TNA Turning Point results and comments
Here are the results from TNA’s Turning Point pay-per-view Sunday night and my thoughts on the booking:
TNA world champion Jeff Hardy defeated Matt Morgan: Morgan, a late Plan B for this match after Mr. Anderson was sidelined with a concussion, had virtually no momentum coming in and there was little chance of new champion Hardy not succeeding in his first title defense. At least Morgan was put over strong in defeat, and I think his time will come eventually. It took three Twist of Hates (the new name for Hardy’s finisher) to beat him. At one point, Morgan hit the Carbon Footprint and covered Hardy, but the referee stopped counting at two even though Hardy did not kick out. Not sure what that was all about, but it sounds like a screw-up.
Jeff Jarrett defeated Samoa Joe: With the help of a nightstick and outside interference from TNA security guys Gunnar and Murphy, Jarrett choked out Joe for the win. I know some in the Internet Wrestling Community are ticked off that Joe didn’t go over in this match, but I think Jarrett winning was pretty obvious, as TNA is clearly building to a Jarrett-Kurt Angle match. The only way I thought Joe would win was if Angle would have shown up and distracted Jarrett.
Abyss defeated “The Pope” D’Angelo Dinero in a lumberjack match: The lumberjacks were members of Pope’s “congregation,” which was an entourage that included his brother. Of course Pope’s people – including his own brother – turned on him and cost him the match. Vintage Russo.
TNA world tag team champions The Motor City Machine Guns defeated Team 3D: It’s no surprise that many are calling this the best match of the night by far. This was billed as Team 3D’s retirement match, and for those expecting Team 3D to either turn heel or turn on one another, it didn’t happen. The Guns won clean and the two teams hugged after the match. TNA did the right thing by giving the Guns – the top tag team in the business today – a victory over one of the most successful teams of all time. As far as where Team 3D goes from here, I still think that Brother Ray will turn on Brother Devon and they will have a singles program.
Fortune (A.J. Styles, Beer Money, Kazarian and Douglas Williams) defeated EV 2.0 (Raven, Rhino, Stevie Richards, Sabu and Brian Kendrick): The stipulation was that a member of EV 2.0 would be fired if the team lost, and Sabu ended up doing the job and losing his job. That wasn’t a shock, as it was reported last week that Sabu had been told by TNA officials that the company had no plans for him after this match. For those keeping score, the Immortal/Fortune factions went a combined 4-0 on this show, which makes sense from a booking standpoint. The heels have to maintain the upper hand for a while before the babyfaces make a comeback.
Rob Van Dam defeated Tommy Dreamer: RVD has lost a lot of steam as a top babyface. He’s gone from being TNA world champion to wrestling Dreamer in a match that no one cared about. Being portrayed as a paranoid guy who is easily manipulated by Eric Bischoff hasn’t done RVD any favors either. After the match, RVD and Dreamer buried the hatchet.
Mickie James and Tara wrestled to a double disqualification: This was more of a brawl than a wrestling match, and the non-finish keeps the feud going. Even though Madison Rayne is the Knockouts champion, it’s pretty clear that James and Tara are the stars of the division.
Robbie E. defeated TNA X Division champion Jay Lethal to win the title: The Shore gimmick has go-away heat, so of course the TNA creative team decided to ignore the fans’ vocal disdain for the act and the poor ratings for Shore segments and put the belt on Robbie E. I have this horrible feeling that this is leading to a mixed tag match pitting Robbie E. and Cookie against Lethal and Jwoww.

I actually think that TNA did a reasonably good job at turning Morgan and making him into a credible opponent for Hardy. TNA showed a better ability to book on the fly then they do when they've got time to prepare. Not really sure what that means....

This was a "pay per view". Which means some people were actually paying money to see this? Really?

