WWE Raw: Double main event gets 2011 off to great start

I was looking forward to the Falls Count Anywhere Match for the WWE title between The Miz and challenger John Morrison on Raw Monday night ever since it was announced on last week’s show.

To my surprise, I didn’t have to wait long for it once Raw began. WWE put the match on first, which got the show off to a hot start and was a nice change of pace from the usual promo open. Then as a bonus, we got a second main event, a triple threat steel cage match to determine the No. 1 contender between Randy Orton, Sheamus and Wade Barrett to close the program.

Both matches were really good, especially Miz-Morrison. It was pay-per-view quality, as both guys put forth a stellar effort, and Morrison, in particular, really shined by pulling out some innovative moves.

One of the highlights of the match was Morrison setting up Alex Riley on the barricade and then getting a running start, leaping up onto the barricade with one leg and taking out Riley with a swift kick with the other. Another spot saw Morrison do a high crossbody off the top of the “W” on the stage onto Miz and Riley.

After several nice near falls, Morrison went to deliver Starship Pain onto Miz, who was lying on a table outside the ring, but Miz moved and Morrison went crashing through the table. Miz went for the cover, but Morrison managed to get his shoulder up just in time. Miz followed up by hitting the Skull-Crushing Finale on the floor for the win at about the 17-minute mark.

Both guys gained a lot of credibility here, as Morrison looked spectacular in defeat, and Miz finally attained a legitimate victory since winning the title.

As for the cage match, while it was entertaining, the outcome was predictable. There’s no way anyone but Orton was winning this match. The only question was what was going to happen with Barrett and Nexus.

Earlier in the show, Barrett and CM Punk each staked their claim as the leader of Nexus. To settle the issue, Punk proposed that if Barrett won the cage match, he would get the leadership spot, but if Barrett lost, Punk not only would lead the group, but Barrett would be forced to leave it.

Toward the latter stages of the match, a weakened Barrett climbed the cage and was seemingly on his way to victory, when Punk suddenly came down to the ring, met Barrett on top of the cage and offered him a helping hand. Then Punk double-crossed him and knocked him off the cage, allowing Orton to exit through the cage door for the win at about the 19-minute mark.

So, as expected, it will be Miz versus Orton again at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view on Jan. 30.

It will be interesting to see what happens next with Barrett. It seems logical that he would turn babyface and seek revenge on Punk for taking over the group that he started.

Other thoughts on Monday’s show:

As if two long, outstanding matches weren’t enough, viewers also were treated to an appearance by Smackdown’s Alberto Del Rio, who defeated R-Truth in a good match. There really wasn’t any reason given why Del Rio was on Raw, but it’s pointless to complain about WWE not adhering to the separate brands concept at this point. I was just happy to see Del Rio on the show. WWE clearly has major plans for him and wants to expose him to a larger audience. …

It was good to see R-Truth back on TV after a scary bout with pneumonia. …

During the Miz-Morrison match, the announcers kept saying that the falls count anywhere stipulation plays into Morrison’s strengths. Of course, as they were saying that, Riley was constantly interfering, so wouldn’t it have made more sense for it to have been a cage match? I suppose the announcers meant that the stipulation was to Morrison’s advantage because he could do his dives and running kicks from anywhere. …

The most (unintentionally) hilarious moment on the show was when Vladimir Kozlov was supposed to take a clothesline over the top rope from one of the Usos, but he got hung up on the ropes and tried several times to throw himself over before he was successful. …

The Usos ended up winning the non-title match over WWE tag team champions Kozlov and Santino Marella, which likely puts the twin brothers in line for a title match. I wouldn’t be surprised if Tamina double-crosses Marella and helps the Usos win the belts. …

The six-woman tag match pitting Natalya, Eve Torres and Brie Bella against Melina, Maryse and Alicia Fox had a surprise ending, as Torres pinned Melina. That’s a pretty odd way to build up Melina as the No. 1 contender for Natalya’s WWE Divas title. I would have bet anything that Melina was pinning Natalya in that match. …

It was interesting that Orton dropped Chris Jericho’s name during a backstage interview. I won’t be shocked if Jericho, Batista or both return in time to be on the card at WrestleMania XXVII. …

Referring to it as “breaking news,” Michael Cole announced that the injured John Cena “may possibly return to action on Raw next week.”

