WWE Raw: Randy Orton gives Chris Jericho the boot

It appears that Chris Jericho has made his last appearance on Raw for a while. Now ain’t that a kick in the head?

In the main event of Monday night’s Raw, WWE champion Randy Orton defeated Jericho by disqualification (thanks to outside interference by Sheamus) and then proceeded to give him a stiff-looking punt to the head after the match. Jericho was taken from the ring on a stretcher.

Jericho and WWE reportedly could not come to terms on a new contract, so this was an angle to write him out of the show. It is widely believed that Jericho, who will embark on an overseas tour with his band Fozzy next month, will eventually be back in WWE, but how long he’ll be gone is unknown. My guess is that he’ll return before WrestleMania XXVII in April.

Jericho’s swan song on Raw (for now) was emblematic of his WWE career. He cut an entertaining promo, participated in a good match and, in the end, put someone over.

The man who says that he is the best in the world at what he does just might be. WWE is definitely not as fun when he’s not around, so hopefully Jericho will be back sooner rather than later to once again perform for all of us parasites and hypocrites.

Other thoughts on Monday’s show:

Having Orton make good on his threat to take out Jericho was an effective way to reinforce that Orton is not a typical babyface. Sheamus, who witnessed Orton kicking Jericho in the head from ringside, did a nice job of selling the realization that he could be Orton’s next victim when they meet in the Hell in a Cell match at the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view on Sunday. …

Jericho reciting the names of all the guys that he supposedly has beaten was funny. It started out with the usual names – Steve Austin, The Rock, Triple H, The Undertaker, etc. – and then WWE cut to a commercial. When the break was over, Jericho was still in the ring rattling off names, including a bunch of Japanese wrestlers, Villainos I, II, III and IV, and Kevin Nash, Diesel and Oz. …

The bit with Edge interviewing the anonymous Raw general manger (who was using a computer-generated voice) and later destroying the computer was pretty amusing. I couldn’t help but laugh when Edge grabbed the computer and the voice started calling for Michael Cole to step in and do something. …

It’s always good to see a match between longtime rivals John Cena and Edge, although it was too short to be anything special. It was obvious that the GM was going to re-start the match after Edge seemingly got the win by pinning Cena while Cena’s foot was under the bottom rope. …

Having Sheamus brutalize The Great Khali was a good way to get Sheamus over as a threat to Orton heading into their pay-per-view match. Khali isn’t exactly a top contender these days, but seeing someone beat up a guy his size is still an effective visual. …

Sheamus cut a promo about an old Irish tale and proclaimed himself “the fiery red hand of the WWE.” Well OK then, fella. …

In the most surreal moment of the night, Cole gave a shout-out to Mick Foley and plugged Foley’s new book, “Countdown to Lockdown,” which chronicles the build-up for Foley’s match against Sting at TNA’s Lockdown pay-per-view in 2009. Wow. …

Rather than booking another match between U.S. champion Daniel Bryan and The Miz at Hell in a Cell, WWE has added John Morrison to the mix and it will be a triple threat submission match with falls counting anywhere. Sounds good to me. I’m just glad that Morrison will be on the pay-per-view. …

Nexus got decent heat from the crowd for their beat-down of Evan Bourne after Heath Slater and Justin Gabriel defeated Bourne and Mark Henry. …

It’s looking like The Hart Dynasty is headed for a breakup, with David Hart Smith possibly turning heel. There was dissension between him and Tyson Kidd after they failed to regain the WWE tag team title from Drew McIntyre and Cody Rhodes. …

Lay-Cool’s commentary during the Divas No. 1 contender’s battle royal was absolutely unbearable. …

I was surprised to see Melina be the first one eliminated in the battle royal, and even more surprised (pleasantly so) that Natalya won it. So in notching that victory, Natalya earned the right to job to a member of Lay-Cool in an upcoming WWE Divas title match. …

It was announced that Johnny Knoxville will be the guest star on next week’s Raw. I’m not a “Jackass” fan at all, but I did think that Knoxville did a good job as The Rock’s sidekick in “Walking Tall.”