I am a 25-year wrestling fan, and I am pretty disappointed with the two major companies right now!!! I am totally bored with the WWE roster, the anonymous GM, and the putting over of Nexus constantly!!
I turned to TNA about 3 months ago, and was thrilled with the names, the level of competition and the great matches that they were putting on live TV.
Now, since the introduction of the Immortals, I am extremely disappointed in TNA for taking the stupid way out of matches again.
I'm not pro babyface or pro heel, and I love the antichrist role for Jeff Hardy, but the rest of TNA is falling apart in my book.
I may even start tuning out of wrestling for the first time in almost 25 years!!

My son or I won't even watch TNA. There is no payoff for this total domination angle. Is Sting going to come save the day yet again at 55 years of age? It's so predictabley stupid. Their product sucks big time.

So when you say "vintage Russo," are you referring to the predictable swerve in the lumberjack match? Which by the way, begs the question of whether it can be called a swerve when everyone can predict it to their friend as they watch mid-yawn. At least when the same thing happened at WM, the Hart family bucked the trend and didn't actually turn on Bret.
I ask, because I think the definition of "Vintage Russo" has multiple meanings. Another one being when he takes a pretty decent roster that knows how to make money and finds a way to make them unwatchable.
I'd rather watch a documentary narrated by a heel Michael Cole than that mess of a PPV.
RESPONSE FROM KE: I was referring to predictable, non-sensical swerve.

I am 66yrs old and have been watching wrestling since I was a little girl with my grandfather. Never miss any matches. Now, since the inception of Nexus I have no desire to watch WWE. Who really cares who the "general manager"is? And as for TNA, I am getting really tired of the has been Bischoff and Hogan, who used to be my favorite. What happened to good old fashioned wrestling?

So you're telling me you've been watching wrestling since 1985-ish and its all been sunshine, rainbows and unicorns for you? Whatever, to each their own. ROH, Dragon Gate, Chikara...there's something for everyone in wrestling. I've been watching almost 20 years and there have been ups and downs, times when I watched every minute of televised and PPV wrestling, and times I floated away for periods of time. Hating on wrestling is almost half the fun of enjoying it, and the internet has accelerated this to a ridiculous degree. The product is not great now, but it's really not that terrible either. Remember, it could always be worse. The Gobbledy Gooker could re-hatch and form a tag team with The Shockmaster. I'll take Nexus over that anyday.

"For those keeping score, the Immortal/Fortune factions went a combined 4-0 on this show, which makes sense from a booking standpoint. The heels have to maintain the upper hand for a while before the babyfaces make a comeback."
The problem, Eck, is that "Vintage Russo" booking dictates that the faces never actually catch the heels.
The E may not be cutting edge right now, but at least they have balanced, smart booking most of the time. The E is winning with a less talented roster in terms of in-ring ability, but better writing, management, professionalism (read: quality control) and vision. Oh, and about a kajillion dollars.

"I have this horrible feeling that this is leading to a mixed tag match pitting Robbie E. and Cookie against Lethal and Jwoww."
~ And, I just throw up in my mouth a little bit.
Overall, Turning Point wasn't really a turning point and was exactly what everyone thought it'd be. Morgan had no shot, and while everyone knew the Immortalortune group would win all their matches, that doesn't mean I would have had not ONE ckear babyface winning against a clear heel. it is still depressing to see an older declining wrestler who shouldn't be at the forefront of the company beating one of the in-their-prime over-with-the-crowd guys (JJ over Joe). I get, but I don't have to like it.
MCMG and 3D was BY FAR the best match of the night...by miles and miles. Deserved and marquee win for the Guns and classy thing for 3D to do for them. Hopefully the EV2 v. Fortune feud is over because the old ECW guys are D-O-N-E and the guys in Fortune could be better utilized to help improve the overall quality of the rest of the card. AJ v. Morgan or RVD for the TV title perhaps? Beer Money back in the tag scene. Kaz and/or Doug Williams in X-Division scene. You want people to compare Fortune favorably to the Horsemen? GIVE THEM GOLD.
Finally, I give TNA some credit. They were forced into emergency booking this main event and turning Morgan, and they did a relatively decent job of it. I also think it helps build Hardy v. Anderson even more when he comes back, so props there. But as long as Russo is "bookerman" in TNA, you are going to get swerve after swerve (that ridiculous Pope v. Abyss match), heels running rampant and winning even though they maybe shouldn't (Jarrett and Robbie E) and no-finishes (Tara v. Mickie). That is the credo of Vince Russo-as-booker. It sucks, but it is what it is.

