Raw: Team Cena loses its Edge – and Chris Jericho, too

Things went from bad to worse for John Cena’s SummerSlam team Monday night on Raw.

A week after Raw ended with the bickering team members shoving each other, both Edge and Chris Jericho quit the squad. So that leaves Team Cena – at least for now – at a seven-on-five disadvantage for its pay-per-view match against The Nexus on Aug. 15.

In a related development, longtime rivals Edge and Jericho buried the hatchet and joined forces. They will take on Cena and Bret Hart in a tag team match next week on Raw, with The Nexus surrounding the ring as lumberjacks.

To further complicate things for Cena’s bunch, The Nexus is trying to convince The Great Khali to leave Cena and join them.

I’ll say this: The WWE creative team is certainly doing everything it possibly can to make Team Cena appear to be the underdogs heading into SummerSlam. It’ll be interesting to see what happens next week with Hart in the mix.

Other thoughts on Monday’s show:

The best part of the show was the match between Cena and Jericho and their post-match interaction. The stipulation – which was Jericho’s idea – was that the loser of the match had to leave the team. The match told a good story. Jericho dominated the action, and it was suggested in commentary that Cena was distracted and his heart wasn’t really in it. When Cena gained the advantage and went for the STF, Jericho quickly tapped out before Cena could even fully apply the hold. It wasn’t explained why Jericho gave up so easily. After the match, Cena pleaded with Jericho to stay on the team. Jericho thought it over and teased that he would before eventually walking away to a loud chorus of boos. …

The main event between Randy Orton and The Miz was good. The Miz got in a lot of offense before falling to the RKO. …

WWE champion Sheamus was put over strong, as he scored a quick squash victory over Goldust. It’s a shame that Goldust is being made to look like such a jobber, but I understand why WWE booked this match the way it did. Sheamus needs to come across as force heading into his SummerSlam title defense against Orton, and his dominant performance against a guy he had a lot of trouble defeating a year ago (clips of Sheamus-Goldust matches from ECW were shown) illustrates just how far he has come. …

It was nice to see R-Truth – rather than someone such as Cena or Jericho – interrupt Edge’s promo during the opening segment. R-Truth did a fine job on the mic. …

The Edge-Wade Barrett match was decent and had a logical finish. After demanding before the match that no one on Team Cena get involved, Edge ended up running away when the six other Nexus members showed up to interfere. …

The six-woman tag match that saw WWE Divas champion Alicia Fox, Jillian Hall and Tamina defeat Eve Torres, Gail Kim and Natalya was entertaining. I thought for a second that Natalya was going to beat Fox to set up a title program between them, but it turned out to be wishful thinking, as Fox pinned Natalya for the win. It became clear to me at that point that WWE was keeping Fox strong for a program with the returning Melina, who has been out since December after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Sure enough, out came Melina in street clothes to lay out Fox. It was no secret that Melina’s return was imminent, but I had been thinking that she was going to be reunited with John Morrison to take on Ted DiBiase Jr. and Maryse before getting back into the title picture. …

The trailer for the new Cena movie, “Legendary,” looked interesting. After “The Marine” and “12 Rounds,” it’s refreshing to see him doing something other than another by-the-numbers action flick. …

There was no guest host again this week, but we did get one taped skit with Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg and The Bella Twins. It wasn’t bad. Ferrell and Wahlberg were promoting their upcoming movie, “The Other Guys,” which also has Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in it. …

I don’t know how many markets this aired in, but an ad for TNA’s Hardcore Justice pay-per-view aired during one of the commercial breaks. The funny thing is that the show was referred to by its original name of Hard Justice and all of the typical TNA stars were featured, including Sting. There was no footage of Tommy Dreamer, Raven, etc.

The WWE site is only advertising two upcoming "hosts". And those two are in October. Grim outlook for the guest host format.

I thought Jericho tapping basically meant he wanted out of the team.

