Michael Cole taps out on WWE NXT gig

Someone was eliminated on Tuesday night’s episode of WWE NXT, but it wasn’t any of the rookie divas.

Just before the show ended, commentator Michael Cole announced that he was quitting NXT and then walked off in a huff.

Cole had been even more sarcastic than usual throughout the broadcast, as he mercilessly busted on the show itself and the participants. On a couple of occasions, he even stood up and banged on a gong (a nod to the farcical “Gong Show” from the 1970s and early ’80s) to display his displeasure with the content of the show. Cole’s frustration finally built to the point where he just couldn’t take it anymore.

Cole’s sudden departure makes me wonder if he is about to be revealed as the anonymous general manager on Raw. It also casts further doubt on the future of NXT.

I’m definitely going to miss him on this show. Cole has been highly entertaining ever since he began his gradual heel turn during NXT Season 1, and I have enjoyed his banter with fellow commentator Josh Matthews.

As the straight man announcer gone bad, Cole is thriving in the role that WWE originally tried several years ago with Jonathan Coachman, who wasn’t able to fully pull it off.

Other thoughts on Tuesday’s show:

There were two challenges on this episode – a joke-telling contest and an obstacle course competition. The “joke off” was a total train wreck. Jamie won that one (as determined by audience reaction), while Kaitlyn had the winning time in the obstacle course. …

The tag team match that saw Dolph Ziggler and Kaitlyn defeat Primo and A.J. wasn’t bad. Primo looked especially good in the match. …

Vickie Guerrero wasn’t pleased with Ziggler and Kaitlyn celebrating their victory with an embrace. Looks like a love triangle story line is coming. …

After watching Jamie and Aksana wrestle in a singles match, Kelly Kelly and The Bella Twins don’t look so bad now, do they?

In all honesty it seems as though there is more than a story line here with Michael Cole's frustration as of late. It seems he has been getting annoyed with a lot of the WWE story angles and Superstar Entrances. Especially R-Truth. If you listen to this last episode of RAW's broadcast, there seems to be a lot of tense conversations between him and Lawler. At times, Lawler even backs down and gives the "Whatever" response. If it is story, I'm glad. I always liked the days of there being 1 face announcer and one heal announcer. One to cheer on the Cena's of the world and the other to cheer on the Jericho's of the world. ie, bobby heenan / Gorilla Monsoon. They got out of these roles when Lawler and JR became popular.

I don't know what to make out of the whole Michael Cole walking out thing. With the gong there, the whole thing makes me not take it seriously, and I expect Cole back next week.

Vickie Guerrero was the star of the show.

I agree, Primo did look very good.

Naomi needs to contol herself better, I noticed it in the ring last week, and it was obvious in the obstacle course this week.

That's too bad about Michael Cole leaving. I was looking forward to seeing Cole furiously and rediculously bang a gong on future episodes.

This was the first time I actually watched NXT and I agree with Michael Cole. The show absolutely sucked. It made me want to watch paint dry.

Hopefully he walks off of Raw next. He's terrible as a heel.

The "joke off" was even worse in person.

Obviously we didn't hear Cole on commentary but we got the gong bit, he got Vickie heat for that lol

The other odditty on the show came with the finish of the mixed tag match, Ziggler and Kaitlyn won and celebrated, but then came out and celebrated again, this time doing the jumping hug bit. It was clear both times what was going on but it came off better the second time. When they showed a replay later they used the second celebration.

In addition to NXT, a match of Superstars and Smackdown we got a dark match before NXT went on, pitting Tyler Reks (who looked pretty intense) vs Trent Barretta of the Dudebusters (who got a surprisingly large pop)

This show is pretty terrible, and the only redeeming thing has been Michael "Ive' covered wars" Cole's bashing of the show. I hope him "quitting" leads to a change in the show, he mentioned several times how bad the format was, hopefully that's hinting that they are going to change it drastically. Following this week's Raw and bringing Daniel Bryan back, it seems like they may actually be listening to fan feedback, so hopefully NXT gets mixed up too.

Ugh, outside of Michael Cole, this episode was BAD. They should have Noami wrestle every week.

Yeah, Jaimie looks good in the ring...when she's not performing. It is a shame that the crowd starts booing them minute the divas tried to deliver their jokes. Not even giving them a chance. Poor AJ gets picked on by the the rookies and the crowd.

