Raw: Build for Hell in a Cell gets off to a good start
WWE followed up a rather ordinary Night of Champions pay-per-view Sunday night with a hot episode of Raw on Monday.
I thought everything clicked on this show, from the opening verbal exchange between Randy Orton and Sheamus to the closing gauntlet match that pitted John Cena versus The Nexus. In between, there was a strong segment with The Miz and Daniel Bryan, another good John Morrison-Chris Jericho match and more.
Because the next pay-per-view – Hell in a Cell on Oct. 3 – is less than two weeks away, there was a refreshing sense of urgency in the pacing of the show, and the enthusiastic crowd in Indianapolis also helped to make the program entertaining.
As expected, the pay-per-view will feature new WWE champion Orton against Sheamus in a Hell in a Cell match, and Cena versus Wade Barrett. The stipulations for the latter are that if Barrett wins, Cena has to join Nexus, and if Cena wins, Nexus has to disband.
Other thoughts on Monday’s show:
It turned out that the reports on various wrestling websites that said Jericho had wrestled his last match in WWE at Night of Champions were incorrect. Based on Jericho’s cryptic comments on Twitter after NOC, I really wasn’t surprised to see him on Raw. However, I don’t think you’ll see Jericho in WWE – at least for a little while – after his appearance on next week’s Raw, when he faces Orton in a non-title match. Orton pretty much guaranteed that he was going to put Jericho out of action, and it’s no secret that Jericho’s band, Fozzy, is embarking on an overseas tour in October. …
Morrison put on another strong in-ring performance in his victory over Jericho. Before the match, Morrison was shown backstage doing one-armed pushups off a wall. Playing up Morrison’s impressive conditioning and even something as subtle as Morrison growing a beard have helped to get him over as a more intense character. If he can ever find his voice on the mic, he has a chance to be a superstar. …
I know some fans and critics are going to complain that The Nexus was buried in their gauntlet match against Cena, but I thought it was well-booked. First, Cena pinned Heath Slater; then he beat David Otunga with a small package after Otunga spent too much time showboating when he had the advantage; and then he made Michael Tarver – who was noticeably limping and had his upper leg wrapped – tap out to the STF. Before a decision could be rendered between Cena and Justin Gabriel, the other Nexus members interfered, so Cena won by DQ. It all seemed perfectly logical to me. Let’s not forget that Cena is a nine-time world champion and one of the biggest stars in the industry, while The Nexus guys were all “rookies” on NXT not that long ago. Slater certainly shouldn’t beat Cena in a fair fight; Otunga’s inexperience and cockiness cost him; and Tarver could barely walk, so of course he was easily taken out. As for Gabriel, he held his own with the weakened Cena before the outside interference. And the DQ was necessary since the point was to hold off Cena versus Barrett until the pay-per-view. …
Cena and Barrett both handled themselves well on the mic at the end of the show. …
Cena used a dropkick for the second night in a row. Take that, haters. …
Orton did a nice job in the opening segment of playing to the crowd while still maintaining his edge. The subtle smile was a nice touch. …
The Miz showed great intensity during the beat-down he and Alex Riley administered to Bryan after Bryan’s match against Edge. Miz got a ton of heat from the crowd and the segment got Bryan over as an underdog babyface. …
I like that Bryan is portrayed as a geeky guy outside the ring but someone to be reckoned with inside it, but WWE has to be careful not to go overboard with Bryan’s geekiness. I think having him use “Ride of the Valkyries” as his entrance music is taking it a step too far. Bring back the generic metal music. …
When The Miz was discussing whether poor officiating had anything to do with him losing the U.S. title to Bryan at NOC, he said, “I don’t like to complain about referees. I’m not Ray Lewis.” Normally, I would rush to the defense of a Baltimore Ravens player (especially when the person taking a shot at him is from Cleveland), but I won’t do it this time. For one thing, I thought Lewis came off like a sore loser by complaining about the officials after Sunday’s loss to the Cincinnati Bengals when he should have been pointing the finger at his team’s lackluster offense. And secondly, The Miz can say whatever he wants because he’s The Miz, and he’s … awesome! …
The anonymous Raw general manager overturning Edge’s win over Bryan and awarding the decision to Bryan by disqualification would seem to indicate that noted Bryan-basher Michael Cole is not the mystery man. …
Speaking of Cole, he was pretty funny when he was ragging on The Hart Dynasty’s brutally bad commentary during the match that saw new WWE tag team champions Drew McIntyre and Cody Rhodes defeat Santino Marella and Vladimir Kozlov. Honestly, who thought it was a good idea to put microphones in front of David Hart Smith and Tyson Kidd? Kidd actually said, “That was so funny I forgot to laugh,” which I don’t think I’ve heard since the second grade. The one positive is that Smith did a pretty good impression of McIntyre. …
I was surprised that Kozlov – not Marella – did the job in the tag match. …
The backstage segment with Edge, Bryan and Zack Ryder was funny. Edge’s facial expressions were especially hilarious. …
My fear that WWE unified the women’s titles just so Michelle McCool and Layla can each carry around a title belt was realized. I can’t wait for this to run its course and there to be just one champion. …
It was nice to see the underrated Layla get a clean win over Melina. She did it in impressive fashion, hitting a blockbuster/stunner type move (Masato Tanaka’s Diamond Dust) off the second rope. …
I have no idea what “get crunk” means, but I do enjoy watching Eve Torres dance to R-Truth’s new entrance music. Any chance we could keep Eve’s dancing but dump the crunk and bring back “What’s Up?” …
So either Ted DiBiase Jr. or Maryse has a secret admirer. If this was still the Attitude Era, the mystery person would be Orlando Jordan and he’d have a crush on both of them.

