TNA No Surrender results and comments
Here are the results from TNA’s No Surrender pay-per-view Sunday night and my thoughts on some of the booking:
• Kurt Angle and Jeff Hardy wrestled to a no-contest in a TNA world title tournament semifinal
• Mr. Anderson defeated “The Pope” D’Angelo Dinero in a TNA world title tournament semifinal
• A.J. Styles defeated Tommy Dreamer in an I Quit Match
• Jeff Jarrett and Samoa Joe defeated Sting and Kevin Nash
• Abyss defeated Rhino in a Falls Count Anywhere Match
• TNA world tag team champions The Motor City Machine Guns defeated Generation Me
• TNA X Division champion Douglas Williams defeated Sabu
• Velvet Sky defeated Madison Rayne
Thoughts:
People are calling the Angle-Hardy contest a Match of the Year candidate, but the bout was absurdly overbooked. It ended initially when the 20-minute time limit expired while Angle had Hardy trapped in the ankle lock. Of course, the time limit wasn’t announced before the match, and who ever heard of a 20-minute time limit on a pay-per-view main event anyway? Eric Bischoff ruled that there had to be a winner, so a five-minute sudden-death overtime took place. Again the time limit expired without a winner, so there was yet another five-minute overtime period, which also ended without a fall. Angle had been busted open during the second OT, and Bischoff directed the medics to look at the cut. It was determined that Angle’s cut was too severe for him to continue, so therefore the match was ruled no contest. Huh? Shouldn’t Hardy have been awarded the match in that scenario? What made it even more ridiculous was that Angle’s cut apparently wasn’t bad at all, and in TNA we’ve seen one bloodfest after another with no stoppages. It’s unclear who Anderson will face in the finals to crown a new champion at Bound for Glory next month, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we get an Angle-Hardy rematch on TNA Impact, which would really be a slap in the face to the people who bought the pay-per-view. …
EV 2.0 going 0-for-3 is an interesting development, but I agree with the results of all three matches. The finish to the Styles-Dreamer match was reminiscent of the classic Magnum T.A.-Tully Blanchard I Quit Match at Starrcade ’85. Styles pressed a fork against Dreamer’s eyelid and Dreamer quit. …
London Brawling (Desmond Wolfe and Magnus) were replaced by Generation Me in the tag team title match against the Machine Guns due to “a personal issue.” Not sure what that’s about but wrestlingobserver.com reported that it was a disciplinary action. Generation Me turned heel and attacked Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin after the match, so it looks as if Wolfe and Magnus may be out of the title picture for the time being. ...
Jarrett and Joe got the win over Sting and Nash after Jarrett used the bat on Sting. It’s looking more and more as if Jarrett, Bischoff and Hulk Hogan are going heel at Bound for Glory.

Comments
Kev,
My guess would be a three-way for the title. Makes more sense than a rematch with the absurd booking.
I also agree with your thoughts about Hogan and co. going heel. I'll assume Sting/Nash will join "they". Joe will feud with Jarrett after the "truth" comes out.
Finally, Dixie will cut many promos about how TNA is for the fans and bore me to tears.

Hey, don't want to be picky but they put Anderson - Pope on as the main event which I thought was a great way of elevating both guys, picking them over probably the two most established main eventers in the company. Big boost for Mr Anderson especially with the win.
I doubt this is why the match was stopped but pwinsider.com reported that Angle had dislocated a rib. Would be interesting to know if that played any part in stopping the match. Doubtful to be honest.
RESPONSE FROM KE: The Pope-Anderson match went on last but both matches were promoted as co-main events. Hardy-Angle obviously was the real main event regardless of when it went on in the show.

