Kofi Kingston-Jack Swagger match, Alberto Del Rio-Christian confrontation highlight Smackdown

The climax to Friday night’s Smackdown focused on getting over the big Kane-Undertaker match taking place at the Night of Champions show Sunday, but I thought the best segments on the program included three guys who aren’t even scheduled to be at the pay-per-view.

Kofi Kingston and Jack Swagger put on a very good match that went more than 15 minutes, and Alberto Del Rio and Christian had a strong verbal exchange at the beginning of the show and then another confrontation later during Christian’s match with CM Punk.

The only drawback to the Kingston-Swagger match is that the outcome – a pinfall victory by Kingston – was obvious since Swagger was in control for most of the bout. I realize that Kingston had to get the win since he is challenging Dolph Ziggler for the Intercontinental title at NOC, but I hate to see Swagger relegated to the role of the guy who gets the challenger ready for a pay-per-view match. Swagger’s performance in this bout further proved that he is the real deal, and I hope he’s back in the thick of things sooner than later.

WWE did a good job on this show of getting heel heat on Del Rio for refusing to accept Christian’s challenge for a match at NOC and building anticipation for the inevitable meeting between the two. Del Rio first turned down Christian after Christian slapped him hard in the face in an attempt to force his hand, and then after Del Rio’s distraction caused Christian to lose to Punk, Del Rio teased that he was finally going to accept before again saying that he wasn’t interested.

Other thoughts on Friday’s show:

In delivering a thorough beat-down to The Undertaker, Kane stole his “brother’s” move-set and mannerisms, which was a nice touch. It was shocking to see The Undertaker looking so overmatched. WWE has done a fine job of getting Kane over as the heavy favorite going into his world heavyweight title defense Sunday. …

Punk versus Christian was OK but it wasn’t nearly as good as I thought it would be. …

Del Rio has been doing a great job with his scripted promos, but he was pretty underwhelming on commentary during the Punk-Christian match. ...

Kingston usually gets a very good crowd reaction but the live audience didn’t seem too enthusiastic about his promo. …

So we now know that it will be Michelle McCool against Melina in the women’s title unification match at NOC. McCool getting the spot instead of Layla (the official WWE women’s champion) disappoints me but it certainly doesn’t surprise me. The fact that Layla discovered that McCool had rigged the contest to determine who faces Melina (McCool had Kaval pick a name out of a hat, but it turned out that all of the pieces of paper in the hat had McCool’s name on them) seems to indicate that LayCool is splitting up. We’ll see. …

It was announced that The Hart Dynasty will indeed be defending the WWE tag team championship at NOC, but we still don’t know who their opponents will be. It certainly would make sense if it ends up being Drew McIntyre and Cody Rhodes, who defeated THD in an entertaining non-title match on this show. …

All I can say about that segment with Hornswoggle, Teddy Long and a nun (did I really just write that?) is please, stop the pain. …

Why was Rosa Mendes teaming with Kelly Kelly against LayCool? I thought the reason Rosa has been working out all this time is because she wanted to join McCool and Layla. Did I miss something?

Hey Kev do think the UnderTaker has a surprise up his sleeve and that him acting weak is just mind games to sucker Kane in at NOC .

I'm kinda interested in the whole Laycool situation (but that's probably just because Layla's english). I reckon it'll go one of two ways; either Layla somehow costs McCool the match in some (probably as a surprise inclusion as a lumberjill) or Teddy Long will finally man up and announce just before the bell rings that McCool is not the women's champion, and Layla is, so Layla competes.

I'm looking forward to the possibilities of the tag titles match, though i'm sure to be let down. I'd like to see a triple threat match with Rhodes/McIntyre and Truth/JoMo with a ladder or tables stipulation. Who would you most like to see in the tag titles mathc at NOC Kev? Any stipulations?

I'm really starting to enjoy the Del Rio character more and more each week now that those obnoxious introduction promos are over and done with. His gimmick makes me think of what they probably should've done with Ted Dibiase Jr. from the get-go. Then again, I don't really think Dibiase has the charisma at this stage in his career to pull it off. I think the Del Rio / Christian feud will probably result in some good matches. (Although what was up with Christian trying to sell being choked by the chair Del Rio was sitting on when it was a good 2 inches from his neck?)