RESPONSE FROM KE: Really? Well that's not PG. Looks like CM Punk needs to go to Raw and give R-Truth a lesson in Straight Edge.

Good article, Kev. I thought it was a pretty strong episode of Raw as well. Orton has a good thing going by being a face without "shamelessly pandering" to the WWE universe parasites. I marked out when Y2J walked out because I actually believe what the IWC said about him being done for the time being. Although, Jericho did give the illusion via Twitter that he wasnt done with the company. I hear the company has plans for him and mania but how trust worthy could those reports be when they come from the same jokers who said he wouldnt be at Raw?
The Nexus/Cena angle was good and thats saying a lot since I am one of the mythical "smart" fans who hates his superman gimmick. I'm sure you will wait till you preview HTC to predict the match but do you think Cena will join the Nexus and gradually turn heel? Just a thought. Keep up the good work, my friend!

One thing you forgot to mention was the the unified women's championship is now called the unified divas championship and they're still carrying around that barbie toy butterfly belt. There goes 50+ years of history...

Indeed, it was a good instant build-up for HIAC.
The stipulation between Cena/Barett is very interesting. The fact of seeing the brutal outlaws disband or Cena joining Nexus and turning heel (which will be historic) makes this match THE match for me at HIAC.
Orton's roll is unstoppable and I doubt, it'll stop at HIAC.
Hey Kev, given that the Mystery RAW GM hates Edge, do have an idea of an EDGEHATER?

R-Truth's new entrance is possibly one of the worst WWE entrances of all time. The mute button will be working overtime over the coming months.
I thought Raw was decent but I'm going to miss Jericho when he goes, even though storylines for him have been weak lately.
I'm also disappointed at Ted DiBiase's 'push'. What was the point of bringing back the Million-Dollar title and changing his character just to have him job to the black Vanilla Ice?
Posted by: PapaPump | September 22, 2010 4:29 AM
Hey Kev, what do you think are the chances that Matt Hardy turns out to the Raw GM and that the whole recent incidents turn out to be just a huge angle to misdirect everyone?

Kane will lose the World heavyweight to c m punk or the phenom before or during Hell in a cell

To "get crunk" means to get really really, or, colossaly, drunk.
---
not true, to get crunk does not necessarily mean to be drinking or intoxicated on drugs. It means to have a good time, to get rowdy, wild. It's similar to 'get buck' which also R Truth says in his song. I believe that 'crunk' originated from made up past tense of "crank it up." However, reading online, non southerners and those not too familiar with southern rap have twisted it to mean "crazy + drunk"

To be honest I really didn't fing Cole's burial of THD funny, I just kind of thought it made them look ridiculous and got no one over but Cole himself.
I get it when Cole rags on the NXT rookies, but this was Raw...and he was ragging on two really promising young talents who should never have been put in that position to have that weakness exposed so blatantly.
I think you could tell Smith and Kidd were taken aback by Cole's relentless attack on their performance and it only served to make them more uncomfortable.
I just don't see how a commentator getting over at the expense of the best tag team in the company is good business? I don't remember a Heel Jerry Lawler, JBL, Heenan...or even Paul Heyman burying actual talent like that outside the boundaries of an angle.
All Cole done was draw more attention to the fact the Hart Dynasty aren't great on the mic and then ridicule it and make them look small time. Whatever happened to accentuating the positives and playing down the negatives?
On a side note...and to his credit...Michael Cole should hang up his headphones and become Raw's next GM, he has that 'Eric Bischoff Hate-ability factor'!