Generation Me need a serious image overhaul if we're supposed to buy them as legitimate heels.
Posted by: Jeff | September 6, 2010 11:31 PM
I was almost gonna buy this ppv but I wasn't able to. Sounds like it was a decent show, and I guess it's better that I didn't because I'm getting Bound for Glory next month.
Madison Rayne vs Velvet Sky was disappointing, after her title push Madison suddenly can't beat anyone. I was rooting for her.
The big disappointment, and predictable was Mr Anderson over The Pope, WHAT A JOKE! Was hopping TNA ould treat us to a nice surprise. It was too much to ask
TNA is too predictable right now, I haven't had any interest in the Championship since Kurt Angle announced is journey to the top BS. The best thing TNA could do is surprise everyone and have Angle stopped cold and make him eat his words. Kurt Angle has been p***ing me off with his "I retire if I loose" gimmick, you can't get more full of yourself than that.

Not that its stopped Russo before or anything, but what at all would make any sense story wise for Hogan, Jarrett and Bischoff to go heel while having it relate to what is going on? They came to TNA, brought in RVD, Hardy, etc to screw them over? So was Nash being a good guy when he was conning Hall & Waltman into jobs? Sting grabbed Dixie Carter by the throat and assaulted RVD for what reason related to protecting the company?
I have no doubt this is going to end stupidly with "they" but I'd guess at best Bischoff is behind it and maybe Jarrett. I don't see much point behind Hogan organizing a team to fight Flair, having Abyss turn on him and having him maul RVD and then amazingly being aligned with him all along, it would certainly be a "swerve" but completely lacking any logic.
Posted by: mechanical bull | September 7, 2010 2:06 AM
This is hardly the biggest logic fail in TNA history but it is ridiculous that Bischoff kept adding an extra five minutes once the (unannounced) limit had expired. If the match having a 'proper' finish was his ultimate goal then surely removing the time limit altogether makes sense, adding an extra 5 minutes is just setting yourself up to be in the same situation again in five minutes time. TNAwful.

I thought the Angle Hardy match was really good - near classic but not quite. I do think the booking to some extent let it down, but maybe it was needed due to Hardy's shortcomings in the ring, especially when compared to Angle. Though I thought they were both booked perfectly for the match: I wasn't sure about two of the biggest faces going against each other, but Hardy playing the face who won't give up and Angle the aggressor driven to win was perfect booking. But the match stopping due to blood…is TNA turning PG? Great match though.
Madison Rayne should've won...not only is she a more compelling character than Velvet (not that Velvet's completely useless, she's great for Love's partner and plays her part really well) but Rayne needed to win so this feud could continue...
Apart from that I thought this was a good PPV. Seen better, but this beats most of what WWE has done recently. The only thing which let this PPV down was the booking, but apart from that the matches were great - standard TNA - good matches with bad booking.
One thing though, after the "time limit" first ran out for Angle and Hardy, Dixie carter looked really shocked, confused and worried...then Eric Bischoff came out and talked to her, and they then added the extra 5 minutes. Is Dixie Carter really meant to be so idiotic that when a time limit runs out she doesn't know that more time needs to be added?? Well, if that's the case I'm sure glad Eric Bischoff is there to look over things...ridicolous!

"I doubt this is why the match was stopped but pwinsider.com reported that Angle had dislocated a rib. Would be interesting to know if that played any part in stopping the match. Doubtful to be honest."
-I think it could have been too, but Angle wrestled the whole match with that dislocated rib. It happened when Hardy hit the swanton on him out on the floor. I have to give it to Angle, he can wrestle through the pain. I have to give it to TNA, not one older star won against a younger star (except maybe Anderson but they're both pretty young and they both came from WWE). One thing about EV2 is that they're putting over TNA guys, with a few exceptions. I'm glad Kendrick is in the group, cause he's one of the few guys in it that should be winning on a regular basis.
Posted by: paul | September 7, 2010 8:29 AM
I think it will probably be a 3-way for the title at the next PPV. Angle can probably walk out without the title and not have to retire as long as he doesn't get pinned. Of course "they" could cost him the match, setting up a feud.
We can only hope they is Heyman. What would be even funnier, with more shock value, is if "they" is Awesome Kong, ODB, Flash, Roxxi, Brooks, etc. They are coming back to right their wrongs and take back the Knockout Divison.