Gotta love John Cena finally missing an episode of RAW so soon after working an angle where he was fired, during which time he appeared on every show.

Excellent Raw in my opinion. I was in tears laughing at Kozlov.

-I could see an angle where an outcast Barrett joins forces with his former archrival Cena to take on the Straightedge Nexus Society. That would be interesting.

-Vladimir Kozlov is my pick to win the Royal Rumble. It's impossible for him to go over the top rope.

Eck, Where do you see Morrison going from here? Continuing his program with Miz or onto another upper-mid-card feud?

RESPONSE FROM KE: It's tough to say. We'll have a better indication after the Rumble.

Help me out here Eck. The idea that you can just walk out through the cage door has always seemed preposterous to me. I don't remember that being a way to win back when I was a kid; it was always pinfall or climbing out. Going out through the door seems so anti climatic and, well, duh. Such as, "why wouldn't he just go out through the door when the other two guys are down." The bookers don't do much to help suspend disbelief like this. That said, it was an entertaining enough match but I'm sick of Orton/Miz already.

RESPONSE FROM KE: When I was growing up watching wrestling in the WWF, the only ways you could win were through the door or over the top; there were no pinfalls. You're right about it being totally illogical that someone would try to climb the cage when they could simply walk out the door. It was especially preposterous that Barrett would do it in this match when he was selling an injury and could barely climb. But if it wasn't done that way, Punk couldn't have screwed him for the finish.

Kevin,

Do you really think turning Barrett babyface would work? I just can't see it. I can't see how you can turn babyface the biggest villain of 2010, that also had the biggest feud with the company and fan's top babyface. I can't see the "kids" getting behind him. They will remember all the hell Barrett put Cena through.

RESPONSE FROM KE: The biggest villains turning babyface has been a staple of pro wrestling forever. I heard some in the crowd cheering Barrett as he made his way to the ring to confront Punk. If the angle is well-executed, the fans will cheer Barrett. Heck, years ago the fans even cheered Sgt. Slaughter again after he had become an Iraqi sympathizer.

I think the most underrated person in the WWE is the person who edits the promo pieces. The crowd was completely dead last week when Punk took over the Nexus, yet the editor managed to put together a very compelling promo and whoever it is does it every week for all sorts of things. Someone needs to get that person an Emmy or something.

Chances Wade Barret comes together with new Rookies or original ousted/injured members (Bryan, Tarver, Young - heck, even Cena) to do a nWo B&W vs. Wolfpac angle?

RESPONSE FROM KE: Don't forget Skip Sheffield.

What role, if any, do you think Undertaker plays in all of this? With Nexus costing him the buried alive match, Taker will almost certainly come back to extract revenge. There has been talk of Taker vs. Wade Barrett at Wrestlemania, but that appears to be a weak matchup for the Taker's streak, at least to me.

Here's hoping Morrison doesn't get pushed to the back of the contender's line. Definitely deserves better. Maybe Jerry Lawler gets some kind of onscreen role with the two of them going after Miz?

Yes! My cousin John Cena does not appears on Raw! Thank god!
On this episode... I really don't like the way the WWE makes WWE title match and also a number one contender match. It is obviously WWE do not want to see JoMo vs. Miz at the Royal Rumble.. So pity to him... Another unlucky day to a great superstar... Thank you Orton for be the new number one contender!

Can you think of any scenario where the Miz doesn't lose to Randy Orton, to set up John Cena winning the Royal Rumble, so that we see Cena Vs. Orton at Wrestlemania? I wish there was another route they could go, just to add a surprise factor, but I don't see it happening...

Call it a Double Main Event if you will. But let's call a spade a spade. The Miz/Morrison match was a "curtain jerker" while Orton/Barrett/Sheamus was the real main event. Don't get me wrong. Miz and Morrison had a good match up thanks to Morrison doing all the work. But let's face it. The Miz isn't strong enough to main event RAW much less WrestleMania 27. The WWE needs to get the belt off The Miz ASAP.

