "vegan" and "virgin" were the same thing. This wasn't a good RAW by my standards, but I find the whole DB angle to be the most ridiculous one they have going right now. Ted Dibiase and Maryse are close in second.

I love reading your blogs man. Been fan since like a month ago when I started reading them. I check this site like twice a day keep it up I read your blogs more than I read any of my books for classes.....But I got to ask you man Why would you say Melina is in the doghouse? I'm confused by it.
RESPONSE FROM KE: She reportedly has heat backstage, and if you see the way her push has been aborted on TV, it's not hard to believe.

and any more up to date news about Awesome Kong in the WWE?
Posted by: Jay | January 26, 2011 4:49 AM
Yeah, I really hope to see more of Gail Kim soon. She can do so much more than what WWE let her do since she is back.
Posted by: Kenny McCormick | January 26, 2011 5:19 AM
In the Bellas segment, for a split second I thought Daniel Bryan was making out with Derrick Bateman... Thank god it was Gail Kim.
Posted by: zooey | January 26, 2011 5:50 AM
Gail Kim speaks? Gail Kim is part of a two minute storyline? Is this backstage at TNA? I am shocked that after 28 months of doing very little that finally Gail Kim is allowed to do something, to speak, to react, and to show the greatness that had fans loving her TNA years. Since this segment aired Monday night Ms. Kim has gained over 2,000 more followers on Twitter and she and Bryan's kiss was discussed on Twitter as one of the "top ten topics" worldwide. Gail Kim in July of 2009 said "good things come to those who wait? and maybe for us and for her .. those good things have finally come.

Mason Ryan - another Brit in WWE. Good lad. He may be Welsh, but nobody's perfect.
Posted by: Kenny G | January 26, 2011 6:43 AM
Another misuse of Gail Kim by WWE.
Posted by: Y2J | January 26, 2011 7:22 AM
WWE is dying a death with Cena as its "top guy". The minute a face makes people wish the heels would attack them means they are not doing their job right. CM Punk is a top heel, and tries his best to get fans to hate him, but Cena is so childish and pathetic, that no one wants Cena to come out on top.
Posted by: Andrew | January 26, 2011 8:21 AM
Before Raw I was thinking a good idea would be for Miz to get distracted EARLY in his match with Orton. Orton would hit an RKO on Miz and Miz would no longer be champ.
Later on in the rumble when it is time for Alex Riley to come out (maybe 35-40th) Miz would come out instead win the rumble and face Orton at Mania.
This to me seemed like more of an option when Cena said to MIz you lose and you lose your title shot...
Posted by: HiMyNameIsMike | January 26, 2011 8:34 AM
I guess the Raw/Smackdown brand split is over. Not only were there countless Smackdown appearances on the show, but the announcers weren't mentioning it. Until now, they'd make a big deal out of a cross-brand appearance. Now, nothing.
RESPONSE FROM KE: WWE pretty much abandons the brand split during the buildup to Mania.
Posted by: jvwalt | January 26, 2011 9:36 AM
Slowly but surely I have been warming up to the Miz. I never liked him on MTV and when her first came out on the WWE, he appeared to be a joke - just another reality TV guy trying to make a buck and stay somewhat famous. But with this "awesome" schtick and then attaching Alex Riley to his hip, it turned it all around. I don't like him, but I respect the job he is doing. I wish he would develop the character even further, making him the cowardly champ.
Every time I listen to Michael Cole, it makes me yearn for JR. However, at least he is better than the horrible, annoying, terrible Matt, who has taken over on Smackdown. He has a speech impediment (bad lisp) and a personality deficiency.
Posted by: Bdude | January 26, 2011 10:22 AM
Just a small correction, whilst Cole did say it was a title match before the commercial break, he corrected himself after it, before the match began. King saw it as an excuse to have another dig at him!
Posted by: Bryan Tyler | January 26, 2011 10:23 AM
Lawler is probably the last guy in WWE who should be making fat jokes about anyone.
They only filmed Tarver from the waist-up in that segment because they couldn't show the pile of soulless bodies at his feet. I, for one, see huge upside in Tarver.
Posted by: Andy | January 26, 2011 10:35 AM
This is crazy. You and I clearly will never get along! I hate John Cena as much as you like him. Yet on a rare occurrence where I actually enjoyed Cena's antics and jokes ("disqualified for excessive profanities on a PG rated show"), you actually dislike what you saw. My conclusion? You are just weird. :p
Posted by: Anonymous | January 26, 2011 11:14 AM
pretty sure Tarver took out Teddy Long and will be joining the Corre soon. You need 5 for a solid faction in my opinion.
Rest of the episode was weak.
I'm sick of the weight references to Vicki Guerrero. She's a mom, has actually lost weight, and actually is rocking a kind of MILFy body to boot.
I dont mind that kind of talk when its part of a work or gimmick like Laycool and the Piggy James nonsense, but it make not sense for the King's fat arse to making talking ish about weight.
Posted by: David McMillan | January 26, 2011 11:25 AM
Don't understand turning Melina heel, building her up for a few weeks, then tapping her out in 3 minutes clean. Maybe you don't want to give her the title back, but play it out a little better. And for crying out loud, don't give us Mrs. Undertaker again....
I thought Alberto Del Rio's flying armbar on Mark Henry was amazing. That guy is MONEY.
Posted by: Ray | January 26, 2011 12:19 PM
It's too bad the Raw GM doesn't "talk" anymore. That little stare-down with Edge would have been a lot more entertaining if Edge had given him "the crazy eyes."
Posted by: Blippitt | January 26, 2011 12:56 PM
I know that Michael Cole's fans are called the Cole miners. But is there such a thing as a Michael Cole's fan? How he become a such important character is beyond me, and if WWE make him wrestle, I'll quit.
Posted by: Howard the Duck | January 26, 2011 1:11 PM
Kev: Do you think the WWE can afford to have the Wrestlemania Main Event be anything other than Cena Vs. Orton? It seems too predictable that Cena would win the Royal Rumble, so I predict a Smackdown heal (Wade Barret) will win the Royal Rumble, and select the World Heavy Weight Title, allowing him to face Edge at Wrestlemania. Then they can find another less predictable way to set up Cena Vs. Orton. But how would they fill up a Wrestlemania card with the 2 biggest baby faces squaring off against each other? Doesn't seem like there are any other good baby faces to fight all the heals. Any thoughts?