I ordered this PPV and I actually really liked it.
The Angle/Hardy match was awsome, it really was a great match but with having no winner I cant call it a match of the year. One cool thing was Hardy put Angle in a lion tamer and Angles face was in a pool of his own blood lol. Also I said to my Bro during the match that if Angle had to stop due to blood then TNA prob shouldnt let Ric Flair fight again.
Also the whole Fork on the eyelid submit sounds stupid and even when Taz was saying "THE FORK IS IN HIS EYE" I was like this is lame. However when they showed it up close it was actually pretty awsome and I even sounded like Don West yelling "OH MY GOD ITS IN HIS EyE! MAKE THIS STOP" lol
Btw Kev, what is your current match of the year? Right now Im going with the Angle/Anderson cage match where angle did the moonsault off the cage. Guns/Beer Money is up there to.

Didn't see the ppv. Just couldn't bring myself to purchase it. I know Hardy and Angle sounded like a great (yet strange) match but it's just not enough to get me to shell out the cash. I realize Mr.Anderson and Pope deserve the pushes they are getting but I don't think either wrestler should be closing ppv's at this point.
As for Angle. It;s just... can he please go back to WWE. Plenty of potential classic match-up's over there. Bryan "Daniel Bryan" Danielson vs. Kurt would be a tremendous match. Talk about great in-ring psychology.
Anyway don't think I'll be getting the "10-10-10" ppv. Starting to think I'm losing my faith in TNA. At one time I wouldn't miss one. But seriously seeing Jarrett and Nash mope around the ring is just so tiresome.

Generation ME as a heel. Funny. They should show them skipping in the middle school lunch line or maybe when stole another kids' lunchbunch. I am so scared.
Posted by: shawnm | September 7, 2010 1:42 PM
I just have this hunch that Hogan's ego isn't going to allow him to make a heel turn again. But this is TNA, home of the nonsensical turn, so obviously anything is possible. I'm kinda hoping that "they" turns out to be TNA's new line of action figures, which Abyss believes is talking to him. Now that would be a swerve!
The booking for the co-main events is just mind-boggling. It would have made some sense to have the LAST MATCH OF THE NIGHT be the one that runs out of time, because the PPV is ending, but not the one before. Anderson/Pope now looks like the "B" match, and the storyline from here on out will be Angle and Hardy, with Anderson a side note. They should have either just booked them in a three way to begin with, or set things up for Angle and Hardy to meet in the final, if they didn't want either guy to go over.
By the way, if Fortune is supposed to be a big deal, shouldn't they have someone in the World Title picture? I think a Mr. Potato Head could book a better wrestling show then Vince Russo.
Posted by: Ken Raining | September 7, 2010 3:38 PM
wouldn't be surprised to see triple threat match with Angle/Hardy/Anderson. that could be interesting. we already had a bunch of matches between Angle and Anderson. now Anderson supposed face along with Hardy. maybe this could also be another heel turn from Anderson turning on Hardy? TNA needs more heels. whatever happens there I guess Angle will win the title. if he loses he quits? TNA needs Angle too much for him to not be there anymore.
from what I've seen from other people say, the Hogan/Bischoff/Jarrett heel turn is going to be on Dixie to take over the company away from Dixie. Jarrett is/was the owner of TNA before Dixie came in. this is what Sting was going on with his deception. Nash has joined with Sting. Abyss heel turn against Hogan was set up by Hogan/Biscoff.
this all seems too similar to what Hogan/Bischoff did with nWo heel turn. that worked great back then, but this I'm not sure. how involved can Hogan/Biscoff really get? Abyss is a nice heel, but I don't buy him as a big heel that could/would be champion.
what TNA needs is a big time heel. someone who is really hated and can challenge for the world title.
some have said "they" could be Paul Heyman and Batista, but I don't see that. THAT would be awesome though, having Heyman take over TNA and Batista being a major heel to be champion. unfortunately I don't see that happening.
TNA will probably have this Hogan/Bischoff/Jarrett heel turn. I love TNA but I don't see that having the type of impact they expect, the way nWo was back in WCW.

