What the WrestleMania XXVII card may look like
Now that the Royal Rumble is in the books, we have a better idea of how the lineup at WrestleMania XXVII might look.

Of course, we still have the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view on Feb. 20 to get through, so there could be some twists and turns yet to come on the road to WrestleMania, which takes place on April 3 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
There also is a possibility of some celebrity involvement in WrestleMania, which obviously would change any preconceived ideas about the card.
Here are the matches that I expect to happen:
• WWE champion The Miz vs. John Cena
• World heavyweight champion Edge vs. Alberto Del Rio
• Randy Orton vs. CM Punk
• Rey Mysterio vs. Cody Rhodes
Here are the matches that I think could happen:
• The Undertaker vs. Wade Barrett (There has been speculation that Barrett will get the coveted slot against The Undertaker if Undertaker is indeed healthy enough to perform at the show.)
• Triple H vs. Sheamus
• The Big Show vs. Ezekiel Jackson
Here are some potential Money in the Bank ladder match participants (assuming that match will remain part of the show):
• Evan Bourne
• Daniel Bryan
• Christian
• Ted DiBiase Jr.
• Mark Henry
• Kane
• Kofi Kingston
• Drew McIntyre
• John Morrison
• R-Truth
• Jack Swagger
• Dolph Ziggler
Note: There could be some type of match pitting The Nexus against The Corre, but I can’t imagine fans would have much interest in two heel factions going at it, especially if Punk and Barrett are not involved in the match. There also will almost certainly be some type of Divas match.

Comments
I'm hoping for an old school Wargames of Nexus vs. Corre. I doubt it will happen, but...

I don't know, but it seems inevitable that there will be a Miz v Orton steel cage match.
If Undertaker is healthy, then Cena's probably the only realistic challenger. They need a main event, and that's about all I can up with. The 2 championship matches just aren't big enough to headline rasslemania. Is Batista an option? I don't think HHH can pull it off.
And I'd expect a Corre v. Nexus match of some kind.

how about the elimination chamber predictions before hand?
titles usually change on that ppv.
i have a feeling christian will be added to the del rio/edge fued.
and i like your prediction on barret vs undertaker.
i think it is definatly the best option for the business.

"There also will almost certainly be some type of Divas match."
All cards need a bathroom break.
In all seriousness though, I hope Awesome Kong will debut in time for the event.

That sounds awful. Nothing about that would make me wanna pay the ridiculous price that Wrestlemania costs.
Posted by: Josh | January 31, 2011 6:26 PM
Under that scenario is there any doubt in your mind Kevin that Del Rio and Cena win the belts?
Posted by: eric | January 31, 2011 6:40 PM
Diesel v. Taker with Michaels as ref would be awesome. I might as well keep dreaming though

If this ends up being the lineup, which is looking like a strong possibility with a few of these matches "guaranteed", does it seem underwhelming to anyone else? I wish they would do something a little more innovative, like say a "money-in-the-bank" cage match or something. It's ironic to me that MITB was an innovative idea (thanks Jericho!), and now it's kind of passe. Also, as much as like the Miz, him against Cena doesn't seem worthy of the 'Mania main event. I wouldn't be surprised if WWE turns it into a 4-way with Punk/Orton. I don't like that either though lol.

What about the IC/US titles or tag team championships?
RESPONSE FROM KE: There's no guarantee that any of those titles will be defended at Mania. Last year, only the tag title was, and that's because Big Show and Miz had the belts and they were big enough stars that they had to be on the show.

I am thinking there has to be something with Del Rio interrupting Shawn Michaels hall of fame announcement. How about HHH winning the title at the Elimination Chamber? Then we have Del Rio versus HHH at Wrestlemania with HBK as the special guest referee.
Posted by: Bob Buscaglia | January 31, 2011 8:31 PM
Mark Henry in a ladder match? That's a scary thought. The ladder could come right thru the floor of the ring.
RESPONSE FROM KE: Henry was in the MITB ladder match at WrestleMania XXV.

Add Jerry Lawler vs Michael Cole to that list. Sure looks like the King is going to get a match at Mania

Mostly agree with you, but don't forget that we now have Booker T and Kevin Nash back. I'm sure with Nash being so close to retirement, and making comments about wanting to finish his career with the WWE, that he will have some involvement in Wrestlemania. I'd also like to say that my early pick for winning MITB is John Morrison.

Awesome Kong vs Gail Kim 12 minute long dream match? Ehhh? Ehhhhhhh?!
Ah who am I kidding, that's a pipe dream if there ever was one.
Posted by: Pb | February 1, 2011 12:35 AM
Don't forget that Diesel and Big Show moment from the Rumble. A feud from them drawing on their WCW history (I'm thinking of the time Nash gave a dangerous looking powerbomb to The Giant earning the nickname "The Giant Killer") would make a lot of sense since WM is in Atlanta.