How about Michael Tarver as the one who laid out Teddy Long and he is revealed as the last member of Corre...
Posted by: K | January 26, 2011 1:24 PM
Was shaking my head that a match between the 2 champions of their brands was relegated to mid card status because the WWE golden boy reffed a match between stable leaders just to advance a storyline.

So Bryan and Kim have been dating for six months? Bryan hasn't even been back with the WWE for six months - it's been about 5 months since he returned at Summerslam.
I suppose it's conceivable that he and Kim dated while he was in exile, but I thought the consensus among WWE creative was that if it didn't happen on TV, then it didn't happen at all.

I gasped and jumped a little when Nattie hip tossed Melina, I thought she was going to land right on her head and break her neck. Melina was a fantastic wrestler before her injury, now she's sloppy and dangerous in the ring. Eck, do you think WWE will call Amazing/Awesome Kong by that name or something incredibly stupid?
RESPONSE FROM KE: I believe TNA owns Awesome Kong. She uses Amazing Kong on indys but my guess is that WWE comes up with an entirely new name that they can trademark.
Posted by: Jay | January 26, 2011 3:20 PM
Hey kevin, this is my guess on the whole tarver, either he is in "the corre", and was on the show because "the corre" was there.
or maybe, now this is a long shot, but maybe no one can see him? The bellas walked right by him, and acted like he wasnt even there. Can't remember on smackdown if someone actually spoke to him or not. But commentators seeing him and not acknowledging him seems very strange to me, he has only been gone months, not years..
Thee other long shot is that he is running a bad luck charm angle. Both times we have seen him, something bad has happened, (teddy got knocked out, then the bellas/bryan & kim scuffle.)
But those r my guesses, what do u think kevin?

Should we just skip Royal Rumble and award it to Cena? Outside of HHH returning and winnin I can't really see any other potential winner. I'd love to see Punk win, but doubt WWE would go in that direction.

