WWE Raw: John Cena/Nexus story line takes an interesting turn

So now what is John Cena going to do?

He used semantics to outsmart Wade Barrett at the Bragging Rights pay-per-view on Sunday, but Barrett chose his words more carefully on Raw Monday when announcing the stipulations for his WWE title match against champion Randy Orton at the Survivor Series pay-per-view on Nov. 21.

Barrett named Cena the special referee for the match and said that if he wins the title, Cena will be free to leave The Nexus. However, if Barrett doesn’t win the title, Cena will be fired on the spot.

That presents quite the dilemma for our hero. For years we’ve seen Cena overcome seemingly insurmountable odds in the ring, but this time he isn’t facing a physical challenge, he’s facing a moral one. Will he compromise his principles to continue doing what he loves?

What makes the scenario even more compelling is the fact that Orton – Cena’s longtime enemy who has since become a fan favorite – is the guy Cena is going to have to screw over in order to win his freedom.

I’m really looking forward to seeing how this plays out.

Other thoughts on Monday’s show:

The main event between Cena and Orton – which was to determine whether Barrett or Orton got to name the referee for the WWE title match at Survivor Series – was entertaining, even if the finish was somewhat predictable (Barrett clotheslined Cena, which got Orton disqualified). Cena versus Orton certainly isn’t a fresh matchup, but it’s still a big deal when these two guys face each other, especially when you don’t have to pay $44.99 to see it. ...

One night after they stole the show at Bragging Rights, Daniel Bryan and Dolph Ziggler had another outstanding match together. I was surprised Ziggler didn’t win this one since Bryan went over on Sunday. The finish was interesting, as Vickie Guerrero placed Ziggler’s foot under the ropes while he was trapped in the LeBell Lock, but the referee didn’t see his foot there and Ziggler tapped out. Sometimes two wrongs do make a right. ...

CM Punk was quite entertaining doing commentary during the Bryan-Ziggler match. He was very complimentary of Bryan and stood and applauded after Bryan got the victory, so it looks like these two are headed for a program. That’s one I’m definitely looking forward to. ...

Punk had the line of the night. When talking about the people who trained Bryan, he said: “All Shawn Michaels did was take $3,000 from him. William Regal did the real work.” ...

The WWE tag team title reign of Cena and David Otunga didn’t last long, as they lost the belts to Heath Slater and Justin Gabriel. Barrett made the match (how he got the authority to do so was never explained) and then ordered Otunga to lie down in the ring and allow himself to be pinned. I hate when wrestling companies make a mockery of their titles like that, but it did make sense in the context of the story line. Barrett wanted to flaunt his power and send a message to Otunga, who has been defying him as of late. ...

Michael McGillicutty and Husky Harris are now official members of The Nexus, even though they lost to Cena and Orton last week in a match they needed to win to gain inclusion in the group. That seems like lazy writing to me. ...

Barrett and Otunga both did a nice job during their intense verbal exchange in the dressing room. ...

There was no explanation as to why The Nexus helped Kane beat The Undertaker at Bragging Rights, but apparently we are going to find out in the future. Otunga threatened to spill the beans during his confrontation with Barrett. ...

Eve Torres was decent on the mic during her verbal battle with The Miz and Alex Riley. Although with how good she looked in that dress, she had me before she ever said a word. I did think the segment went on a bit too long, however. ...

Riley’s booming voice reminds me somewhat of Mr. Anderson’s. ...

The Miz and R-Truth had a good match. Miz got the win but it was a very competitive match. ...

I’ll admit it: I popped for Santino Marella pinning Sheamus. Marella’s win was presented as a total fluke, but I’m still shocked that Triple H allowed Sheamus to lose to Marella before he came back to exact his revenge on the guy who put him on the shelf for months. Marella’s upset victory was really just a plot device to kick off a program between Sheamus and John Morrison, whose interference led to Marella’s victory. ...

Melina must really be in the doghouse. In the tag team match pitting Melina and Gail Kim against LayCool, Melina was pinned after one kick to the face by Michelle McCool. The match lasted about a minute, and Kim never even tagged in. ...

For some reason, guest star Toby Keith mostly kept his eyes closed while he was cutting a promo in the ring. The longer the country singer talked, the more my eyes started to close, as well. By the way, having Keith act as if he had no idea who Sheamus was doesn’t do Sheamus or WWE any favors. ...