I think so called they is going to turn out be Hogan and Easy E its going to be a big let down on 10. 10. 10.

I don't think it really did justice to the Hardy-Angle match to just read about it. One of the recaps I read online didn't even mention some of the amazing stuff that happened during the match such as the top rope Angle slam, a devasting looking powerbomb from Angle on Hardy, or the Swanton bomb from the top rope to the outside of the ring. Even setting the aside the high spots, this was a good match. They were stiff with each other and worked at a fast pace, and the crowd was really into it. Hardy was really bringing it, which was nice because he has been a little sluggish on some recent Impacts.
Admittedly, the time limit thing was dumb. If there had to be a winner, why even bother with a time limit? And beyond that, why extend it by only five minutes instead of just saying that they will go until there is a winner? However, I think it is worth pointing out that before this match eveybody was skeptical about how good this match could possibly be, since it was so obvious that Angle would win. After each time limit expired, it injected a little suspense that there might be a twist rather than the seemingly obvious conclusion of an Angle victory. I personally bought the stoppage because the match in general was so hard-hitting and the spot that busted Angle open on the stairs looked particularly painful (I know he probably bladed, but they pulled it off well).

As crappy as TNA has been at times, they do a good job of creating "match of the year" candidates. Too bad they are lacking in the "story line of the year" department.
Posted by: jt | September 7, 2010 5:33 PM
Kev, do you think "they" is Hogan and Bischoff?
RESPONSE FROM KE: Yes. And Jarrett.
Posted by: Orton.1 | September 7, 2010 6:31 PM
Btw dont you have to release a hold when your opponent reaches the rope?
Angle had Hardy in a ankle lock and when Hardy reached the rope Angle just pulled him away and continued the move. Hardy eventually had both hands rapped around the rope and the ref did nothing...
Posted by: HiMyNameIsMike | September 8, 2010 11:23 AM
What is the likliness that Angle DOES lose at Bound for Glory and goes back to WWE? If that is the case, is there a chance that Jericho would go to TNA with both Hogan and Bischoff there?
I am not sold on Generation ME being a heel tag team. I always thought TNA had the edge in the tag team division. Now with Beer Money involved in a fued that really damages their career (with EV 2.0), that only leaves the Guns and the team of Magnus and Wolfe. I really think the EV 2.0 thing should end. With exception of Rhino, they are old, battered, and the barbed wire gimmick is old.
I am really hoping that "They" is someone different. Not hogan or sting. And definitly not the oWn.
So when are they going to bring back Suicide?
Posted by: Peter | September 9, 2010 2:29 PM
@HiMyNameIsMike
That also happened in Angle's match against Hogan in the WWE. Hogan reached the rope, but Angle pulled him off and the ref never broke the hold, Hogan tapped and the match was over. Lame

Can't really see Jericho ever going to TNA as long as Bischoff and Huckster are there. I meant Hulkster. I swear. Anyway I'm thinking Jericho will take a little time away from the ring and work out a new contract with World Wrestling Entertainment.
And as for the Paul Heyman and Dave Batista being "They"... Now that would be a great work. All timer. But I doubt TNA has the juice to pull that off. It's probably going to Bischoff and Hogan with Nash and Sting. And really. That's sort of vomit inducing, no?
Posted by: Adam | September 10, 2010 9:50 AM
"So when are they going to bring back Suicide?"
Actually he's already made his return. He wrestled a match at one of the tapings this past week on Xplosion, which I believe is shown online on TNA's YouTube channel. I'm not positive about it, but I heard Kiyoshi is now playing Suicide.
Posted by: paul | September 11, 2010 8:31 AM
I'm not at all a fan of a 'no contest' call in wrestling ever, but I am glad TNA at least decided to make it the penultimate and not main event match.
I wouldn't mind seeing Hardy-Angle before the match, but it will almost certainly be a three way at BFG: TNA already have the three pictured together on to promote it, and that way it would allow Angle to lose without retiring.
