MVP released by WWE

MVP has been released by WWE, the company announced on its website.

MVP wrote on his Twitter page that he asked for his release.

“No need for alarm. I did not get fired,” he wrote. “I asked for & received my release. I felt it was time to go international & freshen things up.”

MVP has talked in the past about wanting to work in Japan, so I’m guessing that’s what the “international” reference is about.

A change of scenery is probably a good thing for MVP (real name Hassan Assad, 37), who has been spinning his wheels for a few years now in WWE.

MVP, who made his WWE television debut as a heel in August 2006, did not get over initially despite a big buildup, but thanks to working entertaining programs with the likes of Chris Benoit and Matt Hardy, he eventually did get legitimate heel heat.

Smooth on the microphone and solid in the ring, the charismatic MVP seemed destined to be a main-event player. Whenever it appeared that things were headed in that direction, however, MVP always ended up back in the mid-card shuffle.

Too bad we have to see so many blah boring wrestlers while MVP went to the wayside.

I was never a really big MVP mark. I won't miss him. His act was getting stale anyway.

Too bad. I really thought MVP should have been an impact player in WWE.

I always thought that MVP's biggest hurdle in getting to the next level was his name/gimmick. "MVP" is, for me, too reminiscent of early '90s WWF gimmicks like Duke Droese, Doink, Sparky Plugg, and (of course) Abe "Knuckleball" Schwartz/MVP.

If and when he returns to WWE, I hope it is under his real name, or at least a believable ring name. It might seem nit-picky, but "MVP" was an outdated idea before Hassan Assad ever stepped into a WWE ring. The Undertaker, Kane, Edge, and Big Show are grandfathered in; silly gimmicks are a thing of the past, or at least they should be.

Anyway, I wish him well, and hope to see him again soon. He's a solid worker.

Well, I, at least, am surprised. I was never a big fan, but I was impressed with the guy after his work with Benoit. It seems to me that he was saddled with a dumb gimmick, but he mostly made it work. I'll be glad to never see that !@#$ Ballin' elbow again, though.

Wow, really didn't see this coming...especially after they just redid his entrance music and everything. Guess it's for the best though.

I'm glad for this because he was underutilized in the WWE.
I really don't think TNA would be good for him. Too schizophrenic. But if ROH can nab him, it could help the company and maybe they could get a basic cable deal to get a larger fanbase.

So MVP asks for his release and gets it.
Matt Hardy had to beg, fight and crawl to get out of his contract.
Is Hardy worth so much more than MVP in the eyes of the WWE officials?

The WWE has managed to fool everyone including you Kevin. In my opinion- this is a storyline, all part of MVP's recent frustrations....

I just did not rate him, so I won't miss him. I know you rated him highly Kev, but I couldn't get his character at all.

His outfit and entrance were ridiculous, and rather than drawing heat for being a heel, I think he just drew heat for being really bad.

This is a real shame. I don't know why he didn't get more of a push, but he is a talented wrestler and should have been a world champion. The only criticism I can give (and this is not even entirely his fault) is that he was a better heel than a face. The crowds just never got into him as a face (with the exception of Royal Rumble 2009 when everyone was chanting "MVP" and then got thrown out after 2 minutes of being in the match). Hopefully he will be pushed in Japan.

mvp will end up being a member of immortal i predict. do you know if he has the standard non compete clause kev?

If the international wrestling doesn't pan out...there is always TNA....or in his case becoming a host on the View.

Good for Mvp. In a way I'm happy for him. I don't watch wwe on a regular basis like I used to. Too many times backstage politics have gotten in the way of letting deserving superstars shine. John Morrison, Matt Hardy, Kofi Kingston, Christian, Gail Kim, Mvp among others.

I'm not saying that Mvp was a saint during his wwe tenure but he would have been a more interesting champion than Sheamus ever was.

What a loss for the WWE universe. They never even tried that hard to use him properly. Best wishes to MVP.

hate to say it but I will not miss him as a performer/entertainer.

Maybe absence will make my heart grow fonder.....

One of my favorites from WWE. Hopefully he comes back in the future, it sounds like he left on good terms.

He looks and acts young, but he's 37. I really believe that those who deserve the ball in WWE get it most of the time. He really didn't deserve to be more than a midcarder.

Hey Kev i hear that that the Undertaker may wrestle on a limited basis because his shoulder injury was worst than they thought and that Wrestlemania 27 is last match .

They ruined him when they turned him face. He is a natural heel in every way shape and form. The "Terrell Owens" of the WWE.... is what he WAS and they ruined it. WWE kills alot of guys steam by turning them face/heel, when its not needed.

Shame to see him go, I thought he could have made a pretty good main-eventer.

Probably a smart career move. With no changes, his character was definitely stale, and I'd love to see how he handles Japan. Otoh, is it really a bad thing to be a mid-carder in the WWE?

Damn. I don't think he can wrestle in Japan because he's a convicted felon. Hopfully ROH cause tna sucks

His character never recovered from that months-long losing streak. I stopped wondering whom he was going to wrestle next and started wondering what form his burial would next take: Boogeyman's worms? Tadpole Splash? It became such a running joke that I almost came to expect nothing else.

Better off as the heal, greedy money hungry, free agent, based of Jerry Mcguire persona... he was revamped into a " learn from my mistakes" face but the new PG WWE really didnt want to go too much into those mistakes.. i had hopes for his feud with Jack Swagger or the Miz, if this were attitude era, some racial overtones may have also help ignite the feud, but i dont really think they had anything for him. i dont even think his teaming with Mark Henry garnered one interview, or a team name, or anything... its for the best, this is the true definition of " wish him well in future endevors" i could see him return as a heel at some point

Dude was severely weaksauce. Wack gimmick. Wack finisher. Wack theatrics.

Don't hurry back.