Every single teams that won the unified tag belts tends to breakup right after losing it. I mean from The Colons breakup to JeriShow to ShoMiz and now possibly The Hart Dynasty. Now that is one healthy tag team division WWE got.

I'm amazed that The Hart Foundation might be breaking up. It would be another sign that the Tag Team division is dying, and I don't think David HS or Tyson Kidd are going to do better than Shad and JTG (one is missing and the other is a jobber on Superstar). The Triple threat match being a submission count everywhere, we can already know Morrison is not going to win this one.

Jericho's promo was a throwback to his famous "Man of 1004 Holds" promo against Dean Malenko in WCW. I'm guessing that Jericho used the same trick last night as he did then: say something to get some cheap heat right before the break ends, then go back into the list. To the TV audience, Jericho has been listing the whole time and the crowd seems fed up and angry. There was lots of funny inside references for longtime Jericholics to pick up on. It might be a short break, but if Jericho's done, I think he did as good of a job as he could with his time tonight to make it a fitting send-off. Raw (and WWE in general) will not be as good without him.

I can't believe the Bruno dinner was cancelled. I was looking forward to taking my 8 year old son. With all of your friends in M.C.W. , how could we not sell 100 tickets ? Very sad, especially given all the old school wrestling fans in Baltimore !

RESPONSE FRIOM KE: I am as disappointed as you are.

Kev,

I missed the plug for Foley's book. How did he say it? Did he say the title?

RESPONSE FROM KE: Yes, he said the title.

Excellent, so now the only established tag team on the roster are splitting up. Ah well we can look forward to more makeshift random combinations like Evan Bourne and Mark Henry, Koslov and Marella and the soon to be superteam...Zach Ryder and Yoshi Tatsu!

Honestly, what is the point in even having tag titles? They have buried this division so badly it seems beyond repair.

We're lucky if most teams last a couple of months these days. And the longer running teams like Cryme Tyme and the Hart Dynasty break up solely because there is no one to fued with anyway. I'm really not a TNA fan but at least they give their tag division a fighting chance to get over.

It sounded exactly like Linda MC (Raw GM). BTW, how are things going with her political situation?

I couldn't help but laugh after one of the divas (I think it was Eve), had to basically push herself through the middle & bottom rope to get eliminated, because she didn't sell the dropkick properly...it was too obvious. She should've just gotten up and had Jillian(?) hit another move to eliminate her. It really looked bad...plus, we didn't get to watch her dance around this week... :(

Jericho's promo was fanastic! Reminded me of his old man of 1004 holds promo bad in the day. Hold 1 ARMBAR...

Plugging the book feeds my suspicion that WWE is "they". 10.10.10

Lets see, Edge beats up a computer, Daniel Bryan loses face status by attacking Jim....I mean John Morrison. And the main event was so predictable, an 8 year old could determine the outcome. Wait a second, they did. So in the past few months I feel like WWE stands for:
W- wrestlings
W- worst
E- Excrement

I dont know about you, but each time I see Natalya, all I see is her father stroking his beard.
I am probably the only wrestling fan in existance that wants to see John Cena join nexus. Just to get rid of the milk and cookies kind of babyface that he is.

It was priceless when Edge dropped an elbow on the laptop.

The segment with the computer talking was horrible!!!! Raw is getting cheesy. Plus I had to mute my TV when Laycool came on.

what is it with sports writers and puns?

Technically, Jericho won the match. Per the match stipulation, he could return and claim his #1 Contender Status at anytime, right?

I expect the return at WrestleMania!

RESPONSE FROM KE: Jericho lost by DQ.

Good Day All,
Kevin, thanks for the hard work & insight you put in.
I am sure tired of Nexxus coming out every week, distrupting matches and beating up on John Morrison or Even Bourne, without a single consequence. Bourne, I think, leads the league with 4 GLBD's "Gang Land Beat Downs (jobs)". Also, Barrett yammering about his blah/blah for John Cena this & that....he said they were going to change the WWE but the only change would be the channel.
Break 'em up or watch NWO/4 Horsemen classic on group wrestling on entertainment & continuity.
Take care,
Rey

Question - if the GM knew that Cena was Edge's opponent, then how did Cena know he was Edge's opponent?

