Alberto Del Rio makes immediate impact on Smackdown

After watching Alberto Del Rio vignettes on Smackdown week after week for the past two months, it seemed as if it was taking forever for him to make his actual debut on the show.

It took him practically no time at all to make a huge impact once he finally got there, however.

During the opening segment of Friday night’s Smackdown, Del Rio interrupted Rey Mysterio’s promo and engaged in a verbal exchange with the popular star. That set up a match between the two in the show’s main event, and not only did Del Rio go on to defeat Mysterio, but he stunned the crowd by forcing him to tap out.

Other than winning the world title, I don’t think Del Rio could have been put over any stronger in his in-ring TV debut.

I was impressed by what I saw from him, both on the mic and in the ring, and I’m looking forward to seeing how WWE follows this up.

Other thoughts on Friday’s show:

Kane did a tremendous job cutting a lengthy promo in which he explained why he attacked The Undertaker, but I’m still not interested in seeing another chapter in The Brothers of Destruction’s dysfunctional relationship. And despite Kane’s performance, the scary music and sound effects made the segment beyond corny. …

I didn’t care for the ending to the Intercontinental title match between champion Dolph Ziggler and Kofi Kingston (Ziggler was disqualified when Vickie Guerrero interfered right in front of the referee), but I liked the post-match angle in which Ziggler showed a sadistic side. After using the sleeperhold to render Kingston defenseless, Ziggler stomped his foot hard on Kingston’s jaw. A slow-motion replay showed that the stomp legitimately connected. …

Christian and Drew McIntyre had a really good match, which is no surprise since these two seem to have strong matches no matter who they are facing. The match told a good story, as McIntyre worked over Christian’s injured arm and was in control most of the way, but Christian hung in and managed to pull out the victory. After the match, Cody Rhodes – who had been doing commentary during the bout – joined McIntyre in an attack on Christian. Matt Hardy, selling his foot injury from last week, came down to make the save, but he also got taken out. …

Rhodes was pretty entertaining doing his “dashing” gimmick while commentating on the Christian-McIntyre match. …

It was nice to see Serena finally get a chance to wrestle, as she and Luke Gallows defeated The Big Show and Kelly Kelly. …

OK, so Jack Swagger and MVP are going to compete in the Jack Swagger Senior Invitational Shootout (whatever that is), and if Swagger wins, he gets to hosts MVP’s VIP Lounge, but if MVP wins, he’s going to throw a huge party and Swagger has to pick up the tab. Note to self: Never have Swagger negotiate the terms of a bet for me. …

Poor Swagger. Not only does it appear that Del Rio is taking his spot, but he’s also stealing his lines. Del Rio referred to Mysterio as “the worm in the bottom of my tequila bottle.” A few weeks ago, Swagger called Mysterio a “dirty little tequila worm.” …

Why is Smackdown general manager Teddy Long still allowing Layla and Michelle McCool to each carry around a half of the WWE women’s title belt?

SmackDown was boring and predictable do the WWE just not care about ratings anymore . Can't writers be more creative than just letting all the heels win just laziness .

Thoughts and questions about Smackdown:

After the cucumber-melon 'grooming tip' I have to wonder if Cody will form an alliance with Chuck & Billy. The gimmick is too silly to entertain me, and Cody looks too much like his dad to pull it off.

What was with the Lay Cool promo that Hornswoggle was spying on? Did I miss something or was there no follow-up on that at all? I don't like the Lay-Cool gimmick at all, so having Hornswoggle torment them may be the only way to squeeze any entertainment value out of that pair.

The Kane promo was excellent and actually sparked a modicum of interest in the renewed feud. I think bringing up all their history and tying the new feud into it works much better than portraying it as a random feud. Still, almost any other angle would have been preferable.

Q: Why does WWE insist on trying to uber-hype some new talents like del Rio? It seems that approach rarely works for them. Months of boooooring promos and/or immediate Headliner status, often followed by a total bust. Kazarny, The Colossus of Bogga Road (sp), Valdimir Koslov, etc etc etc. You'd think WWE would notice that the guys seem to do much better when they're built up over time. Instead, they keep trying to force them down the audience's throat.

And I still think that, to legitimize Ziggler and McIntyre, they have to give those guys some clean wins over quality opponents. Hard to be a legit champ when you can't win without Vickie's assist.

Because Teddy Long is turning 63 years old in three weeks and is going senile!

