WWE Raw: Putting down John Cena is elevating Wade Barrett
Not only is the story line of John Cena joining The Nexus a compelling one, but it also is making a star out of Wade Barrett. That was clearly evident watching Monday night’s Raw.
Barrett did an excellent job on the mic during his verbal exchanges with Cena, especially in the final segment. He came across very sure of himself and his taunting of Cena generated a lot of heat.
With his considerable speaking skills, impressive size and solid in-ring ability, Barrett is proving worthy of having a top spot.
Other thoughts on Monday’s show:
Barrett turning his back to Cena and daring him to do something made for a dramatic conclusion to the show. …
I liked the main event, which saw The Miz defeat Cena in a no-disqualification match to become the Raw team captain at the Bragging Rights pay-per-view on Oct. 24. Miz definitely looked like he belonged in a high-profile match with the company’s biggest star. The no-disqualification stipulation pretty much guaranteed that there would be outside interference, and it came in the form of Michael McGillicutty and Husky Harris, who attacked Cena and cost him the match. Barrett announced that McGillicutty and Harris will become official Nexus members if they defeat Cena and Randy Orton in a tag team match on next week’s show. Barrett told Cena to “do the right thing.” Throwing Orton into the mix adds another layer of intrigue to the story line. ...
I thought The Miz had already been named the Raw team captain before Monday’s show. At least that’s what The Big Show said on Smackdown this past Friday. If that was a slip-up on Big Show’s part, I’m surprised WWE didn’t edit it out. It did telegraph that Miz was going to beat Cena. ...
Just as I figured, CM Punk is the guy who was traded from Smackdown to Raw in exchange for Edge. Punk was put over strong, as he scored a convincing victory over Evan Bourne in a Team Raw qualifying match and then destroyed Bourne in a post-match attack. The injury angle was done because Bourne reportedly needs shoulder surgery and will be out for four months. Now that Punk is on Raw, perhaps we’ll get a Punk-Orton feud at some point. ...
Six of the seven members of Team Raw were decided in a series of qualifying matches. In addition to The Miz, the team consists of Punk, John Morrison, R-Truth, Sheamus and Santino Marella. Yes, Santino Marella is on the team by virtue of his win over Zack Ryder. Ryder really gets no respect. ...
It’s pretty silly for the announcers to be acting as if Cena getting a mixed reaction from the crowd is something that hasn’t been happening for years. Cena, in his promo at the beginning of the show, even acknowledged that fans have always either loved him or hated him. ...
It was a nice touch having Cena hesitate for several seconds before saving Barrett from an attack by The Miz and Alex Riley. ...
I was glad to see Daniel Bryan booked to be competitive against Sheamus after he was made to look weak on last week’s show when Sheamus beat him down. I’d like to have seen Bryan win but I knew that wasn’t happening. ...
Justin Gabriel got in a decent amount of offense before losing to Orton. Orton was fortunate that he wasn’t injured when he failed to move out of the way fast enough on Gabriel’s 450 Splash. Gabriel landed hard on Orton’s back. ...
Morrison’s win over Tyson Kidd was short but exciting. I’d be interested in seeing a longer match between them. It was announced that the match originally was supposed to have been a triple threat that included Kidd’s tag team partner, David Hart Smith. Smith no-showed, however, as his gradual heel turn continues. ...
The match between R-Truth and Ted DiBiase Jr. was decent. The look on Maryse’s face during R-Truth and Eve’s entrance was great (it was a combination of befuddlement and disgust). ...
The heat that Michael Cole got after receiving the first e-mail from the anonymous Raw general manager was almost at a Vickie Guerrero level. ...
During the Sheamus-Bryan match, Cole said that Team Raw lost at SummerSlam, and Jerry Lawler never corrected him. Team Raw beat The Nexus at SummerSlam. ...
When Michelle McCool and Layla were talking during a verbal exchange with Natalya, Lawler said, “Please get the hook.” My thoughts exactly.

very strong RAW. I hope this is the beginning of an overdue return from the wilderness for Punk. I read people writing from arena shows saying the Punk cut the best promo they'd ever heard in their life... The guy is a major, company-carrying talent. I hope that Mark Henry doesn't come back next week and start a Big-Show-like revenge program against him.
Really not thrilled about McGilliHusky being on my television. On the flip side, I'm more excited to find out what's going to happen to John Cena than I have been in years!
Will there be more Daniel Bryan/Sheamus matches? I'd be into that. I think a Punk/Bryan program wouldn't do either of them any favors at this point in their careers. I'd like to see someone challenging Bryan for the belt.
Anyone know what show Ezekial Jackson might be coming back to?

