Quick hits on WWE NXT
Here’s my take on the season premiere of NXT Season 3, which I attended live at 1st Mariner Arena in Baltimore Tuesday night:
• Naomi made a very good first impression and I’d say she is the early favorite to win the competition. She won both challenges – a dance-off and a Capture the Flags contest – and also scored a victory with her pro Kelly Kelly over Alicia Fox and Maxine in a tag team match. Naomi displayed impressive athleticism and she was very likable. I don’t know if it came across on television, but the crowd got behind her, while the reaction to the other five rookies was either negative or indifferent.
• None of the other rookies really stood out to any great degree, although I thought Maxine cut a good heel promo and Kaitlyn – the replacement for the ousted Aloisia – did well in her role as the well-meaning rookie of overbearing pro Vickie Guerrero.
• Speaking of Guerrero, she was highly entertaining. It was an embarrassment of riches for a Vickie mark such as myself, as she did the “excuse me” routine in two segments on NXT and also later in the evening on Smackdown. Guerrero ordering Kaitlyn to do her promo over in the opening segment and then again at the end of the show was great. The relationship between these two is going to be fun.
• Naomi, a former Orlando Magic cheerleader, clearly deserved to win the dance competition. I thought Kaitlyn’s routine was funny, but the majority of the crowd didn’t care for it. They didn’t like her promo either, even though she was trying to do the “hot girl who also is the class clown” babyface bit. Michael Cole, by the way, was hilarious doing his over-the-top dance moves.
• Not only was A.J.’s promo not any good, but she said “damn” in the middle of it. Is that PG? Jamie’s promo came off robotic and overly scripted, while Aksana delivered this classic line: “Let me entertainment you.”
• The Naomi and Kelly Kelly versus Maxine and Fox match was going well until the finish. Naomi got Maxine in a small package and the referee counted three. Fox had attempted to make the save before the three count, but Kelly Kelly cut her off. While the two pros brawled, Naomi and Maxine continued wrestling, with Naomi going for another pin attempt before the referee informed her that the match was over. Someone obviously screwed up. Naomi looked decent in the ring, but Maxine was not impressive.
• The other match on the show saw A.J. and Primo defeat Aksana and Goldust. There was a botched move involving the women that was supposed to lead to the finish, so they just went for it again and they pulled it off the second time.

Comments
Is Naomi Alicia Fox's sister. I remember reading somewhere WWE signed her sister.
RESPONSE FROM KE: WWE has signed Fox's sister but she is not Naomi.

I disagree with you somewhat their Kevin. I do agree that Naomi was dominant and well on her way to becoming the next " Breakout Diva " ...
However... in regards to A.J. I feel that she was equally impressive, and her performance was well equal to Naomi.
For example....in scoring the "Dance Off" - I feel that should have been a victory for A.J., as oppose to Naomi. Not only did the fans react just as well as with A.J. - but Naomi only stuck with what she learned from cheerleading. She abandoned helping her poor dance partner ( a no no) and did her own thing. On the other hand, A.J. - stuck with her partner and cut an awesome "incharge" flirtation number.
Naomi won the capture the flag, I agree that no one can match that athletism. So by my count that is 1 - 1 .
Both women won their matches, however in the world of AUSTIN 3:16 - A.J won it in less than 2 minutes.
Where A.J. iced it for me, was when she was attacked by Katyln, whom she threw into the daunting Vickie Guerrero ....and after that - cut a nice segment where she then owed Vicky Guerrero.
I was not their in person - but in the end, it appeared that the night belonged to A.J. / Naomi.
But yes, I am not quite sure why fans booed the others. Alittle early for that ???

I went into NXT Season 3 with a lot of skepticism and was pleasantly surprised.
Naomi already is on the right track to being a star... hell I'd say she was more impressive in the ring than half of the current divas. The end of that match was totally botched and I think it was on Alicia Fox. She tried to kick Naomi but completely missed.
As for the rest of the rookie divas...
Maxine has a good look and I liked how she handled the mic.
Jamie... her arms weird me out.
Aksana will be the first eliminated.
AJ... uh yeah.... is her name a potshot at AJ Styles? His old ring attire and finishing move are already being used by Michelle McCool.
I think I'm in love with Kaitlyn. Thank you Aloisia for being kicked off of the show.

I always thought Vickie was useless but her "Excuse Me!" gets more heat than anything else in wrestling.

Hi Kevin, and congratulations from France!! I'm 25 and I love WWE Shows since I was 5 years old ! So it's great to be able to learn a lot about it because of your blog ! Thanks again and keep going like that !
However,I watched NXT and I thought naomi was quite impressive but I hope the season won't only be a confrontation with Maxine...because after these two junior divas, the rest of the roster seems quite boring... I just have one question: you said you saw The recording of Nxt and then after Smackdown. Did you see the recording of this friday's smackdown or a classic house show ?
RESPONSE FROM KE: It was the taping of Friday's Smackdown.

