TNA Impact: Rob Van Dam loses his cool – and that's a good thing

After listening to Rob Van Dam’s misguided cool and calm phone interview on TNA Impact last week, I had visions of him showing up at the Impact Zone on Thursday night’s show with a smile on his face and without a scratch on him.

Fortunately, that didn’t happen. Not only did RVD look like someone who was just six weeks removed from being found backstage lying in a pool of his own blood after being savagely attacked by Abyss and his board of nails, but he came across as an angry and frustrated guy seeking revenge.

RVD, who was all bandaged up and walked with a limp, cut a good promo that was uncharacteristically emotional, which was exactly what was needed to get his angle with Abyss over. As expected, RVD and Abyss will meet at the Bound for Glory pay-per-view on Oct. 10 (or as Abyss would say, “10, 10, 10!”)

I’m still scratching my head as to how last week’s segment with RVD – who was basically no-selling the heinous attack – even made it on the air.

Other thoughts on Thursday’s show:

The main event – which saw A.J. Styles defeat Sabu in a ladder match to determine whether Fourtune or EV 2.0 got the man-advantage in the Lethal Lockdown match at BFG – was pretty lackluster as far as ladder matches go. Mike Tenay said that it was “a match that people have wanted to see for years.” Really? …

Styles’ TV title was not on the line against Sabu. Has Styles defended the TV title on TV even once since winning it two months ago? …

After Abyss attacked Jeff Hardy backstage, he carried Hardy’s limp body to the ring and then cut a promo. Abyss must have used a sleeperhold on Hardy off camera, because Hardy seemed to be taking a nap in the ring while Abyss spoke. Hardy laid there motionless the entire time, which was unintentionally funny. …

A Rob Terry match is not a great way to open a show. Then again, a Rob Terry match isn’t really a pleasurable viewing experience any time. Inexplicably, Terry defeated Abyss by disqualification. So the unstoppable monster has now been pinned by Steve Richards and beaten by Terry in recent weeks. …

I really liked Kurt Angle’s promo during his exchange with Mr. Anderson, as he talked about how he is nothing without wrestling. ...

“The Pope” D’Angelo Dinero came off a bit heelish when he was complaining to Eric Bischoff about not being in the three-way match for the TNA world title at BFG, but I don’t expect him to turn. He’s aligned with Sting and Kevin Nash, and it’s obvious at this point that those two are going to be revealed as babyfaces at BFG. By the way, Dinero’s argument as to why he should be added to the three-way match made no sense. He said that since Angle and Hardy got in without winning a semifinal match, why not him, too? The difference, of course, is that Hardy and Angle wrestled to two no-contests, but Dinero was defeated by Mr. Anderson in the semifinals. …

The Dinero-Samoa Joe match wasn’t bad. …

Lacey Von Erich’s profanity-laced tirade backstage was almost as cringe-worthy as her wrestling ability. Speaking of which, during the tag team match that saw TNA Knockouts tag team champions Taylor Wilde and Hamada defeat Von Erich and Velvet Sky, LVE executed the worst-looking hurricanrana ever. She also failed to realistically sell the effect of Madison Rayne hitting her in the back with a motorcycle helmet, which was the finish. With all that being said, however, I never get tired of looking at Lacey. …

One thought on TNA Reaction: Nash talked about his days as the booker in WCW and how Hulk Hogan repeatedly invoked his creative control clause and turned down ideas because he thought they would cost him money. That’s fascinating and all and I’d love to hear more about it on Nash’s next shoot DVD, but that kind of stuff is really out of place within the context of a wrestling show. Even though Reaction has a realistic feel to it, I don’t think openly acknowledging that the business is a work while simultaneously trying to get angles over is a great idea.

I like watching you, TNA. But I can't possibly see a way you make anything back on your investment. You give too much away for free with terrible storytelling. You're live shows attract 1,000, IMPACT Zone is Free(I believe), the rating is 1.0!

