WWE Raw: Slammys show won’t win any awards

All things considered, the Slammy Awards edition of Raw Monday night could have been worse. After all, Dennis Miller could have hosted the show again.

While viewers didn’t have to put up with three hours of Miller smirking at them and making bad jokes like they did last year, there really wasn’t anything all that special about this special episode.

The “big news” coming out of the show is that John Cena was rehired. Surprise!

Before reinstating Cena, Wade Barrett said that there were two conditions: Cena would have to face him in a chairs match at Sunday’s TLC pay-per-view, and Cena would also have to wrestle David Otunga later on Raw.

So in other words, to get his job back, Cena had to agree to a match in which he gets to swing a chair at a guy he’s been dying to get his hands on, and he also has to face a guy who clearly is no threat to him in the ring. The latter part of that scenario obviously was Barrett trying to get back at Otunga for his insubordination, but the whole thing was still pretty lame.

Seriously, if there was a Slammy Award for Worst Loser Leaves Town/Gets Fired Angle, the Cena/Nexus free-or-fired story line would be a shoo-in.

Oh well, at least it’s over with. Cena is back and all is right with the WWE Universe. It’s just a shame that WWE was so afraid of alienating Cena’s fans and hurting merchandise sales that Cena never wore a Nexus shirt when he was forced to join the group and he wasn’t off TV for even a single week after being “fired.”

Other thoughts on Monday’s show:

I’m pretty sure I’m in the minority here, but I actually like David Arquette and think he’s pretty funny. With that being said, however, the former WCW world champion’s unannounced appearance didn’t really add a whole lot to the show. When he first came out and started doing an over-the-top heel promo, he was bombing almost as bad as Miller did last year. ...

The last two matches of the show were just glorified squashes, as Randy Orton defeated Alex Riley and Arquette in a handicap match, and Cena destroyed Otunga. ...

The highlight of the night was an appearance by Angry Miz Girl. WWE actually flew in the little girl who had the furious expression on her face after The Miz won the WWE title three weeks ago and presented her with the award for Fan Reaction of the Year. In classic heel fashion, Miz interrupted her acceptance speech and took the award away from her. That was funny. ...

It was a pleasant surprise to see Christian and Shawn Michaels back on TV. Christian, who underwent surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle a couple months ago, came out with his arm in a sling to present an award with former tag team partner Edge. Edge and Christian were acting like they were old buddies even though the last time they were on camera together they were anything but. Michaels was on the show via satellite to accept the award for Moment of the Year, which he and The Undertaker won for their match at WrestleMania XXVI. Michaels once again made it clear that he has no intention of wrestling again. ...

For some reason, WWE changed the nominees in several of the categories from what it had originally listed on wwe.com prior to the show. For example, I thought that Michaels and Bret Hart shaking hands should have won Moment of the Year, but it was no longer a choice when the category was announced on the show. ...

I know the Slammy Awards are not to be taken seriously, but even so, how could WWE give the award for Guest Star Shining Moment of the Year to Pee Wee Herman for that awful segment with The Miz over William Shatner’s dramatic reading of WWE entrance themes? And by the way, Herman’s “you like me” acceptance speech ala Sally Field stopped being funny about two decades ago. In another travesty, Cena delivering an Attitude Adjustment to Batista off a car and through the stage won the Holy (bad word) Move of the Year over Orton’s mid-air RKO on Evan Bourne. That was bull (bad word). ...

WWE did get some of the award winners right, including CM Punk getting the Despicable Me Award for creepily singing “Happy Birthday” to Rey Mysterio’s young daughter. During his acceptance speech, Punk mentioned that he holds grudges and would one day get his revenge on someone, but he wouldn’t say who he was talking about. Hmmm. ...

Cena taking Superstar of the Year was certainly not a surprise considering that the winner was decided by online voting. ...

When accepting his Superstar of the Year award, Cena remarked that he was a man of his word. That had to be a joke. I mean, the guy was fired but still kept showing up for work, just like George Costanza in that “Seinfeld” episode. ...

After the John Morrison-Sheamus match ended in a double disqualification after about 30 seconds, it was announced that the two would face each other at TLC in a ladder match to determine the No. 1 contender to the WWE title. Here’s my early prediction: Miz retains the WWE title against Orton Sunday, while Morrison defeats Sheamus thanks to an assist from the returning Triple H. That sets up a WWE title match between former tag team partners The Miz and Morrison. ...

