Quick hits on WWE NXT

• I was pretty excited when it was announced at the beginning of Tuesday’s episode of NXT that the rookies were going to compete in a karaoke contest. After all, I’m a karaoke guy myself (my rendition of Elvis Presley’s “Hound Dog” always brings the house down on karaoke night). However, the segment with the rookies singing WWE entrance themes ended up being a letdown. None of the guys were any good, and most of them were downright awful, which is usually OK when it comes to karaoke, but this wasn’t a case of them being so bad that it was entertaining. Byron Saxton, who sang Shawn Michaels’ “Sexy Boy,” was named the winner, which was determined by audience reaction. Saxton was better than the other guys, but even he mixed up the words and sort of put his own spin on the song.

• Before the karaoke contest, Matt Striker said that to be a WWE superstar you have to be entertaining. Really? It hasn’t stopped Sheamus. Oh, I’m just kidding. He’s a little entertaining.

• Brodus Clay looked pretty good in the tag team match in which he and Ted DiBiase Jr. defeated Saxton and Chris Masters. Saxton didn’t do much in the match, so it was difficult to get a read on him as far as his in-ring ability. He definitely has a presence, though.

• Neither Saxton nor Clay even tried to do well in the obstacle course challenge, which was won by Johnny Curtis.

• Curtis came across well in his video. He told a story about his best friend being killed in a car accident and how he is pursuing his dream of being a wrestler for the both of them.

• Derrick Bateman showed some personality during the karaoke contest and in a backstage segment with Daniel Bryan. I could see him on Raw or Smackdown at some point as a mid-card comedy act – and I mean that as a compliment.

• Alberto Del Rio’s victory over Bateman was pretty much a squash, although Bateman did get one brief “hope spot.”

• Jacob Novak was flirting with Vickie Guerrero backstage, which seemed to make Dolph Ziggler jealous. After seeing what being in a story line with Guerrero and Ziggler did for NXT Season 3 winner Kaitlyn, Novak should be praying that it was the start of an angle and not just a random scene.

The Karaoke contest I agree so much that it could have been yet so pitiful. I think they should have given them the songs before hand, had them be popular songs and then show some backstage segments of them practicing with their Pros. now that could have really been entertaining. Brodus Clay has some real upside to him in my eyes. Really showed me some athleticism and power for such a large man. Bateman, I don't know I wanted to like him but he is more of a dork than Cole's alleged dork (who is far from it) Daniel whatever the hell they call him now, doesn't matter we all know who he is. Novak, are you kidding me I haven't seen a schnoz like that since Jimmy Durante (I'm sure you Kevin are old enough to remember him at least from old TV shows on channel 45,pre-cable). Saxton is a joke, how do they put him up to be the "Show" type guy, he is horrible,on the mic and in the ring, that BS act with Masters was ridiculous, And honestly DiBiase even was worse forcing Clay to let him get the win on a rookie after Clay had destroyed him and Masters twice, pretty weak on little Teddy's part if you ask me. Thought Clay's destruction of the course was funny, but the re-run which they let Curtis take for the win was stupid, some may say oh but he was tired, please, it isn't exactly a tough course in my eyes any of these guys that ran it would have had a HUGE advantage by giving it a second go,practice makes perfect you know. It would make sense if Bateman & Curtis' Pros had heat, then have this lead up to a tag match but Daniel & R-Truth? No problems there, so maybe they think those 2 (Bateman & Curtis) will be near the top and they are setting them up for a big revenge match, but I just don't see it in either. For my money Clay was by far the best in ring, true Curtis looked good beating Novak but Novak is never more than a midcarder unless he really takes huge strides, that are years away,O'Brian against Bateman didn't happen it was Del Rio v Bateman in this tag match and in the last week,so the kid is green, but way better than Conner, is what do we have Curts is pretty good,Brodus is really good,Bateman has some promise,O'Brien, not likely but who knows its too early to tell, Novak has the body but little else,Saxton the same with a mouth but that doesn't translate into good mic skills, frankly he is a bore and pitiful in the ring. Being brash is good if you're Ric Flair but if you're Saxton with little to no ring skills it's a joke, when Chris Masters shows you up,well enough said. So what we have here to me are 2 guaranteed workers and possibly stars,I just watched Curtis again and he is impressive, but Brodus Clay is the entire package, talks well, dresses even better out of ring, and his in ring skills are superior to everyone on this show including a couple of Pros for my money. Glad they went back to the men, it's exciting to watch young wrestlers with promise and though only a couple this season definitely has one for sure,2 fairly certain, and a couple of other possibles with some serious attitude and hard work that could get them thee. Saxton, better step up quick or he is going to be starting his personal trainer career really, really soon. Merry Christmas Kevin to you, your family and all of your readers. Peace

Hey, I wanna see that! How about uploading a video as Christmas gift for your readers? Just kidding, of course. :-) Happy holidays.