I think wrestling needs more jobber matches to fill TV time. I remember some good TV when heels fought a jobber, 3 minute match with a 5 minute promo. That's less time than a non-wrestler's mic time today(Bischoff). AND IT ALWAYS KEPT THE HEEL STRONG AND FULL OF HEAT! Great way to sell a PPV, but "THEY" give everyone reasons weekly not to buy.

Once upon a time a wrestler's stare told 1,000 words, now 20,000 words can't describe that same stare.

AJ-Sabu is a match I'd been waiting to see. It wasn't that great of a match, but it was a match between one of ECW's top stars and one of TNA's top stars that had never happened before. Out of all the EV 2 guys, Sabu is one of the best wrestlers besides maybe RVD and Rhino. During Sabu's last TNA run, I was hoping to have seen him face AJ. I'm not trying to give any spoilers, but AJ is scheduled to defend his title against Kendrick next week. One thing I look forward to Lethal Lockdown is seeing what these EV 2 guys bring to the table. Rhino and Stevie Richards have been used sparingly in the ring since their returns, and Raven has only wrestled once, against Dreamer at Hardcore Justice. Why didn't you write about the Sabin-Generation Me match/segment?

RESPONSE FROM KE: I don't always write about every single segment. I just didn't have anything to say about the Sabin-Buck match.

The headline "And that's a good thing"...I swore I was gonna read in this post that TNA resurrected yet another 90's star. Self High 5 BANG! Honestly, in your heart, you know it's only a matter of time before DDP shows up.

I thought it was an entertaining Impact until EV2 vs Fourtune showed it's ugly head again.

As much as I liked Abyss and his character when it all first started, it's now been reduced to the worst segments of the show, even worse than EV2. Having Abyss walking around all cheesy saying 10 10 10 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! for the past 2 months has really gotten lame. That angle lost its way long before the payoff.

I hate all the Rob Terry bashing. People really can't see the appeal to that guy?
Are you guys blind? He only looks like the damn terminator. Better than a pudgy old a** like Chris Jerico, don't care how good his mike skills, that guy blows like 95% of the WWE.

Lacey is clearly hearing all the negative comments about her wrestling skills as she came out to prove something. Best I've ever seen her wrestle and she's improving and did a pretty decent job, she did botch a move at the end but still, she's getting better.

Sabu vs Styles in a ladder match did sound interesting to me, but was a bit of a let down. Not so much because of them, as much as all the outside nonsense.

I don't think Rob Terry is any worse than a Sid Vicious in the ring. No personality/mic skills are a problem though.

I almost laughed in the replay of Ink Inc, as they nearly landed on Hardy a couple of times.

So, Abyss is gonna kill RVD, just like he's actually gonna use Janice.

I will preface what I am about to say, with the fact that I have been and more than likely always will be a WWE guy. Having said that, I do dabble and watch TNA occasionally, and I happened to watch almost all of the past few Impacts. What has struck me most in watching the shows has been the feeling that I'm watching a show and a company in a state of confusion and creative disarray. There's no doubt they have in-ring talent, but where WWE has shifted back towards a more PG version of a kayfabe wrestling show, TNA seemingly swings wildly back and forth between kayfabe and "real/shoot" even in single shows. I totally agree about the Nash thing on Reaction. I think its the exact wrong thing to do to use Reaction as a genuine, shoot-style behind-the-scenes look, mostly because it buries the stories and feuds you've been building. It should be about wrestlers backgrounds and storyline advancement in a non-shoot fashion. How am I supposed to take Abyss seriously torturing anyone (not like I would, but for sake of argument) when a little later you have Kevin Nash recalling his glory days as booker, and of him and Hogan destroying WCW? It makes Abyss look ridiculous and just reminds people of how old Nash is and how little he actually brings to the table.

