WWE Smackdown: Live show not all that lively

Tuesday night’s special episode of Smackdown, which aired live on USA Network, wasn’t bad by any means, but even with the presence of Raw stars such as John Cena, Randy Orton and The Miz, it wasn’t exactly must-see TV either.

The highlight of the show was the handicap match that pitted Cena against Dolph Ziggler and Vickie Guerrero. Of course we all knew that Cena was going to win, but Ziggler again made a good accounting of himself in a high-profile match, just as he did on Raw the night before against Cena.

Ziggler got a nice near fall after countering Cena’s attempt at an Attitude Adjustment and hitting The Fame-asser. Ziggler did fall victim to the AA moments later, however.

Guerrero really didn’t do much in the match. At one point, she tagged herself in while Cena was down and did the “You can’t see me bit,” but Cena moved out of the way as she went for a splash. Right before Cena hit his finisher on Ziggler, he thwarted Guerrero’s interference by grabbing her and kissing her (that guy has all the luck).

After the match, Cena had Guerrero up on his shoulders and was about to deliver the AA, but CM Punk ran in and nailed Cena with a chair for the second night in a row.

I’m looking forward to hearing Punk’s explanation for attacking Cena.

Other thoughts on Tuesday’s show:

The non-title match between WWE champion The Miz and Orton was good. Orton won by disqualification when Alex Riley broke up his pin attempt after hitting the RKO on Miz. I was surprised that Orton didn’t win by pinfall since the belt (that’s right, I said it) wasn’t on the line. I also expected John Morrison to get involved, but he didn't appear on the show. ...

The tag team match that saw Rey Mysterio and Kofi Kingston defeat Alberto Del Rio and Jack Swagger was entertaining. All four of these guys are always fun to watch. ...

The announcers constantly making fat jokes aimed at Guerrero during the handicap match really got annoying. Matt Striker remarked that Guerrero had “the face of Adrienne Barbeau and the body of Adrian Adonis.” Ugh. Even Michael Cole – who is supposed to be a heel and is usually complimentary of Guerrero’s looks – was joining in. It almost seems as if Guerrero is being punished for losing weight, as she is being made fun of more now than when she was heavier. ...

Speaking of Cole, he continually says that every person to cash in the Money in the Bank contract did so when the champion was vulnerable. So I guess Rob Van Dam defeating Cena for the WWE title in an actual one-on-one match in 2006 never happened. ...

Unfortunately, it appears that the Edge-Kane program isn’t over yet. Hopefully, Kane just gets one rematch for the world heavyweight title and that’s it. ...

In quickly disposing of Kaval, Drew McIntyre was a lot more aggressive than usual and also more animated with his cocky heel mannerisms. That made for a nice contrast when the “sensitive” McIntyre tried to convince Kelly Kelly that he’s nothing like the vicious guy she sees in the ring. ...

The “Christmas Carol” parody on Raw Monday night was silly fun. The bit with The Big Show as Santa Claus and Hornswoggle as an elf on Smackdown, however, was just silly. The only thing keeping this segment from being a complete waste of time was Cody Rhodes attacking Hornswoggle. It’s just too bad Rhodes didn’t show up a few minutes sooner. Since Big Show and Rhodes have now had two altercations (the first one occurred at Sunday’s TLC pay-per-view), it appears that they are going to be in a program together. Something tells me that isn’t going to end well for Rhodes. ...

Vladimir Kozlov’s reaction after getting kissed by Beth Phoenix was pretty funny. I wonder how Tamina is going to react to Santino Marella hitting on Phoenix. ...

A video package of Ezekiel Jackson announced that Jackson was “coming soon to Smackdown.” Didn’t they say on last Friday’s show that Jackson would be on Smackdown this week?

Hey, I found the show quite good, in fact.

Speaking of Punk's explanation, I don't really know it but it is quite a funny coincidence.

The Cena-Nexus feud ignited after they destroyed Cena when he was in a match with CM Punk. Now that, Cena is over with Nexus, he is having a feud with Punk?
Your thoughts?

This has been a good week for Dolph Ziggler. Although he went 0-for-2 against John Cena, he looked very strong in both matches and was part of that great segment on Raw.

"Speaking of Cole, he continually says that every person to cash in the Money in the Bank contract did so when the champion was vulnerable. So I guess Rob Van Dam defeating Cena for the WWE title in an actual one-on-one match in 2006 never happened. ..."

Kev, if Cena would have beat Van Dam that night, Cena wouldn't have left the building alive. I'd say that Cena was very vulnerable. He was in a no win situation.

CM Punk should hit Cena with the chairs a couple times then hit him with a GTS then set up the chair over Cenas body and cut a promo about how Cena shouldnt spill his diet soda.

Who wins in a street fight: Nexus or the Spirit Squad?

"[E]very person to cash in the Money in the Bank contract did so when the champion was vulnerable. So I guess Rob Van Dam defeating Cena for the WWE title in an actual one-on-one match in 2006 never happened."

I don't think that's quite right. While it was a one-on-one match, the odds were also stacked in favor of RVD that night. ECW event and arena, crowd clearly behind him (and against Cena), hardcore rules. In a way Cena was quite vulnerable.

RESPONSE FROM KE: I suppose it could be a matter of semantics, but Cole is clearly implying that everyone cashed in after the champion already had a grueling match.

Smackdown's show in Pittsburgh Dec 27th is promoting a main event cage match Edge vs Kane for the championship.

I'm a huge RVD fan but I'll admit I think it's a matter of semantics when Cole speaks about the Money in the Bank guys cashing in their chances. While Cena wasn't vulnerable when RVD cashed in his chance, Cena certainly was vulnerable thanks to Edge when RVD won.

