WWE Smackdown: Can we end the Paul Bearer hostage story line – please?
The more Edge torments Kane and Paul Bearer, the more I feel like I’m the one being tortured by having to sit through these lame segments.
On Friday night’s Smackdown, Edge’s cat-and-mouse game with Kane continued, as Edge kept teasing that he was going to return Bearer to Kane, but the show ended with Bearer still being held captive.
In a segment at the top of the show that really dragged, Edge made Kane repeatedly ask him to release Bearer. “That wasn’t very polite,” Edge said after Kane asked the first time. “I didn’t hear the magic word.” So Kane gritted his teeth and said “please.” Edge still didn’t like his tone, so Kane then asked more politely.
At that point I was the one saying “please,” as in, “Please, for the good of the game, let’s move on.”
These shenanigans went on throughout the show, climaxing with a sight gag in the parking lot, where Edge had Bearer bound in a wheelchair. When Kane made it out to the parking lot, he found a Bearer dummy in the wheelchair, and then Edge ran over it with his car (the real Bearer was tied up in the back seat).
Edge sped off in the car, so The Abduction of Paul Bearer story line will be continued for another week.
Oh, please.
Other thoughts on Friday’s show:
The highlight of the show was the King of the Ring qualifying match in which Kofi Kingston defeated Jack Swagger. These two put together an entertaining match that went nearly 20 minutes and could have gone either way. The last few minutes were especially good. ...
The three other KOTR qualifiers were OK, but none came close to the level of Kingston-Swagger. Along with Kingston, Alberto Del Rio (who defeated The Big Show by countout), Drew McIntyre (who defeated MVP) and Cody Rhodes (who defeated Rey Mysterio – with an assist from Del Rio) will represent Smackdown in the KOTR tournament, which takes place on a three-hour episode of Raw on Monday. Sheamus, John Morrison, Ezekiel Jackson and Daniel Bryan are the Raw competitors participating in the tournament. I think either Del Rio or Sheamus will win it, but Morrison winning wouldn’t surprise me either. ...
Del Rio gaining a dubious countout victory over The Big Show thanks to interference by his personal ring announcer, Ricardo Rodriguez, was an effective way to get heel heat on him. ...
After defeating McIntyre on last week’s show, MVP lost to him this week with a spot in the KOTR on the line, so the story line of MVP’s misfortune continues. ...
The Rhodes-Mysterio match wasn’t bad, but you knew the second that Del Rio came out to do commentary on the match that Rhodes was going over because of interference from Del Rio. ...
Kelly Kelly pinning Michelle McCool was a pleasant surprise. ...
Bearer called the fans “bastards” several times. In today’s PG WWE, that’s pushing the envelope. ...
Hornswoggle “killing” Swagger’s eagle mascot with a bow and arrow and preparing to make dinner out of him was beyond silly, but I’m all for it if it means the mascot is done as a character. Now if only someone would take a bow and arrow to the leprechaun. ...
Where were Dolph Ziggler and Vickie Guerrero this week?

Hey Kev, kofi Kingston was wearing a king of the ring shirt on the old school raw episode. Think the 'e' will put him over?

Wrestling Observer Newsletter has several wrestling awards. One of which is for Most Disgusting Promotional Tactic. In 2005, it was the exploitation of Eddie Guerrero's death. In 2008, it went to Jeff Hardy's stairwell attack. In 2009, it was Mickie James' weight being exploited. In 2010, I think it's gonna be this Paul Bearer hostage situation.

I agree Kevin, the Egde-Paul Bearer angle needs to go away.
All Hail King Del Rio!!

I think McIntyre will win KOTR. After starting out being billed as a future world champion, his character has stalled. Winning KOTR would give him a fresh start.
Morrison/Sheamus/Bryan/Del Rio/Kingston don't need it.
And Rhodes/Jackson are long shots at this point.

yeah yeah the wrestlers and divas all did decent work in the ring.
but as an entertaining SHOW, that episode was utter garbage.
i feel sick

I love the way they've set up this King of the Ring. They've been billing it as the launching point for great careers so it's appropriate that all participants are some of the new guys.
As for my prediction I'm going with either McIntyre or Zeke.

I haven't been keeping up with Smackdown, but the Edge/Kane program sure doesn't make me feel like I'm missing anything.
I also think Del Rio's going to win, because the king gimmick best fits his persona out of all the wrestlers involved. I think it will be Morrison and Del Rio in the final, perhaps with Sheamus costing Morrison the match.

not a surprise to me seeing kelly kelly win, is because the show was taped in Jacksonville, and she is from jacksonville, you all figure the rest of it......

Sorry Kevin! :P But I think you're going have to endure this storyline until TLC... Think it'll end then.

From past few weeks, we have witnessed WWE "pushing the envelope" several times. Is it a sign that WWE is about to drop PG rating in the near future or am I just hoping against hope?

This Kane/Edge/Bearer thing is a mess. It would make sense if Edge was the heel but it makes Kane seem sympathetic.
Still a terrible storyline though.