Don't you think a triple threat is likely? They usually have one at least every second year. Maybe Del Rio-Edge-Mysterio
Also, I think Orton vs Punk is a bigger match than Miz vs Cena, and hence should be the main event title match.

2-21-11 STING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After watching the preview for HHH's movie, it seems even more likely that if HHH returns, it will be as something other than a wrestler.
It seemed from the clips that he has lost an incredible amount of muscle mass. (Granted, I'm sure the video was from months ago...) I just don't see HHH jumping in the ring in his wrestling gear exposing a sub-par physique.
A lot of what turned Hunter into someone people cared about was when he started wearing those shirts that were tight around his biceps that made everyone say, "Damn, that annoying guy actually has huge guns. We should take him seriously."
I don't think he'll get the same reaction coming out looking like Michael Cole.

I keep seeing on a few blogs Brock Lesner vs Undertaker it seems like the creative team does not want Wade Barret especially if its the Undertaker final match they want a bigger draw .

I didn't get the Rumble and I'm glad I didn't. If this is the lineup for 'Mania, I will definitely not get it.
Posted by: Sean | February 1, 2011 11:04 AM
I know its only the potential Wrestlemania lineup but if it ends up being like this I wont be impressed nothing about it excites me, i'd rather see Christian face Edge not Del Rio and how many years in a row is Cena gonna be in a world title match at 'Mania???
Posted by: Danny | February 1, 2011 12:29 PM
Add Jerry Lawler vs Michael Cole to that list. Sure looks like the King is going to get a match at Mania
Posted by: Tom q --Yeah but it seems like he's gonna get in the title picture somehow. As much as I respect Lawler, Mania seems like it should be just a dream for him to be in a high profile match at this point.

Del Rio has only been around a hand full of months and he's already main eventing wrestlemania? Lot of pressure on him. He seems destined to be the next Jack Swagger or Sheamus, who were awarded the title before they were ready. Edge vs. Del Rio on paper sounds like one of the weakest main events in the history of wrestlemania. And what a huge drop off for the Undertaker, going from HBK to Wade Barrett? Unless they let Barrett win, this would be a huge waste of time. Luckily however, they still have a few months to pull this thing together, but if this will be the card for wrestlemania, it's one of the weakest ever.

Christian vs. Del Rio vs. Edge doesn't seem like a bad idea at all. If all Del Rio has enough star power to just go one on one with Edge, though, then more power to him. It certainly looks like Del Rio can draw mega heat in the build up to Wrestlemania, judging by his attack on Edge last night. I'm actually quite intrigued by where WWE is headed right now.

If ever a Mania needed a shocking ''WTF'' moment to cover up the slightly weak card, this one is it.
Posted by: Steven Gill | February 1, 2011 4:12 PM
Kev im at home right now watching Family feud with TNA wrestlers vs. knockouts with all of them in there wrestling gear I am really impressed on who intelligent most of the knockouts are with their answers.

If Sting is really coming to WWE it radically changes my opinion on Mania.
Posted by: Josh | February 1, 2011 4:32 PM
As sad as it is to say, the most obvious opponent for the Undertaker is Kane. Kane is the only wrestler... oops, I mean "entertainer"... who has consistently had the upper hand in angles with the Dead Man, and he's the only one right now who fans could actually believe as a legitimate threat to end Undertaker's WM streak.
Posted by: Andrew K. | February 1, 2011 4:36 PM
Lesnar vs Undertaker would be interesting. I like the suggestion above of Diesel vs. Taker, too, although as both of them are fairly gimpy at this stage of their careers, it might not be pretty. All I can think of, though, when it comes to Atlanta and wrestling (besides the glory days of studio wrestling and GCW) is that big, bad card that featured the end of Goldberg's win streak to Nash, by cattle prod, if memory serves. Vince is not likely to revisit that, though going back and bringing up Montreal last year makes me think he might possibly could, if he wants to 'right old wrongs'. There just doesn't seem to be a 'Wow!' match among the ones you suggest, Kevin, mostly because we see some variation of these each week. Back in the day, when jobbers filled the matches on the over-the-air TV shows, that made the Starrcades, etc. much bigger deals.

I think, after last night's Raw, it is clear Lawler will get a match. People seem to be saying with cole, but I think it's much more likely that Alex Riley will screw The King at Elimination Chamber and he'll taker on Lawler in Atlanta, possibly with Cole in his corner.