During the Sheamus- Bryan match, i think Cole said that Team Raw lost to team Smackdown last year at Bragging Rights, but i could be off.

I can't help it: I like Santino. I was actually glad to see him win a match. I don't know why they put in the trouble of getting him over by beating Umaga back in the day to becoming the near automatic jobber he is today. Shave that monobrow and give him a push like the Miz.

I dont like Cena being under Wade Berret coz Cena

Certain heel turns need to be gradual. For instance, when Batista first turned on HHH and Flair to become a wildly popular face.
The heel turn for Smith shouldn't be gradual. It should have just happened. That would have created more of a shock and buzz.

Did Orton botch that attempt? Sure seemed like it.
Barrett has clearly become a reason to watch RAW now. With him and Punk on the show, the RAW heels are out of this world.
Sorry, I know that is a corny expression, but it's late.

That was an excellent ep. of Raw. A couple of things:
* Why is everyone 'forgetting' that Goldust is Ted's brother?
* That new finisher by Morrison was awesome. I couldn't stop rewinding to watch it again.
* Punk looked awesome. Almost at Orton levels with the fact everyone was chanting for him, the heel.
RESPONSE FROM KE: Goldust is Cody's brother.

The last guy that botched a move on Orton was immediately "future endeavored" (see: ken anderson). I hope the same thing doesnt happen to gabriel who might have landed a wee bit too far on that 450.

We'r not happy over barret upon cena
Posted by: Sadam | October 13, 2010 8:07 AM
That finisher Morrison busted out on Kidd was absurd!
Posted by: JTK | October 13, 2010 8:23 AM
I'm not a big fan of John Cena, but I do like when he plays dejected Cena, as he did during his feud with Batista. He was excellent last night, as was Barrett. We're clearly building to another Cena/Barrett match, when even the most jaded of us will want to see the hero triumph. This is just A+ booking. The only real loser has been Randy Orton, who's been almost invisible since winning the title.

Great match between Sheamus and Daniel Bryan. I suspect this won't be the last time these two cross paths.
As annoying as LayCool was I must say that Natalya wasn't much better. She spoke as if she had just memorized her lines.
Cena and Barrett's exchange reminded a great deal of the exchanges between Shawn Michaels and JBL a couple of years back. I must say Barrett has an incredibly resonant voice. He is a young man with a much older man's voice.
I think it is pretty obvious that McGillicuddy & Husky Harris will join Nexus next week. Nexus is about strength in numbers and the deck has to be stacked against Cena.

When Punk was attacking Bourne, did he say "ECW"? I swear I heard someone shout that during the Anaconda Vice.
Also, are there plans to reveal who the GM is? Jericho and Edge almost revived an interest into who it might be, but with Edge on SD and Jericho gone, I doubt there will be any follow-up for a while.
And I agree, the 450 Splash looked messed up. Perhaps Orton was supposed to roll into the corner, or at least Gabriel thought he was?
Posted by: Derrick | October 13, 2010 11:37 AM
Barrett throwing in the "you can't see me" face wave was the icing on the cake. This guy has the potential to be a top star in the WWE.
Posted by: Ed Sreniawski | October 13, 2010 12:53 PM
We were at Key Arena for the show.
We've been to four or five live events along the West Coast over the past year and let me tell you, this crowd was HOT. They hated Barrett and Cole, and just loved Cena. If anything, they are now cheering him as the underdog.
Prior to Raw, there were two matches filmed for Superstars. Primo vs. Darren Young and Melina vs. Alica Fox.
After Raw ended, there was a triple threat match for Orton's belt. After Sheamus and Orton were in the ring, Cena's music came on, but Barrett ordered him to stay away (without Cena showing his face again) so he could be the third guy.
The match lasted about 6 minutes with Barrett spending most of the time outside the ring on the mat. Orton beat Sheamus and that was that.
All in all, the audience was the really alive for this show.

I hope Kevin Nash comes in and Barrett hires him as a bodyguard and then has Cena and Nash go at it. And then Nash pulls a muscle climbing into the ring for the match and yet still beats Cena clean after 30 seconds.

