Raw: Chris Jericho’s loss just might be a win-win
As an admitted Jerichoholic, I usually hate to see Chris Jericho ever lose a match. But I couldn’t have been happier when he did the job to John Morrison on Raw Monday night.
Try to follow my logic on this one.
The stipulation of the match was that if Jericho lost, he would be out of the six-pack challenge for the WWE title at the Night of Champions pay-per-view on Sept. 19. Last week, Jericho had vowed that he would leave WWE if he didn’t win the title at Night of Champions.
It’s no secret that Jericho’s WWE contract is expiring this month, and the stipulation at the pay-pay-per-view sure made it seem as if Jericho was going to be leaving. However, by having Jericho fall to Morrison, thus losing his spot in the NOC match, WWE no longer has to deliver on Jericho’s win-the-title-or-quit scenario.
Of course, it’s possible that I’m completely wrong. Jericho could still be leaving and WWE may have taken him out of the NOC main event for other reasons.
Either way, something good can come out of this, and that’s a renewed push for Morrison. He appeared to be on the verge of becoming world champion about a year ago, but he never got over the hump and has slipped down the card over the past several months.
No announcement was made on Raw as to whom if anyone will take Jericho’s place in the six-pack challenge, but it would make perfect sense for Morrison to get the spot.
On a side note, the Morrison-Jericho match was very good, and I also really liked the backstage segment with the two of them later in the show. Morrison’s deadpan mocking of Jericho and the despondent Jericho’s facial expressions were spot-on.
Other thoughts on Monday’s show:
Randy Orton continues to gain more and more steam as a babyface. The crowd was going nuts after he defeated Wade Barrett and then delivered RKO’s to Darren Young, Edge and Sheamus. …
The show ended with Orton and John Cena – who will square off on next week’s Raw – staring each other down. We’ve seen these two wrestle many, many times but it’s a little different dynamic now that Orton also is a babyface. Babyface Cena vs. babyface Orton is the modern-day version of Hulk Hogan vs. Ultimate Warrior, Shawn Michaels vs. Bret Hart and Steve Austin vs. The Rock. …
The crowd also was super-hot for Cena whether they were cheering him or booing him. …
The Cena-Justin Gabriel match was decent. Gabriel got in a good amount of offense before losing and Cena had to use an Attitude Adjustment off the second rope to finish him off. Gabriel probably gained more credibility here in defeat than he would have if he had picked up a fluke victory. …
I liked The Miz’s promo and the verbal/physical interaction that involved him, Daniel Bryan and Alex Riley. All I can say is, Miz, I was wrong. …
When Young came out during the final segment, I swear I heard crickets chirping. By the way, Young said that he wasn’t the weakest link, he was the missing link. Well, the hair is pretty similar. …
Edge mocking The Great Khali by doing the Frankenstein’s monster walk was laugh-out-loud funny. Edge also had the line of the night. When Zack Ryder suggested that he be Edge’s opponent with Edge’s spot at NOC on the line, Edge said: “I used to think you were the biggest tool in the world, but that’s a brilliant idea. Because you’re an easy win because you suck.” …
Alicia Fox had the most unintentionally funny line of the night when she said that she would be the “undefined champion.” You know that slogan WWE has about the divas? Well, two out of three ain’t bad.

Whats the status of triple h? I read some rumors that he might return at this ppv, but didn't know how trusty those sources were. I also herad plenty of rumors that he was backstage at SummerSlam. Kind of wishful thinking, but I'd love to see him return as soon as possible.

Jericho was pretty adamant during his match that he wanted to know who the anonymous Raw GM is. Maybe this means we're making headway towards learning the GM's identity.
Kev, have you heard anything new regarding the health of Triple H?