The real meaning of Crunk----
Chronic + Drunk = CRUNK
Posted by: chris | September 22, 2010 8:36 AM
I have to say I'm digging a heel Michael Cole. I HATED him before the turn, but he is actually entertaining and funny now. Glad he is back on NXT!
Posted by: Deetz | September 22, 2010 9:05 AM
I would think it is Ted that is having the affair. Do you remember a few weeks ago, he was talking on a cell phone to what sounded like a woman when Maryse walked in and he hung up immediately and said it was his mom?
Posted by: ndugu | September 22, 2010 9:21 AM
Orton and his attitude as face is kinda like Stone Cold back in the attitude era. Substitute RKO for stunner. He is in a good place.
I suspected Jericho was not done yet all along. Why would anyone believe a heel would observe a stipulation he made on himself? Wait till next week though....
I like that Cole has become a critic of crappy WWE programming. That works because prior he came across as willing to push whatever crap WWE happened to serve up.
Seems like WWE has figured out it is better to acknowledge their crap on their air than try to gloss it over. Then again you can only gloss over crap for so long. Only in pro wrestling......

Man, Cole really destroyed the Hart dynasty! I bet Natalya could've put him in his place.
I agree with everything you said about the show. Miz has been too popular lately; pleased to see him showing some truly heelish viciousness and bullying. I feel a lot of the audience doesn't care much yet about Bryan, who I want to see lose that weird smirk and take the showbiz aspects of WWE (backstage skits, entrances) more seriously. Anyone able to see what book Bryan was reading backstage?
and speaking of NXT alums, Heath Slater has gotten notably more exciting in the ring since I first saw him. He looked great in there vs Cena.
Posted by: Jules B. | September 22, 2010 9:37 AM
I believe crunk means to get both high and drunk and the same time. Chronic + Drunk = Crunk. So it is a very PG term to be throwing around.
I liked Cole's reaction to Cena's dropkick. It was almost like Cena had actually pulled off an impressive move.
Posted by: Zach | September 22, 2010 9:48 AM
Crunk is a contraction of crazy and drunk. A good reference for many modern terms and phrases is urbandictionary.com
Posted by: D. Marsh | September 22, 2010 10:01 AM
I like Bryan's new entrance music. He went from generic, unrecognizable rock music to a tune that everybody knows. Who doesn't remember the helicopter attack from "Apocalypse Now" with "Ride of the Valkyries"? (Or the Bugs Bunny cartoon with Elmer Fudd singing "Kill da wabbit"?)
Posted by: Matthew | September 22, 2010 10:01 AM
Here's a thought. The GM turns out to be none other than Chris Jericho. He has been so over the top about finding out who the GM really is. The storyline can be drug out while he takes his leave of absence, and then he can make his return by announcing that he has been the GM the whole time. My other possibility is HHH, who will be revealed as the person behind Nexus, as well as the GM>
Posted by: jwat2410 | September 22, 2010 11:01 AM
the definition of crunk, like most slang, seems to depend on where you're from. where i'm from it simply meant hyped up hip-hop dancing; but that could have been due to the excessive drinking.
Also, this Raw GM thing better turn out with a guy of higher standing than either Cole or Washington. HHH seems to be an obvious answer

If the wwe recognizes Layla as the last women's champion, why does she have tro share the belt with McCool since it was Layla who pinned Beth Phoenix for the belt to begin with?
Oh yeah, Michelle McCool is in a relationship with the undertaker. How else can a woman who's been repackaged so much and is STILL NOT OVER WITH THE FANS to this day get so many pushes. Layla can make a good divas champion by herself. Having two women share the belt is stupid.
P.s. I'm not a hater, I'm just calling it as I see it.

RE: Daniel Bryan's music
If WWE wouldn't mind paying the fees for it, they should have Bryan come out to his old ROH theme song, "The Final Countdown" by Europe. Crowds loved that song when Bryan came out to the ring.