The reason Chris Jericho and Edge left the Cena team 'cause I'm willing to bet that WWE is replacing them with big surprises? Maybe this is a sign that Triple H will join Team Cena?

i thought last weeks show was FINALLY a good RAW.
but this week was even better.

great job everyone in wwe:)

This was a better effort then last week, but I still think they're booking the buildup to SummerFest all wrong. By focusing entirely on the dissension in the ranks of Cena's team, Nexus has faded into the background and lost a ton of momentum. They REALLY need to start building those guys up a bit as individuals before the match.

Also, I don't buy that the stakes are as high as they want us to think. Truth said to Edge that "everything" is on the line in this match. How, exactly? I get that they are trying to say that they need to stop the Nexus' momentum, but they just haven't gotten over the idea that wrestling, or RAW, will be ruined if the Nexus win at SummerFest. As long as RAW still has time for Divas matches, celebrity guests, and movie trailers, I think it will be okay.

It's funny: given wrestling's history, you'd think the guy who would be leading the charge against Nexus would be none other than Chris Jericho. Jericho was in WCW when the nWo was running roughshod over things, and the leaders of that invading faction (Hogan, Nash, etc.) took over the top spots in the company, leaving guys like Jericho stuck in mid-card matches. You'd think Jericho would remember this and take steps to ensure it never (EVER) happens AGAIN.

So they have a laptop representing the Raw GM, a laptop that must have some sort of word processor on it right? Then why is it that Cole can't read from the laptop instead of a script on the keyboard of the laptop?

Anyways, I wonder if Jericho tapping before the STF was properly applied (not that it's ever properly applied) was Jericho just annoyed that despite his talent he never seems to get a clean win over anyone significant? It was a bit odd. I don't know, maybe he'll say he lost it on purpose to trick Nexus or because he's really part of Nexus.

Anyways, I enjoy reading the blogs every week Kevin.

The Orton-Miz match was good, as was Cena-Jericho match -- until the end. Jericho taps out before the hold was even locked in, and Cena wants a "quitter" to be on his team? It doesn't make sense. It would have been better had Cena locked it in, and Jericho doesn't tap out but instead passes out (and the ref awards the match to Cena). Then, Cena's speech about still wanting Jericho on his team would hold more weight.

There is one more week to build excitement for Nexus-Team WWE, and they've failed thus far to do it. How far out on a limb will I be going to predict that the tag-team lumberjack match next week will turn into a unifying match for Cena's team (with Morrison, R-Truth, and the Great Khali running to the ring at the end to fight off Nexus)?

When TNA airs commercials for its shows on WWE programming, it looks soooooo indy! I didn't see commercials for Hard Justice last night, but I saw commercials for the new Lucha Libre show on MTV2, which proves my point of how it is such an indy. I've also seen home-made ads for local independent shows during RAW.

From your interview with Jericho in August "It was disappointing because I think we [Edge & Jericho] had a great story line in the works, with a lot of trips and traps that were going to lead to a certain place."

Do you think they're going to start that up again? Depending on what that story line was, they might just be able to copy-and-paste.

This was the first Raw I watched in its entirety in a few months. I know I'm probably late with this comment, but the way they handle the secret GM is really annoying. I'm not really into the Nexus storyline either. There was decent match or two, but I don't think I'm going to watch Raw again soon.

It’s a shame that Goldust is being made to look like such a jobber...

Seriously?

Personally, I think jobbers were great. I understand the ratings appeal of matching big names every week, but it has become a severe liability to storylines. Plots end up getting ridiculous because you need to fill two hours every week (plus PPV "climaxes") and you have a limited number of wrestlers. Jobbers could really help, as they once did.

But more to the point...if you're not going to use Goldust as a jobber at this point in his career, then how would you use him?

RESPONSE FROM KE: I'm not saying that Goldust should be a featured performer, but he definitely shouldn't be getting squashed. He's the kind of guy who should put up a good fight and have a competitive match before putting the stars over. Despite the way he has been booked, Goldust is over with the fans, so why bury him?

Why do you think the announcers went from calling Cena's team, Team Raw to Team WWE. Could some SmackDown guys be taking the place of Jericho and Edge.