I have to say that while professional wrestling humor is usually off-limits, I'm getting tired of the Guerrero fat jokes.

Right now, the WWE writers aren't creative enough to make this some sort of story line where Vickie goes crazy on eveyrone who insults her weight. She'd have to destroy the entire announcing WWE annoucing team.

Outside of the ring, this is a woman who dealt with her husband's personal demons for a long time and then lost him. The amount of stress she had to be under is tremendous and many people stuggle with weight under those circumstances. Lord knows it's not the easiest thing in the world to get the weight off.

But through everything and her constantly being insulted via her character in WWE, she did it and she deserves due credit for it.

If the WWE wants to market to a young demographic, what does it say when someout built like Guerrero is constantly put out there as being "obese"? When WWE did that to Mickie James, I couldn't believe it either.

If the WWE was so concerned about not offending people, they really need to think this through. Even though she is a heel (and a very good one), WWE is wasting an opportunity to potray her to all their young female fans as being a positive role model. They could be making a statement that you don't have to look like Maryse to be considered attractive and that with hard work they can get in better shape.

Too many kids out there who are barely overweight or obese take so much heat in schools every day and it leaves scars that almost never go away. And the WWE is sending a horrible message with these jokes. You don't think some kids watching RAW or last night's show took some of those jokes made by their "heroes" and used them on classmates the next day?

WWE should be ashamed of themselves. I guess that goes to show how good the current WWE writing staff when all they can come up with is fat jokes that can be very hurtful to the people they are marketing toward. I hope John Cena goes on a Make-a-Wish trip and a sick kid tells him someone used his Guerrero fat jokes against him and it really hurt his feelings. Maybe then WWE will think twice before they put out such drivel.

I guess fat jokes and poor taste in general are still OK even in the PG era.

What's the deal with Ezekiel Jackson already? Seems they don't quite know what to do with him. I can understand why. Not much there in the all important charisma department. Can he possibly be clean and not using steriods or equivalent somehow?

I wish Cena would stay fired a bit so we only have to see him do the same bits perhaps just once a week instead of three.

Finally, I have to get something off my chest. Because I have such great respect for anyone who gets in the ring, I don’t harshly criticize wrestlers that often. But in the case of The Miz, I am making an exception. I just don’t see anything remotely entertaining about this guy. If he hadn’t been on MTV’s The Real World, would WWE have even given him the time of day? You would think someone with such an annoying personality would be a great heel, but The Miz doesn’t make me love to hate him, he just makes me want to turn the channel. His work in the ring is average at best, his catchphrase is lame, and when I say his look is strictly mid-card, I’m talking mid-card at an indy show.

It seems like WWE was trying to make him a babyface a couple weeks ago, but now he appears to be a heel again. I’m just hoping that the angle in which the members of Extreme Expose have a crush on The Miz ends with the revelation that the women were just stringing him along and setting him up for some form of humiliation. Then again, is The Miz even capable of suffering humiliation?

just flicking through a few posts from years ago... brilliant!! how wrong could we all be..

Just want to say many thanks for the blog kev. Big love from oxford, England

Cena battling a legit heel like CM Punk should make for a fun Road To Wrestlemania. And by the way a note to the WWE Creative Team: Keep pushing Dolph Ziggler. The guy tells a great story in the ring.

The Christmas wishes of many were answered by Cody Rhodes when he smashed Hoeschwizzle with the chair. If only he finished what Swagger's Eagle had started, then we would all have a good holiday.

I wonder if CM Punk is the new face of Nexus because he been defending Wade and the group the past few weeks i guess he wants to make an impact with face of the WWE and have a shot a the title .

Kervin,

Punk probably had 1 of 2 motivations for attacking Cena:

1) the whole attack that happened when it was Punk vs Cena on Raw - Punk got attacked as part of that

2) Cena spilled his soda at ringside

what do you think?

I'm gonna have to disagree with you on the BigShow hornswoggle segment. Sure, it had swoggle in it and that's never a good thing but dude, Rosa Mendes! I'll put up with the little guy if it means more Rosa on my TV.

@Glutimus Maximus,

I think the reason for the attacks will be that Cena beat Punk for the superstar of the year award a few years back which cost him another Slammy.

I think Punk Vs Cena is fresh and has the makings of a long feud. As a fan, this is an interesting feud because you have two polar opposites in terms of personalities, but both great on the mic.

I like both shows having a 3 man booth so I would like to see a guy like William Regal, get a shot at the announcing job. He's smooth on the mic and would be an interesting guy to go between King and Cole. He's wasted in his current role.

@Mark H.,

I agree with you 100%. I think the message is wrong especially when they are going after the PG crowd. Vickie is a heel, I get it, but the fat jokes have been going on since The Game was on Smackdown. I am in the minority, but I am glad HHH has been gone so long. I don't miss his lame jokes or his wrestling. He was great at one point, but that ship has sailed. He needs to put over the younger guys, but unless they are his pals, that wont happen. I also wouldn't be shocked if he's the one behind the fat jokes. Vickie gets more heat than any heel on either show so they could show her some love instead of these lame jokes that don't even match her physique.

@Kev,

Any chance you think we see a 3 way match between Orton, Morrison and The Miz at the Rumble? Seems like Orton is too involved with The Miz for it to end without one more big match.

I agree with you that it looks like one more Kane Vs Edge match (probably at the Rumble). It doesn't seem like the WWE has anyone on the Smackdown roster for Edge to feud with so I am hoping that Ziggler will be the guy. They have Vickie in common plus Edge fairs better against someone more athletic. Kane and Edge have zero in ring chemistry in my opinion.

I saw Adrian Adonis not long ago on ESPN Classic, trust me she's never been as bad as Adonis.
