Raw: Six-pack challenge again has six competitors
The curious case of Chris Jericho and the six-pack challenge took another twist on Raw Monday night.
Jericho was inserted back into the six-way main event for the WWE title at Sunday’s Night of Champions pay-per-view just one week after being taken out of the match.
What this means as far as Jericho’s future in WWE is concerned is anyone’s guess. Jericho, whose contract reportedly expires sometime this month, said on TV two weeks ago that he would leave WWE if he didn’t win the title at Night of Champions, but I do not recall that specifically being said on Monday’s show after he regained his spot in the match.
To get back into the six-pack challenge, Jericho had to defeat WWE tag team champions The Hart Dynasty in a steel cage handicap match. Usually I hate when a promotion books an individual to defeat its tag team champs, but the way this was done didn’t really bury David Hart Smith and Tyson Kidd (although they did come off as not the brightest guys in the world).
Instead of double-teaming Jericho and pinning him, Smith and Kidd decided to both scale the cage at the same time. Smith got out, but Jericho caught Kidd and pulled him down. That made it a one-on-one match, and in that scenario, obviously the right guy won.
Personally, I would like to have seen John Morrison gain entry into the six-pack challenge. It was announced on Monday’s show that Morrison – who defeated Jericho last week to knock Jericho out of the match for the time being – would be in the Night of Champions match if he defeated WWE champion Sheamus in a non-title falls count anywhere match on Raw.
Unfortunately, Morrison lost, but it was a good brawl and Morrison has looked much more like a star the past two shows than he has in quite a while.
I actually thought Morrison was going to win it when he hit a crossbody off the video wall onto Sheamus on the stage, but Sheamus kicked out at two. Jericho then appeared and hit Morrison with a chair, allowing Sheamus to gain the victory. I think would have been better if Jericho had broken up Morrison’s pin attempt with the chair shot rather than having Sheamus kick out. That way, Morrison looks stronger, Jericho gets more heat for costing Morrison the match and Sheamus doesn’t come off looking like Superman when no one buys him as such.
Other thoughts on Monday’s show:
The Raw Roulette concept was brought back for this show, which meant that every match had a stipulation based on the spin of a wheel. Unlike past years, HLA and bra and panties matches were not options. …
The star-studded main event saw Randy Orton defeat John Cena in a wild tables match. Seeing as how The Nexus had not appeared on the show all night, it was obvious that they were going to interfere. Sheamus, Jericho and Edge also got involved in the match. Orton and Cena fought off all of the intruders, and the match ended with Orton reversing an Attitude Adjustment in mid-move and turning it into an RKO through a table for the victory. That was an ambitious spot, although they didn’t completely pull it off, as Orton also partially went through the table as well. It’s interesting that Orton once again got the better of Cena and is clearly being positioned as the favorite to win the title Sunday. It almost seems as if WWE is setting up a Cena heel turn, but I seriously doubt that will happen. …
So after having Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger host Raw last year, WWE booked Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson on Monday’s show. Yet when Raw was in Baltimore last November, we got Mini-Me instead of Ravens great Ray Lewis. What about us? What about Ravens? Sorry, I couldn’t resist. …
Johnson is such a jerk that he managed to turn the crowd in Cincinnati against him just seconds after they had given their local sports star a big ovation when he was introduced. His ring announcing, by the way, made Lauren Mayhew (remember her?) sound like Howard Finkel. By the way, I loved when The Miz ran down Johnson and the Bengals. …
The Miz faking a hernia so that he could get out of his submission match against Daniel Bryan was a great heel move. I liked how Bryan ended up getting the last laugh by making both Alex Riley (Miz’s replacement in the match) and The Miz tap out. …
Morrison landing on his feet after being tossed off the stage by Sheamus was impressive. The Parkour training that he was doing backstage was pretty cool as well. …
I thought it was odd that Jericho was wearing his wrestling boots with his fancy suit, but then it made sense when he was booked in the “impromptu” match against The Hart Dynasty. …
A tag team title defense for The Hart Dynasty still has not been announced for Night of Champions. What’s up with that? …
I didn’t really see the point to the body slam challenge matches pitting Edge against Evan Bourne and Edge against Mark Henry. …
The bit with William Regal and Goldust trading places was pretty funny. Regal can make just about any situation humorous with his mannerisms and facial expressions. …
The song and dance competition that pitted R-Truth and Eve against Ted DiBiase Jr. and Maryse was amusing. It’s too bad The Miz wasn’t involved – he would have won easily with his performance of “Jump Around.” By the way, DiBiase’s rendition of “My Way” was not the worst version of that song that I have ever heard. No, that dubious distinction goes to The Baltimore Sun’s Peter Schmuck, who sings about as well as he wrestles.