Morrison getting thrown over the top rope by Sheamus onto a ladder looked pretty painful. ...

The Edge-Jack Swagger match was decent. I get tired of seeing Swagger lose so much, but Edge had to go over here since he’s challenging Kane for the world heavyweight title at TLC. ...

Once Alberto Del Rio showed up, the result of the Miz-Mysterio match was predictable (Miz got the win thanks to Del Rio’s interference), but sometimes predictable is the right way to go because it makes the most sense. ...

Barrett versus The Big Show match was an interesting match-up. Barrett walking out after a few minutes of action to lose by countout probably made some fans groan, but without his backup and with nothing to gain from the match, Barrett's actions are consistent with his character. ...

When Kofi Kingston scored the winning pinfall on Dolph Ziggler during the tag team match that also involved Daniel Bryan and Ted DiBiase Jr., I thought for sure that DiBiase was going to make the save, but he was a split second too late. ...

Cody Rhodes got a nice victory over Mark Henry. ...

When announcing the winner of the Knucklehead Moment of the Year, JTG got it backwards when he said “Lay-Cool beats Mae Young.” Poor guy hardly ever gets on TV and then when he does he blows his one line. ...

My thought on Michelle McCool winning the battle royal to become Diva of the Year: It is what it is. ...

Here is the complete list of Slammy Awards that were handed out at the show:

Superstar of the Year: John Cena

WWE Moment of the Year: The Undertaker versus Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania XXVI

Shocker of the Year: The Nexus debuts

Holy %&^*%&* Move of the Year: John Cena’s Attitude Adjustment on Batista through the stage

Knucklehead Moment of the Year: Lay-Cool gets beat by Mae Young

“And I Quote” Line of the Year: Michael Cole

Diva of the Year: Michelle McCool

“Oh Snap” Meltdown of the Year: Edge destroys the anonymous Raw GM’s computer

Despicable Me Award: CM Punk sings “Happy Birthday” to Rey Mysterio’s daughter

Guest Star Shining Moment: Pee Wee Herman versus The Miz

WWE Universe Fan Reaction: “Angry Miz Girl” Cayley

punk had to have been talking about orton from when he took him out of that scramble match two years ago

At least they didn't give any awards to the Paul Bearer storyline..

"When Kofi Kingston scored the winning pinfall on Dolph Ziggler during the tag team match that also involved Daniel Bryan and Ted DiBiase Jr., I thought for sure that DiBiase was going to make the save, but he was a split second too late. ..."

Did you notice that Ted DiBiase Jr. rolled out of the ring without tagging in Dolph Ziggler, but Ziggler ran in anyway once Kingston was tagged in, acting as if he were tagged, and later on was pinned by Kofi for the win?

Please tell me, how is this technically possible? Again, WWE has insulted my intelligence.

Pretty good show. CM Punk is doing great on commentary, inserting funny quips. Thought it was odd hearing the straight edge superstar promoting 5 hour energy during the show (I think that was him). I actually thought Miz and angry Miz girl would have gotten along; she basically has the same expression as Miz usually does most of the time.

The fact you would use David Arquette and funny in the same sentence tells me a great deal about your sense of humor or lack thereof.

I'll take Dennis Miller over David Arquette ten times out of ten.

so umm, whos punk mad at then?

I also think they had an Edge v. Swagger match to make people want to watch Edge wrestle Kane. Let's face it, the Edge v. Kane matches have been horrible. And the storyline build up has been worse. It was WWE trying to trick people into thinking Edge V. Kane will be worth watching since Edge v. Swagger was a descent contest. Swagger is priceless in helping guys have a good match that need one.

No tag team of the year? hmmm........

OMG!!!!
THE MIZ TAKIN THE AWARD OFF ANGRY MIZ GIRL WT AN A**HOLE HES ONLY JEALOUS COZ HE WON NOTHING B***ARD !!!!!!!
N HAPPI CENA IS BK
ORTON 2 TAKE HIS TITLE BK @ TLC CNT WAIT XXX

The Kingston tag match was a botched finish. Dibiase was the legal man in, must have gotten hurt on the double cross-body, and fell out of the ring. He never tagged in Ziggler, who intelligently just entered the match (as an illegal man) to take a beating from Kofi. I wonder if Dibiase and Ziggler were supposed to win that one, because Bryan looked a little confused at the ending. Either way, it was a good finish to a botched match.