I thought of a way to put Alberto Del Rio over bigger than winning the world title, he beats Cena, HHH, and Undertaker in the same night, all by submission, and clean! Beat that.

It was great to finally see Serena wrestle. After seeing her perform for Shimmer, it's evident she's head and shoulders above most of the WWE Divas. And although this wasn't a good match, hopefully she'll get to work with someone a little more talented than Kelly Kelly in the near future.

I just watched the Alberto Del Rios match on youtube, I'm very impressed. He has a knowledge of ring psychology that half the roster can't seem to grasp. Nice touch with the spanish announcer too.

If Teddy Long allows a consultant to make decisions (and get involved in matches), he certainly isn't going to care who carries the Womens' belt.

I'm sorry but it would have been more of a storyline if Rey was behind the attack instead of Kane. We've been down the Kane and Undertaker feud numerous times before.

They should just let Layla reign as women's champ since she's the one who pinned Beth Phoenix. It's just stupid to have co-champions. I guess being in a relationship with the Undertaker paid off for McCool.

Hey Kev when do think the Raw GM will be reviled at Survivor Series and the match i hope to see at WrestleMania is John Cena vs the UnderTaker that would be an epic .

Kev, there's a question i've been wanting to ask you for a while, but i've not gotten round to it until now. I personally feel that WWE has too many mid-card guys, and that they are struggling to successfully push as many talents as they perhaps should ie; R-Truth, MVP, John Morrison and some may say Christian. Do you think it would be beneficial if there was an extra title division introduced to both Smackdown and Raw? Perhaps the re-introduction of the European Title. Think about it, there are some really talented guys on both shows (and even more that they are trying to bring through with shows like NXT), and yet there are only two singles titles to fight for, with the WWE/World titles being just unrealistic for many at this stage. Just curious on your thoughts. Cheers.

RESPONSE FROM KE: No, I think titles become meaningless when there's too many of them.

Has anyone ever considered starting a fantasy league for wrestling just like the major sports have? or does one already exist?

Participants would draft their roster of talent and then earn points each time they win (more points in a title match, or on pay per views, perhaps). Their could be trades and the current season would end with WrestleMania. Just bouncing ideas.

Has anyone been involved in something like this or consider participating? Thanks.

I did see the Coach on SportsCenter so that cancels him out. My guess now is that the Raw Gm is Vince Russo or Cole .

Just seen a vintage match between Rey Mysterio Jr and Chavo (for intercontinental title). If they're on the same roster, why aren't they pitted against each other? I think a three way feud between Rey, Alberto and Chavo could be fun...

Kevin I'm wondering when was the last time (if ever) a newcomer won clean in a TV main event in their first match?

RESPONSE FROM KE: I think Carlito beat John Cena for the U.S. title in his TV debut.

I was really impressed with Alberto. WWE will have an entirely different main event scene in 2 years and I could picture him being a part of it.

@Bradley - They actually did something like this on WWE.com for a while.

You know Rey Rey was in a grueling match with Kane just a few days removed from SumerSam that is why Alberto picked on Rey.

This was the first smackdown I have seen in a few years. Its not because of who is on the show, its because of the bad writing and the bad story lines. Its nice to see Kane have the strap and a possible "Brothers of Destruction" fued again, but lets finalize the chapter in the hell in the cell, not a regular match.
For some reason, I can not get behind matt hardy or even Cody Rhodes. Both bore me to tears. And seeing Matt Hardy do another injury angle is predictable. Both Hardys are just not what they were in 2001 during the Invasion angle.
I was excited to see Christian back in the WWE, but after ECW closed shop, is there a shot that him and Edge will reunite? Or Christian winning the strap?
Why is Joey Murcury in the SES? Then again, maybe CM Punk can get Matt Hardy to join.
Is it just me, or Vikki Guerrero hanging onto guys feels a little disrespectful to the memory of Eddie?
Do you know when Paul Wight's contract expires? When it comes up, he should seriously consider going to TNA. He may be able to win a match then.

I enjoyed the Kane promo, but I thing the biggest disappointment will be after the feud is over (again)... they of course will have another brothers of destruction reunion to take away from all the hatred between the two. At least the Undertaker being weakend adds a little difference to the mix. When he wins it will make it more like he overcame adversity.

The question about the fantasy wrestling thing.....
I remember WWE had something like that going a few years ago. Only reason I remember is because everyone I had except for Kane are now in TNA.

Carlito beat cena his first night on smackdown for the us title. that wasback when i actually liked cena