A few thoughts Kev:
First, I will be the first to admit that I am a Jerichoholic thru and thru, so I am hoping that he is not leaving as well (TNA would mangle him worse than the E). I had hoped that all this jobbing for months was the start of a face turn, even though he's better as a heel.
Second, I thought Miz's promo missed the mark slightly for this reason: we've all acknowledged Miz's great improvements on the mic and his ability to draw cheap heat. I thought tonight was the perfect chance to evolve his character a little from sheer annoying jerk to "sheer annoying jerk only because no one believed in me". It may be the old-school nitpicky kayfabe in me, but such a one-dimensional character is getting old and I think there's more room for growth for him.
Perhaps we could see a big (re-)debut for the sixth man.

Cena got more heat at this Raw than he has in some time. Many smart marks seem to dislike Cena because he buries other wrestlers and because he isn't especially technically sound. Therefore, I found it somewhat ironic that the chorus of "Cena Sucks" came down while he elevated a relative unknown in a competitive match chalk full of pretty impressive mat wrestling. Cena did a good job countering a hammerlock into a head scissors very seamlessly.

We all were wrong about Miz . I actually used to cheer from him during his tough enough years over the champ Daniel Puder but hey you don't always get what you want. I stop becoming his fan when he gets annoying at ecw and hot divas are fighting over him, But since winning MITB, he made me become his fan again

Thanks to Daniel Bryan knocking the Miz out of the ring, we now know what is in the Money in the Bank briefcase. NOTHING!!
Posted by: wrzesien | September 7, 2010 5:23 PM
No wonder the Miz hasn't cashed in his mitb, he lost the contract inside of it!
I never 'got' Daniel Bryan, and I don't think I ever will.
Undefined, undisputed, unified, whatever, she's undeserving.
Kudos to Cole for pointing out Khali's botch instead of an akward silence. Edge beat Khali 3 times in my opinion.
If Jericho leaves, this would be great for Edge, who deserves better.
Young's return was a complete flop.
Posted by: Phillip Reynolds | September 7, 2010 5:40 PM
Edge doing the Frankenstien bit was funny, especially when he slid back in the ring to break the 10 count and then went back out and did the walk again. Classic. And I think Ms. Fox's "Undefined" comment may have been a Freudian slip.

So let's see. The Miz cuts a promo about how everyone was wrong about him. Then in the space of about three minutes, Daniel Bryan proves The Miz's critics were correct along. Daniel Bryan has more talent in baby fingernail than The Miz has in his entire body.
Yet I am sure that at the end of Night of Champions, Miz will be WWE Champion. First, he'll lose the U.S. title to Bryan but then cash in Money in the Bank. I see two scenarioes.
First, either a battered Cena or Orton win the championship only to have The Miz pull an Edge/CM Punk and wrest the WWE belt.
Second, Wade Barrett wins the WWE championship and The Miz cashes in and wins the belt. In the process, The Miz turns babyface.
Either way, if The Miz leaves Night of Champions as WWE champion then the WWE will have had its David Arquette moment.

Just a heads up for Night of Champions, expect Randy Orton to win the title from Sheamus or for Randy to become the #1 contender after NOC for Hell in a Cell. I live in the DFW area where Hell in a Cell will be hosted and Sheamus and Randy Orton are the focus of the advertisments.
Posted by: Joe Cocker | September 7, 2010 6:05 PM
How about next weeks raw is completley devoted to a miz/jericho pairing and at night of champs jericho steals mitb and cashes it in on a weakened Randy Orton sparking a Jericho/Miz/Orton fued.... Jericho stays, Miz gets a push, and Orton becomes a bigger babyface
Posted by: Justin | September 7, 2010 6:09 PM
After Miz and Daniel Bryan's interaction and agreement on the US title fight, how did Michael Cole immediately know it would be at Night of Champions and decide to promote it as such? Seemed too dubious for Cole to be setting dates as soon as Miz agreed.
Posted by: BobbyD | September 7, 2010 6:26 PM
No, I don't know the slogan WWE has about the divas.
As a rule, I don't buy PPVs that aren't WrestleMania, SummerSlam, or the Royal Rumble. (And still not, if any of those three seem like they're going to suck...as this year's SummerSlam.) But Miz vs. Daniel Bryan for the US title has got me considering buying Night of Champions.
RESPONSE FROM KE: WWE always says the divas are "smart, sexy and powerful."
Posted by: Stephen | September 7, 2010 6:29 PM
Kevin, I usually agree with you on stuff but not on the Chris Jericho situation. I think it's similar to Mick Foley's situation right before he left wwe.
Foley was supposed to play a role in the Edge/Undertaker feud after getting beat up by Edge on smackdown but since his status was in the air at the time, Vince McMahon made the call to not put him on t.v. or the pay per view until his contract status was resolved.
My guess is that if Jericho doesn't resign, wwe will make him lose every match he has on his way out.