It was announced that Pee Wee Herman will appear on next week’s show. In the immortal words of The Miz, “Really? Really?”

"It was announced that Pee Wee Herman will appear on next week’s show."

Just be thankful that he didn't guest-host during the Attitude Era. With Pee Wee's history, his segments would have had a Vince Russo "stroke" of genius.

I agree. There are so many ways this storyline can play out.

1. Barrett wins the WWE Championship, Cena's granted freedom from Nexus, and now faces a much bigger threat from Nexus than before he donned the trademark "N" armband.

2. Barrett wins the WWE Championship, Cena's granted freedom from Nexus, and leaves his former overlord broken and battered. Because of this, he would be easy pickings for Mr. Money in the Bank.

3. Barrett wins the WWE Championship, Cena thinks he's free from Nexus, Barrett utters two words that define Cena's fate: "I lied"; one way to advance the storyline if the bookers choose to do so.

A lot of people are hoping that Cena switches to the dark side and fully joins the Nexus, but I do not see it happening. First of all, why would the target of the attacks suddenly join up with those who have tormented him not only physically, but mentally? That would be like the Corporate Ministry storyline or the McMahon/Helmsley faction storylines in WWE. The only way I see a heel turn happening is if Barrett wins the WWE Championship, Cena's granted his freedom, and he can turn on his own since he has been a lone wolf for most of his career. He can claim that he was trying to do what he thought was right, but the fans would not allow it. To truly add fuel to the fire, he can explain that he has held his head high and tried to do the right thing for the past few years, but it got him nowhere. Thoughts on the matter?

I just don't get Cena's dilemma. I know HUSTLE LOYALTY RESPECT YOU CAN'T SEE ME and all that crap, but it's not like Cena and Orton are friends now just because Orton is a face. They've been feuding for the past seven hundred years.

I guess Cena's character would have to be more than one dimension to say something like, "Well, you DID almost kill my dad a few years ago," and then screw Orton over to get out of Nexus.

I think the stipulation against Cena in the next PPV allows for (your favourite guy, Kev) The Miz to cash in his Money In The Bank just after Cena helps Barrett win the title. This will give Miz the push he has been waiting for. Saying that, it's tough to see Orton losing the title so early in this reign... Just a thought.

Pee Wee Herman will actually get me to tune in. Where's Ernest "The Cat" Miller at?

Eck, they never actually said Harris and McGillicutty had to win to get into Nexus. All that was said is John Cena was to test them to see if they were good enough to join, they must have been impressive in defeat.

RESPONSE FROM KE: OK. I thought they said Harris and McGillicutty had to win, but I could be wrong.

"I hate when wrestling companies make a mockery of their titles like that, but it did make sense in the context of the story line. Barrett wanted to flaunt his power and send a message to Otunga, who has been defying him as of late...."

"TNA gave us a “match” between Knockouts champion Tara and Madison Rayne that was right out of 1999 WCW and brought back bad memories of the infamous Hogan-Kevin Nash “finger-poke of doom.” Whatever shred of credibility the Knockouts title had left disappeared during this fiasco. Rayne instructed Tara to “do the right thing,” which was to let Rayne pin her, and Tara did exactly that. If the competitors don’t care about the title, why should anyone else? Perhaps it will be revealed that Rayne is blackmailing Tara or something along those lines, but it’s still counterproductive to do these “BS” title changes...."

I thought the same thing as poster Kenny Graham. I, too, think Barrett wins the title at Survivor Series, and then before he can do any gloating, Cena comes in and clocks him with the belt and knocks him out. He then motions to the back for someone to come out, and out runs The Miz and Alex Riley. Miz cashes in and wins the title. I could then see the main event at the December PPV being a Fatal 4 Way with Miz, Barrett, Cena, and Orton.

Did we really need Toby Keith slurring over "Green Bay Wisconsin" 20 times?

Nice going, having your biggest comedy clown pin your biggest bad-a**. Real great idea.

I am officially confused when it comes to the Miz and Michael Cole. Is cole a heel announcer? He is as bad as when Paul Heyman was the color commentator during the Invasion era.