Nice review, and the best raw I've seen in quite a while, favorite spot was definitely Chris Jericho yelling at Michael Cole "SHUT UP!, just read it you idiot, we know it's the GM"

I've never been a big John Morrison fan, but he looked like a star last night. The parkour segment was a great setup for the match; they need to continue to find ways to incorporate those skills into his matches. I actually thought that match was PPV-worthy, which I can't say I've thought about a WWE match in a long time. I wonder if Morrison will cost Jericho the title, setting up a program between them. Or, better yet, will jump Jericho after he pins Cena to become the champ.
Oh, and Kevin, how can you not mention the single greatest moment of the night, Jericho telling Cole to just shut up and read the email? Jericho's so great it hurts.
RESPONSE FROM KE: Jericho yelling at Cole was funny, but I actually thought it was a bad idea because it got him a babyface reaction. Why not have a babyface be the one to tell Cole to shut up? Perhaps I'm overthinking it.

That Ravens-Jets flagfest was a snoozer until the last few minutes. Maybe I should have watched Raw, instead. Then again, if Morrison jobbed to Sheamus, maybe not.

Kev, do you ever think the WWE will go back to the days of the attitude era? I grew up in those days and it is much more enjoyable to watch.

Definitely one of the most better episode of RAW this week. The Edge and Jillian singing had me laughing out loud :)
Somehow this week RAW has an attitude era vibe to me due to the unpredictability and the matches

Sheamus really looked weak this episode, especially at the end.
Let Morrison wrestle, just take his mic away. He's like the more athletic version of Jeff Hardy.
Jericho almost broke Tyson Kidd's neck.
R-Truth was terrible.
Alex Riley was outside of the ring just watching Miz get put into a hold. He should of been down on the mat, not just standing there watching.
I like how Edge is getting more camera time. I hope he steals one from Orton somehow (at NoC), setting up a fued between the 2 of them. I doubt it though.
So the 6-pack match is an elimination match, don't be surprised if Sheamus is the first to be eliminated.

Just a few questions or observations by me:
I figured the Edge matches were just to put over his feud with the GM. Still pointless.
I've really enjoyed the backstage segments with Edge an Zack Ryder.
Its so obvious that Cole isn't reading from the computer screen its ridiculous.
Can we get a last push for Goldust? He's been excellent in the ring and very entertaining.
I wish WWE would take the leashes off some of its performers and let them show their repertoire.
What you think Kevin?

For certain I thought you would give kudos to Jericho for his remarks towards Michael Cole. That was funny. And I love the music they play whenever they lower the cage, it want it as a ringtone.
Posted by: Eric | September 15, 2010 12:51 AM
plus, Jericho shouting at Micheal Cole is funny as hell
Posted by: AIRA | September 15, 2010 1:47 AM
I always get a kick out of watching Regal being held back by the referee throughout his opponent's entrance. It was even more amusing watching Goldust doing the same thing during Regal's entrance.
I also laughed out loud when Jericho verbally berated Michael Cole when Cole was announcing that he had received another e-mail from the General Manager. The crowd was loving it. It's a little interesting to see how WWE is teasing Edge and Jericho as faces, only to have them return to their normal selves.

Maybe Ray Lewis was more interested in preparing for the MNF game against the Jets? Or continuing as the leader of his team, and not a distraction? Big Ben and Ochocinco aren't exactly poster boys for the good men in the NFL (then again, Ray had that pesky murder thingy too, so who knows?).
The only guy who would be interesting to watch are guys who would never be on Raw: Manning, who gets no credit for being hilarious in any TV bits. Clinton Portis is into the Costumes and make-believe, so maybe he should host the next Washington DC Raw?
Just my 2 cents.

To your point about Ray not hosting Raw when it was in Baltimore - Well they don't typically let murderers host RAW, that would look pretty bad for the PG Era, don't you think. I didn't think Ocho Stinko was too bad, I mean at least he didn't screw anyone's name up and he at least seemed like a fan and had some knowledge about WWE. Was he announced ahead of time as a guest host??

I know this makes me sound really dumb, but were the type of matches predetermined(a magnet or something causing the wheel to stop)or, unbelievably, were the matches really a random spin?
thanks,
Continually enjoy your thoughts and comments
RESPONSE FROM KE: I'm virtually certain the match types were predetermined.

Still upset about the fact that the THUG Ray Lewis wasn't at Raw? Get over it.
Posted by: David | September 15, 2010 10:02 AM
Matt Hardy to TNA rumors that Hardy is upset with WWE .
Posted by: ryan | September 15, 2010 12:17 PM
Maybe Ray Lewis was busy getting away with murder again on that night. Go Browns!
I was so confused when Orton popped up after the RKO through the table. In slow motion it kind of worked. It was a cool idea, but you couldn't tell what had happened.