I disagree with you about the Jericho-Morrison match. Jericho should not have lost specifically for the reason why you said Morrison needed the bump. Morrison just isn't that exciting. Sure he has some flash in the ring, but his promos are always the same, mocking and making stupid jokes, and he has Chuck Norris syndrome. I also thought that segment with him and Jericho backstage was poorly executed by Morrison, but Jericho can make anybody look better.
Say what you want about Jericho. I don't think he is superior in the ring, but his ability to be a great face or heel and speak on the fly is his strength.
I also thought the show was pretty blah. Gabriel did make a good showing against Cena and I think you are right, it earned him a lot of credibility and shows that he could be at the very least a decent worker.
The Miz is doing better lately and not just relying on the "really" stuff anymore.
Edge mocking Khali was great, especially when he did the brain chop finisher moves. One of the greatest things I ever saw was The Rock mocking the Big Show.
Hard to see where the future of this company is once the bigger and older names retire. I just don't see a lot of "it" factor with the youth movement.
Eck, if all of the veterans like Taker, Kane, Edge, etc were to go by the wayside, who do you think out of the youth in the company would carry the show? To me, I don't see anyone out there that really has enough charisma to do it.

Morrison replaces Jericho and wins WWE title at NOC only to have Miz cash in MITB immediately after the match (since he'll hopefully drop the US title earlier in the evening)?
I would follow the general trend of having Morrison job to Miz at every opportunity since they broke up.

Zack Ryder is not a tool nor does he suck! He should not be besmirched in such a manner.

Maybe triple h returns in the six pack challenge. Any one's thoughts?
Posted by: Malcolm | September 7, 2010 8:29 PM
Probably showing my age but I was waiting for Morrison to offer Jericho a LifeSaver, great spot anyway.
Posted by: cybrjb | September 8, 2010 12:20 AM
Zach, are you insane? The longer triple h is off our tv's the better off we all are. Trust me, no 3 h's on screen is better for every one: from the young wrestlers to the fans.

Yeah, as a fellow Jerichoholic, I'm thinking the same thing. Chris said in interviews over the summer that he's not ready to retire, and that he feels he still has a lot to offer for 2-3 years. More recently, he's said that he wants to do a few other things, most prominently tour with Fozzy. So let's hope he's just going to take a few months off and come back to, I dunno, win the Royal Rumble or something. I also hope that they're going to use this time away to bring him back as a babyface. Brilliant as it's been, the "last honest man" character has run its' course. And I think people want to cheer Chris Jericho. He's gotten a nice reaction from his subtle switch to a more babyface style versus Nexus; anyone who knows anything about the business knows that he's the best performer in the business.

Off topic, and I'm sure this isn't your decision, but I really hate this new layout and font.
Have a good day.