Paul Hayman said this Pay per view was disaster why waist your money on this garbage TNA needs new management .

I'm going to do previous poster Dan Holliwell one better: I've been watching pro wrestling for about 45 years and can truly say this is the first time I have absolutely NO interest in anything either of the major promotions are doing.
Even when I have gone away from following wrestling for extended periods, I would tune in from time to time just to see what was going on.
But now I do not record Raw or Smackdown. Stopped doing that about 6 months ago. And now that TNT is recycling the old takeover NWO angle, I have stopped recording Impact. When TNT starts showing wrestling matches again (big fan of the Motor City Machine Guns) and ditches all the backstage talk segments, then perhaps I will give it a chance. Perhaps.

It is pretty bad when a 66 year old grandma is bored with wrestling. Wants to bring back "old-fashioned" wrestling. She is tired of Hogan and Bischoff...funny. I mean she is almost the same age as Hogan. Really.

First of all, great review on the PPV. Really did'nt get a chance to watch it and got the meat of it right here.
To me it appears that both TNA and WWE think all the fans have short to long term memory loss. They keep recycling the same old storylines and the worse part of the whole deal is they do it the exact same way. Its almost like they really think we can not remember anything. I just really hope that one of these two companies steps up and does something that makes us all say "I never say that coming" Good luck with that!!!

Hey Kev, great blog man...keep up the good work...I try to read the Ring Post every chance i get....I want to say that wrestling has perhaps ran it course and it's time for the owners or promoters to realize this...it will never ever have that same excitement it had 5,10,15,or 20 years ago for numerous reasons....We all can agree that TNA has a mix of veterans and young workers that has proven that they can have quality or perhaps great matches with a building up of a storyline with its characters and a owner that can put someone in charge that can let go of WCW glory and sad days....
TNA isn't doing Robert Roode and AJ Styles, and the black guy that mimick Macho Man and Ric Flair....and a few other guys that are in a stable whose talent is being under utilized.....

Well, I haven't been the biggest fan of the Motor City Machine Guns throughout their run as a tag team. However, over the last 6 months or so, I have really started to like watching them. Their series with Beer Money was unbelievable. The match last month with Gen Me was a great spot fest. And last night, they made The Dudleys have a watchable match for me. Team 3D is way past their time for me, but their match last night was great. They must really think the Guns are great to put them over that way. Not sure they will actually retire, but either way, its great for the Guns.
Also, there was absolutely no reason at all for the Dreamer/RVD match. It was unbearable. Dreamer was blah at his best, and now that he's past his prime, he doesn't need to be in the ring. I mean Flair shouldn't be either, but at least he has some redeeming qualities still. At times Flair is still great in a promo and his match with Lethal was better than some things I see in WWE. Dreamer, though, couldn't wrestle with a 60 year flair while he was in his prime. TNA take him off TV.
Digging the Morgan push. Where does it go from here? Feud with Abyss? AJ Styles?
P.S. Kev, with all the talk of the Dudleys being the best ever, where would you put them in terms of Tag Team All Time Rankings? Who's the Best? What about the guns?

"Remember, it could always be worse. The Gobbledy Gooker could re-hatch and form a tag team with The Shockmaster."
With how they're using Chavo these days, it wouldn't take much to stick another Guerrero in the GG suit...

The Gobbledy Gooker could re-hatch and form a tag team with The Shockmaster. I'll take Nexus over that anyday.
If TNA reads Kev's blog, they will make the team of the Gobbledy Gooker and The Shockmaster will become Tag Team Champions.

