The Nexus makes their presence felt on WWE Smackdown’s debut on SyFy

An act from Raw made the biggest impression on the debut episode of Smackdown on SyFy Friday night.

The Nexus interrupted the opening match for the Intercontinental title between champion Dolph Ziggler and MVP and laid out both men. Nexus leader Wade Barrett then announced that he was close friends with the president of SyFy and thus was able to book a couple matches for the show – Nexus versus The Big Show in a five-on-one handicap match, and John Cena versus Kane with The Nexus as lumberjacks.

Barrett and company went on to score a quick victory over Big Show, and their interference in the main event between Cena and Kane led to the match ending in a no-contest.

With The Nexus’ existence on the line for the Barrett-Cena match at Sunday’s Hell in a Cell pay-per-view, it made sense to feature them prominently on the go-home show.

Other thoughts on Friday’s show:

Overall, I thought this episode was a bit of a mixed bag. Having the top stars from Raw on added to the excitement level, but there were no matches or angles that were particularly memorable. …
I was surprised that The Undertaker and Paul Bearer didn’t cut a promo explaining why they were back together and Bearer isn’t siding with his “son” Kane and where Bearer has been for the past six years after The Undertaker tried to bury him alive in cement. …

Cena versus Kane was an interesting match-up, as it pitted two WWE veterans who have rarely wrestled each other (at least from what I can recall). I’m surprised WWE didn’t promote this match ahead of time. …

Regarding The Undertaker’s win over CM Punk, which was pretty much a squash, I get it that WWE was trying to show how much stronger The Undertaker is now that he has been reunited with Bearer (and the magical urn) than he was the last time he faced Punk, but Punk still deserves better. I really hope he gets into a productive program with someone soon. …

The segment with Alberto Del Rio and the returning Rey Mysterio got a good reaction from the crowd. I’m looking forward to a series of matches between these two. …

Nobody likes Jack Swagger more than me, but the segment with him proclaiming to be the king of Oklahoma or something to that effect was just stupid. Then again, based on what Edge said when he interrupted Swagger, I guess that was the intention. Edge said that he was making it his mission to eliminate everything that’s stupid in WWE. Hornswoggle better watch his back. Anyway, Edge was acting like a total babyface. Does that mean he’s turning again? …

Speaking of Hornswoggle, I’m not the biggest Michelle McCool fan, but I marked out for her when she kicked the little guy in the face. …

The Divas match in which Kelly Kelly, Natalya and The Bella Twins defeated Lay-Cool, Alicia Fox and Maryse had a lot of energy, but it was kind of a cluster. …

I was disappointed that the Ziggler-MVP match only went about two minutes before The Nexus interfered. However, The Nexus’ attack on Ziggler and MVP, which led to Big Show and Cena making the save, did get the show off to a hot start. …

Did Matt Striker actually say that David Otunga was “something of a pop culture icon?” Let’s not get carried away. …

Green Day’s “Know Your Enemy” is an excellent choice for Smackdown’s new theme song.

Smackdown's new song and intro seems a bit off too me, kinda weird too. Looks like it was produced by a bunch of nerd to please some other nerd on the sci fi channel

Otunga pop culture icon remark refers to his relationship w/JHudson

RESPONSE FROM KE: Yeah, I know, but does that really make him a pop culture icon?

You could hear taker say something to Punk at the end of their "match" but I couldn't make it out but it didn't sound friendly.

I agree it seemed a very hit and miss show but still a good build up for the HIAC PPV.

I on the other hand liked the Womens match, mostly because Natalya looked strong, which I guess means she is losing at the PPV.

BTW did anyone catch one of the comment that all the Harts are Hall of famers... Owen for the HoF in 2011 if just to make a point to Martha maybe?

I was expecting Edge to interfere when Alberto was talking to the dog.

I really am getting tired of seeing Nexus. Are we really supposed to believe that one headliner (maybe) , three (at best) midcarders and one uncharismatic lump who can barely put two moves together are a serious threat to any one. At first when there were eight of them maybe. After losing Bryan and then Sheffield and also ditching Young they look decidedly lightweight. Will Cena lose to Barrett - surely not. If Cena wins who gets to stay in the big time?

What about the angle involving Randy Orton and Sheamus?

This is unrelated to Smackdown, but what are your thoughts on Mick Foley and his new book (which is about him leaving WWE and joining TNA) being prominently featured, with an interview, on WWE.com? Seems pretty surreal to me.

RESPONSE FROM KE: I'll have an interview posted with Foley soon about WWE promoting his book.

I like the idea of a Swagger v Punk feud. Both are to impressive superstars that seem to be in a bit of limbo at the moment. Perhaps the straight edge saviour versus the all american american would be a good way to keep interest in these two superstars.

Hey Kev, why do u dislike Ms. Taker so much she is the hottest diva wrestling wise while maryse is hottest in looks

Please bring back comment of the week

Teddy is trying to get Hornswoggle to talk. Maybe because he's the next RAW GM. That would be awful.

I thought the show was pretty good. I understood why RAW stars were on Smackdown, but the show didn't make us understand. In that sense the show seem disjointed with no point in some cases.

Because Wade Barrett is friends with the owner of SyFy he gets to make matches and usurp Teddy Long's authority? Okay....

I can't wait to hear Paul Bearer's voice again. That was always good for a laugh.

Does Undertaker have something against Punk? Seriously there has to be something going on that we don't know about.

I thought the show was ok but with I'm with everyone else the Nexus story line is getting old. Kane vs Cena was not bad Del Rio , Rey Mysterio segment was entertaining . In general the show i give C- .

I think that nexus are the best aspeshashey
wade.He is great.
I wod love to meat him he can make fun of anyone at a match.
But he John cena can give him good match
and edge.

LOL! how did i know that you'd mark out for little horny getting kicked in the face before even coming here?

I'm sure Paul Bearer will turn on the Undertaker.

It's just the way Paul Bearer was holding the urn behind Taker.

I'm sure WWE figures many fans barely remember Paul Bearer and the urn, so the need to explain for the last 6 years may not be considered important. Of course, that begs the question of why fans should care about Paul Bearer or the urn to begin with.

I just hope tonight's match is the end of the Kane-Undertaker program, though I'm not optimistic. Can I at least hope for a one-PPV break from it so that I don't have to sit thought it live when I attend Bragging Rights later this month? Otherwise, I guess that'll make a good time for an extended bathroom/concession stand break...

What if Paul Bearer turn out to be the Raw GM and then Taker finishes his career were it started not saying he is the GM just saying

For the 200th time in a row, Undertaker beats Punk. Seriously, someone, please make Undertaker go away.

I think that Green Day song is a terrible choice for Smackdown's opening titles. Raw has consistently opened with appropriately high-energy music, and Smackdown has consistently opened with something weak and lackluster and this is yet another example. For a theme song to a professional wrestling program, you need a brighter tempo and more volume.

I'm watching the replay tonight so avoiding looking at the results but I was thinking it would make sense for Darren Young to cost Cena the match - he is not a 'member of Nexus' but he still may be angry at Cena and works out it is better to be Nexus

Methinks Punk is gonna be moving to Raw very soon. Did anyone notice that he was not featured on the new opening for Smackdown? Not a single clip AT ALL.

Why no mention of the eagle mascot's complete no-sell of Edge's spear? No change of espression or even the slightest wince of pain!

Shouldn't a lumberjack match be referred to as a circled square?