Can someone connect the dots for me? Is it as obvious as it seems (another Rey/Punk program) or is there something else I am missing?

During his acceptance speech, Punk mentioned that he holds grudges and would one day get his revenge on someone, but he wouldn’t say who he was talking about. Hmmm. ...

Just wondering, how would WWE have contacted "Angry Miz Girl" to fly her in for the show anyway? Unless she was a plant all along....if she wasn't how would WWE have her family's contact info?

Also, was it me or was the crowd unusually hot last night? The "Let them fight!" chant for Sheamus and Morrison was insane! The crowd made the show much more enjoyable for me than it deserved to be.

How do you water down a ladder match? Simple- put three of them on one show.

I thought this episode was incredibly entertaining! Give some props to Tyson Kidd because even his segment was good. And the flash back of Mike Tyson and Hornswaggle was amazing.

Everyone who bought the Survivor Series pay-per-view for the Cena storyline main event has to feel cheated right now. The WWE didn't even have the balls to at least tease that Cena would be gone for good.

I'm also hoping that Morrison goes over Sheamus at the ppv for the #1 contender's spot against Miz's title. This is one tag team where both wrestlers are the Shawn Michaels.

Way to go WWE!!They took a really compelling storyline with Nexus and Cena and ruined
it with another "rushed" ending.
If Cena had been off tv or even been shown enjoying life with his family for several weeks(if he needed to be seen),they could have really developed something special. One idea is Nexus could have been running over other superstars and they banded together to get Cena involved.I'm sure there are endless things they"could"have done. This ending showed no imagination.
Also,Kev,didn't they HAVE to explain to the 9 year old what was really going on.If not, that kid could be damaged for life.

RESPONSE FROM KE: I'm sure they rehearsed it with her before the show.

Hey Kev, do you have any idea when the Anonymous GM will be revealed? Michael Cole reading off a laptop is getting old and boring. I tihnk the GM will be revealed sometime before the Royal Rumble, hopefully.

I've gotten to the point now, where most weeks I just read your reviews of Raw because I don't have the time or inclination to burn 2 hours or even waste time DVR'ing through the show, it's gotten that lame. I still watch Smackdown because I've been a long time fan of Edge, but that's about it.

I used to get every PPV, for myself and for my kids, but I've gotten to the point where I'm only going to get the "Big 4" PPVs, because the product just isn't there. I started to think maybe I was just "out growing" the WWE, but I honestly think that it's just becoming a very stagnant and lame product. There are no OMG moments anymore, either at PPVs or weekly tv shows.

Maybe the WWE has given up on catering to the late teens to adult crowd because they figure those folks are MMA people now. That, or they just have horrible script writers/storyline concept people now. However, I don't think I'd even like this product if I was 12 again. I know my kids hardly watch it anymore, and they're 12!

Even in the '80s, when I was a kid watching this and it was considered Hulkamania-kid directed programming, the product was more unpredictable and you had stuff like Jimmy Snuka getting his had bashed open by Ray Stevens and Lou Albano on the Saturday morning show.

It's just a really stale and predictable product right now with no real vision. I finally started buying MMA PPVs for the unpredictable factor. If I've finally started doing that, I'm sure I'm not the only one that is starting to put their money on that product versus the WWE product now.

This show may have been a little cheesy at times, but I commend the WWE Universe because it is giving us suspense and also making us tune in every week to see what will happen next!
THis is the reason why I started watching WWE when I was just twelve years old and am now thirty eight years old and will never stop being a fan of the WWE. Thank you!

Good review as always Kev(Big O's fan in Ohio btw).Did U see Orton's post on his Twitter saying how he too felt he was robbed of the Holy S--- Award too?

Great minds like us and him think alike.

Well, I managed to watch the majority of this show and still miss the good parts (Miz and Punk's awards). Stupid football. I guess that's why we have Youtube. What does it say that the two most memorable moments both involved heels picking on little girls?

