TNA should put the world title on Matt Morgan tonight at Final Resolution

In late October, Jeff Hardy was just a couple weeks into his reign as TNA world champion and Matt Morgan was a member of Fortune, the heel group that was aligned with Hardy’s Immortal faction.

The likely plan at the time was for Hardy to enjoy a lengthy run with the championship, first defending the belt against Mr. Anderson and then moving on to the “money program” against former friend and ex-champion Rob Van Dam. Morgan was probably going to remain in his supporting role as Fortune’s enforcer for the foreseeable future.

But then Mr. Anderson was sidelined with a concussion and Hardy suddenly needed a new opponent. The decision was made to abruptly turn Morgan babyface and put him in Anderson’s spot.

It seemed as if Morgan was just a Band-Aid until Anderson returned and the original plans could be carried out. And that may indeed be the case, but I would love to see TNA alter those plans and have Morgan win the title from Hardy at tonight’s Final Resolution pay-per-view.

With Hardy still early in his reign and having recently been presented with his own custom-made championship belt, him dropping the title to Morgan would add an air of unpredictability to TNA and perhaps create a buzz.

The fans have gotten behind Morgan, who I have long thought has “it.” He’s an athletic big man with a great look and solid skills in the ring and on the stick. If booked properly, “The Blueprint” could potentially surpass guys such as RVD, Anderson and “The Pope” D’Angelo Dinero in the TNA babyface hierarchy (Kurt Angle is in a class unto himself).

Another thing that Morgan has going for him is that even though he used to work for WWE (he was there between 2003 and 2005), he is largely regarded as a TNA talent, and I think it’s looks good for TNA to have a star that it created on top rather than having a bunch of former WWE guys there.

A little over a year ago, it appeared that Morgan was on the verge of becoming a breakout star, but once Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff came to TNA and brought in the likes of Hardy, RVD and Anderson, Morgan’s momentum was halted. TNA now has another opportunity to pull the trigger on Morgan, who, at 34, is in his prime.

It’s clear, however, that Hardy is the “chosen one” in TNA, and in all likelihood he is going to get a significant run as champion. That’s fine. I’m not saying that Morgan should keep the title for any length of time if he wins it tonight. Heck, even if he dropped it back to Hardy at next month’s pay-per-view – or, for that matter, on this Thursday’s Impact – I’d be OK with it. Just having beaten a star of Hardy’s magnitude for the world title would legitimize Morgan and elevate him to another level in the fans’ eyes.

So instead of TNA pulling some groan-inducing swerve such as Anderson (who is the special referee for the Hardy-Morgan match) or rookie referee Jackson James turning on Morgan tonight at Final Resolution, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that TNA will pull a swerve that gets fans excited rather than exasperated. And Matt Morgan winning his first world title would do exactly that.

Smart, but wishful thinking. Hardy will retain. :(

Couldn't agree more Kevin. Hardy is overrated anyway.

Sadly, not going to happen. The swerve is in place. Either Morgan will be poked into doing the job or Anderson's concussion will have him realize that Immortal is the perfect place for him.
This year I have lost all faith in TNA providing compelling stories.

Kev:

Haven't you learned anything about Vince Russo? If there is a swerve that does involve Hardy losing the title you can best bet that in some convoluted, non-sensical manner either Jeff Jarrett or Russo himself will become the Champion.

Personally, I'm hoping that Shane McMahan comes on tonight and says that he just bought TNA.....now THAT would be a swerve that would get people interested in watching TNA.

Interesting. When I saw the title for this, I was all ready to rip it and say how ridiculous it is. Then I read your arguments in favor of it and thought about it and have decided it's not totally idiotic. However, that doesn't mean it's the right thing to do. I think a little unpredictability and intrigue is a good thing but Russo goes over the line with it, so much so, that his version of unpredictable becomes predictable and frustrating. So yeah, he's not to be trusted.

In all actuality, this is TNA's fault, yet it isn't. It's their fault by not backing some of their own guys enough. Like you said, Morgan was primed to bust out a year ago before Hogan-Bischoff cam aboard. By not keeping his push going and seeing his potential through to the end, they lost the chance to possibly have HIM be the Immortal monster champion instead of Hardy. He wouldn't have been the band-aid; he would have been the centerpiece of the whole angle.

