WWE Raw: Politics make for a strange fellow in a hospital bed
Monday’s episode of Raw was peculiar to say the least.
For starters, creepy Pee-Wee Herman was the guest star, and former WWE Diva Lita made a random cameo in a backstage segment. The most bizarre thing on the show, however, was a comedy sketch involving Vince and Stephanie McMahon, actor Freddie Prinze Jr. and the voice of Triple H.
In the sketch, Vince was in a coma and Prinze (who reportedly is once again working on the WWE creative team) was his doctor. Vince abruptly snapped out of his comatose state when Prinze mentioned that Vince’s wife, Linda, had spent $50 million on her Senate bid. Vince was wearing a bunch of Linda McMahon stickers on his hospital gown. When he got out of bed to go to the bathroom, he had a campaign poster of Richard Blumenthal (Linda’s Democratic opponent) covering his buttocks.
Suddenly, WWE cut to a shot of Stephanie sitting up in bed and saying that she just had a weird dream about her father coming out of his coma. Triple H (who supposedly was lying next to her under the covers but was not shown), said that Vince was indeed “brain dead” and still in a coma.
On Election Eve, WWE just couldn’t resist doing a politically themed skit. While some of the interaction between Vince and Prinze was funny, I could have done without having this on the show.
As for Herman, I have never found him to be the least bit funny, so I thought his long segment with The Miz and The Big Show (who was dressed in a Pee-Wee Herman outfit) was absolutely awful. Overall, this was a sub-par episode.
Other thoughts on Monday’s show:
The main event, which saw Randy Orton and R-Truth defeat Wade Barrett and David Otunga with John Cena as the referee, was good from a story line perspective, but it wasn’t much of a match. Cena called the match down the middle, but he did not see the heels make a legal tag and that allowed Orton – who was not the legal man – to hit an RKO on Otunga, who was covered by R-Truth for the win. ...
The way R-Truth stooged on Cena to Orton almost makes me think that R-Truth is turning heel. ...
I liked the Daniel Bryan-Ted DiBiase Jr. match, which was won by Bryan. The crowd was very into Bryan. ...
I was glad to see The Miz not have to job to The Big Show. Miz got in a decent amount of offense before losing by disqualification for using the Money in the Bank briefcase. By the way, why was Smackdown’s Big Show on Raw in the first place? ...
Lita showing up unannounced was a pleasant surprise. ...
Santino Marella was hilarious on the mic when he was trying to talk Sheamus out of destroying him. ...
I find Sheamus much better-suited for his current mid-card role than his previous role as a world champion and pay-per-view headliner. ...
New WWE tag team champions Justin Gabriel and Heath Slater gained some credibility with their victory over former champions The Hart Dynasty. ...
Tyson Kidd and David Hart Smith continue to not get along, but the way their inevitable split is being booked isn’t doing either of them any favors. ...
Ezekiel Jackson was impressive in his quick squash of Zack Ryder. I have long believed that Jackson has potential as a powerhouse, regardless of whether he’s a babyface or a heel. As for Ryder, well, at least he is still employed. ...
I don’t think the WWE brass gets it that LayCool mostly has go-away heat. ...
WWE ran a video package featuring former Raw guest hosts talking about what a positive experience hosting the show was. Among them was Dennis Miller, who said that people shouldn’t denigrate wrestling. That was hilarious coming from him, because I sure got the impression that he felt wrestling was beneath him when he hosted the Slammy Awards last year.

Comments
Too Bad Kev on the Pee Wee dislike because his segments were GREAT. I literally was laughing out loud watching him. Of course my kids were kids back when Pee Wee's Playhouse was a big kids hit so I knew the old routines.
So Lita isn't coming back, too bad but I didn't think it was anything more then a 1 time appearance seeing that WWE has gone so far away from woman who really know how to wrestle and gone way to far toward just having women so thin that when they turn sideways you can't see them.

Was it just me, or did it seem like Dennis Miller was gritting his teeth through that entire promo?

Lita appeared because she's been known to tell how much she loves Pee-wee Herman

OK, OK, WWE. We get it. You wanted Linda to win the Senate race. You threw boatloads of cash at the campaign. You turned your product into a watered down shell of its former self. You even went so far as to break the law.
BUT IT WASN’T ENOUGH, BECAUSE LINDA LOST!!!
So pretty please, with sugar on top… Can you turn the product back to being edgy and fun? There were some great times back then. There’s no way that guys like The Rock, Mick Foley, Triple H, and Stone Cold would have gotten over if they had been restricted in the same way as today’s talent.
To quote a legend lost in his prime, “Enough is enough and it’s time for a change!”
I really hope it can happen. It’s time for a Rasslin’ Renaissance. I know there’s no real competition. (TNA tries. They really do, bless their hearts.) But maybe this utter failure on a major scale can serve as a catalyst.
Make it happen. You’ll thank yourselves later.