Agree totally about Cena. The Cena/Nexus program has been odd, in that some of it has been booked tremendously, and other parts terribly. Not even having Cena off tv for a week undercut the whole thing. And Barrett doesn't even make Cena have to win a match to get his job back. I thought there was no way that the WWE could mess up the pending Cena/Barrett confrontation, but they managed to do it.

Say what you want about LayCool, but Michelle deserved to win. They are the ONLY Divas on the roster that are any good at their roles. Even Nattie and Beth struggle to connect with the audience. Just look at how badly Kelly Kelly butchered her three lines last night. As bad as the DIvas are, they'd be nothing without LayCool.

Terrible show...but with some interesting moments. I thought it was interesting that WWE allowed David Arquette to mention Eric Bischoff and say, "remember him?" Also, WWE has signed a Divas tables match? Interesting this was done right after the excellent Mickie James/Tara cage match on TNA. What's the Diva's match going to consist of? I say 2 minutes of flaunting around the ring with Beth Phoenix or Natalya going through the table as gingerly as possible.

Interesting the Christian has the GM e-mail sound on his cell phone...interesting that Edge has such a history with both the GM and Christian...

John Cena just sickens me any time he gets on TV. I can't stand how overtly stupid the free or fired angle became. It was compounded to ridiculous when John Cena gave his speech last night. Does WWE just think all fans are so stupid they'll swallow anything?

Definitely a win for TNA and a loss for WWE in my book this week. Impact blew Smackdown and Raw away.

This show was AWFUL. I don't know who is writing for WWE right now but they are doing a horrible job.

They must not care about this PPV at all because they just threw together a ton a matches at the last minute with no real build-up for them.

I actually got Survivor Series for the first time in years and if I knew this idiotic storyline between Cena and Barrett was the payoff, no way in hell I watch that show. They could have gone the Dusty Rhodes/Midnight Rider and done something amazing with it. This has been miserably handled.

It's so sad that WWE has so much talent and they continue to waste it. How can they not find good story lines for guys like Mark Henry, The Big Show, Jack Swagger, Ted DiBiase and so on? They need to create a third show and spread the talent evenly.

And the saddest part is they can't put together a half decent tag-team division. They consistently bury teams like the Usos for Santino and Kozloff? Seriously?

WWE needs to make some major changes. I think they should take their shows and create "territories" with the US, Intercontinental titles and maybe one more being the top belts for each of them and one WWE champion roaming the shows and do the same thing with the tag titles. It used to really mean something to be a belt-holder and now it's just a joke.

By taking that route, WWE could create some new matchups, keep things fresh and properly use all of their talent instead of the same 10 guys. In the territorial days (especially in the NWA), when the World Champion showed up it meant something. When someone won the US title, the Florida title, the Missouri title and so on it was important because not only were they the top dog in the area but it put them in line for a shot at the World Title. Instead of the champion focusing on one opponent, they had to focus on all sorts of different opponents and it was continually exciting and fresh.

Kevin - Instead of wasting time on shows like NXT, do you think this approach could work?

The "Nominees Video" for the Line of the Year Award was entertaining, though it was unclear who all was actually up for the award. Notwithstanding (dang, I must subconsciously miss "you-know-who" to be using that term), I too, like Lawler, don't trust that heelish Cole and want to see that envelope.

Was Big Show genuinely annoyed or just competing for next year's Slammy when he had to fetch a hand-mike to present the Big Award in his snazzy (not zoot) suit?

I give the Slammy awards and F just like the King of the Ring need to stop having a lot of 3 hour shows only important shows like tribute to the troupes is fine for 3 hours oh don't forget WWE will take USA network Raw Monday , SmackDown Tuesday , and Tribute to the Troupes on Friday .

Why do you keep watching if you hate it so much? Week after week you condemn the show. It's not the Attitude Era anymore. Time to move on man.

RESPONSE FROM KE: I condemn the show week after week? I disgaree, but I hope all the people who call me a WWE mark and say I'm biased against TNA saw your comment.

