WWE Smackdown: It’s the ‘wrestling for dummies’ edition
Edge and Kane may be adversaries, but they did agree on one thing on Smackdown Friday night: Both said that Paul Bearer being held hostage by Edge “has gone on too long.”
At that moment, I had a glimmer of hope that the torment was going to end – I’m talking about mine as well as Bearer’s. Unfortunately, the boring, inane story line continued throughout the show.
After Edge pulled more bait-and-switches in which he teased that he was going to release Bearer only to have Kane find a dummy rather than the real Bearer, I felt dumber for having watched it.
And since the show ended with Bearer still being held captive by Edge, it looks as if viewers are in store for more Bearer dummies being abused (not in the Katie Vick sense, thank God), more angry huffing and puffing from Kane as he chases the elusive Edge and the wheelchair-bound Bearer and more of Bearer wailing, “Kane, I’m here, Kane.”
Please, stop the pain.
Other thoughts on Friday’s show:
Speaking of the Katie Vick story line, has anyone in wrestling been involved in more horrendous angles than Kane? And what happened to Edge’s crusade against all things stupid in WWE? It appears that Edge has become the Ultimate Hypocrite. ...
By virtue of his victory over Kane in a non-title match, Edge got to choose the stipulation for their world heavyweight bout at the pay-per-view on Dec. 19. Hmm, let’s see. The show is called TLC (tables, ladders and chairs) and Edge’s specialty is a TLC match. I got it – a Paul Bearer on a pole match, right? Oh, sorry. I thought I was watching TNA Impact there for a second. ...
Edge got the victory because Kane was distracted when Bearer suddenly appeared on the video screen in the middle of the match. So how exactly did Bearer just show up on the screen like that? This story line has been so nonsensical that it seems like the writers don’t even care about trying to get viewers to suspend disbelief. I would have had Edge say something about having friends in the production truck or something along those lines. Any explanation is better than nothing. ...
I knew right away that the person in the wheelchair with his back to the camera in the final segment wasn’t Bearer. Apparently, so did the guy in the crowd who was clearly heard saying, “It’s not Paul,” as Kane walked up the ramp to the figure in the wheelchair. ...
If forcing us to watch the Bearer kidnapping saga the past few weeks wasn’t bad enough, WWE decided to put together a video package about it, including recapping what happened on this show. That, my friends, is what the fast-forward button is for. ...
Kofi Kingston and Jack Swagger followed up their match last week with another good, long bout (about 16 minutes). The match was a little slow at the beginning but it eventually kicked into second gear and featured an exciting array of near falls and counters. The match determined the No. 1 contender for Dolph Ziggler’s Intercontinental title, which kind of gave away that Kingston was going to win. I didn’t think WWE would do a heel-versus-heel match between Ziggler and Swagger. The only other probable scenario would have been the Kingston-Swagger match ending without a conclusive winner, thus leading to a triple threat match. Since we’ve already seen Ziggler against Kingston multiple times, I ‘d rather see the triple threat. ...
It looked as if Rey Mysterio’s legs landed right on Alberto Del Rio’s face when he did the legdrop off the ring apron onto Del Rio, who went through a table. ...
I liked the verbal exchange between Del Rio and Mysterio. Del Rio really has great presence on the mic. ...
The tag team match that saw Ziggler and Drew McIntyre defeat MVP and Kaval was entertaining. I would have bet anything that MVP – who was released by WWE on Thursday – would do the job since it was his last match in WWE, but it was Kaval who took the pinfall loss. Perhaps MVP requested his release after Tuesday’s Smackdown taping. ...
Cody Rhodes scored an impressive victory over Chris Masters to get some heat back after his loss to John Morrison in the King of the Ring tournament on Raw Monday. ...
Things went downhill quickly after Layla defeated Rosa Mendes. First Hornswoggle got involved in the post-match angle, and then Swagger’s eagle mascot showed up (I was hoping Hornswoggle had killed the eagle and eaten him last week). Seeing Hornswoggle and the eagle carrying on in the ring suddenly made the Edge/Kane/Paul Bearer shenanigans not seem so bad. ...
WWE NXT Season 3 winner Kaitlyn briefly appeared to announce that she is now on the Smackdown roster. No surprise there. I’m interested to see how the Ziggler/Vickie Guerrero/Kaitlyn love triangle plays out.