Isn't it ironic that when Jericho returned to the WWE three years ago he was going to save the WWE from Randy Orton?

In the end, he couldn't save himself from Orton.

Do you think there is any chance Mick Foley will be the GM? I heard his contract in TNA expires soon and that would explain why they talked about his book.

Did you notice that Edge busted himself open with the laptop? I expected WWE to cut immediately to commercial while Edge was placed on a stretcher and rushed to the hospital.

I loved Jericho's promo. I don't know what surprised me more, hearing the names "Kevin Nash," "Sting," and "Ric Flair" on Raw, or hearing the name "American Starship Eagle" anywhere.

Hey Kev i think the Raw did good job in promoting HIAC theOrton boot was excellent it was funny seeing Edge giving a chair shot to a computer oh Kev didn't the voice sound like Joshua from the movie War Games. your thoughts!

"The man who says that he is the best in the world at what he does just might be. WWE is definitely not as fun when he’s not around, so hopefully Jericho will be back sooner rather than later to once again perform for all of us parasites and hypocrites."
Oh Eck... u forgot to add sycophants to his list of adjectives as well.

Jericho will be missed. Next to The Rock and Steve Austin he was one of the best on the mic and I also hope he's back sooner than later.

As for Lay-Cool, am I the only one who thinks it's time to split them up and have only one outright Women's Champion?

With David Hart Smith going heel, it looks like he's the one that's going to be receiving the push. That's generally how it goes.

Then again, there's Shad.

For anyone who gets it...sounds like T-Pain is the secret GM...

That Jericho promo where he named all the wrestlers he has beat reminded me of his "Man of 1004 Holds" back from WCW.

I also find it strange that he leaves WWE the night before his DVD is released.

I was really hoping that Jericho's uncut promo would be up on wwe.com, but it's not, at least not yet. I was annoyed at first when they cut away, but then I realized that they were referencing the Man of 1,004 holds, so I forgave them. Very cool. I'm dying to know if he included Chris Benoit. Probably not....

Jericho will be missed. Last time he left, I didn't watch Raw much at all in between his exit and return. At least I have my brand-new Chris Jericho DVD to keep me company.

I have to admit, of all the possible names i was thinking as GM, Michael Cole, HHH, i think i now have to put Mick Foley on the top of that list. Note Edge mentioned a list of legends, not Mick, also remember how it ended with Foley and Edge a few years back, and the GM is making Edges life miserable, it makes sense, for once

PLEASE..TNA .offer Chris Jericho WHATEVER he wants to sign.Money, creative control, his band perfoming every week, anything to get him there to make TNA a real solid alternative to WWpg

WWE needs to retire both tag team titles. What's the point?

The book plug was probably b/c Mick is going to have a movie out based on his life. No way Vince won't try to get him back before it comes out.

Why did Edge drop an elbow on the computer? It was probably the funniest thing that has happened on raw in a while.

Melina losing so early I think was a mistake on her part. She was supposed to remain on the apron but slipped. If you noticed, the ref took extra long to check on her.

It's interesting that they showed blood on Edge, considering this show was taped one week in advance. Also I guess it's okay to give yourself head shots with a laptop but not with a char.

Kevin earlier guessed that Abraham Washington is the anonymous GM, and, to me, that notion seems to get stronger every week.

Peter, an earlier poster in this thread, is not the only one who wants to see Cena in Nexxus as a change of pace. It seemed that he was booed pretty heavily when he bounced up (Hulked up???) out of nowhere to put the STF on Edge.

The only downside of a Nexxus win at HIAC is that Tarver (Is he hurt or is he working a Brute Bernard gimmick?), Otunga, and Slater's return to FCW for much needed training is delayed further.

If you only see her father when you look at Natalya, then you're definitely doing it wrong.