This episode had its ups and downs. The downs were Otunga lying down (I don't mind Slater and Gabriel winning the titles), Santino upsetting Sheamus (it kind of puts down Sheamus, but his biggest win since pinning Umaga), and the divas tag match. All I've been hearing is how Punk and Bryan would make a good feud, but any chance they could be a tag team? It seemed like they'd be going that way on the show.

I agree with Kenny, this could be the perfect opportunity for Miz to cash in his MITB title shot. I can see Barrett winning, Cena giving him the AA and leaving him laying, then Miz comes in and we close the show with a double title change.

The only way I see Cena being 'fired' is if he has a movie project coming down the line, and I don't think he does, right Eck?

I think my fsvorite line of the night is Punk saying he didn't know who Kaitlyn was. And when king said she was on NXT, he said "oh wow really!" that was hilarious to me.

I think the outcome is quite predictable at this point. Barret will win the title with Cena's help, once Cena is free he will dominate Barrett allowing The Miz to walking and win the title.

This creates for the WWE two new main eventers and allows The Miz to enter a program with Orton while Cena and Barret settle their differences at the Dec PPV. Ultimately I see someone like Triple H arriving on the scene again and winning the title for the Wrestlemania season.

Its too obvious whats gonna happen.Cena will screw Orton at S.S. when he had Wade beat,he'll count 1,2, and just before 3 he'll stop and reveal a Nexus shirt under his ref shirt(which is why he hasnt wore any Nexus gear yet)and probably AA Randy and count the pin for Wade and then reveal there(or the next night on Raw)that it was him that put Nexus up to beat up Taker and then at Mania we'll get the much rumored Cena v Taker match(if Taker is ok by then).

"There was no explanation as to why The Nexus helped Kane beat The Undertaker at Bragging Rights, but apparently we are going to find out in the future."--explanation? Vince Russo is BACK BABY!!

How did poorly behaved unproven rookie Barrett obtain the authority to fire money maker Cena from WWE again?

Sorry. The whole plot is not believable and does not make sense.

Of course I know storyline plots that actually make senseor are believable are not a requirement usually it seems in the imaginary world of sports entertainment.

But I thought I'd point it out nonetheless.

I said this before.
It's the return of the Midnight Rider. At the pay per view in Feruary He faces Barrett wins the Championship and unmasks himself to reveal he he was Dusty Rhodes all along.

Speaking of Peewee - just admiring Eve's athletic ability... to be able to dance to Truth's music with those things... must study how she does that - in slow motion.

I sort of agree with Nimesh S above. I think Barrett absolutely needs to come out of SS with the title. And I don't think they can turn Cena evil overnight. I don't think they've written it that way and I don't think he can pull it off. I think they have to go with the Sting circa '97 route. Have Cena help Barrett win and leave Nexus. Then have Orton and rest of WWE locker room/announcing question Cena (you should probably start this next week on Raw). That way the turn is a slow-burn, and he sort of remains a tweener for awhile (I can imagine the triple threat title match between the heel champ Barrett, face Orton and tweener Cena @ TLC in Dec. That would be fun.

I'm a fan of The Miz, but I don't think the time is right and I don't think he's gonna cash in anytime soon. He just hasn't been involved in the Cena-Orton-Nexus stuff, and I don't think world champions are in programs w/ R-Truth right before becoming champ. I would guess closer to or @ WrestleMania. What do u think Eck?

CM Punk definitely has a future in announcing after his wrestling career is done. I was disappointed that he didn't stick around for the rest of the show.

Or maybe that's just because I'm comparing him to LayCool and the Hart Dynasty.

Still, he did better than Jericho did when Jericho was announcing on NXT a few months back.

You should really look at the difference of your tone and perspective in how you write RAW reviews and Impact reviews. Even the titles. It's not even like you're objective and just point out the positive and negative of both shows. RAW reviews are always addressed in a positive light, with criticism for the few negative points you see. Impact reviews are addressed negatively from the title, with occasional positive statements. It's so obvious you are pro-WWE and anti-TNA. It's very unprofessional journalism, and disrespectful to the talent that busts their tails for TNA (regardless of what you think of Vince Russo's writing, IF he is the one that comes up with every "bad" idea that you feel the need to trash).