I've been a TNA fan for a couple of years now but i've never been more disappointed than i was when i saw that Robbie E. had gone over Lethal.
Robbie E. seems to actually have some talent but his gimmick is incredibly bad and it does the X division no favours having a walking gimmick slide in and take the title within a matter of weeks.
TNA did however do a good job with Morgan, especially given how little time they had to work with.
Fingers crossed it's the start of a much deserved monster push.
I've never understood the fascination with Abyss and never will, nor will i ever understand why Joe is constantly used as an enhancement talent.
Not so long ago he was having match of the year contending headline matches with Kurt Angle.

I have to give it to TNA, they're finally giving the younger talent the pushes they deserve. I know people frown upon Hardy as champion, but he's finally getting the chance to carry a company after being a mid-carder for so long (I know he was a main eventer in his last 2 years in WWE, but he did play second-fiddle to guys like Edge, HHH, Orton, and Cena). The long-awaited end of EV2 is finally here, Jarrett/Joe/Angle storyline is ok because it's not taking too much time and it's sort of a mid-card feud, MCMG are riding the tag team division, the Robbie-Lethal feud is actually going somewhere (why can't anyone give this a chance? they've put on a few good matches and Lethal has looked good in both of them), and Pope is getting the push he never got in WWE. Also, how come no mention about Dreamer's injury? When I saw the match online today, it looked pretty gruesome, and I was shocked that he wrestled half of the match with his wrist like that.

Im 25 years old also and I dont think wrestling is as bad as most people think. Ive been rewatching old PPVs and as Jeremy W said things have been much worse.
Sure the Attitude Era may be over but how would you like to go back to the Lex Express era???

I have been watching wrestling for 20 plus years. I have seen things I thought were great. But I have seen alot that have been completely stupid. I hate things like "Montreal", "David Arquette", "Spirit Squad", "lost in cleveland", and most of all, a wrestling show with no wrestling. I do not like watching a two hour show without having your champion make a live appearance. And most of all, I am tired of hearing the words "taking the company over." It is an insult to the fans at home who like wrestling and are subjected to that. TNA was awesome when you never really talked about who was in charge and the matches were decent. Pretty much before Hogan, Flair, and Bischoff came. WWE needs to get rid of the computer GM.....like anyone cares about a GM. Get rid of the guest host thing, like we need to see Pee Wee Herman, Dr Ken, or Toby Keith. And most of all, do away with Robbie E, Gunnar and Murphy, and Kazmarian. Bring back suicide and Hernandez!

Not a bad ppv for not much promotion? I thought the Dreamer/RVD match was awesome.I guess the big question is who is going to challenge Immortal for control of TNA. Would of liked to have seen the immortal Hulk Hogan back on tv soon
Posted by: sean lang | November 9, 2010 5:38 PM
If the Gobbledy Gooker and the Shockmaster were a tagteam, WWE would break them up and make them fued within 2 weeks of them winning the championship. Then they would put the titles on Bastion Booger and Tugboat at which point they would turn on each other. Lather, Rinse, Repeat.
Posted by: mat | November 9, 2010 11:42 PM
you know, for a 66 year old grandman, she talks and writes awfully like an 16 year old with a computer...
Posted by: delliott | November 9, 2010 11:59 PM
They need to build up Joe again, especially after this loss. He needs a win at the next PPV.
Posted by: Jack Windham | November 11, 2010 4:41 PM
It's WCW stupidity all over again....remember they put an actor in to win the title? Now, they took a guy who was getting great believability in Lethal and turned him into a jobber. Everything was fine until they made this change with Hogan and Bischoff.
And yes, I blogged that this would happen. Bitchoff has to get the spotlight. He has to be on TV or so he thinks. I even predicted that one of the former WWE guys was going to turn heel. Did I get it right because I am a genius? Hell no. I got it right because I know how these guys think and write. They that do not learn from History are doomed to repeat it. TNA is now Doomed.