Another thing to what "al" said above - that wrestling needs more jobber matches on tv. Are you serious? Is that a serious thought? As a wrestling fan of 20 years, I've never heard anything so ridiculous. Jobber, squash and 3-5 minute matches is seemingly 80-90% of what we get on TV (in both WWE and TNA). You need BETTER matches. You need actual quality, engaging wrestling matches that tell stories and push their characters. That is the single biggest way to better build up storylines and feuds.

The Attitude era was not perfect but one of its great achievements was that every show, the viewer/fan had the belief that SOMETHING BIG (and quite possible something they'd never seen) was going to happen. It might have been a match, a promo, a confrontation, a return/debut,etc...but not everyone can cut the kind of promos that The Rock, Stone Cold, Triple H, Jericho or VKM can. Certainly no one in TNA can. TNA's strength has and is it's in-ring talent and I think they have to showcase that. The reason I came back to watch the past episode or two was because of the match the MCMG and Gen Me had a few weeks ago. It was one of the better tag matches I've seen on tv in a couple years, and I was intrigued enough to come back for more. If TNA doesn't do more of that, they'll have a ton of trouble trying to improve the mediocre ratings and standing they already have.

Kev, I must concur that Lacey Von Erich's attempt at a hurricanrana was woeful. But I can't complain too much. I mean she did wrap her legs around Taylor Wilde's head. That's got to count for something.

Lorenzo:

Chris Jericho blows 95% of WWE? I wish Kevin would veto posts like yours.

I can tell with Bishoff maid the RVD vs Abyss match even with Rob not 100% that Easy E is going to be reveled as they it was so obvious that is why to The Pope, Sting , and Nash formed there group they know whats going behind closed doors .

At times, it's hard to buy Generation Me as heels. It's not so much their fault as it is their look. They look too "innocent" to be heels.

I do like the route that TNA is taking in building up their characters, though. I love how they don't respect the old school mentality of working your way up. It goes well with their gimmick of being young and selfish.

Jeremy W., my point or question is what is being accomplished by having a legitimate "built up" guy having to do the job that quick? When Jay Lethal gets smashed by Jeff Hardy in 3 minutes, do you care about his next match at the PPV?

PPV's are the main resource of a business, that's all I'm saying. And way too much becomes too stale and boring. WWE had Swagger win the belt, then lose 50% of his matches on TV. He could have fought Peter Schmuck, spit in his face after his 2 minute demolition, Swagger could have smurked at the crowd, grabbed the mic, ticked off every fan out there, get the Big Show's attention, and then run away. Way more entertaining and better storytelling than a severely fake brawl between Abyss and Jeff Hardy that ticks fan's (and buyers) off for the wrong reason. TV advertising money's great, but you need the PPV cash too. And the industry forgot how to sell those.

When WCW had Hogan/Goldberg fight on Nitro, that is considered the beginning of the end for WCW.

The whole gen me thing is very dull so I totally get why you did not write about them.
For all the wrestlers to come out to save RVD, Ink Inc? What about Rhino? Or Dreamer? Or Jay Lethal?
To me, the downfall of WCW was not the finger polk of doom or the free goldberg/Hogan match at the georgia dome. To me, it was the failed program between Sting and Hogan. They kept building it up and buiding it up and the payoff was Horrible!!! Besides that, it was the lack of pushing new talent and the new talent they pushed was terrible. Or it was putting the strap on David Arquette.
Personally the main event at Bound for Glory does not sound appealing but the other two matches sound great.

Best part of the show, was when RVD revealed his Drs. release was 10-10-10. LOL

I dont think squash matches are what wrestling needs now. They need fueds that last longer than a week up to a month. They need a long fued similar to Dreamer vs Raven, Austin vs McMahon, Austin vs Rock.
There are a few TNA wrestlers who are pretty talented with the mic and I don't mean Tommy the Tear Dreamer. I mean people like Robert Roode, Mr Anderson, and Kurt Angle. I would not say that TNA is without that at all.
Now dont forget to mark your calender for 10-10-10. By the way that Abyss talks, something big should happen that day.