I enjoyed the amount of 1-on-1 action on this raw.

WWE has done a great job of not making it John Cena and the six other guys. Guys like Jericho and Edge shouldn't be overshadowed. WWE has kept this angle compelling.

That Cena/Jericho match goes to prove how great Jericho is. I understand Jericho dominating Cena as part of the story of his heart not being in it, but he really looked a step off and Y2J picked up the slack and turned into another fine match between those two. I really hope hes not going anywhere anytime soon.
Bye the By, if Cena can pull off acting like a legit amature wrestler in his new movie then he should win an Academy Award!!

Kevin

Do you see the 7man tag team being a swerve where Cena's team is just fake arguing and fighting to get Nexus to be overconfident and then at summerslam bam its a total team
I sure hope its not gonna go that way but it kinda looks like it
your thoughts please

RESPONSE FROM KE: I suppose anything's possible, but I hope not.

Let it be said that RAW is Melina.

I think that RAW is getting a lot more interesting whilst Smackdown is getting bogged down with this silly Kane revenge nonsense. Much more of this hokum and I will be in a "vegative state". I think the dissention in team Cena could be a work. On the other hand maybe Edge and Jericho will be replaced by two strong guys like Hornswoggle and Doink (only kidding). I guess it won't be HHH but that would be nice. Also Khali is not great choice as a team member unless the creative team have planned to offload him all along. It promises to be an interesting Summerslam! Finally, what has happened to my favourite John Morrison? Is he injured? For months now he has either no showed, been engaged in a stupid and dull rivalry with the uncharismatic Ted DiBiase (and what's worse mostly jobbing to him) or appearing in short boring talking bits. Does anybody have any answers?. At this rate I will be surprised if he appears at Summerslam - unless they have him selling popcorn. This guy has serious talent and it seems to be getting wasted!

Let's see ... Jericho and Edge quit on Cena. This match will take place at SummerSlam, the WWE's second biggest show of the year. The Rock and Stone Cold both have movies hitting the theatres. Can you smell what I'm cooking?

As far as the tna ads that's a cable spot type thing. If it wasn't tna it would be the pay per view boxing match or some other cable on demand ad. Here in Fla I always see wwe pay per view ads on tna.

brett hart is going to join Nexus at summer slam.....get his payback against vince and the WWE for the screw job.

could this be the return of Daniel Bryan to the mix to join team Cena

3 thought about RAW.
1) Why wasn't The Rock mentioned during the show as he's in "The Other Guys"?
2) I can't see creative building Nexus to be so strong, only to have them get wiped out at the PPV. What about as Mike in Elkton said, a Bret Hart "SummerSlam Screw Job" similar to Stone Cold Joing the Alliance at Invasion? Would certainly boost their credibility if done right.
3) If Raw is "TV-PG", shouldn't Edge be the "Rated PG Superstar"? I'm not saying, I'm just saying...

Dave O, wouldn't that be something. If that happens I might just explode. How about Khali leaving and being replaced by HHH as well?

The burying of Goldust disgusts me, would it kill WWE to push the guy. The fans want it.

Kev, do you think Cena will turn heel at Summerslam?

Will anyone be surprised that Triple H will join Team Cena? Even Peter Schmuck can see this one coming a mile away.

I think the RAW GM is LBJ. Using others lines, lumberjack matches, technologically savy, causing havoc...seems to fit the bill.

As much as I hate Cody Rhodes, I think the WWE could actually make something decent out of having him "clean-up" his brother's career. Goldust is a great worker and i've always felt misused.

The Nexus storyline seems a little predictable but I am still getting into it. My prediction is that next week during the Cena/Hart vs. Edge/Jericho match, the match will end and Nexus will jump Cena and Hart. As Edge and Jericho walk back up the ramp, they have a come to Jesus moment and run back into the ring to save Cena and Hart.

At SummerFest, Cena turns heel, joins Nexus, and starts a program with new babyface Jericho.