DO NOT QUIT JOHNCENA FROMDEWAYNE AND TONY
Posted by: DEWAYNESAUNDERS | October 13, 2010 2:10 PM
Wade Barrett is being elevated, but Cena is looking cowardly in doing so. Raw's rating was down again this week, so apparently this storyline isn't as compelling as the writers think.
I'll be honest, I didn't watch the program all the way through -- I kept flipping away, because it was so predictable and annoying in spots. Remember the days when women's wrestling was an "attraction" and not a regular staple? Yeah, I'm forgetting too.
The whole "anonymous GM" angle is another spot where I now find myself flipping channels. It went on too long, and now it's annoying and my interest in it is gone. I feel like they use it to try to make sense of stupid storylines.
Thank goodness for youtube and other video services where I can watch classic storylines and characters.

that botched 450 was all gabriels fault, he over jumped that by a mile. if u watch where the guy is normally positioned when he hits the move and then see where orton was when he got hit, theres about a 4-5 foot difference. wonder if he got chewed out backstage.
Posted by: nash | October 13, 2010 3:08 PM
It seems like this is all moot until HHH comes back.
That said, Punk in a title program with Orton, Cena or HHH would be amazing.
Mostly because of him, not them.
Although I think Orton would be the best pick because he is a better worker than the others.
I really like Husky Harris. Reminds me of the old school. I could see him with the U.S. title or tag belts.
Barrett is incredible on the mic.
Posted by: ANon | October 13, 2010 3:36 PM
Sorry...Wade Barrett was good on the mic ..but seriously who the h is he? not the obvious but this whole nexus movement just isn't cutting it for me..it sthe NWO in reverse.. abunch of no-bodies beating the top stars..it'd be one thing if these guys were massive ..but the same size guys beating experienced WWE wrestlers..it will always reek of the Spirit Squad...the WWE has way too many guys atmid level who could-should have been elevated -- also for starters John Morrisson needs a radical change...dye his hair blonde like every other superstar in wrestling ..let him work on some kicks...and for Pete's sakes bring in one of the most innovative and exciting wrestlers in Petey Williams - to wrestle the likes of these guys...if you are going to team Wade with anyone let it be with Regal ..would like to see a Regal/Barret vs Sheamus/Finley..match...as well
Posted by: Jam | October 13, 2010 3:55 PM
Yeah, the 450 near fiasco was definitely Gabriel's fault. It's not good for your future to mess up so badly on your key move and nearly injure the top guy in the company. But unlike Mr. Anderson, Gabriel seems like a great kid who won't make the same mistake twice - so I expect he'll have a long WWE career.
Barrett turning his back on Cena - beautiful. Barrett doing Cena's "You can't see me." - Priceless.

I went to the live WWE show in Anaheim, Calif. last Friday and CM Punk cut an amazing promo. Him walking around the ring, mugging the people in the crowd was epic. The dude is mad skilled and very talented.
Love Barrett, even more so after he "You Can't See Me"'d Cena. Amazing. Hope the WWE can keep momentum up.