I've got a couple ideas for the Wrestlemania card:
Awesome Kong v. Gail Kim
-This would make sense from the feud that's starting it's run between Gail and the Bellas. If the twins can't get it done why not bring in someone who can. Would be nice to see this ended in a DQ, Gail getting over on the Bellas (one on one or Handicap), when Kong ends it with a run-in.
HHH vs Sheamus
-Sheamus has won KotR, and is getting a big head over it. Triple H makes his return to put him in his place.
Sting vs 'Taker
-dream match....Period
Sting vs Booker (best of WCW??)
Taker vs Kane (done to death)
Big Show vs. Diesel
-tMs

Hey Kevin, here is your comment of the week/month/year courtesy of Jon in Bradenton:
"There just doesn't seem to be a 'Wow!' match among the ones you suggest, Kevin, mostly because we see some variation of these each week. Back in the day, when jobbers filled the matches on the over-the-air TV shows, that made the Starrcades, etc. much bigger deals."
He said quite accurately and succinctly what all the wrestling fans I know have been saying for years, and what the creative teams at WWE and TNA are completely ignoring. I'm certain they'll point to the huge amounts they rake in on PPV's, but I would dare say they could make more money by having fewer PPV's and more, as Jon said, Wow matches!

I will be disappointed if Elimination Chamber doesn't feature Edge & Christian versus ADR & Dolph Ziggler. Although, maybe ADR versus Christian could find its way onto the card in the next few weeks. It would greatly help build ADR as a contender and as a hated rival for Edge.
If CM Punk versus Randy Orton and Undertaker versus Sting are set for WM27, then I have to retire my hope for Undertaker versus Wade Barrett versus CM Punk. That match would have been great to get Corre/Nexses on the card as well as get Undertaker to 19-0 while giving him less than half the work in a match. Since Barrett and Punk have their own issue, Taker could've gotten by doing less than quarter of the work in the match.
If Jerry Lawler gets a match at WrestleMania, then I hope it is in a tag match or Money in the Bank with nothing to do involving Miz or Michael Cole.

WM27 is going to suck really bad. The only way they mite save WM27 is pitting UT against Jerry Lawler. I thought the plan was to have UT make a surprise return at RR. I thought UT was to enter at #39 to Eliminate John Cena & win the RR. A John Cena vs UnderTaker rematch at WM27, think about that. Cena could most likely beat UT at WM. But instead, the WWE plan was to have Alberto Del Rio win. Now lets say Wade does face UT at WM, he would get his ass kicked into accidental coma after 5 or 10 minutes in a WM ring w/ UT. That wouldn't hype anything. So then they would have Wade win by way of "The Corre."
But then there's The King of the announce table who is he going to face at the sukest ever WM? The Wiz Kid who can't seem to think w/o going A Ri? Or will it be even worse (not WM worthy), Jerry "The King" Lawler vs Micheal "The Cry Baby" Cole? Either way that match will suck. Then ya got The Erection Squad vs Nexus Nasquik (The Corre vs Nexus w/ no leaders) which nobody really cares about. Sting vs UT would be to oldschool for our generation witch doesn't care for yesteryr when it comes to pro wrestling. The same goes for UT vs King. Who to see Jerry Lawler lose at his one & only WM match. I myself would love to that that match but... King is more likely to lose, then win. If & win UT hands HIS tourch down, he will do it by losing & most likely retireing at WM. Whoever beats HIM at WM deserves that tourch, & Mark/UT will have no problem forking it over. But he has to lose to someone young & healthy, like Andre The Giant did. Rey Rey vs a masked Cody Rhodes would be quick & pointless, but WWE is sooo f'n dumb now that they'll most likely to do anyway. WM27 is going to suck 'til it chokes. & If The WWE fails to recover &/or learn from their very first failed WM, then WM28 will be the last WM. PS- For the first time ever l DONNOT want to order WM.

I used to think the same way as some of the other posters... that WWE was just too watered down now. With Raw, Smackdown, NXT, Superstars, and a PPV every month (sometimes 2).... its hard not to see the same confrontations over and over.
But the more I think about it, I believe it has more to do with the current roster than the current schedule. WWE has been running the same or similar schedule for over a decade now.
There just isn't enough compelling superstars and storylines these days compared to when you had The Rock, Stone Cold, HHH, HBK, Y2J, Benoit, Guerrero, Foley, Angle, and guys like Taker, Mysterio, Kane and Big Show when they were younger.
Another way to look at it is this.... How many guys in WWE now, if they left tomorrow for TNA and then came back in a few years as a surprise entrant at the Royal Rumble would get anywhere near the reaction that Booker or Nash got?
I just don't think its a case of too much of a good thing. ... It's just too much of bor-ing.
Posted by: The Hurricane | February 3, 2011 12:32 PM
I was hoping John Morrision would get a shot at The Miz but seeing as JM would most likely be in the MIBLM and win it. Maybe not necessarily to cash it in that night but somewhere down the road and get a REAL champion to hold the WWE belt.
Posted by: Brandon Holmes | February 3, 2011 9:14 PM
I think it's too early to accurately predict WM matches (at least WM title matches).
After all, after last year's Royal Rumble, Sheamus was WWE Champion and The Undertaker was World Heavyweight Champion, and neither man was part of a title match at WrestleMania.
RESPONSE FROM KE: It's never too early.