But I do feel bad (slightly) for TNA in one regard. It's not their fault that their original booked storyline (and eventual money program Hardy-RVD) got derailed. You could blame them for not dealing with unprotected chair shots to the head early enough (but that's another discussion). It's also not their fault that the "band-aid" replacement has started to gain real momentum in both character and from the fanbase. Sometimes timing is everything. You can't always see when something or someone is going to get over and overshadow everything. Steve Austin, The Rock (both against and then for), Mick Foley, and many others are prime examples. I feel like that with Morgan's rise, even though we're very very early on. In that regard, you're right. TNA might be smart (or forced) to change plans and go in another direction.

The problem is that they've made SUCH a big deal about Immortalortune and Hardy as "The Chosen One" and "The Anti-Christ of Professional Wrestling" and how he's Bischoff and Hogan's boy and they'd been planning all this almost for a year. Add in Anderson's legit injury and the fact he never got his shot, as well as RVD never actually having lost the title, and suddenly TNA is in a pickle.

If I were them, I wouldn't have Morgan win yet. I would have Hardy and Immortal screw him over and then stick him at the bottom of the roster. Then I would have him proceed to destroy nearly the entire roster over the course of the next 4-6 months. Keep him involved w/ Immortal. Have Immortal keep him down and try to avoid facing him. Have Morgan go through every challenge they throw at him and have him openly challenge them every week. Have Jeff Hardy have a nice long title reign (unless he goes to jail) which they want anyway. Then by the time Morgan finally gets back to the top and gets his shot again at Hardy and the title, HE's the absolute monster babyface (ala Goldberg, Austin, etc). HE's the one all the fans want to see knock off Hardy and Hogan. And HE's the guy TNA can build as the fan's babyface champion. Monster babyface champion Morgan might not have been the original plan, but the way things have unraveled (both planned and unplanned), it's the way TNA could have its cake and eat it too.

The same could be said for TNA as it could have been said for the WWE if Morgan wins tonight just as if Lawler could have won last Monday. It might make you tune in again.

Totally agree. Morgan should win it tonight. That is the happy path for TNA. Morgan has all the tools and the right pedigree!

After Vince Russo reads this entry, chances of Morgan winning TNA world championship has gone slim for sure.

Let's just hope that there isn''t a run-in by Fourtune.. As for holding the Belt only until Thursday I, too would be happy with that. Didn't Harley Race drop the NWA belt to Tommy Rich for a reign of only a few days? Flair even dropped the belt for one day to either Inoki or the Giant Baba in Japan for the purpose of putting the guy over. Matt Morgan can put fans in the seats in my opinion. Hardy can't even speak in the ring. I am always hopeful for TNA so I hope they don't blow another opportunity.

Good thought, but you have to know it'll never happen.

For once we agree.

Your human brain cannot actually process what Russo has planned, Jeff Hardy will turn on HIMSELF. then he will compete in a ppv main event title match against his subconscious while we the privileged audience will watch the math play out via brain wave scans. The winner will then be announced on Thursday, but at 11:10 so people who dvr Impact will miss it and everyone else will be forced to watch Reaction.

If Matt Morgan is going to win the title, he's going to have to do it himself in the middle of the ring for the 1 2 3. If anyone needs TNA management's help, it's Jeff Hardy. He couldn't win without Hogan and Bischoff's help last time and he'll probably need their help again just to retain!!!

Isn't it funny how in WWE, we want more surprises, but in TNA, we want things to run more smoothly

When will Hardy just go to jail?

"When will Hardy just go to jail?"

I'm feelin that Cliff!

Eck as a journalist you must have a number or email for Russo, or at least a contact for the TNA PR people. Can you please tell him from me that he's a mug who is ruining wrestling. It's be good if you could also let him know that I hate his predictable and embrassing swerves. Oh yeah and I hope Matt Morgan knocks his head off with a real Carbon Footprint. Cheers mate.

Lets just pray that Russo never reads this, otherwise he will see the logic behind it and run away from the idea screaming.

NO SURPRISE THEY SCREWED IT UP AGAIN AS I JUST READ THE ppv RESULTS FROM LAST NIGHT. WHY I READ AND DON'T BUY PPV'S. But to be fair both Brands missed a major opportunity to create some Buz this past week.

After the stunt jeff pulled last night prior to the show, he shoulda lost it.

Hardy all the way babe!;-)