More fool me for having any expectations for this NXT...I thought we could se some actual great women's wrestling; instead we get a dance off? a capture the flag competition? Two awful tag team matches??
I've seen AJ on FCW and she is a brilliant worker - and for what it's worth I thought she got the louder crowd reaction in the dance off - I'm not sold on Naomi yet.
WWE should watch some Shimmer and take some tips...even sign some of the talent working there!
RESPONSE FROM KE: I don't know how it came across on TV, but at the arena, Naomi definitely got more cheers than AJ.

Kevin, Do you think Aloisia could be brought in to NXT during the middle of the episodes as a kind of monster heel and destroy the other girls?
One other quick thought on her. What would you think of them dyeing her hair black and having WWE introduce her as the either the daughter of or an understudy of the Undertaker? She could come in and squash/dominate oponents early and learn the craft in the background...just a thought.

I tuned in about 10:05, saw a bunch of diva wannabes flouncing around the ring, and decided "no thanks." It's possible to make women's wrestling compelling (see the pre-Hogan TNA), but I don't trust the WWE to treat it as anything more than PG-rated eye candy. If I were 13 years old in a pre-Internet age, I'd tune in to follow the bouncing hips, but I'm not. Don't care, won't watch.

AJ looks like any number of "dancers" I've seen in clubs in Jersey. Not that there's anything wrong with that....

I agree with u on everything. Although these girls are going to have to polish themselves up really well the upcoming weeks, this was an entertaining show thanks to the dance segment and Vickie Guererro. I think Katlin is hot and I kinda like where she's going but she needs work and I am curious to see her in the ring. I did like Maxine's promo alot more than anyone else's. And Naomi was definetely the best athletically

Hey,
I thought it was a decent show. For me Naomi and Kaitlyn stood out. Aj is hot but annoying, and I already forgot the others.
Do you think WWE executives are considering creating a show just for the divas? Do you think it would be a good idea? Maybe that would improve the women division.

Naomi was the clear stand-out here. She needs to slow it down a bit in the ring though. She did the splits faster than what her opponent could react to. If she learns to work with her opponent better, she can look really professional.
Aksana is like a mix between Kozlov and Maryse. I thought her match was the better of the two though.

looked like Kelly Kelly came in too early before Alicia could stop the pin. Even so, not sure how Naomi missed the bell, and the music playing. Even Still, not sure why WWE wouldn't just have used a different camera angle or edit out those few seconds which made the too rookies look like well, rookies
Posted by: mikemike | September 9, 2010 3:26 PM
It's kinda scary to see Kelly Kelly, Alicia Fox and the Bella Twins presented as 'Pros' who'll be mentoring a bunch of 'Rookies'. Especially when Naomi showed more in-ring ability and atheleticism on her first night than the four of them ever have. If WWE ever want us to take the Divas seriously, they'd give them more than four minutes to work a match and drop the silly games. But then you'd need women like Cheerleader Melissa, MsChif, Sara Del Ray and Amazing Kong. And I guess they don't have the WWE 'look': fake boobs, fake tan, fake smiles, etc. . .

great tv right there.
more entertaining and to me much less embarrasing than the previous 2 nxt seasons.
AJ = hell cute but i dont physically see her ever being able to defeat any wwe diva. unless she trained further and became a talent of speed.
i forgot the others names and no one really stood out. the cheerleader sure is impressive but same thing. doesnt stand up to any of the wwe divas as a beleivable wrestler.
-i like Keys though the most.
-even if Aksana got kicked first i see her as a great manager for Goldust. they could do a series of great matches against Dibiase and Maryse.
last weeks bout between him and Goldust on Superstars was 5 star*****
plus with Aksana i want a title run and more Goldust on my tv screen.
final thought. these girls are flying way higher on mic confidence than any of the previous male nxt rookies. good on em for their hard work.
i still cant help but feel sorry for the current wwe divas who in the past 6 months of working get less tv time than these rookie divas got on this 1 show.
but times are changing.

I give it a "B-". Needs some improvement. I do think a Diva's only show would be a good replacement for NXT (maybe an FCW show on network TV or bring back WCW for a two hour Wednesday show to showcase younger talent instead of NXT, Jericho could be GM! lol!) I also think the Divas should have a Tag Title like in TNA, that may raise the bar a bit for the girls. Hey and with a Diva's show it would be perfect! Just random thoughts...

You think AJ will make it far since she is dating Jay Lethal from TNA?
Posted by: Randy | September 10, 2010 11:28 AM
They wrestled?

Not sure about the so-called PG rating when Maxine pretended to strip and at least three of them were doing a 'grind-off'. It looked like stripper dancing to me.

Kaitlin's inherent hotness may render the rest of the competition meaningless.
Sorry to sound like a male chauvinist pig wrestling fan, but I guess that's what I am. I blame it on Vince!

Assuming Aksana is not speaking in her first language, I don't think she should be made fun of for saying, "Let me entertainment you". I would hate to cut a promo in a foreign language. Of course, this being wrestling, she could be very fluent in English and just faking an accent. In that case I would think the mistakes would be meant to be funny.
Over all, I liked AJ best. I would have thought that during the flag race they would have grabbed or fought the others to try to prevent them form getting there first.