While I don't think the Slammies were as bad as all that - or good enough to staunchly disagree - I think you left out the more annoying than usual performance by Jerry Lawler. While every week I quickly tire of his performance as a saggy, baggy, perverted old man who is sadly irrelevant and pathetically attempts to assert his virility and wittiness and only succeeds in asserting the opposite - this week was worse than usual. Yeah, we're used to the terrible jokes, 1970s-era sleazy chauvinism, and inability to effectively work with any of his on-air co-stars; however, the face-to-face confrontation with Vickie just about drove me over the edge. First of all, I think she looks fabulous. Second of all, she's given birth to two children and, thus, has a right to a little weight. What is his excuse? An overwhelming affinity for Krispy Kreme? It was bad enough that I had to watch The Miz defend his title against a used car salesman, then I had to listen to him talk about "reptile dysfunction." Hilarious. I was secretly hoping Vickie would make a comment about how he must be very familiar with such things, but then I thought that would just put her on his level, and no one wants that. Really, the next time we push someone over a railing, can it be Lawler instead of Paul Bearer? Maybe Hornswoggle can jump on him a few times once he hits the bottom - it's not like Lawler hasn't had storylines with little people before.

Whew - I feel excorcised. That provided a nice catharsis ... at least until Monday.

Did anybody noticed how Maryse was about to slip while making her entrance with Dibiase?God, had she fallen on that entrance ramp, that could have very well defeated any moment of the year!!! ROTFLOLMFAO

It's funny, the only moment where I came close to thinking "wow" on Raw was when Christian used his cell phone to make the GM's sound go off. Joke's on me though I guess since the one interesting option turned out to be a ruse. I should have known better, but Christian would have made an amazing GM while he was out. I've resigned myself to the inevitable letdown that is Michael Cole being revealed as the GM. Apparently he has the power to invite people to the show since it's been a couple weeks now of "I invited them."

The cynic in me also thinks the Miz Girl was a plant the whole time. For a girl from the stands she didn't seem nervous at all and kept her scowl going just as she was coached to, not how she'd react if you put any other kid out there. They should have just left it alone.

Funny how Cena loses his superhuman powers this week after he gets his job back. It's the same guys he punked out in the parking lot, but this week he gets owned by in the ring. I give up on that whole thing though. Doesn't Barrett look like an idiot though? They could have taken him out afterall this whole time. They had him beaten in the ring, just finish him off and be done with it. There's tables and chairs everywhere. You can snap his ankle about 1,000,000 ways, break his arm or just put a chair around his neck and have Gabriel hit a 450.

You know, Michaels never acknowledged The Undertaker for the award. If Undertaker never pinned Michaels, the moment would've never happened. Then again, Michaels and Undertaker aren't really friends anyway.

Someone another site brought this up, but it could be that because of the way DiBiase rolled out of the ring, they thought that he may have been hurt. He did seem to intentionally roll out of the ring, rather than going for the tag.

Something seems wrong with Punk, health wise. He sure is loosing a lot of weight. Anyone have info?

I enjoyed Raw, it wasn't anything special but I was entertained by it. What really annoyed me though was the crowd. They were absolutely silent all night. They only popped for Cena or Orton, all else was met with silence. They even appeared to jeer angry Miz girl as she bravely made her speech & I'm certain the jeering started before the Champ had appeared. In my view they've won the slammy for worst WWE universe members of the year.

I'm glad you're on board with the 'Cena/Nexus storyline is ridiculous' bandwagon, Eck.

They had such a beautiful, creative, open ended opportunity with Nexus and sadly they screwed it up royally and mainly because they included Cena, which given his character and money generation, means there are obvious restrictions and limitations on what they can do.
They would have been far better using a more versatile main eventer like Randy Orton in the role.

On other issues, was i the only one that thought Shawn Michaels looked a little, um, rough? He looked run down and his bad eye was as prominent as ever.

I thought (and hoped) that retirement would see his health improve.

How about letting Miz win cleanly for once

"During his acceptance speech, Punk mentioned that he holds grudges and would one day get his revenge on someone, but he wouldn’t say who he was talking about. Hmmm. ..." The Nexus beat him down at the same time they got Cena the first time. Maybe??

You know, Michaels never acknowledged The Undertaker for the award. If Undertaker never pinned Michaels, the moment would've never happened. Then again, Michaels and Undertaker aren't really friends anyway.