Just so you guys know, for the last two months they've been advertising a live taping of Raw for October 4 in my city. The entire time, they've been pushing the main event: a 15-man match consisting of Smackdown's top wrestlers, Raw's top wrestlers and the five member of The Nexus. I know they can change the card at any time, but it is the only match they're pushing. Those like me, who hate the concept of the Nexus storyline and want it to go away would seem to be out of luck.

I caught something during the Edge/GM interview that caught my attention and sort of made my stomach turn a little. The GM said something to the effect that he tried to work with Edge but that he wouldn't work with him and then said "yo." Recently, Zak Ryder has been trying to work with Edge and it would make sense that if Ryder was the GM, he'd be trying to interfere with Edge like has been happening.

Kev, did you catch that on RAW? Do you think Ryder could be the GM? Man, what a monumental let down that would be.

i've personally been enjoying raw lately. the nexus, orton, edge, jericho even cena have been entertaining to me. i dont care what anybody says but to me, wwe is better right now than what it has been for the past few years.

btw, to the people who say that raw is "getting" cheesy... you must be either a new fan or a stupid fan because the last 15 years ESPECIALLY in the smart fan appreciated attitude era wwe has done stuff that is a LOT more cheesy. if anything wwe has gotten less cheesy today than it was before.

also, i dont understand why people make such a fuss about pg. yea ok, we dont have that much blood anymore but who cares? this isnt some indy hardcore wrestling its wwe. its about more than just wrestlers bloodying each other.

and finally, im looking forward to seeing cena join nexus. i dont know, just the way this whole angles been playing out, i dont think its impossible for wwe to swerve us and have cena turn heel.

I hear a lot of people dropping Foley's name as a possible GM candidate, since Cole plugged his book. I personally think that would be a lot of fun, and his character does fit in with the storyline.
Kevin, do you have any idea when his contract is up with TNA? Is this even possible? Thanks

I loved the segment with Jericho and his list of victims. It will probably be the only time you will ever hear the names Stevie Ray, Scott Norton, and Buff Bagwell on WWE TV. Considering how he left, I'm suprised they let Jericho mention Juventud Guerrera on TV. I really got a kick out of his mentioning Nash, Diesel, Oz, Hall, and Razor Ramon in a row.

They showed Mick Foley's match with Triple H from back in '98 last night on NXT. I don't think he's coming back anytime soon. I read online that Vince is in a good mood regarding legends which is also why they had the Bret Hart Appreciation show at MSG the other night.

Johnny Knoxville as guest star next week? I can see a Great Khali beatdown for like the fifth time in the last 3 years. What are your thoughts about Pee Wee Herman guest starring on Raw in a few weeks?

@ Nathan: I was actually just coming here to post that. It makes a bit of sense, in that they've been having Edge insult Ryder the last few weeks, so it would explain why the GM is so anti-Edge, but... yeah, letdown probably. I think it would be better then Abraham Washington, though.

@Ken: I would agree with you. At least Ryder is still active enough for everyone to know who he is. Abraham Washington still has that "who's that?" reaction. I'm still holding out hope that WWE will not botch the GM angle and really give us a twist. So far, I'm losing hope they can do that...evidenced by how pitiful the Nexus angle is being handled.

After considering all the people the unknown GM clearly likes and doesn't like I believe I have figured out who it is: Triple H. He's coming back as the GM.

I see Jericho as someone, like the Rock, who probably is going to be taking on a large role in the entertainment business, outside wrestling. He's a tremendous talent.

It's too bad that he and the WWE apparently couldn't come to terms. This guy is the ultimate team player who will make anyone look good and sacrifice his own standing in the pecking order for the good of the show and the product.

He's been doing that for over a year now, without a lot of payoff other than camera time. When it wasn't clear whether that guest GM format would work, he was the guy who was most involved in putting over the guest GMs, often at his own expense.

He surely will be missed, maybe more than the company understands.