I really do hope we see a LayCool split at NOC...that angle has reached the end of the road and then some. Perhaps we'll see Layla take a face turn and valet for Kaval?

Lastly, I still can't get over how hideous those tag titles are. Word on the street is WWE is trying to rejuvenate their tag division, but making the straps look like giant pennies probably wasn't a good start.

Some of Del Rio's vignettes looked like he was reading off a cue card. I am thinking his English may not be all that fantastic. What I don't like is him breaking off into Spanish for most of his commentary with no translation as to what he is saying at all. Other than that, he looks the part and whomever is writing for him is doing a good job. And to think he used to be a face.

I never liked Kofi's mic skills. To me the hype died with him when he suddenly lost his Jamaican accent on the fly. I mean, what was up with that?

Why does Hornswaggle have a job? Is it some kind of discrimination thing? Any skit or match that involves him adds absolutely nothing to the show.

Like Swagger in the ring, but on the mic he's brutal. He has Chuck Norris syndrome. Get some emotion in that voice Jack.

As far as the Rosa situation; since when did the WWE make sense?

It seems like I can hear a pin drop whenever Cody Rhodes wrestles. He really needs to do something to step it up. Same with Dibiase. Good thing these guys are well connected.

WWE could get a nice program going with Punk, Del Rio and Christian.

Unfortunately WWEs recent track record indicates they won't.

"I never liked Kofi's mic skills. To me the hype died with him when he suddenly lost his Jamaican accent on the fly. I mean, what was up with that?"

You said it yourself: since when did WWE make sense? Look at how much Kane changed since his debut. He started out being unable to speak without the aid of an electronic device held against his throat and almost completely covered to hide his disfigured face and body. Now look at him.

Also, HHH went from being a blueblood to not being one. Taker went from being The Dead Man to being a biker and then back to his original gimmick again. Mick Foley started out as Mankind and later on was a normal guy.

This is a time when it's good to remember the MST3K Mantra: If you're wondering how he eats and breathes / And other science facts / Then repeat to yourself 'It's just a show, / I should really just relax. Best to just not think about it and try to pretend it all makes sense.

(And that last bit of advice applies quadruple whenever you watch a TNA show! :p )

I'm really loving Albert Del Rio.
His in-ring work is outstanding and he can not only talk, but also tell a story.

My issue with him though, is the writers, who insist on having him be just like every other heel in the last 20 years.

Where's the creativity? Del Rio is doing an amazing job especially given what little he's been given to work with but just once i'd love to see a unique, creatively written heel.
One that doesn't need to abuse the crowd, one that doesn't need to be arrogant and one that doesn't need to be condescending towards the faces.

I know the tried and tested heel formula works but it's cheap heat and i'd mark out massively if either US company put a heel in front of us that broke the mould and took a different approach.

It's been done before, however rarely, so i know it can be done again.

Anyone else catch the commentators talking about how Del Rio has "two faces", in reference to his past as Dos Caras?

You forgot that Mankind was also Cactus Jack and Dude Love.

I know wrestlers change their gimmicks pretty often; like Shawn Micheals, "Stunning" Steve Austin, etc. But usually that is after at least a few years.

Kofi didn't change his character at all. Still the same guy, but just within a couple of months on his work on RAW, just stopped talking with an accent.

As far as TNA goes, I have tried to give that show a chance several times and each time I turn it off before it is over because it is just sooo bad. The worst mic guy on WWE is better than most of the TNA roster. The Divas in WWE could put most of the in ring action in TNA to shame.

Rob, I am wondering what your idea is for an "original" heel would be? The whole idea is to get the fans and audience in the seats to really hate the guy. I was sick of the "bad" babyface of Steve Austin.

I don't know about hearing a pin drop when Cody wrestles... I hear the Beatles-esque screams of female fans. They love Cody, scrawny legs and all.