Edge vs. Kane in a Katie Vick on a pole match is more like it. Edge already had a simulated sex show with Lita when he won the title, why not with Katie Vick? Triple H has Steph now so he doesn't need KV anymore.

I may not hate the Kane-Edge story as much as you, but that doesn't mean I like it. It's boring, ridiculous...and doesn't do anything for either guy. Kane has seemingly thrown away the evil monster heel champ thing he had going the past several months and Edge...well let's just say Edge of 2 months ago would not approve of present-day Edge. These segments also take FOREVER and take up huge chunks throughout every show. It makes one yearn for the Kane-'Taker magical powers story.
I thought the actual wrestling on the show was fairly strong and engaging (Kofi v. Swagger esp.) but I also noticed a number of mistimed, blown or awkward looking spots (even in above mentioned Kofi v. Swagger match). For a taped show one would think they would have a "cleaner" looking product. One sequence in particular in the MVP match had him go to counter and hit a move, stop and turn around as if McIntyre was supposed to be there but he wasn't. Weird. MVP just looked lost out there. Maybe he was distracted by his desire to leave.
Del Rio is absolute money and I think 2011 is totally going to be "his" year. I could see him winning the world title after Wrestlemania and basically main-eventing Smackdown throughout the year. That is, if Rey Mysterio isn't totally put over him. I liked the promo together (opposite rungs of the ladder is always intense and dramatic) even if Rey sounded like he was high. I guess there is a reason Rey doesn't get to talk too much, but him waiting for Del Rio at the top of the ladder was a nice touch.
And good lord does Smackdown need CM Punk on the announcers team. There isn't or wasn't an interesting word uttered between the three of them. Talk about 'B' show. I have no idea how Cole and Lawler are going to coexist, but hopefully they don't string it out. End it (however they are going to end it) Monday night please.

kev, you would have to endure the kane-edge torture unless you dvr the show then watch.

I totally agree this is getting boring. Kane is my fav wrestler. But this is getting ridiculous. I think things should go back to the way they were around 2003, when Eric Bichoff was GM. Way more interesting, than this PG crap, when it was TV-14 it was wayyy better.

"[H]as anyone in wrestling been involved in more horrendous angles than Kane?"

Part of the problem, in my opinion, is that when something interesting is written for Kane, it doesn't go anywhere. Do you remember the story line in which someone dressed as Kane from years past confronted the real Kane, and was later identified by Kane as a sick b#$%^&* from his childhood? I was intrigued by that story line, but then WWE quickly blew it off. Next, there was the time when Kane, infatuated with Kelly Kelly, demanded to know who her mystery boyfriend was. Again, I was intrigued as I wondered if it were someone good (Christian?) returning to the company, and again, WWE quickly revealed the mystery man as Randy Orton and blew the story line off. Oh well. If the creative team wants the character to revolve around caskets and pyro, so be it.

Come on, you know the Eagle can't go away until they do the "Eagle attacks Swagger then we discover it's (Kingston? Edge?) wearing the eagle suit" bit.
RESPONSE FROM KE: Good point.

I really think WWE blew it with Edge. I don't know about anyone else but I was really, really excited when Edge turned face and moved to SD. He had a lot of momentum by launching a Campaign Against All Things Stupid which the fans have been demanding for years and he proved he was willing to sacrifice his own health and career for it by attacking the raw gm's computer and he teased what could have been a epic feud vrs. Jack Swagger centered around whether the SSE was stupid or not. That would have been awesome. Instead, Edge is still face but now is in confusing, overlong, ridiculous and very, very stupid segments where he stuffs brownies in another person's ear and shows off his vast dummie collection.
This storyline has ruined Edge has a face for me. Not only he is clearly evil but he is impossible for me to take seriously now. I can't look at him without wondering what he was doing with so very many dummies at the ready all the time. I hope this ends at TLC. I don't care who wins at all I just never want to see Paul tied up in a wheelchair again.