The WWE gave the King of the Ring winners away early in the show when they ran an ad for it. They normally do better than that. As to the Paul Bearer stuff, you are so right and I am so fast forwarding through it.

I'm also tired of the Edge-Kane storyline, but there isn't much other compelling plot to go around on Smackdown (the DelRio / Midget storyline is a little hackneyed and Big Show has had little going on lately). Raw is, comparatively, Shakespeare with the Nexus, Orton, Cena, the Miz, and Sheamus all getting major attention.
WWE needs to use Smackdown to pump up some of their mid-level talent. John Morrison could blossom with some additional top-level billing on Friday nights. David Otunga has some real potential. And even Ted DiBiase has the talent to make the Friday show more interesting. Alternatively, why not try to improve the tag team portion of the roster on Smackdown? WWE could use some tag teams that really look like distinctive teams, rather than just two guys fighting together.

Did you see the perfect spiral Kane threw when he tossed the Fake Paul Bearer head?? I say give him a walk on tryout with the Ravens!! Can you see Kane shrugging off the pass defense? The new banners would read "INSANE 4 KANE" Instead of the Chain Gang, Baltimore would have the Canaanites!!

With Mae Young swearing on Old School Raw, Alex Riley dropping F bomb at end of last Monday's Raw, Paul Bearer pointing out bastards, I don't think it's a coincidence.

"David Otunga has some real potential. And even Ted DiBiase has the talent to make the Friday show more interesting." And you're basing these assertions on what, exactly?

Hey Kevin,
I just thought about a 'could be' angle for KOTR. Lets say one of the contenders gets injured and thus not be able to compete. And Sheamus ends up winning. Then our anonymous GM chimes in and informs him about a replacement 8th entrant. And who shows up, none other than the "King of Kings", Triple H. It would provide for HHH's return as well as his feud with Sheamus.
What do u think???

I agree about Hornswizzle needing to go away, but no more eagle? Swagger blaming the eagle for his loss was great!

Don't worry Kev, they could still say the accident killed Paul Bearer. You'd still have to worry about the swerve that his Mexican cousin Paulberto has come to take his place though.
To me, that idea seems like something Eugene would come up with, but I hear we get to see Juan Cena tonight on Raw.
Sad part is that someone actually called for that exact scenario on this blog and I laughed it off thinking it was the most absolute re-tread garbage scenario out of all the possibilities for the Free or Fired stipulation. Touche Vince wherever you are. Touche.

No no no, we must have MORE Paul Bearer/Edge antics! I love the idea that during the rest of the week, Paul sits tied in that wheelchair with Edge having to give him a sponge bath and feed him and set up some kind of makeshift toilet for him. And Paul sits and watches when Edge goes out on dates or goes to the store. And what do other people thing when Edge wheels Paul in to the mall to pick up some more sunglasses? This could very easily become the next big reality show - Over the Edge with Paul Bearer. Sign me up!

A few comments on the upcoming KOTR:
-Don't be so sure that an underdog like Rhodes won't win it, Regal won the last one.
- All the KOTR hype might just be to get people to watch the 3 hour Raw, but I don't see them hyping it up just to make it a tagline on the winner's entrance. I think whoever wins it will run with the gimmick. Meaning....
- A heel will win. It is only entertaining to run with the king gimmick on a heel. My prediction is Sheamus, which then sets up a program with the King of Kings.
-Finally, I like that the KOTR coincides with the Miz winning the belt. I like the Miz and I think this gives him the opportunity to succeed instead of just putting "the company on his back" right away.

what would make sense is if Kane has been double crossed all along by Paul Bearer, who sides with Edge, Edge wins the title, with Bearer as his manager and feuds with the reunited Brothers of Destruction... just a thought, lol

Okay, I'm confused. Every post on this site has thoughtful comments from smart wrestling fans ... except that one about John Cena a few posts back. That one had almost 100 comments, mostly from what seemed to be uninformed kids with bad grammar. Did the WWE send their writers out to wrestling blogs to give the impression that kids were devastated by the "firing" of Cena? Or does John Cena really mean so much to these kids that the news of his "firing" send them searching for a place to express their frustrations? Confusing.

This Paul Bearer-Edge angle rates right up there with HHH and Katie Vick.

I could swear it was the whole MVP losing/misfortunes storyline that turned him babyface. There goes WWE again, putting the 'creative' in 'creative team'

I'm glad I wasn't the only won who heard A. Riley drop the F-Bomb while telling The Miz, "You've waited for this you're whole life, you're whole f***ing life" or however he said it.
Even though I would LOVE to see them change the ratings, I don't think A. Riley's F Bomb was officially sanctioned by WWE.
With that being said though I do really hope that the ratings change, and perhaps I'm wrong. I mean Mae Young did say "bitches" and "sluts", we shall see.

I can't believe I forgot this, but I wonder if they served the eagle with a side of Pepper?