Yeah I agree with your general sentiment on Monday's Raw. I felt - almost from the get-go - there was something missing almost the entire length of the show. I thought the Cena-Nexus-Orton stuff was fine from a story perspective, but was definitely a little flat overall and in the ring. From about 9:25-10:15, I was watching Raw and an episode of Superstars broke out. Slater/Gabriel v. Hart Dynasty? Sheamus v. Kozlov? MARK HENRY & Pee-Wee w/ a random Lita cameo (looking good)? Ezekiel Jackson killing Zach Ryder? It didn't feel special...it felt like a standard house show. Which would've been hard to say from about '97-'07. The whole show felt flat and too be honest, except for Jackson and Bryan, the roster looked tired. Being on the road as much as these guys can be a lot and sometimes they are just going to look exhausted and not be able to give the biggest and best show possible. They've had a big weekend and long stretch of house shows, tv shows and ppvs to do in the past couple months, and I think this past Raw was a product of that. Just my opinion.
When I was a kid I loved Pee-Wee. But that was over 20 years ago. I cringed when he came out to ring (I definitely would have kept him in the back) and he was only saved from the crowd restlessly turning on him by The Miz. The Big Show-PeeWee stuff was awful. And that skit had humorous lines, but overall was too long and nothing more than one last show for the McMahons to get Linda "over". I just don't think it was appropriate, especially before the election. Whatever. Hopefully, now that the election is FINALLY over and Linda has lost and Steph and HHH's baby has been born, they can all get back to their product, because I saw a lot of guys on Raw and in the company overall who are wandering aimlessly and need some reinvigorated creative direction. ASAP.

We need a moratorium on the "Get out of my ring" line. I heard it twice last night.

I totally agree with all you said about RAW,Kev - but how come there was no mention of John Morrison saving Santino and kicking Sheamus in the head and knocking him offstage? I would have thought that bit was pretty significant! You're right about Pee Wee though - he really is creepy. No mention of his arrest for indecent exposure on this PG show?
Posted by: The Nightmare Kid | November 3, 2010 7:55 AM
Hey Kev, Do you think the WWE will be more edgy now that Linda lost?
RESPONSE FROM KE: Time will tell, but I don't think so. The switch to PG is as much about gaining major sponsors as anything else.
Posted by: Bob | November 3, 2010 7:57 AM
Why was Triple H's appearance last week hyped as a one-day only deal? Is he not coming back to TV and going to stay behind the scenes?
RESPONSE FROM KE: He'll be back.

I predict a new story line where Vince comes back from his coma with a vengeance and takes things out on Linda.
Ah, now that's entertainment!
Thank God Linda did not win. The thought of Vince McMahon even that close to political office is enough to spell armageddon.
The McMahon's are in the right business. LEt's keep them there and make them accountable for providing some value for our entertainment dollar first. Then we can talk presidential run.....

I rarely ever disagree with your posts, but man,you missed it, how could you like santino, but hate pee wee herman, the only difference between these two, is herman doesn't have a contract with the wwe
Posted by: Bob | November 3, 2010 9:20 AM
So is the skit setting up that Vince has been in a coma all this time and that the anonymous GM is...?????