When Jericho was doing his interview, he mentioned that he had coles ip address...any chance we could see a leave of abscense from Jericho (when he and fozzy are on tour) and him come back and announce the identity of the gm? Just a thought.
Posted by: Zach | September 22, 2010 12:29 PM
Please don't talk about Orlando Jordan. I still get shivers up my spine seeing him do what he does to So-Cal Val and his opponents in TNA. It's kind of gross what he does.

To "get crunk" means to get really really, or, colossaly, drunk.
Well that's one interpretation. But it mostly means to get wild, have fun, and go hard. It's mostly used in the south, but gained prominence through Southern Hip Hop. Now it can be used for anything, like "get crunk on the basketball court," I think this is R-Truth's interpretation of get crunk.

Could WWE possibly be building to a Divas tag team title belt with all of this?

What gives Wade Barrett the right to change his one on one match with Cena to a guantlet match? He could have at least dropped the hint that he discussed it with Cole and the GM first.
Posted by: Mark K | September 22, 2010 2:01 PM
"Get crunk" doesn't only (or necessarily) mean to get very drunk.
It refers to specifically acting wild and crazy (usually while drunk).
One could get crunk without drinking technically. It's the behavior.

Kidd actually said, “That was so funny I forgot to laugh,” which I don’t think I’ve heard since the second grade.
Oh, I heard it more recently than that, Kev. It was in 1989...when I saw "Back To The Future Part II" and was watching the part set in the fifties. And it was Biff Tannen who said it, a character not exactly known for his wit.
IMO, Truth's new music is an improvement. I got really sick of "What's Up?" after a while. And even if I weren't sick of it I would still think that the new song's better; I'm just a sucker for heavy guitars like that.
To "get crunk" means to get really really, or, colossaly, drunk.
I guess I'm a little bit out of touch myself, since as far as I knew "crunk" was a sub-genre of hip-hop. Turns out that it is, but that the style of music is named after what you said, and I never knew that. According to urbandictionary.com, it describes being extremely stoned and/or drunk: combine the word "chronic" with the word "drunk" and you get "crunk". CM Punk would approve even less of the chronic than the alcohol, of course.

Do you think Cena will turn heel by being forced to join the Nexus then?
Posted by: John Wilding | September 22, 2010 4:12 PM
Kevin, I agree with you - it was actually a pretty good episode of Raw. And I have to say I actually am fairly happy with what's going on in the company right now. Orton is champ is the most over guy they've had in years. Cena is threading this needle where he still is hanging on to the PG/Superman/Face thing but you absolutely know the seeds of a heel run are being planted. I actually like the in-ring abilities of the majority of the top guys right now (Orton, Sheamus, Miz, Morrison, Bryan, Punk, etc...). Outside of the PG/Cena stuff, I haven't enjoyed the company and product this much in awhile.
However, I was not crazy about the Cena/Nexus angle...unless Cena actually does enjoy the Nexus and somehow the experience turns him gradually into the heel/bad guy all know he needs to eventually become. I would do a slow burn and I would have him turn slowly and in pieces. I also did NOT like Michael Cole absolutely burying The Hart Dynasty. I never really think it's a good idea to bury your own product and in this case, while THD certainly have struggled to get over, they were your TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS until Sunday. They seem like they have been the weakest pushed Tag Team in a decade. Just my opinion. I know Cole is turning heel, but burying the NXT guys and girls is one thing. To bury your recently deposed Tag champs is another. Unless you're The Rock. He's the only one who can do it.
Love the column!
Posted by: Jeremy W | September 22, 2010 4:24 PM
Eck man I got to admit I thought Cena buried Nexus but reading your commentary you made some good points. You actually changed my opinion on it.. it was just logical booking.
Layla is awesome she carries LayCool with her charisma.. considering McCool pretty much lacks any charisma but I think Layla's actually pretty entertaining.

If Cena loses at HitC, it would be amazing! Exactly what the WWE needs right now - something exciting. Granted Cena is one of the WWE's biggest money makers, how great would it be to turn heel in a match against Wade, who is very impressive in the ring (and also on the mic). The WWE Universe would be stunned and really, when was the last PPV where the "bad guys" won?
The Miz/Bryan promo was especially great, since I'm not a huge fan of both. I was intrigued with the WWE's decision to do such a dark promo between the two. And Miz is probably one of the best superstars on the roster at the moment.
And more Morrison training promos, please. The man is amazing...