I hope I'm not taking this the wrong way and I'm reading this right. He probably didn't get a chnace to acknowledge many, just probably told to wrap it up, but then again, some of you will ALWAYS think that HBK is THAT petty and unchanged (forgetting what happened with Bret earlier this year of course) to step his ego aside to acknowledge his peers, boy I'm glad I'm not famous or else folks will always take issue only highlight my past mishaps and deeds/ways

When I saw David Arquette on Raw I thought that Vince Russo returned to Raw. I was waiting to see Arquette win his match and be awarded the World Title.

The Divas tables match will be the biggest joke on the ppv. I guess the question is how many people in attendance willactually be in their seats watching that match and not out buying concessions or heading to the restroom. They should just make that match an empty arena match...in essence that's what it will be.

"Also,Kev,didn't they HAVE to explain to the 9 year old what was really going on.If not, that kid could be damaged for life."

How old are you? (PS. Santa isn't real, either.)

i'm very glad to have cena rehired in world wrestling universe.

"Morrison getting thrown over the top rope by Sheamus onto a ladder looked pretty painful. ..."
That just had to hurt... got to give him props just for getting up.... don't know that I've ever seen anyone bounce on a ladder like that... doing my best Ron Simmons... "DAMN"

Shatner should have won, but they gave Peewee the award because the Miz was in it, obviously..

Randy Orton got so robbed. He won holy crap moment of the year AND superstar of the year-- he really made himself this year with the crowd, and that spot with Evan Bourne was light-years of cool away from Cena hoisting rickety old Batista off a car. AND he had the best T-shirts this year. :)

Michelle McCool's presence brings down the entire show. I've seen croutons in the garbage that are not as dry as she is. Layla does most of the work while McTool works her stolen finisher. She has no talent and I wish she would just go away.

Thank you for writing such great reviews that are to-the-point. I don't always agree with your opinion, but I like that you call the matches accurately.

Keep 'em coming.

BTW, You're not a mark. Fake fans that watch and follow wrestling cynically and put down others who are enthusiastic for it are the real marks.

Hey Kev ... did you notice in the Battle Royale that Gail Kim actually made it to almost the very end being one of the last four women in the ring. Every other mass match she has done since returning 24 months ago to WWE she has been the first or second Diva to be eliminated. Things are looking up for Ms. Kim I would think.

Wanna bet???

You know...

I'm perfectly fine with the Miz not winning cleanly during any of his matches. If you think back, how often did Ric Flair win cleanly in his matches? Not often at all and he is celebrated (and I agree) as the best wrestler of our time. His underhanded tactics are even celebrated with his nickname, "The dirtiest player in the game." Jim Ross even says that the Miz is a beatable champion which is good. I'd be perfectly fine with the Miz continuing to win at all cost and cheating every opportunity he gets. That would give him more star power in my book and make him even more interesting. I think he is one of the few WWE wrestlers that can sell a match really well.

I reckon Punk (whom i this is fantastic) is talking about Daniel Bryan. It looked like they were heading into a program before Punk got injured, so Punk will no doubt say that Bryan injured him and is after revenge. Any thoughts Kev?

I think the angry Miz kid is someone child that works for the WWE and that she was a plant maybe a staff worker or an executive is my guess .

LOL at all you guys racking your brains, going way, way back in time trying to figure out just who it was that Punk was casting all of those vague threats towards on Raw. When was the last time WWE creative put any thought or effort into an angle like this? Fact is, the writers have no clue who they intend for Punk to be talking about, just like they have no idea who will fill the role of the mystery GM. They're just throwing these lame, open-ended storylines out there, without even bothering to come up with the conclusion first. Nexus' leader and agenda, anyone?! And everyone who's going as far back as Orton and Punk's beef from the scramble match some two years ago is really, REALLY stretching, here. The writers themselves don't even remember that stuff, I'll bet you.

ive waited 10 years to see david arquette get his a** kicked! that was for sure the moment of the night

I love watching Layla work. She has improved so much and it's really cool to see her transition into a polished performer. By default, Michelle McCool is the leader of Laycool but Layla has stepped up so much, I consider her to be the one stealing the spotlight. Good for her.

All I can say is HOW DID DAVID ARQUETTE EVER GET A WOMAN LIKE COURTNEY COX?!?!?!?!?!

It even less sense than the Kane / Edge storyline.