The Hart Dynasty does not have a match at Night of Champions because there are no rival tag teams.
I hate to say it but raw is turning more and more into a cartoon lately. Having the R Truth rap song really proved that to me this week.
I hope people agree when I say this, ENOUGH with the computer GM!!! Its stupid and annoying. Just put someone in charge and get it over with. I would rather see someone like Funaki, Jillian, or Todd Pettingill be the GM than a laptop.
Its not RAW without JR.
Posted by: Peter | September 15, 2010 1:23 PM
What is HLA? And I did see the point of the Edge bodyslam challenge matches. It is supposed to make viewers believe the GM hates Edge. I think Edge may be the GM after all this hatred that seems to be coming towards him lately.
RESPONSE FROM KE: Google HLA and WWE.

At last!!! The BRILLIANT John Morrison gets to strut his athletic stuff. It's been along wait. Like you,Kev I was hoping that he would beat Sheamus and go on to the six pack challenge - but no. Any chance of him hijacking Jericho on his way to the ring and taking his place? Anyway is this finally his big break or will he jobbing to mid carders again in couple of weeks?
Posted by: The Nightmare Kid | September 15, 2010 3:32 PM
Hey Kev, Jericho wasn't wearing wrestling boots with his suit. Those were Doc Martens and i'd say it's a testament to how good Jericho is that he didn't do serious damage to Kidd with them. They are pretty heavy duty boots.

I have been pretty critical of RAW of late but I must say, this was a terrific show. I thought everything was logical. There was not too much talk. Could have done without Ochocinco or however you spell it. Would have loved to see him get RKO'ed. This was a great set up for the PPV. Why didn't RAW put on a show like this for the 900th episode?
I'm interested in the angle that seems to be developing between Chris Jericho and the GM. I loved how he told Michael Cole to shut up and read the e-mail when he was trying to say his usual "May I have your attention..." bit. That was hilarious. Loved how the crowd cheered when he said that to Cole.
Loved the twist on the end with the RKO coming out of the attitude adjustment. Nice job RAW! Keep it up!

If there would have been a pole in the ring for Maryse to work with then her team would have won that song and dance challenge.
Posted by: PartiallyDeflected | September 15, 2010 4:52 PM
Am I mistaken or didn't Orton go through the table first? I didn't get that Orton had won so was it a botch?
Posted by: The Nightmare Kid | September 15, 2010 5:36 PM
I was going to skip Raw this week but I might download it just to check out the Morrison match. I'm a huge fan. He either needs a manager or more opportunities to practice on the mic, though.

"What about us? What about Ravens?"
I, for one, appreciate the reference to Raven's WCW days.
RESPONSE FROM KE: I'm glad someone got it.

What is the deal with Matt Hardy? Is he going to TNA? Or is tired of jobbing?
Posted by: Peter | September 16, 2010 10:02 AM
This weeks RAW was much better than the past few. Morrison and Shaemus put on a great match. Although I do agree with you on the finish. Jericho should have hit Morrison while attempting the pin after the crossbody instead of having Shaemus kick out. That went through my mind right after it happened. At least it was watchable this week.
Posted by: mat | September 16, 2010 4:56 PM
well played with the Raven reference.
I just want to point out that not only is he way over and better than ever in the ring, but Dustin Runnels is in the best shape I can remember.
Maybe he could get a transitional IC title reign or something. Or a raise. He deserves it.

Morrison is awesome. In the PG era, they have to do more segments like that Parkour training clip. After a long transition, WWE is coming back into its own. Looking forward to Night of Champions. Hopefully Morrison will have a strong role in the match with some awesome moves to cost Jericho the match (but I still hope Jericho is staying!!)

I was at the show as usual sitting in section 110 which is the background shot for the fixed cameras. Anyway, I was suprised when I saw a WWE employee bringing people down from the upper level to fill in the empty seats. They have been covering the upper bowl for years on the other side of the arena, but I have never seen them moving people to fill in the gaps in the good seats. Plus I'm fairly certain the stage/titantron was positioned closer to the ring. The ramp was shorter and the setup further away from the end seats than in the past. The smaller roster and seemingly lower quality creative team made for a somewhat boring show in person. There were lots of video features before the 9:00 tv time. I attended Wrestlemania in Phoenix this year and felt like I watched about half of the show on Monday night!
Posted by: T_SUM | September 17, 2010 2:13 AM
Man-Kidd must have really trusted Jericho to pull that off without breaking his neck.
Also, what is it gonna take for Morrison to catch a break? The guy puts on one of the best performances I've seen in a long time and gets jobbed to SHEAMUS?? Don't even bring up the "personality" thing because in that regard, as well as in-ring performance, the Human Jar of Mayonnaise isn't even in Morrison's league.
Posted by: clint | September 17, 2010 1:51 PM
Couldn't we bring back an old manager, package all of the WWE NXT rejects and guys that are just not working out, and put them all in a stable called the Oddites?
Oh wait...they did that already. Let's see, taking the place of the awkward Kurrgan could be Eli Cottonwood. Taking the place of the former Earthquake could be Husky Harris....you see?