Have to respectfully disagree with you about the cage match. Triple threats don't work very well in this style match, because there's way to many times when one of the competitors could simply run out the door while the other two were engaged. The most egregious example last night was the spot where Orton was over the top of the cage, but Sheamus had him by the shoulders so he couldn't drop down. They basically couldn't go up, and they couldn't go down. So what does Barrett do? Why, goes to help Sheamus, of course. If the WWE had a good announce team, they would have pointed out that both Orton and Sheamus kept making a rookie mistake by not going to the door when they had the chance. But they don't, so they didn't.

I think Barrett will probably just jump to Smackdown as a heel. They could use a new challenger for Edge. I think it would be an excellent idea to pair him with Drew McIntyre as the British Inva... oh, wait, how about London Braw... er, they'll come up with something.

I'm baffled why the WWE jumped the gun and put the Miz-Morrison match on last night rather then at the PPV. The Rumble is traditionally a place where the WWE will give a midcarder a boost with a title shot, or put on an odd pairing, because the Rumble match itself sells the PPV, so you don't need the big stars in the title match. Heck, if anything, taking Orton out of the Rumble dilutes that match, and makes me less interested in watching it.

Im thinking Barret joins Cena to take down Nexus but he remains a heel at the same time.

Btw do you think theyre planning anything between Natalya and Eve? After the match she gave her a long hug and kiss. Would be a weird angle in my opinion.

I've been tired of all these 'non-title' matches for years. I think what really did it was when Rey Mysterio was world champion right before he 'retired' JBL. He lost matches in 3 straight weeks to monsters then beat JBL (who'd held the title for a year, way to devalue the belt).

I don't remember if the monsters ever got title shots from those wins but I found it absolutely ridiculous. The belt is supposed to be on 'the best in the business' or at least the best cheater.

Non-title matches where a champion loses doesn't build anything up for me. It devalues the title. Every match a champion walks into should be for the title excepting maybe where both opponents are champions.

WWE has so devalued its championships these past few years to the point where I wonder how many still care about them.

You forgot one little part of the Punk double-cross: He offered Barrett a hand and just before Barrett took it, Punk ripped off the Nexus band from Barrett's arm before knocking him down to the mat. I thought that was a clever and symbolic touch to the climax.

"I don't remember that being a way to win back when I was a kid; it was always pinfall or climbing out."

"When I was growing up watching wrestling in the WWF, the only ways you could win were through the door or over the top; there were no pinfalls. "

When I was a kid growing up in the south and watching the southern NWA territories, the only way to win a "fence" match was by pinfall/ submission. Many of these matches involved a special referee or some type of enforcer ala the Flair/ Race Starcade match with Gene Kiniski as guest referee. I think this may have varied by territory/company, but as far as I remember from the WWF/E the requirement has always been to escape the cage first. One particular Saturday Nights Main Event comes to mind with Hogan and Orndorff where they both hit the floor at the exact same time. That was the old blue cage if I am not mistaken, but that has been a long time and my memory isn't what it once was.

I'm no expert but did you notice R Truth and Del Rio acting a bit "stiff" toward each other in their match. They seemed to be legit mad at one another.

R Truth also waited FOREVER to tap out to the cross arm breaker.

i love watching wwe fights continue the good works.

The cage match was not a helpful format for Sheamus who appeared to have great difficulty climbing both the ropes and the cage.

Steel Cage matches have allowed winning by escaping through the door at least since Ravishing Rick Rude faced The Ultimate Warrior at Summerslam 1990, and probably since before that.

help me out here becuase i am a little confused, but i cannot for the life of me remember anyone leaving the cage via the door so easily as orton did in 20 odd years of watching wwf/e

I liked the show. In my opinion, Miz-Morrison was an early MOTY candidate. Am I the only one who cringed when Morrison went through the table? It looked like he hit the metal piece underneath the table when it broke. When was the last time the Usos won a match on Raw? I don't think I've ever seen them win on the show. In response to your comment about Jericho, I was surprised that in the Royal Rumble commercial, they showed his face. I think he may be returning before or at the Rumble.

