WWE NXT: And the winner is … Kaval
Kaval entered NXT Season 2 as the clear favorite, and any remaining doubt as to whether he would win it was erased during Tuesday night’s season finale when Alex Riley was the first of the final three competitors to be eliminated.
Riley, while not at Kaval’s level as an in-ring performer, was by far the most polished of all of this season’s rookies on the microphone and he has the size and look of a WWE star. His winning would not have been a total shock.
There was no way that Michael McGillicutty was going to beat Kaval, though, so the announcement of Kaval winning was a bit anti-climactic after Riley had been cut. Frankly, I’m amazed that McGillicutty outlasted Riley.
The big news was what happened after Kaval was crowned. The seven other rookies all attacked him and delivered a severe beat-down.
It will be interesting to see where this is headed, but if all eight guys end up on the main roster just as the Season 1 guys have, it really makes the whole NXT concept a joke and being named the winner rather insignificant.
Other thoughts on Tuesday’s show:
Percy Watson seemed to be confused as to who he was supposed to be fighting in the show-closing brawl. When the pros came out to try to make the save for Kaval, Watson began punching MVP, who was Watson’s pro and – seemingly – his friend. Then Watson and Riley started fighting with each other, but at the end, Watson was standing alongside Riley and the other rookies. Perhaps Watson really needs to put some lenses in those glasses. …
The attack on Kaval at the end of the show was foreshadowed when all five of the previously eliminated rookies were asked who they thought should win out of the final three and none of them said Kaval. …
The triple threat match between the final three rookies wasn’t bad. In retrospect, I’m guessing WWE booked Riley to win the match since he was going to be the first one eliminated. …
Not only is Kaval a better worker than McGillicutty, but he cut a better promo on this show as well. McGillicutty again was trying too hard to cut a “wrestling promo” and it came off forced. I actually laughed out loud during McGillicutty’s speech after he had been eliminated when he got a stern look on his face and talked about “the genesis of McGillicutty” in an ultra-serious tone. Michael Cole said: “Great, now can we hear from the winner please.” …
Lucky Cannon tried to display a little attitude when he got a chance to speak, but Cole wasn’t having it. As soon as Cannon started talking, Cole said over him, “Not this guy again.” Then after Cannon finished up his attempt at a heel promo, Cole said, “Oh, all of a sudden he’s a bad guy.” …
It was announced that Season 3 – which begins next week – will feature all divas. There had been speculation that the cast would consist of four men and four women. Here are the rookies and their pros: Naomi and Kelly Kelly; Maxine and Alicia Fox; Aksana and Goldust; Jamie and the Bellas; A.J. and Primo; and Aloisia and Vickie Guerrero. …
One of the women has already made a huge impression – the 6-foot-9 Aloisia, who clearly has a couple of things going for her. That top she was almost wearing was definitely not PG.

Comments
Soon as McGillicuty got the mic the second time I knew what was about to happen.
If this "Genesis" is going to continue, however I think McGillicuty, who appears to be the leader figure, should let Riley do that talking.

I was beginning to think that I was the only one who noticed the Percy Watson-Alex Riley ridiculousness at the end of the show, as no other reviews that I've read have made mention of it.
Nice pick-up, Kevin.

I thought that Riley screwed up and attacked Watson.

The one thing NXT has done a good job of is blur the lines between reality and the script. Maybe because these guys are real rookies and want to make their own impact, and are willing to step on anyone they have to to get there.
Same with the pros who themselves are stuck in the midcard (except for the Miz). They each want to upstage each other. All of them even seem to have a real disdain for Matt Striker.
Bravo NXT. Bravo.

Did anyone else think Kaval was disrespected by not being able to address the crowd at the end of the show? Or suspect that Vince is trying to show that anyone who built their rep anywhere but WWE is somehow second rate??

The all-diva NXT is going to be the lowest rated wrestling show ever.

dammit, I was looking forward to this (especially after the terrible Raw the night before)but the cable was out all of yesterday. Stupid hurricane!

The way I saw it Riley screwed it up...Watson came in and attacked Kaval as planned and the pros got involved and the rookies fought them off. And Riley starts attacking Watson for pretty much no reason. So all Watson can do is get back in the ring and continue as planned which was the Kaval beatdown.

I'm actually kinda looking forward to season three. It will be nice to see them spotlight the women. But.. the Bellas as pros? I don't know about that one lol.
Ay Kev any idea how long season 3 is going to last?
RESPONSE FROM KE: I believe Season 3 will be a short one, ending Oct. 1.

Did anyone catch the complete no-sell by Titus O'Neil when MVP ran all the way across the ring and delivered the drive by kick and Titus just looked at him...no wonder he was the first one gone.
Posted by: Andre the Midget | September 2, 2010 3:27 AM
yea, that was clearly Riley's screw up

Kevin, you need to see the video of the brawl again. Alex Riley is the one who got it all wrong and not Percy Watson. Watson was just attacking Kaval and he didn't attack MVP until he saw him attacking Riley. Then as a reward Riley attacked Watson. I think Riley got it all confused. Lots of botches at the ending, maybe the worst brawl in pro wrestling history. LOL!