Del Rio is the best thing to hit wrestling in a while. Hopefully Kim gets a push now. The Nextes has turn into the NWO-Wolfpack
Posted by: keil | January 26, 2011 4:13 PM
yea the guerrero being fat thing is definitely old and it's weird how it's obvious that the thing that they should make fun of is her face. have you seen the close-up shots?
(Sorry, Eddie...)
Posted by: preston | January 26, 2011 4:24 PM
WWE should be ashamed. If they are running a product for mature audiences, then fine, they can make insensitive jokes, but when they are constantly censoring everything, calling the Divas role models for young girls and trying to be family-friendly, it's insulting that they call James, Natalya and Guerrero fat. In addition, none of them actually are fat! If I were Awesome Kong, I'd be wondering how long it is before I'm in a pigpen match or making out with Hornswoggle.
Posted by: tom | January 26, 2011 5:23 PM
I loved the use of Gail Kim! The insults were good and the Twins would need to be Triplets to beat Kim! I see a heel turn for the Bellas and hopefully more t.v. time for Kim. As for the King and his fat jokes.... men in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. Oh, and his "roof" looks likes it needs new shingles.
Posted by: Rebecca Hanlon | January 26, 2011 6:30 PM
John Cena should keep this schtick going. I can see him going overkill with the PG-promotion (a la Right To Censor) where he can become this annoying heel character that everyone hates. Essentially, a parody/cartoon of himself that's flipped out and taking out his revenge on the fans for being only loved by the kids after being "the company man" for years.
It's what the WWE never did with Hulk Hogan. Also, he could put Randy Orton over as the company's biggest face at Wrestlemania. This darker do-gooder version of Cena has a lot of potential.
Del Rio, Punk, or even Batista (an Evolution feud) could legitimately win the Rumble, but if Cena wins the Rumble and he's slowly going heel...consider me intrigued at how they turn the biggest face of the last 20 years (love him or hate him) the other way.
Posted by: MG | January 26, 2011 6:32 PM
I think the answer to the question in the headline is "Yep." I will take an increase in Gail Kim tv time, no matter how silly.
I also love the "Daniel Bryan, loverboy" gimmick. But even though he was in many of 2010's best matches, I still worry that Daniel Bryan is not connecting with the audience, that the WWE power players don't have confidence in him and that his clock is running out. I hope I'm wrong. He's been US champ 5 months, and what has it done for him? What good feuds for the belt has he been in?
As for the announce team, get rid of them all except Striker & Matthews, who at least have potential. Clean house, it's unfixable.
Bring back JR... maybe a coup at the Rumble! Or how about a female announcer? Why not? Something new, anything new... the current strategy of 3+ stale idiots bickering like teenagers while ignoring and/or burying the in-ring action is driving me up the wall.

The Miz being champ is making me fall out of love with the WWE. And that sir is very depressing to me.

Have to say felt a little let down with RAW this week, main event of the night was just a waste of time.
I am not a huge fan of the MIZ but will agree that he is a great character on the show, his winning matches and yes they are with some help, but it gets us talking about it and frustrated with him even more.
On another note what happened to Edge after the match he was going to destroy the lap top then CM Sucks comes out with the new nexus and starts rambling on and thats it Edge is gone, did i miss something.

"Cena was so annoying when he was messing with Punk and Barrett that I thought the heels would have been completely justified if they had attacked him".
- Mostly, I think Cena's corn is quite fun, but this was rotten corn, with earwigs in it.
"Ziggler tried on commentary but he still didn’t seem comfortable".
- I agree. He just acts like a normal pro athlete, not like an ego-driven hot head, which is what is character seems to be at all other times.
"OK, so Cole made fun of Natalya’s “size,” and Lawler made cracks about Guerrero’s weight, but no one said a word about Husky Harris’ physique? How sexist".
- Not going down well in the UK. This week, two of the most popular TV soccer presenters were sacked/resigned for making sexist remarks about female game officials. This is not quite as bad, but still rubbish. And King making fat jokes about Vickie when he is sitting beside her and evidently looks much fatter himself just makes him look like an idiot.
I am interested in the Tarver angle.

Replying to the post referring to Awesome Kong, I read somewhere she will be referred to as Colossal Kong on WWE. Time will tell if fact or fiction, maybe she took out Teddy Long and will join the Corre, maybe at the Rumble.