I have to agree with you on the Bearer/Kane/Edge angle, Eck.
Not only is it lame, the entire thing defies logic and common sense.
One can only suspend belief so far.
BTW Given Smackdown is taped i found it disappointing that they screwed up the timing of the final scene with the tow truck.
If was obvious that the tow truck took too long to get going given it was obviously noticeable that not only did Kane slow to a brisk walk when 'chasing' it, but he could have easily jumped aboard as it took off.
It's really sloppy and only takes away further any real credibility the storyline had.
BTW Eck, were you as disappointed as i to see the first Tyson Kidd/DH Smith match consigned to Superstars? I know neither guy is over but surely they deserved better, especially when you had ridiculous stuff like the divas match on Raw and the Layla/Hornswoggle shamozzle.

I only wonder why they brought Paul Bearer back after 6 years just for this storyline.. oh, and for the flashlight-in-the-urn stuff at Hell in a Cell.
It seems like a complete waste of wage money. Certainly not something that makes me want to continue watching. Like you, I cringe my way through every segment featuring the threesome.

Edge's crusade against all things that are stupid is what helped him turn face -- and he was quite funny with it. Certainly, he could have continued his crusade in his program with Kane and found plenty of stupid things to bust on Kane & Paul Bearer about.

I, along with the rest of America, was glad to see the return of the Eagle and his near-glorious vanqishing of Hoeschwizzle. In these troubled times, the Eagle can lift us out of our malaise and bring hope to the hopeless. Well, not really, but maybe Edge could get rid of Snoreswiggle along with Mr. Bearer. We can only hope. But please, WWE, keep the Eagle; he's so stupid he's great!

Vince Russo must be kicking himself for not being with the WWE during their gimmick match themed PPV shows. Seriously though can we end these? WWE is the only one with legitimate cool original match concepts but they insist on taking all of the fun out of them by running them into the ground on one PPV a year. Plus it was incredibly lame when Edge revealed the match stipulation when everyone already knew it was TLC because thats the theme of the PPV

I think that the eagle will be unmasked and will be revealed as Chavo Guerrero (who it's rumored to be). Then will get round 3 of the Chavo-Swoggle feud, and will give us more of Smackdown to fast forward through

Iam hoping that the swagger soaring eagle turns out to be an actual superstar and is the tag team partner of swagger. Because wwe has no tag teams anymore. Which I think sucks

what a sad episode.
People talk about some angles being "cartoony," and that definitely applies to this awful Edge/Bearer/Kaaaaaane! ordeal. It's only missing the "wannh-wannh" horn sound effects when that Wascally Edge outsmarts Kane/Fudd for the 10,000 time. Watching Kane grunt bowleggedly up and down empty arena concourses reminds me of the snackbar soda drinking competition from NXT.
Meanwhile, one week after the long-anticipated return of the magnetically dominant glamazon Beth Phoenix... and she's in the ring with Hornswoggle.
Boooo, Diva division, boooo. Not what all us Phoenix phreaks were waiting for.

Shame that MVP quit. He and Kaval had some great chemistry in the ring. They could be a break-out tag-team.
But of COURSE WWE doesn't care about tag teams so...yeah. Good choice, MVP.
Oh, and could someone fine the writers for coming up with this shark-jumping storyline of Kane/Edge? I agree, plain STUPID. Edge should spear himself. If he can at least try to do so.

wwe is becoming more and more rubbish and I think even the wrestlers of wwe are thinking that. In spite of the stand up for wwe thing where wwe employees said they loved working with wwe so many people have either left wwe or been fired. Shawn Micheals, Chris Jericho, Matt Hardy, MVP, Shelton Benjamin just to name a few. The storylines are dragging on for months and are boring people to death its the same people getting the title shots and the announcers are getting almost unbearable to listen to. Sad thing is every week we see these did you know segments trying to convince people that wwe is the best show on earth. Maybe ten or fifteen years ago it was now its just a shadow and its getting closer to dying every year.

You'll have to get Chavo out of the suit first.