I have to agree with the earlier post. I though RILEY screwed up. I thought it made all that rambling by Michael Cole and others about how he's ready for the big time seem silly. Because it looked like he totally blew it.
RESPONSE FROM KE: OK, I went back and watched the video. On second look, I agree with all of you who said that it was Riley's mistake, not Watson's.

I don't think it was Percy who messed up the ending with Riley. I've watched it a couple of times now, and after attacking MVP, Riley just begins trying to hit moves on Percy. Percy backs into the turnbuckle to try to get him to stop, but Riley just continues. Seems to be Riley's fault, not Percy's.

Hey Kev, you might be able to clarify this for me. I was very confused with the ending. First, the pro's save Kaval, then all happen to hop out of the ring, but while the rookies beat down Kaval, you could see them all standing on the outside just watching the attack with like 2 referees between them and the ring. Very confusing situation.

The "Genesis of McGillicutty" has to be him changing from that absurd name to his real name.

I am head over heels in love with Aloisa. I'm not even that short a guy (about 6'1) but that woman was amazing. I had no idea why I would want to watch an all diva NXT until I saw her. The group shot of nxt season 3 rookies with her towering over everyone was absolutely fantastic.

Another fun aspect of the end-of-show brawl: Titus O'Neill totally no-selling MVP's yakuza kick.
Posted by: keystonejack | September 2, 2010 1:56 PM
Did anyone else notice how Titus O'Neill completely no sold MVP's big boot in the corner?? (5:15 of this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyjUi5mQgUU).
It felt to me that the ending was just a complete cluster and nobody had any clue about what they were supposed to do. I almost feel like the pros were supposed to go into the ring since they were removed by the refs who just let the other rookies stay and beat down Kaval.
Posted by: Justin | September 2, 2010 2:48 PM
Well, I think there can only be one winner from season 3. That Aloisa is gonna be virtually unbeatable. And with Vicki Guerrero as her pro, well, it could be very entertaining!
And wow, that top she wore was barely there!!!

While I wasn't an ardent watcher like I am of RAW, during Season 2 I thought Kaval made big jumps in charisma. While I don't how much coaching the pros really do, I think LayCool deserve credit, maybe Kaval fits their gimmick. As for the brawl, it was such a cluster you know what, Vince Russo probably shook his head in disgust. Why do they do need to involve Titus, Cottonwood, and Lucky Cannon? They all flat out suck. Riley is a Miz clone, and Henning makes Lance Storm seem like The Rock. Percy Watson and Husky Harris do have potential though.

It wasn't just the genesis of Michael McGillicutty, it was "the beginning of the genesis of Mc Gillicutty." I think that he might of said something else stupid and redundant as well, but I can't remember exactly what it was. I felt like his promo sounded okay unless you actually listened to what he was saying, which made it clear that he was just stalling for time and spewing random BS while he thought of something cool to say which never came.

Hey Kev, I was just wondering what your source was for your belief that season 3 is only going to last until Oct 1? Random question I know, but I'm just curious how you came up with that. Personally, I think it makes perfect sense to keep this season as short as possible, because we all know that the ratings will most likely bomb, especially as most of us can't stand a diva's match that lasts longer than 5 minutes, a whole hour of diva's "action" just doesn't appeal.
Also, Aloisha or whatever her name is, she looks like something I once made during a summer vacation on Smackdown vs Raw when I was really bored and had completed the game several times. A 6ft 9" diva, that's just insane, unless she has the in ring ability of the Great Khali how are we ever supposed to believe that any other diva can defeat her?
RESPONSE FROM KE: The word is that the final show on SyFy will be on Oct. 1 as a lead-in for the debut of Smackdown.
Posted by: Nick Jolley | September 2, 2010 8:12 PM
Wait til you see Aloisia wrestle! She makes The Great Khali look like Kurt Angle!
Posted by: Adam | September 2, 2010 8:13 PM
Not really planning on watching the next series of NXT but Aloisa seems interesting. Lets face it, at 6'9" she doesn't need to be able to wrestle. With a a look like that as long as she's co-ordinated enough to not injure her opponents WWE will give her a push.
Posted by: P.rat | September 2, 2010 9:03 PM
Hey, whatever happened to quick hits on wwe superstars?
RESPONSE FROM KE: Something had to give.
Posted by: henry | September 2, 2010 10:54 PM
aloisa was fired from NXT!
Posted by: ANGELA | September 3, 2010 7:54 PM
Wow what a cluster at the end. What was that? I don't know how many actually knew what they were doing but it wasn't many. Titus no selling, Cottonwood disappeared, not all the pros came down and the ones that did got removed by refs, Riley attacking Watson. What was that? They make the season one guys look like 10 year vets.