The one sure fire way to get Cena over massive as a heel is to slow, slow burn it until Mania. Have him lose to Taker and complete the turn by taking him out after the match.
That way it would give Taker his obligatory 4 month post Mania break as he recuperates and let Cena get over as a heel before he returns for a Summerslam rematch. Just my thoughts on the deal.
Posted by: G | September 22, 2010 7:56 PM
sounds like a bizaare idea but hear me out - what if the Raw GM is Cena's dad - would explain the GM's inconsistences and the Nexus' focus on John Cena - perhaps he felt that Cena wasn't living up to his full potential. And perhaps at this point, when Cena is mostly heel, he accepts it. Could be a weird way to go....
Plus I would love for Cena to go heel just because it would feel pretty fresh as we havn't had a major face turn heel since Batista. Plus Cena has been a face since 2003 so basically 7 years!
Posted by: Alvin | September 22, 2010 8:19 PM
Orton has zoomed by Cena as the top babyface on Raw. I can't wait for Cena's heel promos once he turns. But if Cena joins the Nexus, against whom would they feud?

I love this blog, a bunch of nerdy white kids arguing over the definetion of the word crunk....pricless! If you're proud not to know the defenetion of that word let me see your devil horns \m/!!
And the more everyone keeps talking about a Cena heel turn the longer it's going to take. Remember Vince loves to make fools out of the smarks who think they know it all. Anyone remember what was in Kanes bag or who tried running over Jeff Hardy.
Just when you think you've got all the answers Vince changes the questions!

I usually am happy to have my 8 year son watch Raw with me. The kids love it - However, the bullying/hazing scene with Danial Bryan and the Miz, was just too much. I usually don't care whose a face whose a heel, gernally I like the Miz and his promos. This just came across as bullying, what's entertaining about that wwe?
RESPONSE FROM KE: Yes, it was bullying. That was the point. Miz is a heel. He's supposed to do things to make you not like him and want to see him get his comeuppance.

Jericho's last night in the company? Congratulations on being duped by Meltzer yet again.
RESPONSE FROM KE: No idea what you are talking about.

the gm is obviously triple h. his return is imminent, he is a so called "badass" antihero who messes with people (especially heels since he's more babyface right now). and him being the son-in-law of vince makes sense with taking over raw.
Posted by: Ajanta | September 23, 2010 2:37 PM
As glad as i was to see Jericho on the show, it's horribly disappointing that the WWE yet again pulled the old 'bait and switch' on those who were suckered into the PPV (thankfully i wasn't one of them).
You can't promote a match with a guy saying he'll leave if he loses, only for him to be there the next night and have the commentators make a lame excuse to justify it.
Imagine the furore if that happened in one of the territories after a loser leaves town match.
I don't know what to think of Maryse' new storyline.
On one hand it's great to see her get a somewhat meaty story but on the other hand it's sad to see her jobbing like that and simply not even in the title picture whilst far inferior talents (and characters) get pushed to the moon (and that's "real talk" ;) )
Posted by: John | September 23, 2010 6:22 PM
Your response to me seems that you think I don't 'get wrestling'
There is a difference between a beatdown from two guys, and general baddy 'heel' behavour. For example what happened to Tommy Dreamer at the hands of Fortune on TNA last week was classic heel, set up situation. The storytelling was good, you could tell the guys were legit moved by the kudos Tommy was handing out. However overall their general nastyness prevalled, they got heat from the crowd, the story continues. That is good, face, heel interaction. Tip of the hat to TNA.
Perhaps the Miz beatdown was AWESOME,gripping, entertainment! Perhaps the realism of those slaps and hair pulling were too much for me and I've got bully issues.
I've seen some great stuff from WWE especially the interaction with Cole and Bryan toward the end of NXT series 1. This Miz/Bryan promo segment was far worse in my eyes to what got Bryan sacked the first time on WWE. Choking out a ring announcer with his own tie, and spitting on Cena, yeah it was over the top, but that was shocking, orginal and most of all put the E in entertainment!

Shouldn't the combination of chronic and drunk be spelled chrunk? Actually, either R-Truth's enunciation or my hearing is so poor that I had no idea that was what he was saying.
Is the Barrett-Cena stipulation that if Barrett loses Nexus disbands or they all get fired? From what I got out of what Cena said, they would all no longer be in the WWE.