The Mick Foley speculation is fascinating. How many times can Foley burn the bridge between himself and the WWE and still find a way to come back? Of course Foley absolutely obliterated Bischoff in "Have a Nice Day," yet the two seem to be coexisting in TNA.
And while I'm on the subject, it's funny that Foley criticized Shane Douglas for his poor career choices in the same book, saying he "burnt down bridges he shouldn't have even bothered looking back at" and "has had more retirements then both Funk brothers put together." I guess Foley started taking career advice from "The Franchise" after all...

I'm often left wondering why no one ever takes a boot to Orton's head. I realize that it's a great tool for wwe to write out anyone who's injured or leaving for some reason but really, you'd think with all the people he's booted someone would get payback.

Hell, I'd expect a bunch of them to finally get tired of him, show up while he's cutting a promo, beat him down then take turns booting him in the head. That would be far better than his uncharismatic crap that he does.

Jericho did try to save us from him but failed sadly. One thing I would love to see is Jericho come back as a face champion and return to the time of Jericho the entertainer. He doesn't need the look, just the witty, intelligent and entertaining banter and promos as well as the wrestling skill. I honestly can't think of a time when Jericho was world champion and face.

Hell, he beat Austin and Rock in one night to unite the titles and the next day went from face to complete heel. He's entertaining as hell as a face, make him a face champion.

You might have missed that while he was mentioning Nash and Hall, he also mentioned the 1-2-3 Kidd, but not by that name. You might know him as Syxx, Six-Pac, or X-Pac.

How long until we hear a clever little pun from John Cena and how Shaemus got that fiery red hand? Did anybody notice how the PC baby face made a gay joke about Justin Gabriel a few weeks ago when he stated that Gabriel enjoys, "alternative culture, if you know what I mean.."?

I hope Cena loses as well. I would much rather listen to Wade Barrett's voice than listen to another cookie cutter promo from Cena. So tired of Cena. So tired. I almost died laughing when King was screaming like it was the best thing in the world when Cena actually pulled off a rather mediocre drop kick. What next? They'll scream when he finally learns how to do an armbar?

I read a long time ago that Vince McMahon was not a fan of the whole named tag team thing and that was when teams like the Killer Bees, Demolition, and the LOD left WWE. You saw the break up of the Dudley Boys, Edge and Christian (even though they weren't named), and I am sure there were many others.

I never understood why? Is it because that as a tag team; wrestlers would have more bargaining power in a contract? I mean, you can't have one without the other kind of thing?

It seems like now tag teams are only there to get one or both guys over. There is no really compelling team out there anymore. I mean Hart Foundation versus British Bulldogs was one of the best feuds going back in the day.

Whatever happened to the Cruiserweight belt? I would much prefer a chance for the smaller guys to get a chance to hold some gold (other than intercontinental and US) and not have to play second fiddle to the heavier guys going for the main title, or like having Rey Mysterio as the Heavyweight Champion. Really?

Or maybe since the Divas by themselves aren't really all that compelling by themselves in a match, there could be a Diva's tag team belt. That way you can showcase more Divas in the same amount of time and hopefully since there are 4 to carry the action it goes a little better.

I fell out laffin when the annonymous Gm asked Edge, (and I quote) " Why are you hating , Yo?"

no longer watch raw now that jericho is gone.he was the only decent thing there, this pg crap please, and now hardy left smackdown ., I have become a tna fan quick

The bit with Edge attacking the computer was one of the funniest things I've seen in WWE in awhile. I almost died when he did the chair shots and an elbow drop.

Funny how you have no problem with Orton not being the typical babyface and doing heel tactics like punting someone in the head and stretchering them out, yet when TNA has "tweeners" who aren't 100% babyfaces you get your underwear all in a bunch and complain about how wrestling is supposed to be simple and babyfaces are only supposed to act a certain way and heels another with no gray areas.

RESPONSE FROM KE: You have totally missed my point. I never said anyone should "act a certain way" and I have no problem at all with babyfaces who have heel traits such as Austin, Rock, Triple H and now Orton. No matter what they did, however, you knew they were babyfaces. In TNA, it's sometimes hard to tell who are the faces and who are the heels. That, to me, doesn't work.

I will no longer watch now that Jericho is gone. I will watch wherever he goes. I am a parasite.