RESPONSE FROM KE: Have you ever considered the possibility that WWE shows in general are better than TNA shows -- in my OBJECTIVE opinion? Why would I have any reason to be anti-TNA? Some people that I consider friends work/have worked there, and I like Dixie Carter. But if it makes you feel better to believe that I have some agenda, then go right ahead.

Hey Kevin-once the election is finally over Tuesday do you think the WWE will stop airing the Stand Up for WWE clips-I understand why they are doing it but it seems like they are preaching to the choir and I have seen enough

Wow, when a babyface (R-Truth) comes out to challenge the loud-mouth heel (The Miz) and actually loses, it speaks volumes about where each man stands in the company.

Wade Barrett could've invoked a 'Freebird' rule (remember the Spirit Squad), but I'm glad he didn't. Although I did kinda feel like I was watching TNA's women's title debacle.

If you didn't know Barrett was going to attack Cena, you're a sad sad person

Barrett talking to Cena about his match with Orton against McGillicutty and Harris

I don't understand these people getting so upset over your reviews. Guess what? I prefer TNA to WWE but the way Kevin writes his reviews doesn't bother me? What is all this talk of "unprofessional journalism"? This is something he does on the side because he wants to do it!

You always do a good job Kevin and if someone can't handle you disagreeing with them on wrestling then they just need to get over it.

Based on the lead-up Santino over Sheamus was beyond predictable to me, but i still popped for it. :)

Eve's exchange w/ Miz was pretty awesome. but I'll never know how Eve managed to memorize all of those insults...

And its pretty remarkable to think that about 4 months ago Wade Barrett was a "rookie" on this brand new concept show called NXT and now he is the top heel on Raw. That's amazing!

At SS wade wins the title but Miz cashes it. Then, Cena starts to make the nexus story.

Was that line from Punk a shoot towards Michaels? I don't see any reason why McMahon would want to point that out.

I've missed bits of the Nexus/Cena storyline but has the issue of Cena not wearing the Nexus t-shirt ever been raised, Kev?

We all know why Cena is still wearing the fourteen pieces of merchan.....clothing he usually wears but i'm interested to know if it's been raised at all.

If they don't mention it it'd look ridiculous given the other demeaning orders Barrett has given Cena, but if they do mention it, there's no real way of justifying Cena still wearing his gear.

BTW Cena's about due another colour change, isn't he?

RESPONSE FROM KE: I've made the point several times about how silly bit looks that he only has to wear an armband rather than a t-shirt.

The thing with TNA is they say they want to blaze new trails and have the talent to do it but in reality their productions are still stuck in the 90s in most every way.

The thing with WWE is they have the money and talent to do whatever they want but they chose to mostly stick to old formula's as well plus it is more family friendly.

WWE is a publicly traded stock. Its value confirms that WWE has been mostly treading water for the last decade and even losing ground somewhat.

Not much new in wrestling anywhere really these days.

Maybe once Linda looses, WWE will be more motivated to break some new ground.

Meanwhile, TNA shows little indication that it is capable of doing so even when motivated.

I was captivated with this storyline until now...why does Barrett all of a sudden get the power to make matches where the tag champs lay down to give the title to other Nexus members he likes better? This thing better have one helluva payoff--wghenever that is.

. "but I'll never know how Eve managed to memorize all of those insults..."

well I guess being studious from her college days and always putting up quotes from past scholars and notable people throughout history on her twitter page might help, but would it go too long when in the past othr girls had many minutes of promo time though? Like the same compalin that divadirt had, but if it was nayone lese like Trish then no one would have any complains at all, (not dissing you though) and lol at ruzious

Hpw bout at some point orton gives cena an rko eliminating him from the equation and replaced by another ref.......

wwe now is getting out of hand, many people will stop watching it. The NEXUS do whatever they want, noone even react, this is so stupid.wwe is suck now.

i don't think cena's gonna screw orton up. cena and orton will make a plan secretely that will favour them both (which we will see during the match). but seriously how could rookies like nexus just come into a feild of pro wrestlers like cena and vince mcmahon (who is even the chairman of the board) and just take the lead? wwe really sucks lately.

i blame the general manager. he is a whimp. that why he spekes through the computer. and cena is not being treatied with the same respect the other nexus are being tereaten. otanga could say no to wades orders and the worst that could come is geting out of nexus not being fiered. so scrue the gm. he is a chicken if he wasn't he would have came out and face the consiques like a man.