Hey Kev, I have tried to hold my tongue for a LONG time about this, but as a REAL Wrestling...not entertainment fan the WWE has gotten so ridiculous. I have been going to WWE shows since WrestleMania 7 up until last year but I am so sick of this garbage. I would really rather watch two 90 yr ols wrestlers actually bleed in TNA. This PG stuff sucks and really Kev, being that you have been around the business, I would love to hear your take on the current garbage status of wrestling since both companies have faults. I love TNA with Jeff RVD Kurt Abyss Anderson MCMG Beer Money AJ etc but hate the writing of the show and the Nash Hogan Jarret Garbage. But WWE???? Awful awful its NOT WRESTLING its like sesame street without Big Show wearing Yellow feathers. Please post a comment or article about this. Love ur column Kev.

Didn't Primo seem like his former self on Tuesday, before he became heel?

Gotta say, I'm loving the fact that Michael Cole is finally turning heel. For years, so many people have complained about him being a bad announcer. I don't mind his announcing that much, although I did have some pity for him for all those criticisms that never seem to end.

Now that he's officially becoming a heel, I'm excited to see how this persona would develop. Heck, this was something that I had been imagining a long time ago, and now it's finally happening.

Hey Kevin - bit off topic but any thoughts on the rumours circulating about Matt Hardy. Apparently he was sent home from two live events in a week and wasn't present for the smackdown tappings this week. Rumours are theirs been a bust up backstage and he's on very thin ice

RESPONSE FROM KE: I'm planning to weigh in on the subject later today.

That would be disappointing if Cole was to be revealed as the GM i was thinking it was HBK because of the story line fued between the GM and Edge and Jericho .

Now, come on - Did Kelly Kelly and the Bella Twins ever "look" bad? Not in my eyes!

I'm sorry....but women wrestling is hot garbage and they need to just do away with it. FOR GOOD.

If they were wrestling like men, I'd be slightly entertained by it. But watching cat fights...that's not hot. Not unless they're doing moves where a breast might get shown or the butts are poking out.

I wish I could just see the divas be....DIVAS. Just escort the men to the ring and look pretty. Be the valets or whatever. Most look pretty good with the outfits and makeup they wear anyways.

The concept of these women wrestling is just a farce that has went on too long. We just need to end it eventually, and I was hoping Vince was on the right track of doing so when he was stockpiling the cabinets with attractive women.

I don't know about you, but I thought the most impressive part of the show was watching Vikki Guerrero run the obstacle course. She looks like she has really been working out. I was concerned that she would embarrass herself unintentionally, but she actually embarrassed herself intentionally! Is she training to get in the ring or something?

Michael Cole has been great lately. I am really enjoying his antics, he is not as obnoxious on RAW, but I think the act should even move over to RAW. Hopefully he will be around in some capacity next week on NXT. Him and Josh Matthews are the highlight of the program. I do agree that the crowd does not even give the Diva prospects a chance, but they are pretty bad.

Bobby Heenan and Jesse Ventura were two very entertaining heel announcers for the old WWF. I think in both cases, the heel commentator personas were natural extensions of their own personalities.

Heenan was sarcastic and Ventura sharp witted and anti establishment. Both had been heel wrestlers (and in Heenan's case, a heel manager) and both had years to hone their craft.

To me, Cole is more annoying than ironic or interesting. It often appears forced and repetitive banter. I don't find he brings much to the table or adds much information or entertainment related value to any broadcast.

Honestly, I think the problem is with Jerry Lawler, not Michael Cole on Raw. Lawler just seems so disinterested these days and has lost his edge as an announcer. He was good when he was a heel announcer but seems his energy isn't there since Ross left.

Cole would make for a good heel general manager, and then they could bring in another announcer and a pro-wrestler as a heel commentator (Chris Jericho anyone???)

Cole's great but most of these line's are being fed. You could see during the Jamie/Aksana match when he made the dream will be over soon line, he was laughing in the background right before he said the line.

It is a shame that most of the Divas can't wrestle at all, even on a mediocre and limited move set level.

Saw an FCW match of Jamie versus "The Princess of FCW" AJ (as a heel) and AJ was actually moving well in the ring and was pretty believable as a heel. This ditzy face thing she is doing right now does not fit her at all.

Jamie would really work well if she could learn how to wrestle. She's got a great look about her. Yeah she is all ripped up with muscles, but still looks feminine enough unlike some of her muscled predecessors. She also has to stop using her announcer ring pose when she gets on the mic. You are not a robot Jamie...unless you are John Cena's original gimmick...

So if NXT is supposed to develop these rookies with the Pros, what are the Pros actually doing? The shows look horribly scripted, the action is bad (especially when there is a donnybrook in the ring and pros that get eliminated from the ring are just standing around outside...and in several instances you could see Cody Rhodes actually directing traffic...including the ref!)

The show had some promise, but it definitely needs help.