You'd think that they would have something that at least looks like a contract inside the briefcase, just in case it gets opened accidentally-just like what happened on Raw. The way Miz just nonchalantly shut the case as if it did contain something was hilarious though. You could almost see the fans at ringside pointing out there was nothing inside.
Posted by: UK Paul | September 8, 2010 11:35 AM
I think Nexus needs something new. Coming out and talking only does so much. Getting into a fued with Darren Young will do nothing either. They need a title. I would like to see Wade Barrett with the belt, but at the same time him holding the belt wouldn't be enough. If Triple H came back and was heel with Nexus and he had the belt it may help them. Even though I can't stand Triple H. Or maybe Otunga and Tarver win the tag titles. They need some sort of gold in that group!
Posted by: brandon | September 8, 2010 12:39 PM
I saw a commercial the other day for Night of Champions, and it mentioned that EVERY title would be on the line. If this is the case, wouldn't Morrison and R-truth be in that? As far as I remember the number 1 contenders match ended in a Double DQ. Sounds like a 3 way match at Night of Champions, which would take Morrison out of the 6 pack, wouldn't it?
Posted by: Zach | September 8, 2010 3:21 PM
I for one am glad they pulled a swerve with Jericho. Fozzy is doing a European tour for most of October, so my guess is that he lets his contract expire and renews with the tour is finished *cough* Survivor Series return*cough*.
I think if they left him in and he lost, he might as well take a chair to the middle of the ring and cut the same promo Batista did. It would have been a waste of an opportunity. If I had my way (which as a married man, I never do), I would tease Jericho finally coming to save Team WWE as he finally "gets it" and wants to turn face. Only to get decimated for his troubles by Nexus and setting up a return where the "Save Us" graphic comes up as Nexus has an advantage at SS. He could still turn heel soon after and say no one from WWE had his back or make the full turn. Not that I've thought it out or anything.
My only other thought on the show is that am I the only one who thinks TJ Houshmandzadeh is The Great Khali's Mini Me? Seriously, look at his pic on the Sun's homepage.

'He(Morrison) appeared to be on the verge of becoming world champion about a year ago'
That's taking it a bit far...sure he picked up some steam, but he never has 'appeared' to be anything other than an upper mid carder
RESPOSNE FROM KE: We'll have to agree to disagree. When he was wrestling Jeff Hardy, Punk and Edge, he clearly was being groomed for a main event spot.

I hate to say it but I do not see the WWE doing anything good to Jericho before his contract expires. He is a great heel. But he used to be a hilarious face. Especially everything he used to say about Stephanie. I really do not see him getting back into the six pack challenge. Something tells me it will be either the return of HHH or the Miz after he loses to Daniel Bryan. And speaking of Daniel Bryan, its nice to see someone dust off the crossface.

Re: The line about the Divas. Wouldn't that be ONE out of three? Smart - McCool, all others not so much. Powerful - Phoenix and no one else. Sexy - Mostly all of them with exceptions being Phoenix and Natalya Niedhart. At least McCool gets 2 out of three because she isn't powerful. Now if we were talking TNA Knockouts there would be no contest, most of them meet two out of three of the values. To be honest I couldn't give any of the Divas or Knockouts a 3 out of 3.

* And I would agree. Great angle to help elevate Morrison. And The Miz as well obviously. Plus this sets up a great feud between former partners revolving around a World Title. Hope they do it. But some how I see Orton getting the belt at this ppv. As for the Miz with the MITB "ace up his sleeve"... Anything can happen really. But I'm thinking he waits until the aftermath of the Hell in a Cell ppv to cash that bad boy in. And yes I agree. Bryan wins the U.S. strap at Night of Champions. Miz has to drop that title to somebody before he wins the big one.

lol @ the idiot who says daniel bryan has more "talent" than miz.
listen moron, wwe is fake. as in fake fake. so you see it isnt about "wrestling". its about "entertainment". and that is where the miz shines and daniel bryan fails miserably.
if youre going to judge "talent" in terms of wrestling capability, watch mma not wwe. because if you continue to watch a predetermined tv show and make pretentious ass comments like that, it'll only make you look like a fail hypocrite.

Main Event spot and World Champion aren't necessarily the same thing though. Whilst he was involved with higher profile stars and storylines, it never seemed to me that he had the X Factor to make it to the top and actually be above Hardy/Punk/Edge. He needs to connect with the audience a heck of a lot more, or he'll be the next person who should have made it but didn't quicker than you can say Shelton Benjamin.