I agree, I thought the show was sub-par at best. I never thought Pee Wee Herman was funny either but I thought the segment with him in the ring was hilarious. Not because of Pee Wee but because of Miz. I honestly believe the Miz could make anybody look good who gets in the ring with him either wrestling or with a microphone. If he can make Pee Wee look funny, he can do anything!
Is it just me or is R-Truth just terrible all the way around. It never fails that whenever he comes across my TV, I just fast forward. I didn't like him in TNA and I don't like him now. I think he is horrible on the microphone and sounds like he can't string a complete sentence together. I even hate it when he comes out with Eve because we're going to see Eve do her stupid cheerleader dance moves to a horrible song that no one can understand the words to. I totally agree with Michael Cole on that one! I don't think turning him heel will matter to me...he still doesn't know how to speak well enough to give a good talking segment.
Posted by: Nathan | November 3, 2010 10:35 AM
I agree with Nathan. Miz is awesome. R-Truth is awful. Truth just reeks of mid-card, a guy who seemingly has "breakout" talent, but doesn't amount to much in the end. He is terrible in his promo delivery, his entrance theme is incoherent and cringe-worthy (Vince really thinks he can get records out of those?) and he has generally failed to show much breakout potential in the ring. A heel turn (which did seem hinted at) is fine, but I don't want him anywhere near the main event, which unfortunately, the creative team seems to want for him. In fact, I don't even think he should get as much airtime on Raw as he does. Superstars is ultimately where he belongs.
Posted by: Jeremy W | November 3, 2010 11:19 AM
Sorry but the Pee Wee segment was the tops for the night and anytime the Big Show can be on camera it's a good thing. Overall the show was the same old bland toast RAW has been for how long and will continue to be. Sorry but the days of "OMG" fun Monday RAW's is long gone...
Posted by: Drew | November 3, 2010 12:01 PM
was it me or did Mark Henry use the wrong hand during the game of Twister?
Posted by: Eric | November 3, 2010 12:24 PM
Kevin, I agree with your about Pee-Wee except on the interaction with The Miz. It really allowed Miz and Alex Riley to be pretty hilarious and i am all for that.
And for my part, I love Lay-Cool and don't think they have "go-away" heat at all.
Posted by: Andy | November 3, 2010 1:46 PM
I've got to say the best part of the show was actually getting to hear part of Zack Ryder's theme song. I honestly don't remember the last time they actually had him come out to his music on Raw (I don't watch Superstars but I'm sure he actually comes out to his music on the show). Santino cut the best promo he's had in a long time, especially in this PG world we're living in. I heard rumors that Sean Morley (Val Venis) was supposed to be at the show, so there were many times I was expecting him to come out-Santino's replacement, Orton's partner, or Henry's partner. Speaking of which, what happened to that tag team match? Henry was looking for a new partner but he didn't wrestle. Can anyone tell me when Orton and R-Truth all of a sudden became buddies? Truth has been back in WWE for 3 years, and I don't remember them even being in a segment together, let along being buddies. The tag team non-title match was pretty good, and Slater and Gabriel looked good in the match. I'd like to see a Gabriel-Kidd feud, and I know they can put on a good match. After the divas match, I am now convinced that they Natayla is going to win the title at Survivor Series. This seems like the perfect time to break them up, and Layla cost Michelle the match, which usually amounts to a breakup.

Show was there to replace Mysterio, who had to miss Raw because of an inner ear infection.
Of course, that still doesn't explain why a Smackdown star was chosen for the spot.

KEvin, I think you are right about the sponsors being a reason for the PG WWE but I cannot dismiss Linda's political aspirations as a major factor also.
So far the word seems to be that she will seek other offices in which case nothing may change with WWE rating goals.
Personally, I think the last thing we need is a mcmahon holding political office. I wish she would just forget about it, but then again I doubt her ego and aspirations will allow her and I'm sure there is still plenty of money available to try again.
BTW, anybody who thinks Linda's political aspirations is for their benefit in any way is sadly misguided. Its just another case of the rich trying to get richer. I doubt neither Vince nor Linda really care about anything so much as gaining even more power and money somehow.

Hey Kev did you hear that now Big Sexy wants back in the WWE and a shot at the Undertaker .
RESPONSE FROM KE: Yeah, I saw it. Good luck with that.
Posted by: ryan | November 3, 2010 6:13 PM
Nathan- agreed! I don't know what the hell "crunk" is, nor do I care to find out. Please speak English, sir. That man cannot cut a coherent promo to save his life.
I actually thought PWH did a decent job- he's an entertainer, and his comedic timing with Miz was right on. He was certainly better than many, many of the others they have had in the past (cowboy guy and the race car drivers come to mind....). He at least interacted with the talent well, and was decent on the mic. And, frankly, I'd rather watch him than LayCool. Blech.

Hold it, back up a bit there. So, Vince was in a coma all this time? And why was Freddie Prinze, Jr his doctor? When did he get a medical license? Must have been the same place that Isaac Yankem got his. But, was it all just Stephanie dreaming? If it was, why did we see it? Does the WWE have some new Dream-o-vision technology? Why haven't they shared this with the world yet? And why was she sleeping at 10pm on a Monday night? Doesn't she and Hunter watch Raw? So many questions from that one segment...
And the WWE needs to be congratulated for bringing back Lita for a 1 second throwaway cameo that you would had missed if you blinked. At least when they brought back Trish Stratus that one night she actually wrestled.