Quick question, did John Morrison's finisher look eerily like the SOS? Or was that just me?
Posted by: Nick | October 13, 2010 5:53 PM
do we see it coming? it will happen.
barrett will eventually get the wwe title.
i wonder if when this happens WWE will do the ol faction that holds all the belts angle.
with harris/perfect getting the tag titles.
some other nexus member taking the US off bryan.
and maybe a nxt diva coming into the mix.
NEXUS running the wwe and actually stamping a memorable name for themselves.
then sure. inevidably disintergrating.
this would be boring for me. but i'm sure exciting for the millions of young wwe fans.
also. does darren young even have 1 fan? what is he on tv for?
Posted by: Mike L | October 13, 2010 6:32 PM
Daniel Bryan doesn’t deserve to have anything he is getting. I mean he was fired than brought back and anyone who can make a mach against Edge look bad doesn’t deserve to be on TV let alone have the United States title.
Posted by: Antony | October 13, 2010 6:36 PM
Joe, you couldnt form a single sentence that made sense. pathetic.
anyways. im loving the barrett-cena angle. i'd be disappointed if wwe didnt milk and develop this one to wrestlemania.
Posted by: Ajanta | October 13, 2010 7:46 PM
I may be in the minority but I think the Whole Nexus/Cena story sucks. Who are these guys? These fools were just rookies and now they miraculously became super powers in a matter of weeks. Hell even Cena and Triple H put in work as jobbers or mid carders before being main-eventers. WWE has gotten into the habit of fast-tracking guys (a ala Sheamus) and trying to ram them down our throats as stars. Well I'm not buying it. In the heyday of WWE and WCW half of Nexus would either be mid to lower card or frying fish. It makes no sense that Cena is forced by the GM to be in Nexus. The whole I will fire you if you don't stay is wack too. In the end I think this will end badly because fans aren't as stupid as the WWE thinks. They are speaking through the ratings. WWE needs to cut the BS and do something with the real talent they have been sitting on for years. Why is Morrison, MVP and Bryan being wasted while Fat boys like Husky Harris are given a free ride on the fast track? Someone has naked pics of Vince they don't want coming out during this election cycle. lol
The computer GM is entertaining somtimes but is getting old.
Posted by: CP | October 14, 2010 12:01 AM
@mike.yeah i agree daniel bryan dont deserve that us title,i think morrison or goldust does.i just dont like bryan he is to overated.
Posted by: Ben | October 14, 2010 12:28 AM
The Big Show didn't make a mistake. The Miz was already captain at the start of Raw. He said as much. Cena said so too - "the only thing I've got a problem with is the Miz being the captain; I mean that's about as ridiculous as Betty White doing a spread for playboy". Cena then challenged the Miz for the captaincy. The Raw GM turn that challenge into an official match.
Posted by: Anonymous | October 14, 2010 1:49 AM
I just wanted to correct myself i meant i agree with anthony.but to mike no i dont think darren young has even 1 fan but hell he sucks.

I become more and more impressed with Wade Barrett by the week. If there was any significant grooming done by the NXT pros, they sure had old Wade paired up with the right guy (Jericho). He's got this cocky, arrogant presence while sounding like one of the British Bowery Boys.
Here's a theory for how this Cena-Barrett feud can go. After ample humiliation from Wade towards all the Nexus guys, Cena becomes the new leader of Nexus and turns into an AJ Styles, "I am this Company" type of heel who'll get into a feud with the by-then-identified-to-be-Vince-himself GM.
Barrett would then be available to work with Jericho when he ultimately returns -- or else team with Regal in the hopes that Lord Steven/William will do for his in-ring work whatever it was that Jericho did for his character development and verbal skill.
Of course, I expect none of this to happen -- except maybe the Vince part.

I don't think the 450 was botched. Orton sold his shoulder being hurt right afterwards, so much so that the announcers bought it... and then lured Gabriel in for the RKO.
Either that's great improv or it was scripted that way. I go latter.
RESPONSE FROM KE: I think it was improvised. Those guys are taught to think on their feet because things happen.
Posted by: Mitch8415 | October 15, 2010 1:29 PM
antony and ben, learn how to spell before youo criticize ANYONE lol and to Kevin why was no one complaining when Alicia was dancing with DJ Gabriel? It seems anything eve does is soured upon or so (no to bash you)

Wade you have the worse fake accent i have ever heard it is an insult to the whole of Manchester mate.... you have to use your whole team 2 fight 1 person cause u know u could never win a fight if it was just you fighting...... Obviously intimidated by Randy and embarrasing CENA cause you know you will never be as good as there are... You could never REALLY beat anyone in a fight if you were fighting alone which is y u needed to recruit CENA to do something you will neva be able too and WIN!! sort ya life out man and ya accent U SUCK!!!!!!!!
Posted by: NO1 FAN OF CENA | October 18, 2010 10:25 PM
John Cena has always been a symbol of pride.in himself and for our troops which he seems to protray. WWE should be ashamed of themselves for this display. And YES I know it is supposed to be only for ratings and that eventfully it will change. But you are sending the wrong message to the kids who look up to Cena. And PLEASE get rid of that ridiculous computer , it has gotten very very old!!!

I love John Cena and hate to see under the authority of Nexus. They suck. Bring John Cena back to RAW and the superstars he is.
Posted by: karen | October 19, 2010 5:18 AM
I THINK WWE HAS LOST IT BY TRYING TO MAKE CENA LOOK BAD. I WANT CENA TO DECK BARRET SO BAD. BUT I ALSO DON'T WANT TO SEE CENA LEAVE. IF THIS IS NOT CORRECTED SOON AND CENA BACK TO HIS GREAT SELF THEN YOU HAVE LOST A VIEWER.