Kevin I am going to comment before I even read a word of what you have to say, because ths is simply a comment about the WWE and not you,I am not sure but I would guess that now that you have unabashedly jumped on the Miz bandwagon you somehow think that it is good that it was good that he beat Morrison irregardless of the fact that he has inferior talent to Morrison, since you have needed to fill the void in your life left by Shawn Michaels retirement that the Miz has for no sane reason filled for you. I am sure you have reasoned about how great the Miz is on the mic and how much he has improved in the ring, yet this has nothing to do with the fact that Morrison is without a doubt the superior talent,if I am wrong so be it I will take my medicine but the facts remain,Miz has no doubt come a long long way but to say he can carry a candle to Morrison in the ring is a fantasy,a pipe dream, and well someone reasoning what he must to make this make sense in his beloved WWE Universe,it's ok that the inferior talent in Nexus smacks around Cena but you much like Cole can no longer see any evil in anything your beloved Miz does. This just furthers the contempt many have for the WWE,you will go on and on about TNA but the WWE can do no wrong,oh sure you will occasionally dis them about say a Diva's match, but the real deal, not gonna happen, because you are sold lock, stock, and barrel that the WWE can really do no wrong. For my money at least TNA tries different things, maybe they rehash old angles (like everyone else) but they do it with new people in a newer way, perhaps not to you but to TNA fans we like it. Nut let's forget all of that and refocus back on this the Miz beating Morrison is a joke and a travesty,he has improved greatly, but so did my children between ages 2 and 12,in the real old school wrestling territory days Miz wouldn't even be allowed to carry Morrisons luggage, you know it,I know it and anyone that lived, and watched wrestling during that time know it. I am done even trying to watch WWE, the only WWE I will watch from now forward will be You Tube clips of old matches,it is beyond ridiculous anymore. If I am wrong about your opinion on this well I am,I took a chance and let the chips fall where they will, but the difference is I am tuning out,and you undoubtedly will be watching more than ever.

I remember the NWA/WCW matches being a cage from top to bottom - was just a match in a cage and there was no escape to win (this led to numerous times the door being locked by the heels and attacking the hero until the other heros could come with bolt cutters.

I always remembered WWF being an over the top or door i think. The heel always went for the door, the face always over the top.

Maybe when they used the four blue walls to form a cage it was escape only but i could be wrong.

Hey Kev, I could be wrong but in my years of watching wrestling, it usually works when a member of a heel faction goes against that faction. I.E: Randy Orton last year, Kevin Nash in 1998, Hollywood Hogan in 1999, every member of Evolution, The Rock in 1999. It would be believable that John Cena would be forgiving. At the Survivor Series last year, it seemed as though he forgave Randy Orton for punting his father. What do you think?

Kevin, I've got to take issue with your reply to a previous poster above. You said "It was especially preposterous that Barrett would do it in this match when he was selling an injury and could barely climb. But if it wasn't done that way, Punk couldn't have screwed him for the finish." Now, that's just wrong. Barrett could have tried getting out through the door. Punk could have pretended to be helping him out by holding the door open. And then Punk could have screwed him by slamming the door on Barrett as we've seen before in other cage matches. I'm with those other posters here who think the cage match was poorly booked. All three wrestlers looked like idiots for not walking out of the door whenever they had the opportunity. Not what I would consider a good match at all.

RESPONSE FROM KE: I don't think Punk opening the door and slamming it on him would have been as effective or dramatic as holding out his hand to help him and then ripping off his Nexus armband and pushing him off the cage.

Now is the time for Barrett to start a Euro stable to battle Nexus. Barrett could represent England, Drew McIntyre Scotland, Sheamus Ireland and they could pull Mason Ryan out of FCW to represent Wales. William Regal could manage them.

I'm late but It's really really still real to mr. mickfowl (whom I don't believe took his/her meds at ALL, though they should have obviously, smh) I mean if you don't like the guys' opinion then it doesn't mean you have to let it get you THAT wet honey lol! (Boy the Miz and HBK is too polarizing they need to have checks cut everytime someone gets into an argument over them)