Peewee was great. I also enjoyed the skit with Vince. It's nice having random things on the show once in a while.
Posted by: ndugu | November 3, 2010 8:20 PM
I wanted to like Pee-Wee's segments, but I honestly felt bad for the guy. His main demographic wasn't in that audience and it showed. Jokes that would have gone over in other venues simply fell flat.
Posted by: scotty_danger | November 3, 2010 8:54 PM
Feel sorry for Zack Ryder, must be just me that thinks he is a good wrestler when given the chance
Posted by: Matt | November 4, 2010 12:06 AM
They hype plenty of things for 'one night only'. Remember when DX was returning for 'one night only' and that went on for two years or so until they were injured?
That reminds me, they made hornswoggle a mascot at one point. I'm left wondering how out of all the short wrestlers they had on Smackdown he's stuck around and been involved with just about everyone. Does he regularly commit fellatio on the board of directors?
Also, the skit about McMahon seems odd considering he's been all over the website for the past couple weeks delivering his stand up for WWE messages.
Yeah I get Kayfabe he was hurt but when he pulls stuff like that it's time for him to show up and just say, I stayed away cause I was planning something really good.
Also, if Cena goes heel I would love him forever if he punts Orton in the head a couple times. Really, why has no one ever come back from their 'concussion' and done the same to him?
Posted by: Matthew | November 4, 2010 12:38 AM
Line of the night went to Vladmir Koslov to Sheamus: "You speak funny. Now I crush you!" I laughed out loud!
Also, loved the Lita cameo.

Ok, people: we're not going back to WWE Attitude-era blade jobs for at least 15 years, because right now the goal is to get the kids hooked on the product. Now you know how adults who were watching Sammartino, Morales, Rhodes, Billy Graham and Backlund felt when suddenly Cyndi Lauper was showing up on their show with that tall goof Hogan. Generational shift.
As for why Linda ran for Senator: she ran for Senator for the same reason that Vince started the XFL, and the same reason Vince tried to get a bodybuilding promotion going, and the same reason why Stephanie and everyone involved in Creative has been going for cheap laughs and bad comedy skits, and the same reason Pee Wee Herman is one in a long line of C-list celebs to show up on the show: the McMahons haven't wanted to be in the wrestling business for ages.
Think about it: Vince buys WCW, snaps up their video library and their talent, and corners the market on wrestling the same year that the XFL launched. FINALLY, he thinks...finally he'll get out of wrestling after a lifetime of doing it and be respectable. Except that he can't. The XFL tanks. Turns out that all Vince McMahon is good at is monopolizing the big-event wrestling biz. He has no other talents. The WWE was victorious because of other people in the company, not because of Vince. If it were up to him, we would have all been fans of the Gobbeldy Gooker. And WCW's self-destruction made Vince think he was way smarter than he is.
So he's doing what any father stuck in a family business that he can't branch out of would do: prepare things as best he can so his children can take over.
Maybe in a few years, there will be another star on the level of Hogan or Austin. Probably won't have anything to do with the McMahons. In the meantime, he and Linda will retire, wealthy as all heck but without any intrinsic respest for how they've made their pile.

I didn't wonder why Big Show was on Raw. I just figured that they were going to have Show and The Miz heading up teams for a Smackdown VS Raw rematch at Survivor Series.

Hey, am I the only one to notice that Justin Gabriel and Heath Slater conducted a stomp fest on THD? I could have sworn that the continuously stomp on DH Smith at least 20 to 30 times before Slater gave Smith a punch.
Posted by: Andrew Stevens Shole | November 5, 2010 7:28 AM
Thank you...I was hoping that I wasn't the only one who saw that Truth might be turning heel. If you think about it, Truth costing Orton the championship makes sense in giving Cena and the WWE an out to give Cena his freedom from Nexus without making him turn heel...yet.
Posted by: Pete | November 5, 2010 2:39 PM
I thought Randy Orton should have used mind games on John Cena instead of a guilt trip. He could have pointed out that there were no way WWE would fire John Cena, and that Barrett's boasts are a bluff.
It would give enough reason for Cenation fans to believe there was a chance John Cena can do the right thing and stay employed, although I think WWE may be trying to sell Survivor Series on its "screwjob" legacy and entice the fans into buying the PPV to witness John Cena's heel turn.
Posted by: Mr. Sarcasm | November 5, 2010 4:21 PM
I think that the WWE is using Cena as a fool enough already all the WWE is doing is teaching kids is to be a bully like barrett nobody is going to stand in your way and if they do take the only thing that they love away from them and have them bend over and spead their cheeks
